I had a 1970 124 Sport Coupe. I laughed my tushie off when the vent window came out. This made me miss my red one. My father made me sell it when mushrooms started growing I’m the back seat.
My first NEW car was a French Blue 1971 Fiat 124 Spider. I went back in at 1,500 miles for it's first oil change and wound up selling/managing that store for the next 12 years. In addition to the 124 series cars we also had the 850's followed by the 128 series - X1/9, 131s and the Lancia Beta cars starting in 1975. I still own 1976 Lancia Scorpion #1345 which I bought new in early 1977. We were always in the top 10 volume dealers in American and I toured the Fiat factory in Mirifiroi, Italy a couple of times on Fiat's dime. Although I went on to manage Honda stores after Fiat/Lancia's pull out of North America those were by far the most fun years I had in my 45 year auto sales career. Itialian car's just have soul. Viva Fiat/Lancia!
The bonnet opening that way actually makes perfect sense - it will never blow open and block your view of the road while driving!!
Those Fiats were known as real driver's cars back then. My late friend Leny who had an Italian car garage sponsored a 124 Coupe similar to this red one. It crushed the competition in its class at Mosport Park.
Probably the most beautiful car in the world. I still have the 1971 124BC that i bought myself for my 25th birthday. In 1977. It's currently in pieces being restored. I envy Pat, his looks perfect. for those of you like Rex, THIS is a car!
I had a 69 in red, always wanted a 70+ with the new hood and 1608cc. Mine looked much better after replacing the skinny minnie tires. I scored a set of wider six spoke Italian alloys with a bit of offset. Really made the handling shine too.

Ahhhh... the memories! My first car was a 1.6L Fiat 132GL and my second car was a bright orange with black trim 2.0L 131R (R for racing). I loved my 131R - it had a racing steering wheel and five spoke Momo alloy wheels. It was so fun to drive that I never put a cassette/CD radio in it - the sound of the engine was all the music I wanted!

My first car was a 124 cc. Loud as hell and when it was in the mood it was a beautiful car to peddle in the hills but my friend had to push start me so many times he gets night terrors when he hears the word fiat.
I'm so glad you had so much fun. My Grandfather owned one and he spent a lot of time and a bit of money converting it to bigger carbs (dual Weber 44 IDF), faster cams and it was RAPID. I think it made about 140 bhp, which doesn't sound like much, but the car weighed 1,000kg. He used to absolutely monster far, far more expensive cars and he loved driving in the country.
The bonnet opening like that is done so's that if you ever forgot to properly latch your bonnet, it won't fly up and slam into your windscreen, blinding you and potentially killing you in a crash. I've known quite a few people who've had their bonnets fly up and slam their windscreens giving them a moment of terror. But I've had an italian car and when I forgot to slam the bonnet the bonnet just rose up a little and flapped a little, and so you just pull over and drop it shut. None of that terror of the rear hinged bonnet.
Kudos to the owner , enjoy the journey through yesteryear , as a 68 year old had few 124 sports back in the day , and a few Lancia beta;s that 1600 1800 and 2000 litre twin cam was way ahead of its time , here in the UK its rare to find a good one due to weather , enjoy guys i know i have

Though not always feasible for a short video, I really think you need to spend a week with it. Or at least 200 miles to totally get what it was created to be. First 50 miles can be disorienting really when you’re dealing with something so different from what you’ve experienced so far. A hot blooded Italian car begs to be driven a “certain” way!
Great video! Beautiful Coupe! I had a 1969 124 Sport Coupe in 1971 and a 1972 124 Sport Coupe in 1976. I now have a 1978 124 Sport Spider that I have had for about 20 years. Those Coupes are really rare here in the US.
The coupes are rare everywhere now...I had a CC 1800 in yellow, man it looked so good in the flesh, much better than the pictures of it...
Which was your favourite? I have a feeling the earlier cars were dynamically better, at least lighter..
My old man has a 1974 124 Sports Coupe 1800CC had it since new, is original to how it came out, these cars are phenomenal in the way they perform and handle.

I had 3 124 coupes back in the 80's. I wanted a sports car but needed a back seat for my 5 year old boy. The coupe was the only car that I could afford that had a DOHC engine, 4 wheel disk brakes, and a 5 speed transmission. I wish I had one now. My son wouldn't like being in the back seat any more but these days he can drive himself.
The steering wheel angle is a little weird but that's because the Italians at the time held the steering wheel on the bottom at the 4 and 7 o'clock positions. These days, I'll sometimes hold the wheel on the bottom when I get to feeling nostalgic, and imagine I'm driving an Italian car.
I had a Fiat spider 2000 and love the rawness of these classics. It was a really useful classic because it could keep up with modern traffic with ease and stop as good as a recent vehicle. I now have a ND Miata, Z3,and C6 and none have that lovely raw feeling of just an engine and gearbox.
This chap is very original in his choice of car. Its a lifestyle to drive a classic

My first car was a 1976 Chrysler Galant, had all the quirks and features of an old 70’s 4 banger
I sold it for a 2007 Ford Focus ST as I wanted boost but luckily we have 3 other 70’s cars still in the family, a corolla with a 4AGE in it, an old TC cortina and a Valiant Charger
Try driving an old large car one day Rex, completely different story, making about 350hp, able to smoke tyres in 2nd gear, but they drift around the road because they are so large, definitely a fun experience

Bonnets opening at the front are inherently safer in the event of the catch failing as they cannot fly open obscuring the view at speed. Lots of sporting cars as designed this way including my Lancia Beta Coupe.

Nice one! My first car was a 1969 AC back in 1990 when they were only two decades old. Then my second car was another one because the rot took the first one out. Took the sill trim panels off and there was actually no steel under them!

I had the cc 1800, lowered all around Simmons wheels 10 inch tyres at the back with recaro seats. In the 80s. It was the car to be seen in in Sydney.
Those classic Fiats are hot!
Very advanced in their day being a twin cam, 5 speed and having 4 wheel disc brakes.

I had one back in the 70s. The engines are high compression double overhead cam. They’re fast.
Had one of these (my first car ) it was a 1600 1971 loved it! Very fast off the mark. I put 10” wide rear alloy wheels on the back of mine and stuck side pipes on it made a right noise!

I had a white 1600 series 2 in the 70's and my best mate (at the time) had a red one. The steering should be superb. if theres play there as suggested somethings worn. I've owned some pretty fancy cars, V12's, V8's and exotica. No other car was as much fun as my 124 sport. I'd have another in a heartbeat! Glad (and sad) they're fetching good money. Mine rusted on the sills... should have fixed it and kept it.

I had a yellow CC 1800 and loved it. The girl who worked in the coffee shop saw me with it and I took her out...The gear lever bush disintegrated and the shifter fell through the floor ten mins after we set off...I spent the date outside her house getting all greasy.
Also the only time the coppers just gave me a warning for doing over 50mph on Peckham High st...

Cool cars Fiats are often called the inexpensive Ferraris of the Car World that engine is a fairly well engineered engine and parts aren’t too difficult to find many Fiats in the USA have rust issues that. can interrupt the grounding of the electrical systems and they are notoriously known like British cars to have Backyard mechanic fixes that are unprofessionally done of course those can be difficult to diagnose and repair if you buy the car you should pick up a good Testlight , extra fuses , and some repair manuals and another trick i learned was to make up a Jumper Wire with Alligator clips on it that reaches from the negative battery terminal to the engine compartment worse case scenario you can temporarily use that to Ground a electrical circuit in order to drive the car to a safe place you can rinvestigate and repair the actual problem i’ve even taped that wire down the side of one of my cars to get me home that was over 100 Miles of a drive !

My old man had a 1974 124 Sport CC (1.8L), and that thing launched like nothing on Earth. I 'borrowed' it once when he was away and got busted- apparently he doesn't 'crossthread' the petrol cap! He took it well though. "-) Brilliant cars, if a tad unreliable sometimes- after all, FIAT stands for Fix It Again Tony!
This era Fiat engine 'spins' freely and the chassis is complementary. I met a stateside owner who traded-in on the sportiest 3rd generation Mustang, only to immediately sell it and return to this decade prior Fiat. These were eventually replaced by the 131 which was promptly modded-out to win the grueling World Rally Championship ~

Steering box was recirculating ball, seems like it needed adjusting. Like many here, my first was a US spec red 69 124 Coupe 1438/5 speed. My gift to myself for making it back from VN in 69. Many many trips on the SoCal Ortega Highway to San Juan Capistrano. Followed it with a 69 124 wagon, 76 131 wagon, 78 131 Brava.
Hinged on the front for safety, so if it's not secure it won't open up and block the windscreen ;)
Oh Yes ! Your 124 Sport series 2 is very beautiful. In Thailand have a few of this car. I saw your safty belt it's too low but you can modify it by taken the B pillar hanger from 1982 Lancia Beta coupe, You can fit it complete set from Lancia because it automatic seai belt.I think it more convenience.
These engines are designed to rev high to extract the performance and toe and heal driving is a must as well has some good old fashioned double clutching on the down shift to look after the gear box. That unusually small steering wheel makes the steering worse but easier to get into at least. Properly sorted the steering should be fine so this one needs attention.
That’s mintttt for an almost 50 yo car the owner did a good job

I had an ac 124. From memory it came with Twin Webbers, 4 wheel disc brakes, Alloy head as standard. Great car to drive. However when it broke down, the parts literally cost 10 times the cost of comparative Holden parts of the day. I had to get rid of it as it was sending me broke. As with most cars of that vintage, rust was a problem.

I had one of those at your age, when it was my age, so that's all of your lifetime ago but was an old classic even then. My bonnet latch wasn't good and at 78mph the bonnet would float up into the eyeline and I'd have to drop to 74 or something to get it to drop, so the art was to cruise at 78.9 mph. With the latch "fixed" (it was the pin that was loose, I'd wedge it with a bit of wood as that would last longer that a blob of weld, do you think the chassis had "some" flex...) it would go a good deal quicker. One friend with a Porsche 944 called it "The Milenium Falcon" as it looked sh*t but went like sh*t. A magic machine that went on to a friend and a friend of a friend.
I had one in dark blue in 1980 and wow, what a rocket! Had to sell it to get my house deposit, should have kept it, hey?
It's a Lampredi twincam, designed by the ex-Ferrari engineer. It's the most winningest engine in world rally championship.
Plus a a couple of World Sportscar Championships.
490hp from a 1.4 litre engine equipped with a monstrous single turbo without intercooler, that had to endure 24h races, in 1980-81. The sturdiness of that engine is incredible.

These cars only work in sunshine. Undersealed with pasta and structural paint. The first production car to have a bonded in windscreen. I had a 10 year old example in rainy England. One day I had to do an emergency stop. The car stopped AOK but the windscreen didn't! The metal lip to which the windscreen was bonded resembled a row of rotten/missing teeth. I actually ran over the windscreen. I loved the car but couldn't face the welding job so she got broken for parts.
Miss my cc so much .Fully restored and it threw a piston.Swapped it fora bike and some cash What was I thinking.
EXTREMELY heavy steering when trying to park etc.
I had the same model 2L with the twin Webber's and regret selling it.
Same as driving a Lada. Even the gearbox whine sound.

Miss the 124 CC.
These had GREAT steering back in the day, must be something very wrong with that one.
Might have needed new steering components-idler arm, pittman arm, tie rods?
The front end mounting is loose and not aligned, maybe. I had to correct this to get mine to drive properly again. Loose bolts on the 'girdle' under the engine will cause this, as well as worn parts. Also check free-play on the steering shaft to the steering box. You can tighten up the 'feel' a little at the box also. Tires will look toed out and car will have terrible handling. Must correct the toe-out and get tire vertical to have good handling. Good luck.
