I am a caregiver for a family member and I have broken down my decluttering into very small chunks. But I have been consistent and it is amazing how much I have accomplished. I tell people that it does not have to be an all or nothing mindset. I do not feel overwhelmed and focus on one small project at a time.

I have always been a declutterer but have stopped bringing so much stuff back in. I used to have garage sales yearly because I quickly got sick of things. My mother used to declutter, but people would yell at her for throwing their stuff away. I am like my mother. Lol, I don't really have sentimental feelings about things. Very few have I kept in all years.

A wonderful video. I approached my home decluttering as projects. The bathroom was a project, the kitchen drawers, kitchen cabinets, etc. By doing it this way, I allowed breaks based on my schedule. I kept it slow and steady thus it took several years. That was fine with me. By having lots of small projects, I was able to enjoy the small successes without being overwhelmed.

Going through my photos finally, the last big declutter project. The lie I've been holding is that my daughter will want the thousands of photos I have of her. We recently spoke and she really doesn't. I'm now free to curate a collection of highlights and trash the rest. Goodbye duplicates! Why did I always order them?! I'm still struggling with saving three similar in a sequence. She was just so darn cute. 😊 I gave myself permission to keep as many as I want, reminding myself that this is a first pass. Why do I have so many photos of zoo animals, air show planes, sunsets, etc? All going.
I learned the hard way about burn out over the past few years but am grateful now for the progress I made during the major declutter stages.

That was my final project as well. I broke it into several chunks. It took me about a year to complete but the results bring joy. Now I know I just need to maintain my home. It is a great feeling.

@@Kat-fy2wc Good reminder for me that the photo project will take some time. I have all my grandparents photos too. That's a project for a later day. Blessings 🌻🍄

"I can tell myself a lie faster than I can eat a cookie." 😆 I love your sense of humor. My husband and I were allowed to stay in a family home (a mother-in-law that had moved into assisted living) while our house was being built. As a thank you I decluttered the house (by their request). Threw out about 15 bags of trash and took 6 carloads to donation center. They were so happy and commented how spacious & light the home felt. Well, months later, it's all getting filled up again, including the garage. You'd think they would see the benefits and desire to follow suit. Oh well, I tried. You keep trying too, Robin. We can only help those that want to be helped and truly want to change.

So true. Sometimes things take a few tries and probably your efforts had a lasting impact in their perceptions of space, but since they weren’t involved in it, it didn’t stick in the same way. Thanks for the insightful comment! 🌷👋🏼

I love watching you! I’m currently “working on a project” that is 3/4 done. I haven’t touched it in months. This video is motivating me to get back to it. A little bit each day. Thanks for the encouragement!

Thanks again for the encouragement, Robin! I worked a couple of hours this afternoon and finished 1 of 7 photo albums I’m making for my 7 grandchildren. 1 down, 6 to go!

Oh yeah, my parents both had that Depression Era mindset and 2 of my older siblings inherited that from them and still have it. It took me a while but thanks to channels like yours I am no longer in its clutches and have cleared out about 90% of that extra stuff. It is a journey to be sure but it can be done!

Time... That is why I say chunks of time. I never took an entire day to declutter.

All my life I have turned ANYTHING which I've procrastinated on into a project. Something ginormous and exhausting. I am not physically able for that anymore, and just do bits at a time. Slow and steady, indeed. I just couldn't see that when I was young.

I always get stranded about three quarters through a project, and then I just can't make myself go back and finish it - how do you deal with that?

    • @MinimalistHome
      @MinimalistHome  2 місяці тому +1

This is quite common and there are a handful of solutions, but which one(s) will work will depend on what’s causing this resistance to completing the project. The fact that you’ve identified this as a challenge means that you can research it and find more solutions, so that’s great! One quick idea I have to offer is to reward yourself for accomplishing small and medium chunks of a project. Also, take the time to visualize what you want the finished space to look and feel like. Focus on that, rather than the work it will take to get there. Finally, you can always start over, in the sense that you can say that it’s a new project and now you’ll likely do 75% of what’s left and so on and so forth. 💪🏼🤞🏼🙏🏼🌟

We don't have a sofa, nor a chouch, and we declutter it in 2018. Yes I feel bad if I have guests, but since we don't havw a couch, nobody sleeps there or get lazy....
My family is still mad at me but we don't have time its better to sleep then rest on the couch 😂

What do you sit on to read a book or watch a show?

    • @vanessaandreatta9098

@@smontone no tv in my home. We read before resting on the bed, if we watch something we use laptop on the table and that way we share the experience. Yeah I know is not nice but for our lifestyle that relaxing time would take away time for working, studying, businesses and sports.
