- Here we have Maria Callas inhabiting one of her signature roles. This 1956 performance of Puccini's "Tosca" is not identified regarding location so perhaps some Callas devotee can chime in with a comment in this regard. It's another discovery from the dusty crates at UA-cam channel TheMotionDevotion, in this case an unlabeled Betamax videocassette of recordings from television.
Our curator could not resist the urge to upload this clip next to Patti LaBelle & Morgana King in a side-by-side tribute to the DIVA-tude that all three epitomize.

She sang with intention. She sang from and actors point of view. She was a singing actress. I think opera singers can learn from her commitment to intention. Love this
Yes!
Damn. The anguish and pain she expresses here are so intact with the lyrics that she breathes life to this role. Maria Callas is truly a great actress.
I just burst into tears whenever I hear this... that's how it should be. Thank you, Maria.
you can't like or dislike Callas. She is far above criticism.
perfect! You are perfectly right.
Sofia Noiti No one is "far above criticism."
RMPsumma it was just an expression of genuine enthusiasm and one I agree with
Pfff, that Callas fanatism makes me sick. she was a great pefformer and actress but as a vocalist she was average most times.
@@davidmuller9938 Too bad for you.
Ah, the woman who snatches me away from Pop. Once I heard her, I simply couldn't forget the voice. Once I listened to her, others were becoming insignificant. To the greatest interpreter of art in the world, with love. Thank you so much.
People are too judgmental. Maria Callas was a human being -- a splendid singer and magnificent actor -- but still a human being, with faults, inconsistencies, but oh so many sparkling moments. I watch her when I feel like crying with joy.
If you call supernovas sparkling moments...
Incorrect. She was a goddess!
I feel that Callas was unsurpassed in her ability to find the poetry and drama in her roles and in their individual arias. She unselfishly placed all of her strength and even her weakness in the service of musical drama.
Finally, here it is - the greatest opera VIDEO ever filmed! (inspirationally, despite 60-year-old equip) The young Maria, at supreme vocal & expressive peak, oozes with utter despair. Then her poor lost soul looks me right in the eyes and BEGS ME PERSONALLY for relief & salvation! I am emotionally shattered - I sob & weep again.
Interesting that despite hating this role and not wanting to do it, she at least put forth the effort to learn it and give it more than just a solid technique. Hats off to her for that. She really did set the gold standard for vocal acting/physical acting in opera.
I totally agree that Callas is absolutely the BEST and will never be surpassed. I feel very touched by her angelic voice and her true emotions. I also admire her musicianship.
I am amazed with the depth I see in her eyes while she is singing..what a great human being
She is a legend, she is a religion~ She is too great to be true~ If there were not youtube or any footage of her. I couldn't believe somebody can have this level of artistry which ever been achieved.
Morgan Alan x
The greatest actress ever to grace the operatic stage.
Others play Tosca. Callas IS Tosca. Magnificent.
well, this aria belongs to Ponselle. still Callas is magnificent.
This is a segment from the Ed Sullivan Show Nov. 25, 1956. Callas performed some scenes from Act II of TOSCA with George London.
Divine! When I sing Vissi d’arte it’s impossible for me not to be inspired by the great Maria. There's always a bit of her in every note I play
How lucky we are to have this on video.
She's such a performance ... If I could count all her expressions it would be an entire different form of sheet music
Maria Callas. The supernova of opera.
The voice here is completely in shape!!Very supported by the body and firm!! Brava
THE FACE OF GREATNESS.Just look. So glad we have a video here. She was not only the Uber-singer we all love and revere, she eas also a magnificent Performer - a true actress. So many people forget that Opera is musical theatre...
Callas was pure perfection in her acting of this aris. She kept the energy and intention throughout the piece. You want to be a great opera singer. This is where you have to go and she did it all the time.
This is "The Ed Sullivan Show", November 25, 1956. Maria Callas and George London sang from Act 2 of Tosca on the show.
The torturous supplication in her voice evokes an endless response of brava from her adoring fans. Brava, Maria! Thanks for your gift of great artistry!
Callas ha segnato nella lirica un punto di non ritorno. Purtroppo poche sono le cantanti contemporanee che sono state in grado di raccogliere l'eredità di un tale mostro sacro. Indimenticabile!!!!
Unforgettable, She lives and sings for ever!
The knife edge toward sharp that she maintains particularly in her upper register makes her notes spin with excitement and passion. Brava!!
It's crazy to me how she disliked this role and still performed it with such passion never seen before, and it's also crazy that Puccini himself wanted to cut this aria because he thought it was putting a stop to the flow of the music
I cry everytime i hear her sing. She turns herself inside out when she performs.
This clip is from The Ed Sullivan Show. I saw it when it was first broadcast circa 1953 on CBS. Alva Henderson
She is the highest paid singer in the opera history and the public loves her, especially in France and England for good reasons. This said it all! In addition, comments from her other admirers show that she touches our hearts profoundly!
I wish, I wish, I wish that the life of this great lady had not mirrored the anguish she portrayed so eloquently.
Callas' prime was longer than any other Opera singer in history, from 1940 to 1958. And her vocal issue were due to the extreme weight loss of almost 100 pounds within a year, 1953 to 1954 to be exact. The weight loss was the root of her vocal issues, everyone else had vocal issues during their prime, even Sutherland had them...Callas, however, did not have any vocal issues before 1955 whatsoever, her technique was perfect, she was a solid assoluta before 1955, if somebody did not like her timbre is something totally different. And of course Onassis destroyed the rest of her voice once she met him.
Actually, there have been some recent (early 2000's) arguments that Maria's vocal decline was because dermatomyositis (she was diagnosed later on in life with it, and two Italian researchers made a very convincing argument for it) - which can cause calcification of muscles all over the body, including the vocal chords. At the end of her life, she was had become a mezzo soprano because of it. She had every potential to create just as beautiful and breathtaking music singing mezzo soprano literature, but she wouldn't allow herself to admit defeat to "the voice" as she called it. As a result, she strained and tore herself in the final years of her career - which was made worse by her lack of consistent practice once she and Onassis entered full swing. The art she created during this time was stupendous, in fact I consider some of her best "Vissi D'arte's" to be the last ones she sang in public in 1964, but the effect it had on her voice was devastating (not even taking into account how far she pushed herself when performing), and left it in shreds.
I agree completely.... stress and pain killed her :(
chosentenore I. Always despised Onassis. He destroyed her.
Great and brilliant. La Divina.
what a beautiful talented woman. she is unparalled.
Love you, Maria. Always.
ME TOOO!
She looks lovely, what a treat to see this!!! Yay I love her!
The supreme voice off all Time Callas my love....
Tears that is all I have she is the best always the emotional giant of Opera
Maria, nobody can sing like you did and ...do. You are always alive.
She stood alone, incomparable and needless to say supreme.
Non seulement une chanteuse exceptionnelle jamais égalée, mais également une tragédienne hors pair qui s'investit à fond dans son personnage : c'était là tout le grand art de Maria !
I've never seen this particular clip of Callas... unusual for 1956..great!!
She`s my favorite opera singer!! She is the best for me, love you callas.
Yes, you are right, it was Ed Sullivan- an unprecedented 15 minutes of opera in prime time on a Sunday night! Amazing!
This performance I views when it was done live on the Ed Sullivan Show in the 50's. Metropolis conducted, George London was Scarpia. The cast was brought over from the met where I believe they performed the opera that day. This abridged version for TV started this abridged version after Cavaradossi is gone from Act II, and begins with Scapria and Tosca and ends with the Vissi D'arte. I still hv the original tape recording I made of it off the TV sound. Fortunately we have this clip. Unfortunately TV cameras at that time were not so good at close ups == distorting images. So glad we have it though.
DASS IST ES...!!! Jawoll... Diese Stimme ist und bleibt einmalig!!! Perfekt... ☺☺
Callas' appeal is that of an uncultivated voice, You can readily identify the pureness and freshness of her voice. So many soprano voices are brittle and lack harmonics because they have been so cultivated. Callas and Anita Cerquetti are two of the best spinto sopranos I have ever heard. Sadly, we lost Cerquetti this year and hers was a natural voice, full of harmonics and dripping with beautiful tone. Cerquetti got her moment when she had replaced Callas at the Met when Callas was ill. If you must compare, compare technique and eveness of tone. A voice is God-given and its just a matter of preference,
+Gina Colao Decker Cerquetti did not replace Callas at the Met. That was Leonie Rysanek who replaced her as Lady Macbeth after Bing fired Callas from the Met (yes he wa a goof). Antia Cerquetti replaced Callas in Norma after the infamous Norma walk-out in Rome (1958)......
She reached the status of the divine. Everyone else is a spectator.
There are some people you would like to live past a billion years. She is one of them.

Great performance as usual and interesting tv shots for 1956!
Hey....you! If you read this comment at the same time that diva sings, stop it NOW and just watch the majesty up there!
Brilliant 🎭
INCREDIBLE
Thankyou for sharing this beautiful music and sung by Maria Callas ofcourse .Cheers, John.
Someone here mentioned this was from the Ed Sullivan Show. I'm not so sure.Sullivan aired on CBS and unless I'm incorrect, she is performing under the baton of Dmitri Mitropoulos who conducted the NBC Orchestra. I also this scene contains George London as Scarpia. As far as comparing Sutherland to Callas....apples and oranges. Sutherland mastered the art of Bel Canto. La Callas....one either loves her or hates her. "I" adore her! She was the epitome of a Diva who may have had her vocal flaws, but LOOK AT HER. She commanded the stage and the music. Her depth of artistry is unparalleled.
completamente de acuerdo con usted. amo a la callas.El arte de maria jamas será igualado
+bravaLiz No, Mitropoulos was not an NBC artist. He recorded with the Philharmonic and with the Met Opera for Columbia (CBS). There is a considerable amount of video of Act II with George London as Scarpia floating around. It is the Ed Sullivan Show, live from what later became the David Letterman Theater and is now Stephen Colbert's.
+bravaLiz XXXX YES ONE IS THE SUPREME ACTRESS ,THE OTHER THE SUPREME VOCALIST ,BUT BUT BOTH SUBLIME XXX
Yes, this is from the Ed Sullivan Show, the very first broadcast according to what I've read. There is a version available of the entire segment with George London as Scarpia. Callas, London, and Mitropoulos all greet Mr. Sullivan and take a final bow in front of the curtain.
It is from the Ed Sullivan Show. Here's the whole thing:

The ones who're brightly burning, last the shortest. She'd give all to us, until the end of her life. We still can't understand how to be Callas.
Não basta ter a voz,a potência e a afinação. Ela tem o carão! Extraordinária!
There is Callas ... and then there are all the others
The one, the only, The Callas.
