Xero trail runner shoes, an acupressure/reflexology foot massage mat, Yoga strap, Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker, stationary bike, and my backpack. All of my favorite things!
My husband and I are moving across country. With the prices of moving trucks and gas, we have decided to sell or donate EVERY piece of furniture and move with what we can fit it our small car. Thats it. What fits in the car goes. Let me tell you…. We feel LIBERATED. The stress of moving has gone away and actually we are super excited to drive for 3-4 days to our new beginning. We are going to get a bed and a couch when we get there. But so far, we are not going to miss anything.
I would be reluctant to do that initially because prices have gone up as much as double or triple than what they were before the pandemic. There is a supply shortage as well. But I agree the idea of travelling light is liberating.
I’m not moving but I think about this idea all the time to just get rid of everything then only bring things that I truly need slowly back into my home. ( don’t think the husband would think it was the great idea I do though!)
Agree. Their furniture can be simple and timeless. We had a handful of IKEA pieces throughout the years, kept them for long and even sold them second-hand in good condition. We parted from our IKEA corner sofa after 13 years as it was too big for our new home, and it could still be used.
The wood stuff from Ikea is usually okay. The veneer is another story. The Florida humidity destroyed our keener chairs and table from Ikea when we lived there. We have a bamboo desk from Ikea that's amazing.
i dont have a bed frame anymore bc my cats EVERY NIGHT would go under the bed and scratch the mattress and it would wake me up. getting rid of the bed frame added value to my life and improved my sleep! i gave it to a friend who gets value from it now! ☺️
Trisha… my bed sits pretty high up, so my cat used to do that, too. But now that I’ve started to store a lot of Stuff under it she can’t do that anymore 😊
Regarding the hair dryer- a note about the difference between the guy with the Elchim and the guy who sometimes uses a hairdryer to quickly dry his hair in a pinch, is that a hairdryer is the worst marketed tool in the history of tools. Most people think it’s made to dry hair, but it’s made to add volume and reduce frizz, add or remove bend, add shine, and ultimately set a style in place (like a hat will set a dent in your hair that the hair stubbornly holds until it’s wet again- the hairdryer used properly causes your hair to stubbornly hold the style the same way it can stubbornly hold a hat dent). To the person styling their hair with a hairdryer it adds a lot of value to your life by way of making you feel like a million bucks every day, but if you sometimes use it to dry your hair quickly it adds little value. Elchim is a wonderful dryer, and such a purchase over a cheaper consumer dryer is actually a much cheaper cost in the long run. A pro dryer is built to style ten heads a day for ten years, a consumer dryer is built to dry one head a day for two years. If you don’t drop the Elchim you’ll have it for the rest of your life. Just my two cents 🤓
Get a Snorex mouthguard - invented by a New Zealand lifeguard. The authentic ones are purchased from dental clinics. My hubby had bad sleep apnea. When he wears it, he doesnt snore at all. It can save your marriage 😊
I like that your point in minimalism is having nice things that add value to your life and are things you really use rather than being stuck on shelf or closet or addict for years unused. Also the idea that you own the items, they don't own you
I was deep in the EWG until it came to light they were accepting $$ from companies to better rate their products. I hate fluoridated water and agree that it’s better to filter it out but the EWG is not free from corruption either.
Isn’t it funny that as a non minimalist (but also not a clutter bug ) there are only a couple of things on this list that I would find essential, that being a couch, bed and kettle! I think the further you travel down the minimalist journey you seek things that aim to improve your well being, hence all the sleep aids.
For me: Japanese sleep mat and tatami mat, weighted blanket, My pillow, Bible, my cucumber and banana pepper plants and my cat 🤷♀️. Feel ya on the couch clawing Ryan!
It's interesting that so many people rave about their grounding mats because I found mine to be sticky and uncomfortable bunching up when I moved around on it as if I were sleeping on a piece of plastic all night blocking any comfort from the use of high thread count cotton sheets because they were covered with the grounding mat so I packed the mat up and put it in the Goodwill box.
This was fun to watch ...but wow. We have such different tastes and needs! I mean, I have a dining table that's made of oak, belonged to my mother-in-law, and will last forever ...a Chesterfield 3-seater couch that is nearly indestructible-and an armchair as well. I make my coffee in a stainless-steel stovetop espresso pot, and I have an ordinary electric kettle (I live in Scotland.) You (Joshua) are a lot more 'modernist' than I am. I quite like old-fashioned furniture and decor. However, that doesn't mean I want clutter! So it's useful to make a list, I reckon.
Hey i got my back problem solved with yoga and eating plant based food only :) That really good back press from my partner, literally sat down at my back while on “child’s pose”, i think was the jump start solution.
tall plastic glass, soft long tights, smart watch, apricot face scrub, TV, electric tooth brush, heated blanket, coffee machine, candles or oil burner, spa pool, our fridge with plumbed water and ice, our L shaped couch, my kia carnival car, ghd hair straightner and sunglasses
I listen to a video/audio (which I've downloaded just in case they take it off the internet) that has white noise playing on it, which helps me to be able to sleep every night. Blocking extraneous noise is really helpful.
Once I started sleeping without my phone in my bedroom and, no matter what, refused to bring it back in the bedroom, I get great sleep now! I used to use my phone (watch a show) to go to sleep not knowing my phone was the whole problem!
Water filtration systems do NOT remove drugs. This includes medical and illegal. Millions of drugs, in use everyday, are not removed from human and animal sewage. Water contains pharmaceuticals. Paris, France appears to be able remove that, and is the only city I know who does that.
Joshua thank you so much for the two rules you gave in the early section of the video: the no junk rule and the 90/90 rule. I really need them cos I have hugely reduced what we own. Now we live in a smaller house and I have continued decluttering but "useful stuff" is building up and I need a further impetus. Those rules are clarifying my thoughts! Thank you again. G Ire
I'm too claustrophobic for sleep masks, have no need for ear plugs and would find a "white noise" machine annoying. CBD has made a world of difference in the quality and consistency of my sleep. I would like to try a grounding mat, though.
Rainmate! Best white noise ever. And you can add essential oils to it. We have a very hard time sleeping without it. Plus its an air filter. Seriously its a win win win!
I use ear earplugs out of a kind of wax. They are called Oropax in Germany. The wax becomes soft so they fit perfectly into every ear and there is no pressure. They isolate very good. Of course there is only on and off. That is fine for me for sleeping.
I used to own a white noise machine for sleeping, too, but I switched some years ago to an app on my phone. It's far more travel-ready than the white noise machine; heck, I used to travel with it, until one time I tried to get into the Post Office museum in D.C., which is a tourist attraction with airport-like security. I had completely forgotten about it in my backpack, but of course they found it in the scanners and they had some questions about it. That was not fun, so soon after I got home, I switched to the pone app. Why did I travel with it, you might ask? Because I need some constant noise at night, and hotel rooms always a gamble when it comes to such amenities.
Ryan: re: the couch and cats...Jackson Galaxy recommended placing a scratcher post immediately in front of each of the arms and by golly if that didn't WORK!! He's a genius! Maybe see if it works for your cat.
My number one item is tent, where I detoxify from mold, after mold toxicity exposure, it is washed every morning after sleep. My number two is japanese futon matress, which I also wash every morning now during summer…basically I sleep on the floor, no back pain :)
Finally, a minimalist list. My favourite stuff is my 3-inch memory foam bed resting on top of my low-bed frame (2 inch) to keep the foam from building up molds. It’s likely to happen when you live in basement in 🇨🇦 with six-month winter. 🤣 The downside: it’s hard to get out of my bed in the morning. Like I just love lying on it. I also love my Tarendo dining table from IKEA which I use as an office table. Bought it for CAD 35 during lockdown now it costs CAD 60. 🤔 Glad I got it at the right time and price.
I used the foam mats for several years, but switched to a shikibuton (japanese futon matress) for something more eco friendly. It is also more comfortable and since its 100% cotton stuffed, regulates temp and moisture better. The place I got it from said the entire mattress can be washed (industrial washing machine) a few times in its life. Mines 3 inches thick but different places have different filling thicknesses/types. The covers (sheets) for them are like giant zippered pillow cases, which keeps it clean on the bottom too. The futons often fit into duvet covers. So you can put them in the allergen resistant duvet covers. One of my favorite parts is that since I use mine directly on the floor, I can fold it into 1/3rds against the wall in one motion. Trapping my blacket in the folds (dont use a pillow to fix neck pain). I can use the floor all day (and the folded futon as an occasional seat) and have a ready bed in 1 second
@@atastyspamwich this is what I initially wanted but I am afraid that it will have molds because it’s even colder in basement especially in summer. I rather be cold than be toasted in the first floor 🥵. And it’s more expensive than my current setup so I settled for a memory foam. But I bet I can put the futon on top of the frame as it gets dusty in summer. Where did you buy the futon? I might get one as an extra bed since I only have one in my place.
I respectfully disagree on the ikea note at around 9 min. We have two desks that are on year 12 or 13 easy - great value (simple white desks). I think the 'disposable furniture' stigma that ikea receives is bogus. Typically if their furniture does breakdown it probably means it was assembled incorrectly.
Bose mini speaker, a few furniture pieces-antiques refinished by yours truly, iPhone (my “everything” electronic device), lip balm stash, Aveeno lotion. Mason jars, sleeping mask (I should check out the one mentioned lol), eyebrow makeup kit, baskets for cat beds, paint/refinishing supplies, Yamaha keyboard, rechargeable toothbrush, cut up linen for dishrags, coffee maker, pepper mill (I love a lot of black pepper on most anything lol)...plus one...Italian seasoning.
Items that add the most value my porch swing, cooking apppliances, car, furniture, house, air conditioning, freezer, washer, frig, electricity, indoor plumbing, cellphone, computer, tv, and clothes.
IKEA has affordable, quality pieces if you shop smart and look for the solid wood instead of MDF or veneer. Still have a dresser from IKEA in great condition that is 20+ years old.
Grounding is essential. You can sit outside with feet on the ground barefoot or wearing pure natural fibres like cotton / wool. There's a documentary about earthing online.
Always forget the water is not great in parts of the USA, don’t know anyone in the UK who has a water filter. Time to move to Wales boys? 😝 Why not try it out with a tour? 👍🏻
does a sleep mask not mess up your ability to wake up in relation into the sun rise? or is the wake cycle more related to temperature warming in the morning? i've really wanted to try it out. i suppose i could just try it out and find out XD
6:00: "I snore a lot, so my wife uses earplugs now" - what the HELL? This man has sleep apnea, which can be deadly & instead of fixing it, he worries about his wife? He needs to get a CPAP machine to breathe at night, that's ESSENTIAL for him.
I agree with you. Snoring is not a joke and is deadly. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine every night. I don't sleep well without it. It is essential to my wellbeing.
Great listening don't have sleep mask or ear plugs but I have been using a veg steamer electric for many years I like it and a big metal jug for my water been through a few like it
So glad I live in a country where the drinking water is perfectly drinkable straight from the tab. To filter out the subtle chlorine flavour I have a Britta filter. And for fresh air I have a jungle indoors and windows :)
I am building a tiny home and I am so glad I wasn’t addicted to stuff because it would of held me down. Because I don’t have a lot of money I had to think is this going to be needed in my new way of living and since I had no advice that was exhausting on its own.
I agree on home goods: Good individual/combined bed (inspired by German bed with separate duvets) Solid dining table (multipurpose) Furniture for family and friends to congregate Bookcase for books to reread Art and family photos I'll add home goods: Mason jars Mugs Multipurpose bowls Designated storage for notebooks and sketchbooks utilized with writing and art tools (to protect for later ideas and retrospection) Physical Zettelkasten (note card box or drawer case)
@@Baribrooks No particular company so far. I already had a duvet and two removable covers from IKEA years ago. With two side-by-side, twin-size mattresses (to personal preference), may fit better into a sturdy, king-sized bedframe. Measuring tape helps a lot.
Not very minimalistic is it haha. Ear plugs, sleeping mask, grounding thingy, white noise machine... That's a lot more gadgets than most people would use.
Before you buy a white noise machine: do you have your smartphone besides your bed? Mine does a great job playing natural noises at night: fire, water, waves or rain. So the upside is that I don't need a dedicated machine. The downside is that I've put effort into findig natural noises that are pleasant to me. Also, some people might bother to have their smartphone with them at night. A discarded smartphone might do this job and serve as an alarm clock without access to the internet.
Most of these items won’t add value to my life except for the hairdryer, good mattress, and a couch. If I own some of those, it would be “not so minimalist” of me. To each his own, interesting 😊
useful plants that I use I like to garden indoors because then it's pretty granted I'll have them when people start hoarding more and it adds to the air quailty
For camping I decided that I am "too old" to sleep on the ground. I have a mini rechargeable air pump, and a small air mattress, a few inches tall. I have been working towards backpacking; don't know what I'm going to do bed wise if I have to carry it. Maybe a hammock. BUT for car camping, and kayak/river camping, I have my back off the ground! Turning 30 changes things LOL
i had that rock mattress hahahah for my bad back, it was too firm, although i needed that. I had to add a thick mattress cover. i gave it away because my sister gave me hers which i love. mattress are very hard to buy. ive never figured out the formula.
I find the Ode fellow grinder to be very messy, I moved to a hand grinder which is much neater. The water drop trick to reduce static helped, but did not solve the mess issues
What items do you own that add the most value?
coffee mugs 🥰
Grounding strap
Mouth tape
Bicycle
Gymnastic rings
Privacy phone
My coffee machine and my yoga mat!
Xero trail runner shoes, an acupressure/reflexology foot massage mat, Yoga strap, Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker, stationary bike, and my backpack. All of my favorite things!

My IKEA dining room table is 15 years old. It’s very simple, and I love it! It’s held up very well, and we plan to keep it forever.
I also have an IKEA dining table. It’s extendable, classic, solid and nearly 10 years old.

Ikea furniture is all different prices and quality, it all depends on what you buy, but most Ikea stuff lasts if you take care of it.
the solid wood furniture from IKEA is often high quality. The really cheap plywood filled with cardboard stuff is where you're gonna run into problems

I agree on home goods:
Good individual/combined bed (inspired by German bed with separate duvets)
Solid dining table (multipurpose)
Furniture for family and friends to congregate
Bookcase for books to reread
Art and family photos
I'll add home goods:
Mason jars
Mugs
Multipurpose bowls
Designated storage for notebooks and sketchbooks utilized with writing and art tools (to protect for later ideas and retrospection)
Physical Zettelkasten (note card box or drawer case)
We've been thinking about getting individual/combined bed with separate duvets since our trip to Germany. Do you have a company you'd recommend?
@@Baribrooks No particular company so far. I already had a duvet and two removable covers from IKEA years ago. With two side-by-side, twin-size mattresses (to personal preference), may fit better into a sturdy, king-sized bedframe. Measuring tape helps a lot.
My sister puts strapping tape on her sofa where the cats like to scratch. Problem. Solved.
Wow they are some minimalists sitting here and discussing things and brands like every average cosumer ever
I don’t understand why you guys need all that stuff to help you sleep 😂
7:33 what therapy is he saying here that fixed his back pain? Interested for my husband.
Egoscue Therapy www.egoscue.com
I love extra, extra firm beds. Always have even when I was a kid
Another great sleep mask, real silk and $10 on amazon, Alaska Bear. Cheap enough to buy a few and great quality.
Make your own! So easy
Gosh, Josh', "The moon is beautiful". But then, your hair is like a mooncrescent.
I love ❤️ my grounding mat…🥰
Yep I buy things locally too
For camping I decided that I am "too old" to sleep on the ground.
Can you link the mattress?
Ikea stuff is often very very sturdy. Can't get rid of it even if one wanted. 😄At least stuff from 30, 25, 10 years ago
I donated quit a bit this week and found old makeup today I tossed . We got junk in house junk in the storage shed junk in the yard
So if you’re using ears plugs why are you using a white noise machine?! 🤷♀️
Touché lol
Not everything from Ikea is poor quality. I have an Ikea dining room table that I bought for $100 at least 25 years ago.
Would like to actually see your places near these items in place.
skip to 3:26 if you value your time. Seriously you guys call yourself minimalists with so much empty talk?
I'm not seeing any links. Please add links. Thanks. Enjoyed video.
WHERE ARE THE LINKS????? !!! hey !!!
Josh "I own more than 15 things...maybe 19 things."😅
No mobile phone? No computer? Knife? Bottles?
I find the Ode fellow grinder to be very messy, I moved to a hand grinder which is much neater. The water drop trick to reduce static helped, but did not solve the mess issues
Does anyone here get value from using a weighted blanket?! Thanks
Can’t sleep without it now. Mine is a 4 inch thick feather bed. It’s warm and heavy. Best thing ever
No
Grounding mats are bogus boys, it’s just placebo and fair enough if it helps you cope, but it’s just a thing.
I have to try this mask!
I have to try a mask. A reviewer on Amazon complained that this mask colored his white pillow blue. With photo.
Naked pull ups LMAO :)
lol yes I knew this guy had a hair dryer! I wondered if he used a lot of product in his hair
One advertisement after another. I need to remove you from the subscribe list. I feel comfort is an necessity.
water fountain outside my window, fresh air to sleep in..favorite local honey
What kind of back therapy?
Sounded like agasque.
