It very much IS a prayer! Mourning the loss of love, and hoping that her suffering will benefit the whole world! Just as much the Chaplet of Divine Mercy as Desdemona's prayer from Verdi's Otello. I can see in Maria's eyes that she gets it, and it makes me wonder who she was thinking of in that scene... Thank you, Maria! Thank you for your prayers!
One of the remarkable things I find listening to Callas is the detail in her performances, this is ravishingly beautiful and she uses the finest gradations of tone and shading of volume, and a huge range of so subtly different facial expressions to make this just sublime. I enjoy many other ladies singing this but Maria Callas makes every moment come to life... each time I listen it seems like there is more to relish...
I am so in love with this woman!!!! I don't care if there are any better sung versions out there. For me she has "IT". She connects so deeply to the music she sings, she has that untouchable charisma and pathos...it goes so above and beyond the perfect technique, beautiful timbre, accurate musicianship, etc. She communicates so well - and that is where it is. This aria is incredible.
No commenr
This is Callas almost at the end of her career, but despite a couple of minor vocal blemishes she moulds the cantilena of Bellini's aria with such perfection. How can we fail to be moved ? She sings from deep inside the words and the harmony. She is the frail Amina , sleepwalking and singing of her lost love. I can understand that some don't like her voice, but her artistry, communication and emotion are beyond question.
Perfect interpreter of Amina in this beautiful melody! Many years ago my father had said he had seen the first sentence inscribed in gold lettering on Bellini's tomb!
Just look at her:she sings with her eyes and mouth and her whole body as Bernstein pointed out. No one has ever been able to do that like her: Pure musicality.
Callas always sing the text. When she sings grieving arias, your heart melts and sways with her tremendous singing. I don't care if her voice deteriorate too early, it is the emotions that give life to opera not just the singing. Brava La Divina!
@@himmatsingh1593 we are talking about Callas's interpretation. We don't care you and your another great singer. Thank you very much, but we don't need!
One of the things that always amazed me is that Callas barely seemed to open her mouth when she sang coloratura. Unlike most other singers who contort their mouth every which way to try and hit each note. Much love.
Yes the voice can be ravishingly beautiful and is the vector for her artistry. This recording surely puts to rest the claims of those who say she was simply a good actress. No , Callas was above all a phenomenal singer who even late in her career, as here, could move us to tears with her voice.
Yo i think she is da truth!!!! I love her.... I dont care what anybody says bout maria's voice cause thats proof she can sing beautifully!!! She made me like opera!
What a truly great, great artist. Each note, each phrase was imbued with magic and true understanding beyond us all. I applaud you La Callas. May your recordings live forever.
Quel compositeur ! quel maestro ! quelle diva ! Ici, pour l'Histoire de la musique... 😑
i love closing my eyes while listening to her and hearing the emotion in her voice... and when i open them again, the feelings are also reflected on her face... beautiful and very touching...
Callas eterna.
the only artist who has ever provoked a genuine emotional response from me with Bellini. What comes off as quaint or even cartoonish from others is heartbreaking from Callas.
Her voice is the most divine, deeply and perfect that the world had seen.....no one will have this voice ....she's was unique....the last greek goddess that existed....the goddess of music...thank you Maria, for your work and inique voice.
Speechless! The voice is there and is obedient to her intentions. A mastercloass in how to handle a recitativo, the phrasing, the colouring etc. Fantastic to see how little she moves, her facial expression in total control (Madame Bartoli! That one is for you and your horrible grimaces). The pianissimi like a violonist....and then Amina s sadness sopratutto. How she keeps to the dramatic core ...all that you can only find with the one and only " Maria Callas"....In some of the comments they line out Patti and Melba, Well, Patti never was an expressivo singer (she even said that as a singer you should not go into emotion because emotion distorts the vocal line) and Nelly Melba. The vocal line of Maria Callas is somewhere inbetween Luisa Tetrazzini and Rosa Ponselle. Muzio also comes alive in her voice when it comes to be heartbroken....But Callas was Callas and I do not think that any of those ladies inspired her (even if she liked Ponselle very much quoting that she Ponselle had the better material...this means also that Ponselle did not use all her possibilities). Callas was the genius and that is something one cannot explain and it was something she haedly understood herself....Rest in Peace Maria...You are the one and only for eternity....
agree, but not everyone is able to have "Callas face expression"........obviously Mme Bartoli does not have this capacity, but she has a terrific spectrum of expression, as well as the inner sense of interpretation !!!!! she's also a wonderful musician....to "take on her facial expression" seems to me very superficial a comment, especially as we don't have many artists of this caliber ! it's "small", and show the limitation of the critic.......
Nedo Marco - Italia
I have loved her forever and after seeing the movie about her my admiration only increased. What a gift to the human race!!!! She truly was the great artist. Honest and true to herself at any cost.
Why and how is this woman able to sing this way?in Philippine idiom we say "she was wide awake and with a big basket when God showered the earth with talent"
DEAR ALL, DO NOT FORGET SHE WAS A GENIUS AND CAME TO THIS WORLD TO SHOW TO ALL SINGERS WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WHEN SINGING AND INTERPRETING. THIS IS BREATH-TAKING AND DIVINE. ALCE2008
10 years after the sublime performance at la scala she is more dramatic, more tragic and more heartbreaking in her mourning for her lost love! MARIA CALLAS PRIMA DONNA ASSOLUTA!
This is not singing. It is a PRAYER!!!!!! Thank you MARIA!
I totally agree with you👍👍

C'est complètement, totalement, absolument ça. Etourdissant !
Possibly my favourite of all Callas's filmed performances. The fragility and sadness are tangible.
Yeah, like, wow.
She was BORN to sing Bellini!!! and Verdi, and Donizetti, and Rossini, and Puccini, and pretty much EVERYTHING!!!
She was BORN TO SING! Fullstop.
This is a good example of why María Callas was the twentieth century’s greatest singer. There will never be another like her.
Unica per sempre!
I know. She made Elisabeth Schwarzkopf cry (too).
Anna Moffo sang this equally well.
Immortality.
Civilizations will rise and fall
A voice like this will lift Mankind up.

She is the reason I started singing opera. La Divina
Maria Callas is the best opera singer ever!
NO ONE SINGS THIS ARIA LIKE CALLAS! PERFECTION.
It is sublime.
Bellissima e unica !!! Grazie.
this voice was not ugly. it was wonderfull filled with magic. she was LA MAGICA.
Divine, magnificent and perfect. This is opera!
È sempre una grande emozione sentirla...una voce sublime...incomparabile!
This was 1965? Unbelievably great. Still greater than any version by any other singer.
Just look at her:she sings with her eyes and mouth and her whole body as Bernstein pointed out. No one has ever been able to do that like her: Pure musicality.

What a beautiful singer and conductor! The orchestra is impecable 💕
The conductor is Georges Prêtre

Some writer very sagely observed that while others sang in phrases, Callas sang in paragraphs...
i can't help but cry as i listen to this beauty...
She does it with so many emotions yet so effortlessly

I watch this at least 40 times. Just can’t get over with it, even in my sleep. The voice, the expression like story telling. Viva Maria!
Perche' piango sempre quando canta? Mi tocca fino in fondo all'anima. So touches me to my core!
You can't separate her artistry from her voice, a magnificent voice!
