I don't get it? I work in a heavy industrial industry and we use natural gas in 18 inch lines at 320 psi. Upstream valves should have tripped on loss of differential pressure and slammed shut. Even if the automatic safety systems were somehow compromised they should also have manual valves that should have been closed within an hour at the most. Why the delay?

This is what I do not get, they have the capability to turn off the flow of gas in that particular pipe line and even if that valves were damaged they can still turn it off further up or down the line!
7 hours is way too long a time to shutting off the valve to the liquid gas fueling the fire.
The stupid car broke the valve,,So they shut off up & down stream valves,,now pipe empty's by burning gas

The Pipe Flow is Shut Down. The Remaining Natural Gas has to burn off as it naturally expands back to gas from liquid.

I live in Laporte and my cousin was literally right behind the car that exploded thank the Lord she’s OK. My dad is also a police officer and he was over there like placing all the barriers and he’s there until 11 PM. Hello if you know him, his name is Officer Tristan just make sure he’s OK.
Where did they shut the pipe line off at? 500 miles away. There should be a valve in each direction at a few hundred yards. This is incompetence. Someone in a fire suit could shut it or have a hydraulic remote valve.
We are not a serious country any longer. DEI hires and incompetent employees gives you the low cost solution that is easily destroyed.
The fact that it will take "hours" longer past the 7 hours stated by the news reporter tells you that the valve they had to turn off is far out into the Gulf.
So unsafe to cut costs by not having isolation valves at regular one mile intervals on such an explosive and volatile fossil fuel source.

They did. There's still liquid natural gas in the pipeline that has to burn off. There's a LOT of LNG in a pipeline. and it all has to turn to a gaseous state. Shutting off flow doesn't mean the flame suddenly stops. It takes *hours* for liquid natural gas to turn to a gas state and burn off.
@@TheMrMused Is the damaged facility a regulator valve? I’ve always thought that in these circumstances, there would be an automatic shut off somewhere along the line that is tripped when a leak occurs, but maybe that’s different in Texas.
@@Robin-ng4lh the auto-shut-on-pressure-drop valves do trip, but remember this is a *liquid* natural gas pipeline (I don't know the diameter of this line, but I expect the pressure to be over 300psi). LNG is 600X denser than the gaseous state. All that liquid between the valves needs to change state and burn off.
