- Dirtbike not cranking over when the electric start button is pushed?
Think you may have a faulty starter relay?
This video describes how to test and confirm if the starter relay is faulty, and how to replace it. The featured motorbike is a 2007 Yamaha TTR230, however, similar methods could be applied to other small engines with electric start. This bike hadn't been started for around 12 months, and among other issues, it had a faulty starter relay. Replacement non-genuine starter relay cost approximately $40AUD.

Extremely useful and well done video for those of us that own this bike. Thanks.
Thanks, changing mine this week because of your video??
Thank you for making this video!
Cheers from England!
Wow, fantastic vid mate, straight to the point and great filming. Cheers
thanks was exactly my problem.
Great video. Well done and informative. It helped fix my problem.
Glad it helped!
Thank you I have a ttr90 and I’m going to order a new one
thanks very helpful
thank you! my tw200 wont start and I think its the relay. Will be trying this today.
Shorted my bike out when break light wire melted on exhaust . Cooked the starter relay so just ordered another one hopefully this works sweet
Thank you for this. My starter is fine, but my cables are all old and crappy. I wasn't sure what to remove and replace or how.
Helpful, my motorbike problem is looking like that
Glad it helped Adrian. Good luck with the repair.
Love the video, thanks for a great tutorial! I am stumped though, I have the clicking when hitting ignition & when i bridged the 2 connectors on the relay it aaaaalmost turned over.
New relay installed and still click click.
Hoping maybe I just killed battery trying to start it a bunch but who knows😂 If anyone has suggestions they're greatly appreciated
Next step would definitely be to charge battery and see how you go. Sounds like you may have had a dodgy relay and possibly flat battery. If you charge battery and are still getting the 'click click' then also try bridge the new relay and see if it turns over. Good luck 👍
Did you check to see if the wire from the start button was working before you tried the relay? If so which colour wire was hot when the button was pushed?
No I didn't check unfortunately. I was getting audible clicking from relay when start button was pressed so was confident that side of things was working.
@@fortheloveofvideo6306 do you know what could be at fault if the bike isn't making the click, even after replacing starter relay
Edit: fixed error caused by autocorrect
@@lukasd6263 first thing I'd confirm is that your battery is well charged and battery terminals are clean and connected properly, as well as the wires going to the starter relay (make sure cables and connectors are seated/connected properly). If there's no click and the engines not turning over then it's most likely your battery, starter relay or possible the switching circuit to activate the the relay ie. the starter button and associated connections. Does the engine turn over if you bypass (short out) the starter relay?
@@fortheloveofvideo6306 yes the starter motor will turn when bypassing the starter relay, we have previously tested wires coming from starter button but will have to double check.
Mine had the same issues as yours and started. With scissors but the button does nothing after replacing the solenoid and the red light on the on off switch doesn’t come on
Wiring may be incorrect perhaps? Or something left disconnected? Quite often faults will lie where ever we have been ie. very easy to accidentally induce faults.
Hey quick question I have a ttr 225 and I bought a brand new battery and everyone I click it it makes a click
Do you mean it makes a click when you try to start it? If that's the case you may have the same problem as shown in this video, assuming the battery has enough charge. Bypassing the starter relay will confirm if the starter relay is faulty.
I did this but I still have the same problem.
Why won’t my bike receive power I got a new batter and even it won’t send power to the key on/off switch
Could be a number of things, I'd be checking fuses or any isolation switches to start with. Check that you're getting voltage at the key switch too as it could be a faulty key switch.
I got a new one and it still clicks. Before it would click rapidly and now it just does one click
You ever get it fixed
When i do that it still doesn’t do anything. Battery is good so im not sure where to go from there.
If 12V is getting to your starter motor and it's still not turning over I'd say your starter motor could be the problem.
When i shorted those wires it just turned the bike off
Suspect your battery might be shot if electrics/ignition died when you tried to crank starter by shorting out starter relay.
