    I just added Daly balancers to my 2 Eel (Seplos) batteries, thanks Andy for the video, makes me feel doing the right thing. Passive 150 mA balancing is too little for 280Ah cells.

      The Daly balancer will work as well, just be mindful of the settings it needs. I think they are using average voltage or some kind of stuff. It's in a video I made a while back about the Daly active balancer.

    I'm having issues with my 2 first generation Jakiper batteries, where they now shut off at around 51.5 volts... I ordered a RS232 to USB cable that is supposed to work with this BMS to look into more detail what's going on in there. If the packs are out of balance, is there any way to get them even again without this "surgery" through the settings in the BMS? And I actually suspect the SOC part of the BMS is shutting the battery down, not going by voltage... is that conceivable?

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia

      You never changed any parameters in the Jaki battery and Pace BMS?

    • @TheCruisinCrew
      @TheCruisinCrew 2 місяці тому

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia No, I have not changed any settings in the BMS... I have the cable now and the software doesn't seem to even let me change any parameters... however, watching the logs from the software I can tell that one cell in each battery is behaving odd; discharging much quicker than the other cells and overcharging when the other cells are still in bulk mode... my guess is these cells are likely toast and will need to be replaced... one thing I could try is to take a good cell from battery 2 and replace the bad one in battery 1 and see if that battery behaves normally after this "surgery"... at least the cells are not welded, so I assume I could get replacements!?

    15:40 After reaching the full absorbtion state and changing to float, my Victron MPPT´s decrease the Vbatt to 3,35V/Cell. So the Neeeey would stay on for ~50mV until the 3,3V is reached. So I think that should be okay. The Neeey would kick in in 50mV before Vmax and will stay on 50mV in float.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Рік тому

      Yeah, it is still not optimal with the Gen1 NEEY but workable. Usually, I don't float but turn on some loads then, so voltage drops a bit anyway. I'm happy to just turn it on and off manually, when needed. I'm sure the Jaki can handle a bit of imbalance and smooth it out. The Seplos batteries worked fine just the internal balancer after a while.

    • @launacorp
      @launacorp Рік тому

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia My setup is set with tail current. So I know, if the tail current is reached, the Battery is fully balanced. otherwise the tail current wont be that less. Then the MPPT´s shut of and my system is powered by the battery until it reaches the float voltage. Then the MPPT´s kick in to supply the load.
      But my system isn´t that big as yours and my Battery won´t charge that often to 100%. So every 100% here and there I know, that the cells where fully top balanced. 200Ah/24V with 12326Ah (total purchased Ah) with only 35 cycles says the smart shunt.

    crazy how far out these batteries can be. im using a drop in battery(amperetime) on one of my sites and i couldn't get it to 27.6v without overvolt shutdown. the bms is ass so i had to open the pack up and manually discharge the problem cell. now it'll get to 27.6 and i floated there so the bms would work. i normally do 27.6 adsorb and 26.8 float but i think this bms stops balancing at 27.5v. i may gut it and get a better bms

      With a 12V battery you need to supply at least 28V to the NEEY B- and B+ connector to start it up.
      This can be either an external power supply or a step-up buck converter which steps up 12V to ~30V. I have shown the setup here connecting the JK BMS to a 4s battery. It's the same principle though as you would use for the NEEY.

    I’ve been running a seplos BMS with 230ah cells for over 2 years, the standard balancer has kept everything in check, though the pack was properly balanced to start with! Remember add more stuff to your batteries increases the risk of some piece of hardware going wrong and it killing your cells.

    • @jacopo.scarpellini
      @jacopo.scarpellini Рік тому

      My Seplos bms managed to ruin the balance of my pack in just 4 months; I suspect cell number 9 was discharged because I have them on 2 shelves with one cable connecting cell 8 and 9; and the bms measures the voltage of cell 9 between 8+ and 9+ (I know it has a 9- lead but it looks like it isn’t used). So during charge, cell 9 appears to have a higher voltage (because of the voltage rise due to the cable resistance) and it is mistakenly discharged by the bms. There is a parameter on the seplos bms to set this resistance and now it’s reporting the right voltage, but now I have to stick an active balancer to redo the top balance

    Andy, do you able to check this active balancer when battery is on discharge mode? I've 280Ah lithium battery. I tried to fully discharge it (40V) for capacity testing, but it was failed. Because one of lithium cell (very bad one) discharge very fast to 2.5V and cell discharge difference will exceed to 0.5V, then battery stop. I want to know your opinion if I can use this NEEY active balancer for this scenario.

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Рік тому

      What kind of battery do you have when 40V is fully charged?
      If you have a bad cell, the balancer will not help with that.

      How can we understand, that several lower cells are bad? Because, for example, I always have 3 cells, that are lower than others on 0.035-0.008v in an hour after charging( or under the load diff increase to 0.050-0.100mv!) And no deviation at 3,5 and some time absorbsion.

That's why most BMS have only very small balance currents as over time they will manage to balance a Li-ion pack even with only 100mA or less.
      This concept totally fails with LiFePO4 though due to the very shallow charge curve with a steep rise in voltage just at the end. And only at this point (3.45V or above), balancing can be effective and even possible.

    Hello sir. I have searched all over and I can't seem to find an email address to contact you😢
    I have 2 parallel strings of 16 qty 304ah lifepo4 cells. I have been using them a week or so parallel to some 4s 12v 300ah ampertime packaged batteries. They seem to be working well so far... The 51.2v 900ah lot has been connected to my inverters and cycling well with equal voltages. All strings have active balancing... With one limitation.
    Have you any experience with such arrangements?
    Thank you kindly for your testimony and tributes.

      @@OffGridGarageAustraliaHello, thank you for your time and reply. The 12v batteries have a built in bms. I have asked the manufacturer and they say they each have internal passive balancing. Start of what? The balancer? That won't work at 52.5V = 3.28V/cell is far to low and all cells will be still in the flat area of the curve. There is no difference in cell voltage at this point. You need to be over 3.4V at least to see the spread.

    At this day and age where large prismatic cells are common, BMS makers should increase the balancing current to 100~500mA.
    Some argues that high current balancing is unnecessary IF the cells were fully top balanced before they were assembled. Counter Argument: Now really, did Jakiper top balanced the cells?

    • @thegolfhack9417
      @thegolfhack9417 Рік тому +1

      I personally don't think top balancing makes that much difference unless you have perfectly matched down to the milliamp and milliohm capacity and resistance cells, there will always be some drift over time

    • @timchambers5242
      @timchambers5242 Рік тому +2

      BMS designs should have default ~2A active balancer per 100A continuous rating. As a daughter board so it can be swapped for larger capacity. Real world may be less than the active balancer rating but it has to be more than the minimum amps it can detect. Otherwise you end up with it not on until charging 1A & this exceeds the useless

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Рік тому +3

      Cells will always drift. Especially after winter when you haven't fully charged your pack for 4 months.
