I absolutely love how Andy has developed his own sound and style over the years. In his earlier years, he was a Carl Fontana protege. He sounded just like Carl, only with a much better sound. Andy is an awesome trombone player, period!! That's why he is one of the busiest, if not the busiest trombonist in LA.
Andy Martin is an artistic blend of Bill Watrous’ extraordinary range, Carl Fontana’s tonguing and phrasing mastery, and Jiggs Whigham’s technique with his own extraordinary range and superb tongue technique making his playing look effortless and fluid! My favorite trombone player in town right now, who incidentally is also a member of the Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band in the Los Angeles area. Martin’s play “stays behind” [Fontana and Watrous were masters at “staying behind” while playing] thus not “buggalistic” like too many brass instrument players squeezed in the parameters of often too loud rhythm sections et al. not respectful of the delicate association of lips and a mouthpiece as opposed to guys banging their rhythm section gears without any restrain! I think that Andy Martin here is EXTRAORDINARY! Thanks for sharing this group of fine artists and musicians here on UA-cam!
Andy is getting some extra attention as the trombone player behind the Pixar animated feature Soul. Maybe some kids will start to think, “That Jazz music is pretty cool!” Any way to introduce younger listeners is terrific!
Amazing video and sound quality! I love Andy's playing, the guy swings big time. His sound, style, note selection when he improvises, geez he's brilliant on trombone!
That is an amazing solo by Andy Martin! Love his command of against the grain playing and fretting on the trombone. And just a natural bouncy BeBop feel with his tonguing on the horn ala Jimmy Knepper.
Andy is one of the what I call "SuperPlayers"and he's on a very short list. There is so little he's not capable of doing such that it's not even worth mentioning. Add that to the fact that he can SWING his ass off...and you've got perfection.
This is an amazing small group sample of his virtuosity, if you want to hear more in a big band setting, try his solo on Emily with Carl Saurnders Bebop Big Band. Amazing, on a chart originally intended for Carl Fontana.
@hanzpyotr I was playing 3rd trombone in NAU's Jazz 1 group, the group that performed with him! It was a great show, except for the sound system failing!
Extremely fine playing from all four musicians. I just wish the trombone mic wasn't popping with every articulation. Andy Martin has such a wonderful sound and is an enormously tasty and musical player, and it's a shame to hear any distortion of that. Anyway, bone can be difficult to mic and this comment isn't intended to be anything but helpful for future reference. Fantastic playing on a great tune!
Actually I'm pretty sure that's the 891Z. I don't think the 897Z was out yet when this was recorded. They look almost identical except that the 897 is a little smaller.
Andy Martin’s incredible time, and ability to form such creative lines and phrases in his solos make him my favorite trombonist of all time.

And that's why Andy Martin is my favorite trombone player and my idol.

I studied with Andy in 1998 and he is the MAN!!! He can play anything.
This guy is sounding better than ever. Love how his tone has developed over the years.

I love this Trombone player

I do not know better recording of alone together. Fantastic soli. Incredible piano and trombone and solid b&dr.
I get chills up my spine just imagining a pairing of him and Michael Dease!!!
I can not imagine what Bill is hearing when he plays. Fantastic!

Love his playing! It is awesome!
Just saw Andy Martin at NAU this weekend. Amazing player!

エモい!
Andy's trading 4s with the drummer was amazing! That is not an easy task in multiple ways.
Fantastic all around! Wonderful work by Andy. I loved it!
Whoa! Cool stereo trombone sound with two mic’s!
I like his sound!
Andover, MA in the house!
Que coisa mais maravilhosa desse mundo!
Love your playing Andy!!!
I don't understand how someone could dislike this video
Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt that their cat accidentally walked on their device.
Nice live recording. Good stereo image and transparency
Andy tore it up on this one! Damn!
Amazing trombone solo.
That is classyyyyy!!!!!!!
andy and bill sound amazing as do the drummer and tom warrington, son of johhny warrington cruising right along!

Never heard such a trombone before🥶🥵🥶🥵🥶
Fantastico!
Awesome sound. Interesting harmonic choices, great chops!
maravilhoso!!!
I know a hard working 18 year-old who will be auditioning for Andy Martin soon.
Kevin Hornbuckle what was the audition for?
wow!!!!!!

Absolutely agree. He's a fantastically musical player with a beautiful sound. It's a shame this mic did not really capture it.
Sweet...!
Great! I just wonder why the sound of the horn is strange for me like its recorded from two other places at the same time and souds like little echo..
great!!
maravilhoso
4:00 that was a nice touch by the camera man to get the bassist's reaction to the israel crosby lick
oh yeah!!!
so articulate, if only I could put him with Chet, Chet Baker / Andy Martin quintet !
Alone Together - reminds me of how we are living since March, 2020.
I can imagine Chick Corea improvising on this group, how would it be...rsrsrs
That bassist seems to know what he's doing.
Wonderful Trombone Jazz Recital
It is ANDY MARTIN that is top of the billon this track - not Bill Cunliffe, surely?
Every one does realize that this is Andy Martin - NOT Bill Cunliffe right?
Bill Cunliffe is the pianist, but yeah should be Andy Martin - Alone Together. He is most featured in the tune
But it's Bill's group so the credit of this piece should be Bill's itself
Well, appropriately good but you really put yourself in your place playing Connies tune!
sorry, just saw the credits at the end
what are the names of the drummer and bassist?
Actually I'm pretty sure that's the 891Z. I don't think the 897Z was out yet when this was recorded. They look almost identical except that the 897 is a little smaller.
Is this in a CD I can buy?
what brand of trombone is that?
It's a Yamaha 891z. Awesome bone!!
Anyone know what horn and mouthpiece he's using?
It's most likely a customized Yamaha YSL-891Z. Mouthpiece is probably Kanstul CL 45.
Ugh trombone
:/
What did it do to you lol
