How Much Weight Can a Barbell Hold? | STRENGTH TEST
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 жов 2018
- We've seen dudes load up lots of weight on the bar and we've seen it bend a bit but have always wondered what it'd take to bend it in half. Solution? Load up the bar with thousands of pounds and see what it'd take to break the thing in half! Did we succeed? We definitely gave it our best shot.
What should we test out in the future? Let us know!

I say for twice a week
Don’t feel like deadlifting today
You are a bisciple
Ah yes a fellow member of the church of iron, bless your gains
That driver can now proudly tell people "I lifted a 1770 lb barbell"
Actually 2000 lb lmao!
Underrated comment mate 😂👏🏻
But I see why it’s underrated, because many folks don’t understand the joke.
Chris Hernandez its not hard to understand what? lol
fatcat s example you don’t understand what I’m saying
The tractor can lol
That just shows how strong Eddie hall is to the point where normal people need a machine to lift what he does
DonkerKraig the crazy thing is buff dudes aren’t normal guys, they’re pretty strong dudes and even they’re needing to use a machine.
That’s kinda how world records work my guy
Steffen Pedersen yeah but the weight they brought in the machine for Eddie can do casually
So yeah, eddie is no more lol. Long live the king @Hafthor
@@silvioramos6600 I'm not sure how thor doing 1 kilo more than eddie completely undermines his record. He was still the first to do it.
Very interesting. I'm very impressed that the bar didn't break. Those things are very safe under normal use.
This is what stops me from going to the Gym. Don't wanna spoil the Barbell after my 1200lb deadlift.
lol
Same
Same here bro
i overhead press 1200lb for warming up. Then i lift the entire gym.
I got thrown out of my gym, after breaking several of them.
The fact that someone can lift 1000+ pounds is crazy
Eddie Hall The beast WSM 500kg deadlift recorder (1102.31lbs)
Eddie hall right there for ya
Issa Croissant Eddie hall. He’s been doing strongman along with doing a lot of deadlifting and deadlift accessory movements to achieve a 500KG (1102lb) deadlift. Plus he could probably rack pull the weight of a Volkswagen, if the rack could even hold that amount of weight up.
And now Thor too
Thor made Eddies lift look awful. He lifted it like he was warming up for 520kg. The man is on another level.
Incredibly, the barbell didn't yield until the 1200 pound load was applied. And most of that weight was being suspended on the very ends of the barbell, where it produces the greatest amount of bending stress. It's safe to say that no man on earth is going to be permanently bending a properly-loaded barbell anytime soon.
Depends on the bar. There are videos of people bending cheap barbells.
Hold my beer
It could break due to shear stress too. Or with even less if you have a closer grip. Its super easy to calculate tbh
@@adrianhalvorsen7013 The barbell would yield by bending long before it would shear in half. It's basically a steel beam with point loads. The only way it could fail in shear is if you applied a concentrated load right next to a support, which is never going to happen in real use.
@@johnbarron4265 of course im just providing some extra information, its either shear of moment that breaks it (seeing as we have no axial loads) But a close grip meaning 1 point load in the middle would make it yield way faster. Do you happen to know a barbells yield stress due to moment or shear? I would assume around 300-400 N/mm^2
imagine returning the barbell to the store and being like, "yeah it isnt good enough, it bent"
That's epic

better than what you can do
@@kaiden9446 Doesn't matter, along with the fact that both of us don't actually know what Wiley Minix can lift. You can fully acknowledge that someone is stronger than you, but still have your doubts if it wouldn't be better for someone to lower the weight by 20 pounds and maintain proper form.
Are professional soccer players above the rules of the game, simply because they are better than you and me?
Soccer😂😂😂
It's a max deadlift, what do you expect?
I was talking about the actual caterpillars form because everyone always comments on people’s form in workout videos and it gets super annoying.
Well, this was an ego boost. I'm a big guy, both strong and overweight. When I was working out my deadlift hit 470 so seeing them at 495 makes that seem impressive. Never considered myself buff because I'm not the image of atlas, but this still changes my perspective.

Remember when I got my first EZ-bar due to living in a tiny space, can be used for all sorts and the fact that it could handle 100kg meant you could also do a bit of deadlift and rowing with it too despite it not being absolutely ideal for that, it was fine for a newbie, quite versatile. I remember people saying get a proper barbell that thing can only hold 100kg mate. Yeah well when I can curl 100kg I'll fuckin' let you know, I'll send the postcard via flying pig airmail.

well i think it would have holded more. think of it like a muscle. you guys kept putting more and more. Which meant lifting more.
if someone's max is 500
and they keep doing 500 their arms will tire and won't do 500 anymore. Eventually lifting less. i think all the weight you guys put was bending it but the more you put the more it bent each time. Eventually only bending at 2000
i think that if you were to do 2000 from the start it would have lasted longer.
i hope what i am saying is making sense
@@I_AM_3.6.9. That makes sense. But if someones max was 2k, they wouldn't start at that weight! And it still would have been severely bent

Good example of how steel is still a lot stronger in the elastic zone. The bar won’t return to normal but the steel can carry a lot more weight after it is deformed.
Im just super impressed by those collars
“Ain’t nobody wanna lift no heavy-ass weight.”
Quick answer: More than you can.
Love how it took a machine to pull up 2000 lbs and there was a 2 man deadlift that pulled 1870 off the ground.
Joking aside, regular barbells start to jiggle like noodles when you get to 10 plates, on the “close grip” (closer than the straps shown here) trap pick up shrugs, and then start to add chains and dumbbells. Gets the weight to the 1000-1200 lbs range. Bar turns into noodle, and does not return to straight form. High density olympic bars hold good.

Der Hof 2007 they may be wider but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are stronger, why would rogue spend more money to make a stronger strap that is pointless, I assume they go up to around 4,500 lbs and then they bump up the weight capacity just for marketing. Until I see someone put 10,000 lbs on them they are fake numbers for marketing

Whoever made that bar made ALOT of prototypes like damn that thing was NOT going down without a fight!

Yeah
Those straps are designed for thousands of pounds.
i've seen them start bending very slightly at my gym at around 290lb to 310lb , we have all rogue barbells
Rogue uses spring steel for a lot of their bars. They deflect but they bend right back, as they're supposed to. The bar in this video is a "stiff" bar, which has no ductility to the metal... so once it's bent, it's bent. Bars that bend are typically used to aid a deadlift, and are usually only found in powerlifting. All other strength sports that involve a barbell use stiff bars.
Sky Guy How does deflection aid in dead lifts? Does it allow the lifter to carry more of the initial pull rather than how a stiff bar essentially says “no”?
@@mtb416 the "whip" means that the point where you lift the weight from the floor is higher that it would be without it. This allows a lifter to kind of "cheat" the lift, but that's not the biggest benefit. When the bar is "bent", it naturally wants to follow a straight path. This makes the chance of bicep or shoulder injury far less likely. In the history of deadlifting, there are zero cases of someone using double overhand/hook grip on a deadlift bar ever tearing a bicep.
They look like they would be amazing dads. If they are, you guys look like amazing dads 😂😂
I have the exact same bar! I was going to try and set a new max tomorrow now I guess I have to go buy a stronger bar. Don't want it snapping and damaging my floor.
