I’m not sure steroids were a shameful subject back in the early 70s. I don’t think they were made illegal until 1989 or 1990. It was probably his ego talking about the steroids having little to no effect. In bodybuilding they must all have massive ego’s in order to succeed i Suppose
I think the public’s perception of bodybuilders back then, was that anyone who got big like Arnold, was simply a juice head and were nothing more than a result of chemicals. I think Arnold was downplaying them to try and change the public’s perception of that time period. It’s true that steroids play a role, but without Arnold’s genetics and hard work, you’ll never see those results on an average person.
@@reedrex1 hes got a huge ego but you need that kind of confidance if you want to win, theres no team spirit in body buildings its all about me me me and it has to be
You can visibly see, at 5:23, that Letterman feels completely insuperior to the Arnold. I loved how Dave would spontaneously walk back towards the green room and ambush his fiance like that. Add to that the marvelous tribute he paid to America for allowing him to come here. I love you, Arnold.
As a language learner, I must say the efford he put in learning the language is tremendous. You have no idea. He has just conquered the USA. Unbelievable. The unimaginable career.
It's easy to learn a language when you live in a country that uses it mainly. It just becomes your own main language. I watched van damme trying to record an advert in France, and he actually struggled with his own native language. Forgot words... or how to put them together properly.

Action heroes like Arnold were a massive part of the Action movie era of the 80s and 90s. There are current action heroes like Dwayne Johnson, who have successfully continued the trend, but will never truly match the nostalgia of the 80s Action movie genre.
Mr. SEA so was Sylvester Stallone who was Arnold’s biggest rival in action genre by 1985 and through the rest of 1980s into the mid 1990s before their careers started to wane as started to make several flops in 1997 and started to become friends in late 1990s as well as business partners with Bruce Willis
The Rock is the new Arnold really. Started off in a physical show WWF, got to the top, hopped to Movies, plays the big guy with charisma and humour and no doubt will soon be a politician.
Absolutely amazing! Arnold's personality is as strong as his body. No wonder he became a supersatar (my favorite actor of all time) and the governor of California
I truly LOVE this guy🙏🏻♥️ My good physical condition at 51 is actually because of his influence at an early age.. I saw Conan at the cinema when i was 13(1981) and that opened my eyes. ARNOLD FOREVER 🙏🏻♥️🇱🇺
I'm 44... Me and every other kid my age grew up idolizing this man. There will never, ever be another. He's the man. And he would have been an incredible US President if our laws allowed it. I get why our laws don't allow it, but he'd have been a great exception to make.
I never really thought about Arnold Schwarzenegger as being anything other than an enormous pumped up guy. But after seeing this interview and the movies Twins and Kindergarten cop I can't help but love him, because he is a very nice, charismatic and funny guy! And because he does not pretend to be funny, he is even funnier, that's the secret of being funny.
You can see from this interview why some in Hollywood (Sylvester Stallone, Lou Farrigno) disliked Arnold. His confidence and ego that made him a superstar in bodybuilding is still manifest. It is what made him a great man and successful in 3 different careers, but it turned off others who were steamrolled by his oversized ambition.
Females used to scream his mame and cream in their pants. Why can't females do the same with me? ... oh wait a minute, I know, because I'm mot Arnie Schwarzenegger, that's why.
This dude is simply a badass....the way he handled Dave is just how ya had to handle him...push back hard when needed, keep control, good sparring, gain respect.
Beka Machurishvili They estimate Arnold’s IQ is upper 130’s range, that really shows, if he was mediocre Letterman would play with him like a mouse, but he just try to keep his pace. Don’t get me wrong Letterman’s IQ is no less, but it is very rare for a bodybuilder to be that smart.
Amazing man, his greatest film is predator. He has been such a huge success in life, film industry, business, politics and bodybuilding!!!. Incredible, most people wouldn't achieve 1/5 of what he has done.
Adam is the coolest so freaking refreshing. I had no idea he admitted abusing test so early on in his career. Now if everyone else who is on the gear, ahem THE ROCK, would man up and confess.
VHS Copy of Seinfeld Because that would hurt his image and its probably too late now, if he came foward now everybody would be asking why he waited that long lol

Can´t be President.. Well I just ran for governor of the largest state in the country. And I won! Could YOU do that?
Don't understand why some people don't care for Lettermen, he's a good interviewer with most of his guests knowing what questions to ask while trying to be witty and funny with them to try and make them feel comfortable as possible at the same time, it must not be an easy thing to do while having to have so many different kinds of guests on his show thru all those years that he was on!!! Easy to be critical of other people but I rather try and stay positive of others!!!!! Thank God for Utube especially during this covid thing, and stay safe everyone!!!!! Hopefully it will be over with sometime soon!!!!
Somewhere Mildred Baena is watching and sighing as she fantasizes about Arnie. She then shakes her head at the silliness of her thoughts and goes back to cleaning.
I remember reading an magazine interview with him right around the time of Conan. He said he'd be more popular than Bronson, Eastwood, or any other action movie hero of the era. His confidence (arrogance?) was over the top. I thought to myself, "Sure, how many other roles can there be for a massive bodybuilder with minimal dialogue? This guy's in for a rude awakening." How wrong I was.
People will say that is his arrogance but in order to succeed you must have that attitude and self belief. Only if you believe in yourself so much you will push yourself again and again after every failure until you finally find the way. Those who don't have that, give up very quickly.
@@Noname-rj6gw His arrogance only works because of the body building thing. He's like a comic book character. People expect him to be arrogant and smoke a huge cigar, that became his trademark, it fits perfectly with his comic book superhero body. @@AdamSkovran bro he went from a poor autrian guy that went alone to america to bodybuildimg legend and being the best at it to this day, To be a movie star, to be a gourvernor and rich asf. No need to be humble about that shit
@lau7903 yeah, that's exactly what i'm saying he is cocky rightfully and delightfully :)

@@user-dt9jr3db7d lol YES!!!!🤣
Stewardess: Sir, during takeoff you must remain seated.
Lol
I was sitting in the studio audience during this tapping. I was in the city to take a polygraph for job I was interviewing for.. stopped at a diner w/ my bf before hand. The waitress asked if we liked David letterman- of course we were big fans of the show. So she proceeds to offer us 2 tix to see the show that night as she couldn’t make it. Needless to say I never took that polygraph nor did I get that job, but I did get to see Dave at his NBC original studio with Larry Budmelmin , Chris Elliot making his usual appearance out of the studio audience staircase, Paul Schaffer band along with Arnold . Not a bad night all in all ;))
come on , don't bullshit me
YeH right and I'm an astronaut watching this on 4G in space
@Top Fitness hey that's not nice 😕
Is this around the time he was banging his fat mexican maid?
I was the guy who denied you the job!
Arnie is a legend. He’s always been a brilliant interviewee and speaker. A great mind for success.
It's funny how his accent and cadence makes you expect dumb BUT if you listen, he's super intelligent.
Why would a foreign accent make you think he's dumb? Don't you think that's the problem?
John Bean when I was 8 years old I told my teacher I wanna be like Arnold. My teacher told me he has no brains just muscle... 🤦♂️
only americans think that because america is a monolingual society.
@@slipknoterman It's not just any foreign accent, it's specific accents. We are raised through media and social inaccuracies that certain accents belong to a certain intelligence or characteristic. I'm not saying that I believe it...I'm saying in this country, we categorize accents. French accent is supposedly romantic...German accents are aggressive...and so on.
@@tgerard3860 Way too true.
Good to hear him admit he juiced. EVERYONE else in similar positions deny it, good for you Mr. Schwarzenegger
and everyone is still harassing him about it haahah, some people like to be lied too i guess
He admitted it, but lied about it having almost no effect.
Yes, Dave often felt insuperior to those of his guests that were much smarter and more successful than he was.
INFERIOR IS THE WORD YOU WERE LOOKING FOR
He did nothing at 5:23

As a language learner, I must say the efford he put in learning the language is tremendous. You have no idea. He has just conquered the USA. Unbelievable. The unimaginable career.
oh brother, dude. Settle down. My wife mastered the English language and speaks better. Relax. Stop worshipping a celebrity.

This man is the AMERICAN DREAM
It's easy to learn a language when you live in a country that uses it mainly.
It just becomes your own main language. I watched van damme trying to record an advert in France, and he actually struggled with his own native language. Forgot words... or how to put them together properly.
No show biz talk, only true to the heart answers, legend don't change.
Ya his honestys sooooo refreshing and i love that he tells it how it is. Steroids are all in your mind. Completely psychological. T R U T H T E L L E R
The guy he dropped in the scene from the movie Commando was David Patrick Kelly from "The Warriors".
Commando was a fun film for sure, a classic 80s action flick.
Arnie had fun banging Rae dawn Chong every day...
I love the bit immediately after this clip where he drives the car away and there's not a scratch on it.
@@Nickbaldeagle02 After dropping Sully, haha.
I love how Arnold always acknowledges the gift of coming to America.
Arnold is an inspiration.
Probably why my feminist professor hated him.
Yeah, it was a great movie, wasn't it? ;)
He didn't come over demanding free welfare and telling everyone how racist we are.

@@tomiasthexder7673 Yes. He said he was willing to put the work in everything regardless of how hard it was. Hats off to him.
1976-1986 was paradise! 1985 was a major peak for me personally.
Arnold will always be a great man for me...he achieved so many things just by fighting for it and never give up...he realy worked his ass off to get where he is now
Action heroes like Arnold were a massive part of the Action movie era of the 80s and 90s.
@josh peters - Don't be so crude, Dwayne is OK as an actor and person ! -
@@ChrisMisc1 - Yes Dwayne is OK !
Absolutely amazing! Arnold's personality is as strong as his body. No wonder he became a supersatar (my favorite actor of all time) and the governor of California
I truly LOVE this guy🙏🏻♥️
My good physical condition at 51 is actually because of his influence at an early age..
I saw Conan at the cinema when i was 13(1981) and that opened my eyes.
ARNOLD FOREVER 🙏🏻♥️🇱🇺
Conan? This is Letterman, not Conan
🤨🤔
😉
one of the few celebrites who achieved legend status in 2 fields, bodybuilding and acting. total icon
...AND in Politics as Governor of California !
I'm 44... Me and every other kid my age grew up idolizing this man. There will never, ever be another. He's the man. And he would have been an incredible US President if our laws allowed it. I get why our laws don't allow it, but he'd have been a great exception to make.
I'm 51. It was Bruce Lee.
I've taught martial arts for 32 years now. Thanks Bruce!
And JCVD too.
Commando isn’t a violent movie at all. Arnold only killed 81 guys in this movie!
Not violent. Action-packed!
Well none of the goons could shoot him because his shirt was off, you know -rules of engagement in warfare.
Action packed
LoL!!!
Yes . But there were all bad guys.
One of the toughest interviews
One the best examples of the confidence exhibition
Tough interview?! DL is a moron 😂
You got to give it to Arnold, he kept cool and calm during the whole interview even when dave was teasing him about his steroid use.
Yes, Arnold is very patient with very stupid people !
That’s 100% correct Jason, Arnie had to be very patient with an insect 🕷️ he didn’t wish to squash that impertinent flying bug.
Ferrigno
Well, that's jealously for ya. Stallone had his own successes anyway & hardly an Action HERO.
"Oversized ambition"! No comprende tbh
Cobra's the closest to any Arnie 'action flick'! Top film, but Arnold in many more memorable 1's.
you just have to admire this guy for his vision in life and seeing it through. determined to be the best. salute to a living legend!
Well said.
Bs. He is arrogant bully because he has muscles. Determined to bully everybody.
This dude is simply a badass....the way he handled Dave is just how ya had to handle him...push back hard when needed, keep control, good sparring, gain respect.
I am so impressed the way he delivered the answers quite swiftly and in honest and confident way
Beka Machurishvili They estimate Arnold’s IQ is upper 130’s range, that really shows, if he was mediocre Letterman would play with him like a mouse, but he just try to keep his pace. Don’t get me wrong Letterman’s IQ is no less, but it is very rare for a bodybuilder to be that smart.
It's amazing how few people have watched Part 1 of this appearance on this channel, where Dave and Arnold do the coat gag they reference here.
Amazing man, his greatest film is predator. He has been such a huge success in life, film industry, business, politics and bodybuilding!!!. Incredible, most people wouldn't achieve 1/5 of what he has done.
Then he sells out and pumps communism. So disappointing
More like 1/20 !
He's soooooo smoooooth about everything.
I always watched this talk show when I was younger, so thank you for uploading this.
Best interview ever!
SO MUCH CHARISMA!!

Damn ! He’s overflowing with all the good qualities that a gentleman should have!
Loved the little glimpse of backstage, all the 80s outfits 😂 Arnold's wife was a doll
Arnold delivery with his honesty is great. Admits to juicing like it’s nothing and nobody cares
Adam is the coolest so freaking refreshing. I had no idea he admitted abusing test so early on in his career. Now if everyone else who is on the gear, ahem THE ROCK, would man up and confess.
VHS Copy of Seinfeld
Because that would hurt his image and its probably too late now, if he came foward now everybody would be asking why he waited that long lol
I think people don’t admit because they don’t want to promote it and encourage others to do the same.
Ya his honestys sooooo refreshing and i love that he tells it how it is. Steroids are all in your mind. Completely psychological. T R U T H T E L L E R
His answer with the dead pan delivery was really witty, especially with the build up before that it contradicts the health aspect of the sport. But the descriptions about the effects of steroids... He knew better at the time so you need to address that he was straight up lying
The guy is like 71 and looking fantastic.. he's the only older actor I know to not only still look relativly big.. but MAINTAIN his thickness physicality wise. Thats hard to do I heard.. when u get into your 60's +. Thats amazing. Also I can't wait for the new Terminator Film !
TRT.....
He was so cool when I was a kid. He didn't have to act very well, he just had to show up and be Arnold.
Magical year, magical period in time, magical interview and you got to love Arnold. We have to brng back the 80s man
"The positive effect of steroids is psychological" -Arnold Schwarzenegger 1985. At least he was honest about using them though
I can't believe no is even talk about this like he is just lying
I Love Arnold, his book "Total Recall" is amazing, he talks about meeting Maria, the entire Kennedy family, he didn't hold anything back, what a Life very well lived.

Truest statement ever. "All of these things would not have happened had I not came to America"
However - I would say, he would have achieved great things too - if he had stayed in Europe !
Such a sweet smile, this guy is so boastful and humble at the same time. Legend.
The gaps in their teeth were simply legendary.

Somewhere Mildred Baena is watching and sighing as she fantasizes about Arnie. She then shakes her head at the silliness of her thoughts and goes back to cleaning.
🙋🏻♂️ God bless America, God bless Arnold Swarzkenager, God bless the audience. Tks for the video✔️
"What'd you do with Sully?"
"I let him go" lol
Without the monstrous body (at the time, not compared to modern bodybuilders) he wouldn't have been able to talk like this, he would have been booed at
Yes you gotta trust yourself and have big self confidence, but you're never supposed to say it aloud like that. Don't try to copy his social behavior, if you want people to like you. It only worked because he was 7 times Mr. Olympia, and famous for these "unstoppable man" roles
Man, Arnold is my hero of childhood. I grew up with his movies.
"It's the best thing that ever happened to the family" 😊
"Do you need to explain the scene or is it all gunfire?" Lmao
When this was filmed in 1985, Arnold literally had a perfect life. Perfect in every single sense. A life to be envious of really.
Absolute legend in every sense of the word.
The humour with Arnold is something else 😍🤣
I get recommended this video every year. And every year I click and watch it
Good on you Arnold came to America with a gym bag and that's it.. A great example a self determination
He was brought here with plenty of sponsorship.
Dave: That's a real interesting story for a couple of reasons.
Arnold: Which are?
lol
It was the first movie on VHS what I saw in 1987 in USSR and it was great. Thanks for this episode!
Letterman: "Did you ever use steroids?"
Arnie: "Oh sure, yeah."
You've gotta hand it to him, it took brass balls to admit that like it was nothing. On national television.
He admitted to taking them, but that they had no effect
@ There was not much study dedicated to the effects of steroids in bodybuilding then.
Zac Muturi body builders have been using steroids since the 1920s. Arnold ushered in the era of massive use of steroids and other growth enhancing drugs.
I really miss the old Arnold.
