I've been looking to buy a G85 for the past few months to kickstart videography as a hobby and for some professional work. Glad to see other people still seeing it as a cost effective value add to their work as well.
Awesome review. I have been used the G85 since so many years for my documentaries, street and travel photo even to some professional project. Packed with good lenses and some light primes you can achieve some great results. Compared to some recent camera it performs well. Fuji XS10 doesn't have weather sealing, most of the apsc don't have stabilization (exclusing expensive XT 4 and 5, sony A6600 has a really bad ibis). Unless you decide to go to a more expensive and bulky gear, the G85 is the best value camera for it's specs.
love my G85, had it for years. Grabbed it just yesterday after not touching it for almost 6 months to capture some great wildlife images. A trusty tool!
Grant! Great Channel Mate! I’ve been watching them as you release them and am so grateful for your info. I’ve been a long time MFT shooter from the G5-GH2-GF3-PL7-Em10ii, and now My kit is the G85 + GX85 with the Rok12/2.0 , PanL25/1.4, Pan42.5/1.7, Pan12-60Kit, Pan20/1.7, Pan45-150zoom, and one Oly, the 17/1.8…. And a Nikon 7100, Fuji XS10, XT30 and XE1, plus some Rebels and P&S cameras that I buy-shoot-sell … so I’m STACKED… I say that because your philosophy of keeping only what you’re shooting with is right there for me. I’m selling off everything I can now to be exactly that way too. Here in Miami, my clients consist of mostly Daytime Event Photos and Personal street and beachscape stuff…So each Lumix and Each Fuji fit me perfectly. -- I was all-in on selling everything and getting a G9 and GH5ii as the only two cameras in my bag, when I came upon your YT channel. The way you share everything in the most honest, least scripted/bs way possible is phenomenal. I’m so excited you’re getting a G85 too! You’ve restored my hope/faith in mine and I’ve taken it off the market today to give it a second chance. I think I still need the G9 to give me the features/reliability in the field, but I’m not giving up on the G85 just yet. I’m looking forward to hearing your opinion on where the G85 ranks in terms of your history with the G7 and the GX8…I keep thinking of selling the G85 for like 500 USD and grabbing a G7 for 300 USD and then putting that extra 200 toward a G9 while keeping my GX85 for quick work. I hope you do a video on the G85 once you’ve had a chance to use it and maybe compare it to the other MFT models in its price point. I’m shooting my first wedding in December, and while I have full faith in my Fuji setup for that, I’d love to have a MFT kit I can feel confident about not missing the shot due to the paltry AF mine have. I hear wondrous things about The G9….oh before I forget, have you ever thought about interspersing some photos taken by the camera(s) you’re currently talking about, that would be cool to have little melodic vignettes that give a 15-20 sec break every now and then from the monologue. Just a thought. I’m sure you might do just that in your upcoming street photos. Anyway, I’ve gone on long enough. Love the channel, thank you! Keep up the great work and pace I love seeing new video alerts on a regular basis. I need to start posting more frequently on my channel given the tremendous inspiration from yours. Well. Cheers! Looking forward to the next video already!
Hey man :) Wow - Thank you so much for your kind words and tuning into my videos :) Id love to go to Miami someday - We actually have a little Miami here on the Gold Coast, I actually did a job down there the other day LOL - Looks like you have got a really good photography kit and some good options! Yes looking forward to getting the G85 it will tick many boxes in all aspects of my work :) Yeah I have to put more breaks in my videos with some solid B-Roll and Photo examples, good idea... I guess its all a big adventure this UA-cam thing ... Many thanks again and all the best with your photography - Chat Soon :)
I mainly do video but getting back into photography and I'm a G85 and G9 user myself. Used to be Sony, but got tired of overheating and record limits. Started with the G85 because of no overheating, great ibis and no record limits. Since I wanted to get back into photography I added the G9, High Res mode is awesome and the video updates that Panansonic added was fabulous, and the reason why I added it to my kit. I LOVE everything about both of these cameras, as G85 is a great small walk around camera when I need to go very compact and both together pair up great for video when needed. The only grip I have about the G9 is that it doesn't have constant record ability, but for studio settings it's not an issue.
I seriously considered one of these over christmas. Same deal as you stated at JB HiFi but was down to AU$850. I found a crazy second hand deal though for a GH5 along with a 25mm prime chucked, 2 sd cards, a bag and a light for AU$800. Looks basically brand new too and was used as a B cam for years by a Pro. But those deals aren't going to come up all the time so if anyone is looking for the best deal for the G85 it's AU$850 and I would highly recommend that.
Nice camera! My personal kit. G85 and 4 lenses (for now) 12-60 - 25mm 1.7 - 30 mm 2.8 macro - 45 to 150 (one of my favorite lenses) and will add more lenses to this kit, such a the Leica 9mm, Leica 42.5 and the 100-400 and a whole collection of baby lens velvet series.
My wife got the same kit (with both lenses) for her own work, managed to find for $999 last week. A few cheap second hand telephoto lenses later and she's got a capable, cheap setup for most circumstances.
She mostly does indoor work for dance studios and the like, and was looking for a cheap little camera to take outdoors and try out some wildlife photography without risking expensive equipment. I'm not a photographer myself but it seems capable for the size and cost

Hello, Grant. At first, I'd like to thank you for your great videos and reviews. At second, I consider you as an expert, so I have one question. I have Lumix G85, American model, obviously. I live in Serbia, and I shoot in 50Hz region. In my camera, there are only 24. 30 and 60fps settings, and as I know, no shutter angle setting, which give me serious flickering issue under artificial light. Is there some solution for that? Can I apply Australian or Hong Kong firmware on my camera? Will I get the variety of settings of that region's camera, or will I ruin the camera? Greetings.
Just subscribed. ❤ Just wondering, do you capture 4K video with the g85? I hear it only does 30fps and can’t do 24fps or 23.98fps or whatever that last one is. Do you just use the 24fps in 1080p on the g85?
Hey! Just a quick question, I'm struggling between G85 and G9, I'm also located in Brissy but G9's are almost the price of GH5's. Im starting my filmmaking slowly and want a nice decent camera. I'm more into shooting music videos and stuff. Do you reckon that G85 would do the job or it's worth to wait and save a bit more bucks to grab the G9? Great vid by the way, makes me lean more towards the G85 but there's just a confusion I cant get off my head between the G9.

Tossed around the idea of buying another g95 missed it since I sold it. I’ve tried a lot of brands and the Panasonic experience with those menus is hard to beat.
I absolutely love my G95. Came with the very capable kit lens. I bought a Lumix 25mm 1.7 and a sigma 1.4 16mm. I have found that I need nothing else to produce some amazing short films. Bought the camera and kit lens for $478.00 US 4 years ago on a great sale. You'll have to pry my set up out of my cold dead hands.
G'day Grant - I am currently looking at buying a micro 4/3 camera cheap after using canon eos dslrs for the last few years making short films with my son. Their seems to be a big micro 4/3 following mainly relating to panasonic/lumix and Olympus cameras and a big market for micro 4/3 lenses. I stumbled across your video as I wanted a review on G85 and have a bid on a camera on ebay and hope to pick up the camera (body only) cheap. What I like about the G85 is the great video stabilisation as well as as having a mic in and also the battery location and ports are well placed and does not require you to unmount the camera from a tripod etc. anyway great vid - cheers
Thanks for this video. I love my gx85. I use it as a stills everyday camera in combination with my bmpcc4k. Micro 4/3 hopefully still has some life left in the next few years
Another great video Grant. I got very lucky picking up a very lightly used G85 with 25mm 1.7 for $400 AUD in 2020. Since owning it I've come to really appreciate how nice of a camera it is. It certainly is that type of camera that ticks a lot of boxes/use cases and I hope it serves you well.
I found a G81 (Switzerland spec) on a local e-listing for ~US$340, including the OEM battery extension/grip, Vario f3.5-5.6 / 12-60mm kit lens, and premium strap. It had under 500 shutter cycles and not one scratch. Around the same time, maybe 3 months later...I took a walk instead of a work lunch and stopped by a small camera store a block from my office, for my very first visit. They had a GX-9 with under 600 shutter count and a pancake kit zoom...for the same price. Immediately, bought that one too. Both are excellent camera's. Luv'em. At this stage...I have enough M4/3 lenses, plus plenty of M4/3 adapters and FR's for a large collection of vintage glass (30+), to stay with these Lumix bodies for a very long time. The best part about M4/3 is that it seems to have fallen out of favor to FF tech. Fair enough. Just makes my purchases that much sweeter!

Would you recommend for a person who is outside, hiking camping shooting landscapes a good option? Looking at the g9, however it’s a heavy big camera. Almost defeats the smaller Moro four thirds system…
Im not a huge camera guy but need a new Camera for work because I have a marketing company and need photos of golf courses etc and was looking at the G85 because i've seen so many amazing reviews and i've seen the new deal you spoke about at JB for 1k. LoL Yes go QLD :) - Yeah it’s a great deal at the moment - Yes the 12 to 60mm kit lens that the G85 comes with is great and will get a lot of your shots - from landscapes shots of the corse to some details and anything else in between :) But yeah it’s a good little camera - should do you good - Let me know how you go with it? :)

Im not a huge camera guy but need a new Camera for work because I have a marketing company and need photos of golf courses etc and was looking at the G85 because i've seen so many amazing reviews and i've seen the new deal you spoke about at JB for 1k. Currently i have Sony A5000 but its just shocking to me and i'm going to sell it. Do you think this G85 would do the job with the lenses they provide? Also glad to see another QLD'r haha :)
The G95 is selling at the same price as the G85, both comes with kit lens. Which one should we buy?
I guess the G95 if it’s at a good price :)
Bought a second one yesterday. Love that camera.
Awesome stuff :)
I am looking to get into film making for high school credit as well as a hobby and for UA-cam. I make all sorts of videos and really hope that this camera will work for what I need!
The G85 is a perfect camera to start out with! Perfect for what you want to do :)
Just wondering: Why the giant microphone and wind screen?? Is it active, or just a prop?
It's My Audio Mic
even I bought one... its fantastic
Hi, where did you buy it from?
Camera House - Loganholme, QLD Australia
What is your opinion about Gx85 + panasonic 10-25mm and 25-50mm F1.7 lens ?
If I could afford it I would get both of those lenses :) Just awesome!!! However on the smaller GX85 body it could be a hard kit to balance :)
@@grantrobertdavies thanks for your thoughts. If we flip the coin then for 3k it goes towards FF.
What is the lens that stays on the one for your UA-cam videos in the office you are using right now during this video?
Panasonic Leica 12mm f/1.4
@@grantrobertdavies Wow little outside my budget will the 14-45mm that I got with cammers work? Sorry new to this. That lens you mentioned is 1300 dollars on Amazon.
@@thestreamreader Yeah, for sure :) with the right lighting
Is G85 good for portrait/ people Photography?
Yes indeed - pair it up with a 25mm or 42.5mm lens - Awesome portrait combo :)

Thank you much for your reply. 👍
I'd rather get OM system OM-5, is much better and smaller than GX 80 and better sealed against dust and rain.
Harald.
Yeah - good points :)
Or even a used em5iii with some lenses. Still better weather sealing than the g80/81/85 but Lacking the grip
I’ve used my G85 in Iceland in very cold temperatures, and behind soaking waterfalls. No issues with the weather sealing.

Y didn't you go for a g95 ,little brother to the g9...20mp.😉
My thoughts as well. I wish I got the g95 when I got my g85
Yes - The G95 was on my radar - But it all come down to my Budget and Value that this particular kit gives me for my needs right now :) But yeah the G95 is a good option too :)
Why not a used gx80 or gx9 and some lenses?
@@EstelonAgarwaen Good point :) But I don’t really like that build of camera :) I prefer the deeper grip style of cameras with the flippy screen :)
@@grantrobertdavies makes sense. I like my em1ii. But as a small everyday camera the gx80 is among the best.
Lemme make you cry a bit, G9 during black friday 2022, 800 bucks.
Good Stuff
