Description: A couple of days ago, I saw a video from Wealthy Expat, where he listed all the reasons one should move to Serbia. Most of the information in the video was false, and in this one I explain all the wrongs in his video from paying taxes in Serbia, buying property, traveling with a Serbian passport, and much more.

I find smaller Serbian towns to be in general much friendlier than Belgrade, and closer to the stereotypes this guy was describing. Where I live, I already know the people I deal with and they know me, the shop clerk lives in my neighborhood, so does that lady from the court and the police officer, etc. I greet all the neighbors every day, they can invite me for a coffee or give me a ride to the town center. Even though my Serbian is still almost as bad as their English.
When in Pancevo people were reporting they'd have to make an online appointment with the officer 2 months in advance, in my town I would just walk to a police station sometime around noon, and if the guy wasn't busy elsewhere or on leave, he'd just receive me immediately and issue the papers right away, joking and commenting all the while.
Dunno about the dating scene, but everyone I meet say I should get married soon, lol (no young single women among them, unfortunately). Pretty sure I could approach someone at a kafana or whatever, but being only able to communicate on the level of: "You pretty. Gronk like pretty." makes dating and especially starting relationships a bit problematic.
Taxes are NOT low, and prices as well, except for real estate and maybe services. However, I bought a nice house with some land for 35k euros, and now in the process of renovating it (mostly on my own, so it's taking ages). Great neighborhood, wonderful neighbors, lots of green, children playing all over the place, walking distance from the town center... Could've done even better and gotten an amazing mountain view from the terrace, if not for the restrictions to buy land for foreigners.
I'm investing in Belgrade real estate, and there are good deals to be found there too, but certainly not for a foreigner who just came into the country and doesn't know anything. Mostly deals where the documents are not ideal, that definitely require a good lawyer.

While crossing the border from Montenegro into Serbia, I encountered distressing treatment from Serbian customs officers. Despite being the only one at the checkpoint on a sweltering August day, they insisted I purchase transit car insurance, threatening to send me back to Montenegro if I refused. To deter me from questioning their demands, they meticulously inspected all my luggage, even disassembling my computer. The situation escalated when they nearly confiscated my valuable Maffel plunge saw due to lacking a physical receipt.
Throughout the ordeal, the chief officer displayed unprofessionalism, repeatedly expressing disdain for the EU. This candid hostility from an official figure was deeply unsettling. Consequently, I resolved never to return to Serbia and refrained from exploring the country further. While acknowledging that there are undoubtedly kind-hearted Serbians, the pervasive attitude problem among authorities left a lasting impression of negativity.

In my opinion, as I was born in Serbia(Yugoslavia in fact) and living abroad in last 25 years , if you have money then come and enjoy the life in Serbia.Relativly cheap.Good people.Belgrade is great city.lots of cultural events .great pubs for mingling not to mantion food.In generally city has far more to offer then the rest of ex Yu republics if not whole Balkan. Good position and easily reach to any part of Europe...
great countryside and historical monuments (that Serbian government doesn't care enough to protect.)
But if you are on limit budget then think twice as you will live as an ordinary Serb...
Serbia is not country for poor people.
No good social security no oportunity for educated young people.jobs oportunity is not great. There are coruption and custom of getting jobs through connections or political orientation.Hospitals are in bad condition.Government doesnt encourage economy in right way .
Regardless all above I will still choose Serbia over others as i am born there and i like living in place where people dont judge you by nationality, skin color or religion. In generally Serbs are still friendly and optimistic regardless all odds and hard times that country had in last 35 years or so❤..

The sales tax (VAT) in all of Eastern Europe is high, because it is easier to collect for the state than the income tax, where people do all sort of tricks to avoid it. Usually the people only pay income tax for their official day job and do everything else on the side.
The same is true for gasoline tax. It is easier to collect, since basically all gasoline comes out of one raffinery (maybe not one, but very few), which very often is even a state owned company. So they can track fuel trucks from the raffinery to the gas station.
All the other taxes are very difficult to collect for the state and with some the administrative effort to collect them is even higher than the revenue created.

They figured out they can do it so they did it. You can always tell them no and say it is a used item and for personal use.
Example, I got Hugo Boss underwear set, with boxers and socks that cost more than 100 euros. You wanna tax that also?
Last time I was in Bosnia the lady wanted me to pay a tax for a laptop computer. I said no.
"Ohhh we will have a problem"
I replied " No honey, you will have a problem and a big one".
The guy that was with me said just give her a few euros for a drink or something or lets give her a couple of cold redbulls..she warmed up to that proposal but then I said to him (while she is standing right behind me) "I am not giving this corrupt woman anything, if she wanted a drink or a few euros of mercy she could have asked for it perhaps then I would give her and not on some made up tax".
She got offended and called her boss, supervisor or whoever the fuck that moron was, so he came and again with the tax...
      So a normal reply is
"This is a personal item, for personal use and it is declared by me as such. Such items are not to be taxed. The worst you can do is write a certificate with a serial number of the device, give me one and keep one so once I leave your lovely country I can show the device leaving with me".
To this he replied ohhh you know the law.. well you could have been nicer to my collegue you know.. Well she shouldnt ask for a bribe, so my dashcam is on and I have it all on record.
After that I got about 20 apologies, ohh it is just a misunderstanding and so on..
Had similar situations on the Serbian border also but there they are more direct to me (since I am Serbian) and sometimes they would just wave me through after I show my passport but sometimes the guy would ask directly for a few euros for drinks.
When they ask directly, like.. "Its a cold and a slow night, we dont want to check your bags, you dont want to get out of the car.. how about you give a little tip and you keep driving home and we have some drinks"
I would ask how much (last time this happened) and the reply was 20 euros.
So I reply to the guy ok, you got 2 options.
1.option I give you 20 euros and curse you all the way to my home (some 400km from the border).

I am a woman from Serbia and my husband is from Croatia. We live here in Serbia and take vacations overthere. Serbian women are a hidden treasure and I am not talking about the plastics which you can see in some parts of Belgrade as well as in every world capital. You just have to be on a similar intellectual level, sharing the similar interests..it is not really about the money. Money is important if you want to live as a decent human being, especially if you are starting a family , but if two people live in love and respect for each other everything is possible . I see a huge amount of disrespect towards serbian women and it makes me sad. Women are the same everywhere in the world , you just have to respect them like you respect your sister , friend , mother..I am pleasantly surprised by Albanians , only them and Romanians were non offensive. Respect!

Don't know which times you originate from, but nowadays majority of girls in Serbia openly demand men which are in a very good financial standing and have either appartments in larger cities or luxurious homes in the outskirts, out of several hundred girls me and my friends talked to past few years, they either want this, or they don't want a man at all, period. The bar which was once set to love and respect, is now clearly also including very good financial standing, and it outmatches good looks, yes, if you have more money, even if ugly, girls will be way open towards you in Serbia. This is not some isolated case, it is a trend. And i don't even want to start about the social warriors, feminism and all of the other unimportant things in life, which are very present in Serbia and tainting the once honest and pure connections people were once able to make in the past.

I know there are so many bad sides, corruption, pollution, economy, ... but there is already so much negativity in the talk about Serbia whether its among Serbs or abroad, that some video like that one cannot really be harmful, now this video specifically youre talking about is obviously full of shit, i mean coming to another country because you are looking for a servable wife what insecure man can you be to want that... so yep living in Serbia can suck when you see where your taxes are going and how hard it is to breathe in the winter, but except for that, serbia and the balkan in general has a lot to offer, especially in sumadija or tara!

Originally Hungarian with an American upbringing and been living in the UK for a while. All I can say is that westerners usually have a huge misunderstanding of what it’s like in Eastern Europe but even the Eastern European neighbouring countries are completely foreign to each other and have a very homogeneous population.
I lived in Hungary 1/3 of my life and it’s like a middle ground between the old soviet era and the EU modernisation. The greatest example I can give you is crossing the border from Hungary to Austria which feels like your stepping 20 to 30 years into the future, and then crossing in the opposite direction into Romania which was like going into the past several decades behind. I went to Romania in the mid 2000s and the whole place was under construction being flooded by all the EU money. I imagine it to be the same south of Hungary in the balkan countries several decades behind. Obviously the further west or north you travel the more they look down on you as a pesky peasant.
Meanwhile most people have no idea that compared to the drug and divvy infested UK, most of Eastern Europe is like a utopia.

Romanian Hungarian border crossing was quite shocking in the early 2000s. Now not so much. North - South direction feels rather quite similar. Poland feels like a much better version of Hungary, Slovakia is in between, sometimes better than HU, worse than PL. Serbia especially the northern part is still quite similar to Hungary
Crossing the border from there to Romania feels like you leave the EU even when you enter it lol.

    Slight correction on taxes:
Many expats are freelancers, as a freelancer you can apply for flat rate taxing (pausalno oporezivanje), you pay a flat rate based on the average income in the area your company is registered in (not necessarily where you live) and a few more factors. I pay about 200 USD a month in my 8th year as a freelancer, up to a +-50k USD yearly income (which is quite decent in Serbia).
That being said pretty much everything else sucks at the moment, mostly due to decades of corruption.

I think one has to take into consideration, that international consultants do not recommend such solutions for people who have no money and earn 1500 Euros a month. They usually consult 7-figure (!) income earners. These individuals have the possibility to structure their income and their companies internationally, they do not have a single place for everything, they have different places on earth for their personal residence, their domicile, their companies, their citizenships, their countries of taxation. Furthermore personal preferences and life choices play an important role. A Serbian passport offers great visa free travel opportunities, which EU or US citzens don't have. Vojvodina still offers very affordable land, if you want to live a quiet life outside the cities. These are just 2 random examples. So including Serbia into the whole international concept might make great sense for certain individuals.

I was driving from Belgrade to Timisoara, Romania, and then to Budapest, Hungary. The border crossings were complete nightmares. When entering Romania, my rental car was partly dismantled - they took out all the seats and removed all the wheels. I had to to pay them €50 to install everything again. When exiting the country, they made me wait over 2 hours - no reason given, and I could not exit the car. So not only Serbians may have problems crossing the border. And the people in Timisoara is the rudest ones I've ever encountered, and I've been to around 50 countries. Never going back to that shithole of a country ever again.

Great video! Conclusion, do your own research prior to moving anywhere and not on youtube. One small correction on Kosovo recognition map used in the background being false. There are 4 countries in EU not recognising Kosovo as : Spain, Romania, Slovakia Greece. Some of the countries were marked on the map incorrectly.

People don't realise how much you pay for daily life in eastern europe countries in realtion to the respective wage levels. As a German I was shocked that groceries somehow are just as pricy/cheap and sometimes significally more expensive as/than in Germany although the average income level is significally lower. Also education can be costly. That's why I met a lot of east europeans studying at east German unversities.

If you are good student you will study basicly for free, but if you are bad you will pay a lot, until 20 years ago it free for all but there was many who studied like 20 years because it was free so they did not care how long it would be . So after that they change, so if you give year after year you don't pay but if you fall year you fall in to category call "samofinansirajuci" or basicly you pay for everything

One small fact in this math about economics and taxes.
Do you know what it means for a country to be under economic sanctions for 10 years????
No goods either leave (export) or enter (import) the country. There is no transfer of money, goods, everything stops.....logistics, industry....pure survival.
And after 10 years of economic destruction, everything needs to be built from scratch.
Do you remember the old Yugoslavia? Strong on all issues.
At that time, the strong European economic powers began to seriously fear competition.
And that strong country, Yugoslavia at the time, had a socialist system, while the others had a capitalist one.
In the economy, there has always been and will be one single rule.......in order for someone to have, someone must not have.....in other words, the capitalist has because the workers do not have (normal wages, no working conditions, no benefits , no incentives for work, no conditions)
Now.....can any of you imagine...that Serbia was not under these sanctions?????I don't think so
I can't even imagine being with any other country that was under these sanctions.
Imagine no more exports of BMW, Mercedes, Renault, Porsche, Audi, Fiat, Lufthansa, Air France and so on, the list is endless...??????
Suicide.........Of course, the Serbs themselves are to blame for the situation, because they are genetically stubborn and incoherent and indecisive.....to make the right decision at the national level, rather the Serbs function as individuals, each for himself. ....I'm fine, I really don't care about others.....well ....then it won't be fine for you either

As a tax advisor in Serbia, I have to say that your info on taxes is not really correct. First of all, income tax rate in Serbia is just 10%, tax base lowered for non-taxable amount. There is no tax on pension, healthcare and unemployment, those are social security contributions. The rates for SSC's are also incorrect. Also, everyone pays the same SSC rates in Serbia more or less (total SSC 35,05%). While the total SSC rate is high you do not pay it on full amount in all cases as there is a monthly cap on SSC base (for 2024 it approx. EUR 5500). Capital gain tax is 15% (which is lower than a lot of EU/ western countries). Another important thing about capital gain tax is that in most cases that is the only tax you pay, once the 15% is covered there are no additional taxations and no SSC apply. Regarding annual tax, yes, tax rates are 10% and 15%. But, if you are under 40, you get basically double the non tax threshold and most importantly, capital gain is not taxable under income tax.
However, you fail to understand that if we are talking just about tax on personal income Serbia does infact have lower rates than in the west and EU in general, for example income tax in Poland goes up to 32% if memory serves. So yeah, the statement that Serbia has lower tax rates is correct 😁

Not sure on why should you open an LLC if you work alone.
Me, as a solopreneur i only have to pay taxes that were defined by government (with small increase each year) and the rest of money you keep for yourself.
Also you need to be sure that your earnings are below 5000$ or 6 million dinars through 12 months, otherwise you will be forced to pay added value tax

Just out of curiosity dialect wise where you said the famous quote "Ovaj lik vam prodaje muda za bubrege". To me your R sounded unlike anything I've heard so far, but I've also not had much contact with people from Serbia outside of the Belgrade area.
On the other hand the dialect I'm speaking apparently can't be traced properly to anywhere by people of the same age, who grew up in the Balkans and leant their language skills in school and not directly from their parents while living abroad.

You pay import tax in every country when you buy something from abroad. Recently I've made the mistake to buy a motorcycle helmet from Germany ,because it was cheaper, and I had to pay import tax on it £60 when I got it in UK . Same thing happens in Romania if you buy from outside the EU.
