The Searchers as a Horror Film | Video Essay

- I took a classic film course in college and one of the films we discussed was John Ford's film, The Searchers. I'm not a huge Western fan (although I'll watch Tombstone anytime, Huckleberry), so I wasn't particularly interested initially. But after I watched it, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by its depth and John Wayne's performance. One of the things that kept popping into my head while watching was how frightening it actually is and so I wrote my final paper on how it could theoretically be categorized as a horror film just as much as a Western. What do you think?
Obviously, spoiler alert as I talk in depth about some key moments that give away quite a lot of the story. If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend adding it to your movie night list, pilgrim.

Der Beste Film aller Zeiten
nice video - great comparison to foxcatcher
I agree with most viewers here . The Searchers is one of J Waynes best and one of the best made Westerns ever.Unfortunately this video is blumshed by a terreible pompus review
I read the book and it is an oddity for sure. I thought the film was pretty good although it could be very strange in places.
Oh wow, I didn't know it was a book (and if I did I didn't remember). I'll have to check it out! Thanks for watching, Neighbor!
@@TheNeighborhoodBlockParty The novel was by Allan LeMay - the character of Martin was somewhat of a mystic who had dreams. Old Mose was a rancher and not the fellow portrayed in the movie....
@@johnzeszut3170 Oh a mystic would have been fun lol - I'll have to read it.
Gunfight At O.K. Corral. You need to see it.
Buenos días porfa subanla completa en español desde es buena película y actores gracias bendiciones
Lo siento, ¡trabajaré en esto!
Ricardo traduzir para português!
The premise is wrong based on language. You might get away with categorizing this film as a terror film but horror implies other worldly. Therefore this film doesn't qualify
You are incorrect. The denotation of a horror picture, defines that someone, dies. No matter what other genré, it may be.
The searches is a western movie not a horror film
Horror is defined, when someone dies.
Non ci sono sottotitoli in italiano e spagnolo 🤮👎
Mi dispiace, non devi essere scortese al riguardo. Lo esaminerò.
@@TheNeighborhoodBlockParty Friggin rude?? You're joking, right?? What are you, some kind of Christian, or something😄⁉️
This is a horror movie but for different reasons than the author analyses. the main character, even if full of racist hatred, turns out to be a noble man. Thus the conclusion - even if you are racist and hate "Indians", you are still most probably a good person. And the Comanches (and all Native Americans, by extension) remain murderers, kidnappers, and ultimately defeated by the superior "Cowboys". It makes my stomach turn. The fact that it's directed by John Ford who is an icon of American movies just makes it a more powerful tool of brainwashing.
I dont suppose that it could just be a movie made depicting the disgustingly cruel and barbaric treatment of white captives that were tortured and killed by Commanche Indians in the 19th century?
The Comanches were a warrior culture. They loved to fight and would travel great distances just to kill or enslave other native Americans.
A white native American movie 🎬 👎
The only reason, she was looking good😉!!
