    Great show, Stef. You've given us some very useful advice; never thought of electrical tape for preserving the ebonite surface from water. Many thanks from Paddy the Pademelon.

    Thanks Stef. Performing this exact maintenance on my 1990s M250 following a UA-cam video is what got me into the fountain pen rabbit hole for good 😊.

      Hey DB, cool to see you here 😂. I got Pelikan 140 couple of days before and want to check it’s piston. I find this great video, cause u can disassemble 140 and 400 the same way.

    Hello Stef, great video. I read somewhere, that it’s not recommended to put ebonite feed into ultrasonic cleaner.

    Fantastic video! Just asking for a friend --> but if the section has become discoloured because of soaking (careless I know!), how would one (the friend) go about reversing that discolouration?😳👍

    • @HistoricGentleman
      @HistoricGentleman 3 місяці тому +4

      you can use Dr. G's apothecary's deoxidizer to help with the color restoration or you can use mark hoover's deoxidizer kit from La Belle Epoch. Or one can use the methods used by vintage pipe stem restoration folks (soaking in household bleach and then sanding down and polishing)... there is also the method of using the bleach creme that women use to bleach their arm hairs and then lightly sanding and polishing with micromesh

    Do you have any advice on what to use as far as shining a vintage Pelikan 400NN or 140 up? Will Meguire's swirl remover 2.0 work to polish them and get super fine scratches out of the barrel and cap?

    • @nikossiotas
      @nikossiotas 3 місяці тому +2

      For watches acrylic glass i have heard that "turtle wax headlight cleaner and sealant" originally made for headlights of cars, when applied with "meguiar's" pads is doing very well.
      Although i have not tested it my self, neither on a watch or in a pen, and i don't know exactly which pads, the white applicator pads or the yellow soft foam, so be very careful !!
      Plus, i don't know if that will be ok to be used on fountain pens, since many vintage pens aren't acrylic or the same kind of acrylic as a car's headlight.

    • @williamcatalano1762
      @williamcatalano1762 3 місяці тому +2

      @@nikossiotas I've heard from a pen reviewer who does a lot of vintage restorations that Meguiar's will be fine on it, but wanted to double check. Just rub some of that 2.0 swirl remover on the barrel or cap and take blue shop towels or even a microfiber cloth and rub it in and it's fine. Yeah I don't know if I would try the turtle wax headlight stuff or pads. Thanks for the reply and heads up!

      people may use different methods on their pens. However restoring a pen is not just about making it shiny. My own methods are quite labourias and take time but i feel the end results are worth it. Cheers

    Instead of rubber from a bicycle air retainer i use a sewing elastic band, much easier in my opinion.
