Thank you for explaining the mix food option. Never thought to look in standing orders for such a setting, but have definitely wanted that setting out of a suspicion it would make barrels less likely to cause cancellation spam.
Started playing DF less than a week ago and your videos have easily been the best resources for learning. Please continue making more, I'm looking forward to learning more about your automated and efficient methods. Do you happen to stream? I'd definitely watch you play.
Absolutely great writing on these videos! Thanks for sharing! One question about zone-only fishing and drinking came up in my latest fort while channeling down through a multi-layer light aquifer (so much better than the old standard aquifer!). I created a water source zone above the collecting water, and a pond zone off the side of a hill for dumping, but I also had a nearby stream. Do you know if gathering water from a water-source zone follows the standing-orders settings to prefer/only collect from zone? Or do dwarves gather water to fill a pond from anywhere, regardless of standing orders? Neither "drink" nor "fish" literally describes gathering water in a bucket, and sometimes there seemed to be more water running down the hill than would have come from my light aquifer tiles, so I wondered if they were collecting from the stream as well. (Unfortunately I didn't catch anyone in the act.)
This is a setting that I had to briefly check myself before doing this video. I tend to not choose embarks where water sources are dangerous. It seems to me like no dwarves will either drink or gather water when set to 'only zones', but I don't have many real gameplay hours with this set. This calls for some proper dwarven science, I suppose.
Sacrifices to Armok, of course! While digging staircases through ice to retrieve a body from atop my waterfall divider, I accidentally dug a staircase into the floor of the divider itself. This allowed water to fall through onto the bridge, washing dwarves into the river below. I've dammed the river and am letting it drain to collect them.
2:00 the only time I fiddle with these settings is if I need something done NOW, eg I just slaughtered a massive siege with 50 beak dogs, please stop moving stones around and haul the meat cuts produced by our dozen new (& temporary) butcheries... 3:00 Hum, I also always leave only farmers to harvest, but for a different reason -- I don't want my smiths to climb all the way to the surface, because they got assigned plump helmet picking. 3:15 Auto-loom is straight-up dangerous; strange moods sometimes require thread, so weaving all of it can get dwarves killed. Auto-collect webs varies; sometimes it might help collect random webs spawned in hallways, sometimes it introduces your dorfs to giant cave spiders. Briefly.
I mess with them fairly actively, though I probably should and just use d>b instead. Speaking of looms, I'm actually considering making dyeing a standard industry in my forts for the sake of dividing what gets auto loomed and what doesn't.
I see your great experience in playing Dwarf Fortress and I like learning advanced things. I watched some letsplays of 2 men in evil regions and they all ended fatally sooner than I'd like. May be you have any accumulated tricks to keep dwarves safe in such places? I can place cage traps everywhere but 'avoid traps' creatures (e.g. werebeasts) in undead state keep immune to them.
I tend to stick with 'project fortresses', so I stick to mundane or savage biomes, rarely evil. However, I can say that some of my methods would probably translate over well, such as quickly starting deep, underground farms. So I won't pretend to be qualified to teach bunkering down amidst evil threats, but I wouldn't be opposed to trying it in the future and use the experience in a video or three.
Kruggsmash did one when he did his very first series called Steel Clutches. His first attempt failed hilariously, but then he figures it out. It's really awesome, and my favorite Krugg videos because it's very raw and uncensored. He starts figuring out his current formula for his videos about halfway through that series. When he starts drawing the dwarves and creatures.
@@Tekkud well for me, what you are doing right now is already top notch! But hey! I'm just a random guy on the internet. Keep up the good work! You are doing fantastic!
I hear you there. I haven't ever bothered to experiment with this option because I haven't ever found a problem that could be solved with more cancelation announcements. I am absolutely interested in why others might increase the announcements though. DF is a big game, everyone is always learning.

And I just finished watching your work order video.
Nice. I scheduled this for midnight because I'm out of town, so it looks like the fates have favored you this day.

6:51 Why is there so much garbage in the river and why is the water so shallow? :D
Thanks for the lessons. I like how short and clear they are.

Auto-loom also messes with the hospital supply in my experience.

@@Tekkud Thank you for the answer. I haven't watched many english DF videos but you have so visual explanations that some words can be skipped.

Are you planning to make a Let's Play?
Not soon, but once I have figured out this whole video making thing I may do something of the sort.

Can we get a lesson on how to get a new mayor? You seem to be an expert on the subject.
A rather long video could be made on this... rather long indeed......
@@Tekkud I have nothing but time for this idea...or a video on general fortress design, that's something I struggle with a lot
Vertical Fortress Design may be next up. Stay tuned.
Thanks for the info! But... I am pretty sure that it was an ... expected accident.
