Engine
- E3.36 spark plug gap .035
- Compression @ 150psi
Valves and timing
- Intake clearance was set very tight. I couldnt fit a .0015 feeler in. Set to .011
- Exhaust side is at .006. Not making excessive noise. Need to remove the valve cover to set the lash since I dont have a tool to get at it
from the inspection port. Would
also like to inspect the cam and figure out if its aftermarket.
- Possible different springs were used, they are blue in color..
- Timing at TDC seems as if the cam sprocket is a bit advanced. Will check again when cover is off
Carburetors/Air intake
- Sprayed starting fluid to check for leaks (none).
- Benched the carb and checked bowl height and set to .15 mm
- Cut 45 degree angle on float stops
- Pressure tested needle valve/seat, good.
- Jetting
- Mains = Left: DJ 155 Right: DJ 160 Starter = 95 Throttle = 80
- Needle clip moved to 2 from 5 -suspected rich condition after inspecting spark plug
- Found needle washer and spacer arrangement incorrect on both sides (missing washers replaced and arrangement corrected per the
manual)
- Set Left I/A pilot 3 out
- Set Right I/A pilot 2 out
- Conducted clear tube test both sides measure approx 3mm above bowl line and are even
- Snorkel deleted
- Checked K&N for proper seating
Electrical
- Found faulty reverse sensor connector and rerouted to ground
- Tested parking brake switch
- Checked plugs on CDI for proper seating
- Parking brake mechanism has been deleted and appears to be missing a switch, if so need to find
where the wiring..

It’s definitely the parking brake sensor I have a 03 660r and I went crazy trying to figure it out on mine and I ended up cutting the sensor off and twisting the wires together and it ran perfect so I got a new sensor and installed it the right way and it still runs perfect

Lots of slapping noise i would seriously be looking at timing chain for stretching. Far as jetting stock won't work because of air intake and exaust. Mods always call for rejet
So I have a all stock 660r and it has stock jettings and all the switches are good there’s no leak or air leaks or anything but when I’m driving it slow it drives fine when I’m at full throttle it drives fine but when I drive it at cruse around mid throttle it backfires and blows air back out of the carbs
I have a 01 raptor 660r and it has work to the motor it sounds like it's the jets need bigger one
I am going to have to check my valve clearances. Mine wont start unless i have the choke full on and manually release it once it is fully warmed up. It also backfires a ton when I get off the accelerator (decel)
The 01 does not have a reverse rev limiter
I got a 01 that spits and sputter low rpm’s but runs good at high rpm’s
Mine stalls out after riding for so long and it’s always around the high end of the second gear but I can trick the bike to keep running with the kill switch! That’s just after 15 mins of riding and it warmed up for about 15 mins aswell before I drive?
Check your valave adjustment there kind of loud may be out of spec..

Mine did that when the timing chain stretched. Sounds like yours is rattling
Clutch or parking break sensor unplug them

JETTING!!! Everything changes at higher elevations!
That top plug on the clutch side is the problem it’s missing and will make it sputter and backfire when throttled

I have a raptor 660 that was recently bored over to a 686 now it wont start I had a guy try adjusting the valves For me.. It turns over one slow time then dies out if I bump it bump it bump it it'll turn over again then repeat itself... What could be my problem

auto decompression is not working making you think you have a bad battery
A lot of times people take the parking breaks off cause they make the quads run like shit
I think the pilot jet needs to be lowered to the next size down and the main should be increased to the next size up. That parking break issue is notorious on these. So so many problems

Sounds like the rev limiter but how does it run when you use choke? Any difference? Mine is doing the exact same thing and I was suspecting it was jetting and not a limiter. But it could be a limiter now that I think about it. Did you ever figure it out?
Yes, check my other videos. I ended up jetting down. It's not hitting the rev limiter because it starts to limit revs well before you're at WOT.

@@zacharyhuckaby274 yea it was the jetting, check my other videos on it. I recommend going through the entire fuel system and making sure its good. Also keep in mind that it will not let you rev too high when not in gear. Good luck!

Best 1000 u ever spent on a Yamaha.... 2001 had revers gear issues other then that it's a great atv I have 2 raptors.... u can easy flip for 2500 or 2000 and u know what your doing soo if u like it keep it
Yeah I sold it for 2k. Valves were out pretty bad so I adjusted them and the noise calmed down.

Needles up is more fuel the switch on the switch on the handle bars that have the bullet style connectors plug them into each other the other handle bar switch just unplug it and tape it off to keep water from getting into the main harness

I have an 01 686 and i just put a new carb on mine. Unfortunately they werent the same size jets but i took em off my old one. It runs 90% now. 2 turns on the left and 3 on right BUT it needs a lil more tweaking. Still hits 80mph but i know there's more. Originally it would idol and run until i hit mid range rpm. It was a tank after spittin and sputterin to 50mph then it would just pull. Its better now but still needs maybe half a turn here or there. I dunno. Its a beast but. Alot of wiring issues, new solenoid and battery, starter. My cousins raptor is the SAME way with wiring. I gotta rip that all apart tomorrow smh. Good luck tho.
Yeah that china carb is gine but I think it may require different jets/settings.. I put the mikuni back in and brought it back to stock to get it tuned back in.
Is that why I backfire new carb use old jets
I have a raptor 350 piped jetted cdi rev box air filter etc and it is now doing that exact same thing. Once it cooled down i swapped the parking brake wires and it didn't make a difference I checked cdi box wires and after awhile It seemed to finally rev out fine. This was yday around 3pm and then last night around 9 I went to move it and it started bucking again! Any ideas? P.s I have 155 main jet and put 2 spacers on needle clip all of which ran fine for over a week or 2 before this started to happen
Sorry for the late reply.. did you figure it out? If how you have it setup with the mods and jetting and you said it ran fine and would rev out... tells me there may be an electrical issue. It's possible moisture is getting in that cdi or something else.. when it comes to electrical I always start with the grounds. Make sure you have good connections to the frame.. intermittent electrical issues can be a real pain!!
@@cannedham3774 yes actually I did and come to find out my brand new dyna fs ignition went bad. Put my stock one back on and runs fine again

Hi, sorry for the late response.. those are jet sizes. My other videos on this show how I fixed it. I just needed to jet down(lean) to get it right.

What fixed you’re problem because when I have mine in neutral it revs good but when I’m driving it and full throttle it starts to sputter
Mine dose same thing but I’m like second gear up at full throttle
Shift down to first gear let off clutch to give it gas she starts bogging down bad have to keep my hand in clutch for it to idle. But I’m neutral it revs and takes the gas. Just when I shift down to first starts bogging when I’m trying to go. Also reverse light blinking

I have a 03 raptor 660 and it starts and idles fine but when I hit half or full throttle mine wants to back fire and pop, yours holds will it a lot better mine wants to die soon I smash the throttle but will idle fine. Do you have any ideas?
Probobly jetting. Every bike I get if theres issues with the carb I always start at stock and adjust from there. Take into account mods like muffler/pipes/airbox.. it's very sensitive to any modifications or even bad seals on the airbox.. exhaust leaks.. hopefully this gives some insight. Good luck !
Check ur valves might be out of speck that help my problem with mine

Jose Rojas was yours poping and backfiring when you give it any type of throttle? I put i new carb on and it sat for about 2 years I didn’t ride it and now just wants to act all funny when I try to rev or ride it
BoBo’s Bikes mine was piping and back firing when I will go half to full throttle and it was the valave to tight
What ended up fixing this. I just picked one up for cheap. Runs but when I come onto it in 2nd it backfires.

I have a 2003 raptor 660r, i have to hold the electric start for like 30 seconds for it to start and when it does it feels like it doesn't ride good. I can slightly give it throttle but if I don't full throttle it almost the whole time it tries to die like its flooding or something... Its also shooting out some blackish smoke, nothing crazy yet but something noticeable. Hoping my air/fuel screw just needs adjusted or jets need swapped. I have a 2 brothers exauhst and that's about it, what should I do?
Hey not sure if you solved this nor not but if its flooded maybe check the bowls and make sure the floats are set properly. To test, try turning the fuel off and start it.. see how it responds.. you can tell right away if it is a rich or lean issue by doing that. Just dont throttle too much with the fuel off because as the fuel depletes in the carbs you are creating a lean condition! Good luck !

@@devingallagher5674 my valves needed to be adjusted, I adjusted those and it started up right away. It may be difficult for you at first but watch a few videos online, make sure you get the motor at top dead center when you adjust the valves. Also measure the gap between each one before you adjust them so you can tell what they are at first

I have a 660 and if I try to go over 55 on it like it want to stall don’t know the problem?
Gotta take a look at the mods on it and if its stock make sure there are no air leaks.. sounds like you might need to go through it like I did.. start at stock settings and adjust from there! If there are mods on it then pickup a few jet sizes higher and lower.. test it .. adjust .. test.. keep track of what you change good luck !
I have a problem where my reverse light comes on when riding it wide open an shuts down but idles good when stopped but hard to take off. it has new carb,cockpit an a few other things would u know what's causing that?
Assuming at WOT it's only an indication issue or that would be catastrophic.. In this case you should check the wiring, start by putting it in neutral with the engine off butwith the key on and see what it does when you place the shifter in reverse. If ok then go back to neutral and start wiggling wires, I'm thinking you have a possible connection issue

It’s the reverse rev limiter. It is the green wire with white stripe. Looking at your cdi, cut it with enough lead to ground it to the negative side of your battery and your problem will go away
My 2005 660r keeps stalling when it’s idling, and when I’m driving it and slow down to low gear it shuts off. Any explanation you can think of?

FIB Life just have a aftermarket pipe on it, I just bought it off of a friend it’s been sitting for a few years. Just put a new carburetor in.

Your pilot jet is the issue. Stock they should be about 2 and 1/2 turns out to 3 turns out. Pull your plugs out and learn how to read them. Chocolate brown plugs are right on the money. Black plugs are to rich. White plugs are too lean. If you can't figure it out. Buy a hand pump pressure tester and see if your carb will hold pressure when sealed. You may have leaking O_rings around the needle and seat Even if it's new. Check the float measurement. It should be 13 millimeters. With just a pipe. You should get a dyno jet stage 2 jet kit and follow the instructions. Your carb might be new but it's not set up from the factory.
What do u mean u had to jet down? What is jet down
"jet down" = smaller jet hole diameter= lower jet number = LEAN
@@cannedham3774 I ended up setting my needles full rich I guess it was starving coming off idle. Yours was running rough off of idle because it was too rich?
