[SHOT Show 2019] Barrett's Entry into the 7.62 Field: The REC-10

  • Barrett has taken the 5.56x45mm REC7 rifle and upgraded it to a 7.62x51mm package which is now the REC10. The REC10 was a product development of a foreign military solicitation program in which Barrett was successful in acquiring and winning. We don't know what exact country this was, but we should have more information on the blog side of TFB in the future, or at least when we see them being used in the wild.
The REC10 comes with a 16-inch barrel and uses several aftermarket accessories such as buttstocks, pistol grips, and magazines. The magazine release is ambidextrous, as well as a bolt release on the righthand side of the lower receiver.
The rifle is available for the U.S. commercial market right now and will be retailed for $2,995.

After running the REC7 in 6.8 for years and having ran the LWRC REPR & SCAR17, Barrett's build quality is top notch and very accurate. So I'd buy one.

This is the ONLY Barrett medium heavy "battle-carbine" WORTH the $ and I know sev MARSOC and ARSOF who say not just they, but our top tier guys are using these over the CSASS (which some of em already think the HK is too unwieldy as it's just a slightly lighter version of 417C-which is a BRICK of steel..a night mare to go mobile for very long with). These guys run REC10s like the Mk 18 5.56/M4s right now lol...until they get greenlight to use some Grendel uppers for their KAC and Daniels Def ARs on widescale, the REC10 has been a longtime coming(only tier 1 guys have dumped a good amount of MCX IIs in 300BLK and just thrown on Grendel uppers to Geiselle/KAC/BCM type ARs)

Right? I don't want to be the one to say 'any chrome lined barrel not 4150 is junk,' but for 2000-3000$ skimping out with 4140 is kind of a joke. For people who think it doesn't matter- it does. Using a throat erosion gauge, 4140 chrome lined barrels erode significantly faster than 4150. Melonite erodes faster than both.

@@Genesis23OPB not really, I used to have a piston AR in 556 (it was a 516 I ended up selling) and while not an AR I do own an MCX in .300 blk and they get just as dirty as any of my other higher end ARs. The reason you'd want a 556 piston AR or even better, a .300 blk piston AR is because they cycle better with super short barrels, cycle better out of water, run suppressors better, and the chamber doesn't heat up to dangerous levels when ran in full auto. They are also inherently heavier, less accurate, are in no way more reliable than traditional DI outside of the situations listed above, and are usually burden with a bunch of proprietary crap. The problems it has go directly against the reasons you'd buy a .308 in the first place and most of us won't be doing combat drives with these.

    • @Genesis23OPB
      @Genesis23OPB 5 років тому +2

@@frankdamsy9715 if a piston gun gets just as dirty as a DI one, you did something very wrong. of course you have tiny pieces from cardriges in both of their bolthead/chamber sections, but the carbon in a piston gun is cleaned out much easier and faster than in a DI. the added weight, especially in a short stroke design, is barely noticable. also, piston guns being less accurate is nonsense, the SIG 550 has a full length gas piston and is one of the most accurate standart issue rifles on the planet.

That said Barrett has ALWAYS been high on price. Every major rifle producer having a backlog insures high prices. Sales need to slump for a couple of quarters and backlogs need ti clear and then PRICES WILL CRATER. Thanks to the douchebags this will not happen.

Barrett man looks like a nerdy triple h. The fact it's accepted by the us military makes me think it may replace the Sr.-25. Just a thought. If I were th United States military I would go with a hk417, LMT DMR like the British army adopted, can't remember the long l111aa11 or whatever it is, or if you want a DMR the m21 ebr's are doing the job. No need to waste precious funds.
The us army doesn't need to waste money on a new DMR just like it didn't need it's new pistol, the m19? Or as its more commonly known the flawed sig p320. The m9 was fine. Handguns don't win wars.
You should be replacing the m16 with something with more power like a 6.5 creedmoor, 6.8 SPC or even a older calibre like the 6.5 swede or Arisaka, or .280 British. 5.56 needs more power to effectively kill men. And needs to sustain the velocity it has to perforate soft body armour.
The us army should be researching the counterbalance system the Russians have in their new ak's (so full auto is effective again, the system pioneered by the aek-971) as well as a roughly 6.5x45-55mm round. As well as updating soft and hard body armour systems, especially the helmet. Russian SFERA helmets are miles ahead of the PASGT and MICH.
They shouldn't be wasting money on DMR's and replacing the m9 with something worse.
The Chinese got the service rifle and pistol concept right with the 5.8mm QSZ-95 and QSZ-92.
The Iranians stuck with the .308 G3, and use the kh-2002 for troops who need it. Troops who can't be resupplied as often as the standard G3 wielding soldier. .223 allows then to carry more ammo.y
The Russians are coming out with a complete new generation of rifles. (Ak-12/Ak-15) plus others.
The USA are stuck with the 60's m16.
America's 'enemies' have better service rifles than the USA. And their tanks are getting behind. The Abrams is a 80's tank. It's behind the Russian T-14, Chinese type 99, Iranian Zulifiquar-3 and possibly even the DPRK's Pokpung-Ho-2. It's also miles behind the British challenger 2 and German Leopard 2A7. The leopard 2a7's 140mm gun could flatten a m1 and that's not a good thing for the us. Especially when the t-14 has a similar performance gun. It's only a matter of time before the Russians export the t-14 Armarta.
Look at the m1 Abrams performance in Iraq. When Iraqi troops didn't abandon it, it was easily perforated by ied's and rpg-29's (the bane of western tanks) (Which the Russians, Iranians, Koreans, and the Chinese have an equivalent copy in service.)
The us is modernising the wrong areas. What makes the sig p320 better than the m9 in the same way the 5.8mm QSZ-92 and the Gsh-18 are better than the makarov?
And how are the hk416 and SCAR-L improvements on the m4/m16 the same way the QSZ-95 is an improvement on the type 56/81 and the ak-12/15 improvements on the ak74m?
Also look at NATO. A lot of armies, like my own countries army, the U.K. Are a shadow of their former selves. Our challenger 2 tank may be top of the line, but we have 55, Russia alone has 10,000+ modern or modernised tanks. The British army aren't fielding modernised challenger 1's, they got sold to Oman. Same with the fv 432 which an be bought on the uk market for 5-10k, making it a popular extreme off road machine. And the challenger 2's are the only MBT's in active service. European militaries standards are dropping, while Russian and Chinese Standards for their professional armies increase.
Small arms can change the course of a war, look at the m1 Garand in ww2. The USA, with its aimpoints, ACOG's, night vision and green tip rounds may set them leagues ahead of an army like saddam's iraq, but against Russia or China the us does not have the advantage when it comes to infantry.
Chinese 5.8mm rounds are designed to perforate NATO soft body armour. And the Iranians with their .308 g3's can do the same but in a less modern way, .308 will just bust right through any soft armour. They'd rather use sheer power. And if the usa invaded Iran. The combat ranges would be commonly more than 300m, which would favour the .308 Iranian rifles, which are made on H&K tooling, so they have a modicum of quality.
What I'm trying to say in this tirade is the us is putting the money in all the wrong places. Us troops don't need a new service pistol, DMR, fighter bomber etc. They need a new at least 25% more effective service rifle, a new MBT, as well as armoured vehicle crew pdw.
The USA would do terribly against a country with a professional army with a will to fight, I.e. Russia, Iran, North Korea, China.
These militaries are tailor made to fight us troops while the us army is tailor made to fight insurgents. And does a shitty job at it.
I am an Englishman, I pray for peace but love the us, Russia, China, Korea, Iran and loads of other major military powers.
But USA don't get your ass kicked, upgrade your old m1 tank, replace the ageing m16/m4 and give your tank crews something better than a 1944 m3a1 grease gun. .45 acp sucks for a military round. Give them something like a mp7, p90, g36c, sig552 or even a mp5 ffs.
The m16/m4's 5.56 round doesn't have enough hitting power, so like I said before something 6-7mm that can fire in full auto is a dream. 6.5 Arisaka, 6.5 Swede, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.8 SPC, hell even .280 British or .276 pedersen would be old but work.
.223 is a shitty lmg round (hence the British Army dropping the FN Minimi/M249 SAW) and .223 sucks as a DMR round too, hence the British adopting a LMT .308 ar to replace the scoped long barrelled l85's/sa80's.
You need your infantry, IFV's and tanks to be superior to the enemy. Against North Korea or China your outnumbered 10-1 on infantry, and 20-1 on aircraft and tanks. It doesn't matter if DPRK MIG's and tanks are mostly rubbish, your done for outgunned 20-1.
Also unlike China or North Korea the us population would protest a large war, look at the Iraq war protests.
Iran would be able to fight a conventional war and a guerilla war at the same time. The terrain is to their advantage. Their troops have combat experience (in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, etc) you wouldn't be fighting a army like that of saddam's Iraq.
If you want to be taken seriously as an army, stop using Humvees with miniguns/.50cal's as armoured cars and m113's with 20/25mm's as light tanks. You need to upgrade you are outgunned buy your 'Enemies' and your allies. You wouldn't stand a chance against Russia or China.
    Step up your game USA.
God bless America, Russia, China, Iran, Korea, Syria, the U.K., Germany, Finland, Serbia And loads of other nations.
I pray for peace, but America don't get cocky, there are Lots of countries you couldn't go to war with and win.

Phil Macracken You can’t tell the difference between 4140 and 4150 unless it’s on full auto and belt fed. On a DMR/semi auto only, which this appears to be, you wouldn’t tell a difference

Elliot White that’s not the point. 4140 means the skimped on barrel steel. What else did they skimp on ?

    • @echofoxtrotwhiskey1595
      @echofoxtrotwhiskey1595 5 років тому +1

Phil Macracken No they didn’t skimp on the barrel. They made a decision based on the intended purpose of the rifle. Barrett doesn’t have a history of “skimping”.
