Thunderbirds is a British science fiction television series first broadcast during 1965 and 1966 which was devised by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and made by their company, AP Films, using a form of marionette puppetry dubbed "Supermarionation".
The series followed the adventures of International Rescue, a secretive organisation created to help those in grave danger using technically advanced equipment and machinery launched from its hidden Tracy Island base.
The series focused on the head of the organisation, ex-astronaut Jeff Tracy, and his five sons who piloted the "Thunderbird" craft. Its London agent, Lady Penelope, also makes frequent appearances. The series has benefited from periodic revivals since - as well as subsequently inspiring other television programmes and advertisements, theatrical productions, feature films and substantial merchandise.
The Thunderbirds TV series is set in the 21st century, which at the time of production was still over thirty years away. Co-creator Anderson said for the series to be set "100 years in the future," indicating a date of 2065, despite varying years showing up on various objects throughout the series.
This intent was carried forward in all of the series' contemporary tie-in merchandise, such as the weekly comic strip in TV Century 21 and the Century 21 Mini-Album "Thunderbird 3", wherein Alan Tracy tells listeners that the year is 2065. 1993 vintage champagne is discussed in "Alias Mr. Hackenbacker".
The feature film Thunderbirds Are Go is shown to take place in June 2066, and in Thunderbird 6 it is June 2068. In addition, the Zero X spacecraft from Thunderbirds Are Go subsequently appeared in the opening episode of Anderson's next TV series, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, which was set in 2068.

I first remember seeing Thunderbirds when I was seven, in 1974. The visual effects of these futuristic IR rockets & aircraft and marionette characters were(and still are) second to none.
No one could top Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation techniques! RIP, Mr. Anderson. 😔

Soooo good, I can't get that theme song out of my head. I couldn't 40 years ago and I still can't. Thanks for the flashback, I will be humming this tune for days to come.

I am 59. I grew up with these wonderful action packed Anderson shows. I started with Stingray the Thunderbirds then Captain Scarlet and when I got a little older, I faithfully watched Jerry Anderson live action shows space 1999 and UFO. I have all the boxed Anderson DVD sets and love them all but Thunderbirds is my favorite and will always be. I still build model airplanes and sci fi kits. I have all the old Japanese made Thunderbirds kits in my stash. All the years that have gone by I still am in awe of all the simply fantastic miniatures they created for these shows. I cannot wrap my head around how many hours were spent creating this action packed world the Anderson's created for us. I will also always think Meddings
and his crew of artists were just pure genius.

I was aged 10 in 1965, and Thunderbirds was the programme that captured all our imaginations. I certainly never missed an episode. As an adult years later I was very fortunate to meet Shane Rimmer. He was opening a Thunderbirds themed fete at a school in Woodford Green in Essex. It was very surreal to meet him in the flesh, as I listened to his voice it certainly carried me back to my childhood. So today 2018 at my age 63, I have the photo of me and Mr Rimmer standing together at the kids fete. I have one big soppy grin on my face, as I'd met one of my childhood heroes, and memories like that are pure gold. Thanks for posting, you've made a happy man very old.👍❤

After some years being shown on the English TV channels in Montreal in the later 60s and early 70s, it then got dubbed into France and was shown for a while on a French TV channel as Les Sentinelles De L'Air. So, for about a decade, my memory of the Intro was 'Cinque, Quarte, Trois, Deux, Un, Ils sont patri!'

In Australia it used to be on Channel 9 at 6AM on a Saturday morning and the trick was to get up early as a kid or as a teenager and then later as an adult to try and stay up all night before watching the show and then go to bed. My Aunty only had daughters and was surprised that my brother and I would get up so early on a Saturday morning to watch a TV show, sitting there in our pyjamas, cold but watching TV. I think she thought that we were crazy.

Why isn't Barry Gray a bettering known composer? He produced melodies that were dramatic, romantic, epic, whimsical, tranquil, rousing, and all brilliant. Anyone who doesn't stand a little taller when hearing the Zero X theme has no soul.

@@eventingcrazy I refer you to the title of the video. "Thunderbirds 1965 - 1966, opening and closing themes".
I know there are uploads to UA-cam, etc. What I meant was the sort of critical praise that goes to the likes of John Williams, Hans Zimmer, et al. It seems that a cinema composer can be legitimately lauded, and have concerts dedicated to their work, while a composer whose work was predominantly TV oriented is overlooked. Barry Gray was also an innovator in electronic music and his work inspired many others in the field.

And six years later my dream came true and I made my first solo! The 18 th of August it is fifty years ago...Time flies but Thunderbirds will last forever!

  • @hughcdavies

Strange to think that 55 years after the first episode, Fireflash and Thunderbird 1 seem even less likely to ever fly. There are not many things considered futuristic in 1964, that are still futuristic.
If you look at all the Anderson crew that went on to James Bond movies you can see the quality, from Lois Maxwell to Derek Meddings.
I mean anyone who can design Fireball XL5, Stingray, 5 Thunderbirds, the SPV & SPC, the Shado mobiles and interceptors, and then turn a Lotus 79 Esprit S1 prototype into a submarine is a talented bloke.
    Legends all of them.

The future has rather let down the generation I'm from. Even though I was very young I remember there was an optimism that we don't have now. There was still a hell of a lot wrong with the world in the sixties but there was a feeling that it would all be put right. Not any more.
Anyway, I'd like to add, if I may, Angel interceptor & MSV from Captain Scarlet, skyship 1 from Thunderbird 6, and the eagle transporter and hawk from S1999.

Brilliant. The suspense the drama everything and to think that Gerry Anderson and the team managed to make all these with the restricted walking movements of the puppets. May be I'm just nostalgic but for me the puppets give an appealing and intriguing perspective and like comics from the golden age manage to take you somewhere else for a while. Somewhere that is related to our world but isn't and I think that is key.

Titles from "Terror in New York City" clips from Thunderbird 6. (Suggested by Thunderbird 1 being shot down?) That'll be "The Uninvited" the lost pyramid of Komandides! I've loved Thunderbirds since I first saw it in the 60's. Thanks for uploading this!

      次に1号、3号、5号、4号、ペネロープ号の順かな。

@@geowynleda4641 I know - same here! It's just that with the passage of time, I've come to realise it was so much more than that. It definitely worked for me as a kid, but if I watch an episode now, it will probably have all the elements of a bona fide drama - especially the way they always build tension, perhaps by adding in a time limit, or some catastrophe which will occur soon if x or y is not completed. Marvellous!

@@markstevens8571 It's a pity today's writers don't put as much effort into their dramas as the Thunderbirds team did. Each episode was different with a great story and some were better than some of the most recent so-called action films.
