You could have the "fake" rival come from a family that immigrated from another region! The rival was born in the Masa region so they're first generation and Masa is all they know. They have the talent to be a fantastic gym leader/etc. but since their family doesn't have any generational standing in Masa they are usually dismissed. The "fake" rival might even side with the antagonist team for a bit, depending on the group's goals. I also like the designs of the true rival in the first dress and the streetwear.

I like this idea. The rival can be antagonistic in a way that is objectively wrong but due to their goals and ambitions, it is understandable. They are a person who strives for greatness and wants to be a gym leader or even the champion. However, the traditions of the Maza region forbid them from doing so. This could be incredibly frustrating for them since they know that they are talented and feel they deserve that recognition. This leads to them having a philosophy that traditions are meant to be abandoned or destroyed. For the first half of the game, they have these beliefs that a person is only as good as they make themselves, and no prior tradition has a say in that.
Part of the plot could be the player helping both rivals realize how to embrace these traditions. Maybe once the legendaries begin to be introduced is when the first rival starts to change and evolve into a supporting character rather than an antagonist. Maybe this is spurred on by certain rituals or something that helped summon the legendaries and saving the player and rival. The rival could realize that, without those traditions, they would have been in great danger. They then begin to see why traditions can be good and all that stuff.
There's much to think about and play with regarding this concept. I really like it!

Honestly I wish I could see this sort of “being your true self” thing with an older character. Like an old abuela who has always hated how her family has raised her in their old fashioned traditions and so over time she became more jaded, frustrated, and even hating life. As she ages she begins to regret putting up with her past and just makes offhand remarks about it. Then when she battles the player, seeing how young, lively, and carefree they are she realises that she can become her true self and that it’s never too late! Then in the post game she acts a lot happier and childlike. Idk just the idea of an older person finding themselves is an idea I’ve always wanted represented more in media because sometimes we dont see our true selves for a long time. Not very good at putting ideas into words so I hope this doesn’t sound too odd

I'd love to see the idea that, initially, this fakeout rival is really humble about being better than you, but as the game goes he becomes more and more cocky. Like, after the first battle, you CAN beat him, but the game makes sure he's as hard as possible each time, and he gets more and more jaded by his talent as time passes. On top of that, with the real gym leader, to sort of match with the themes of her not wanting to have her position, she looks or feels really awkward in her gym uniform and with her facepaint, so she drops the look entirely when she goes on her own journey, only to then bring it back at the end of the game with her own unique spin on it. I feel like Pokémon really struggles with giving the rivals a good arc that makes them feel relatable

I think it would be great to have the MC meet this trainer BEFORE she becomes the gym leader. You get to see her being free and expressing her true personality. But once she becomes the leader you see how that burden takes a toll on her and changes her. This could become a plot point with her and her grandparent (which may also run through the story as a whole.) This can also play into her 2nd rival role, as we see her spirit (pun intended) come back once she leaves the gym and becomes her own trainer.
With some people being trapped in traditional ways and some rejecting it, we can see a large array of different viewpoints and commentaries on culture and tradition.

Going along with this, I think it would be super cool to have her show up at the beginning of the game as “just another kid” to get a starter Pokémon with the player character and first rival. Then her grandma can show up and say “you already have Pokemon of your own” but they’re really just hand-me-down ghost types she got alongside the title of gym leader.
Next time you see the girl is when you challenge the first gym, and you can be super shocked that the cheerful little girl you met earlier is now A) depressed bc of her job and B) the first gym leader!
And finally, when the grandma realizes she needs to let the girl go free and do her own thing, she gets the 3rd starter and can actually start her new journey.

Just based off of the four final sketches, I think I prefer Claire's design for her gym leader form but Jack's design for her rival form.
Jack's first design feels a bit too child-like, I don't think it sells her enough as someone to be listened to. I also prefer the colors on Claire's design, but that's very subjective. However, I feel that Claire's second design is a bit too "punk" for the character's theme. My understanding is that she's not fully rejecting tradition, just "modernizing" it, in a way, and I feel that Jack's design better reflects that. I also like the reference to Lilorina in the hair.

@@ItsRubenMorris I agree with you completely, the child look works for the story, especially when she's being set up as the true rival for a new trainer. The age should be quite similar. I also think that Claire's gym leader design is a bit too droopy and sad. You want someone who looks stifled and nearly ready to rebel, not utterly depressed and broken. Jack's design has a bit more of that going on. Her irritation matches her depression, and she looks like someone who is unhappily submitting to family pressure. I like that her hair and clothes are more basic and less cute than Claire's design too. It adds to the idea she's being forced into this traditional role, and these clothes and hair were picked by a grandmother who wore the exact same thing 50 or 60 years ago. It also transitions well to the more exuberant enthusiasm Jack's second design shows. Claire's 2nd version is a bit more bland. It shows someone who looks quietly confident, not someone who just had the weight of the world taken off her shoulders.
I think it'd be interesting if there was a story reason about why she was being pushed into a gym leader position so young. Not to pull a Disney here, but it'd make a lot of sense if her parents were dead, and her grandmother was getting too elderly to keep working as a gym leader, and she felt like she had to conform to these expectations, even thought she's far too young and inexperienced and hates it. That would add a lot of motivating force for the grandmother character too. She's desperately clinging to family traditions as a 'replacement' for those she lost, and not realizing at first how much harm it does to her grandchild who is standing in for the shadows of others.

Another regional variant could be for the Duskull line, main difference is they reflect the colorfull pattern of mexican skulls. And this would in turn explain the Mazah peoples festive face paint to mimick duskull. It's final evolution can be reminiscent of Santa Muerte, a female folk mexican personification of death who is said to guide souls to the afterlife. This is alrdy a parallel to Dusknoir's dex entry and it's Mazah form can take on a more slender/feminine design and replace it's antenna beacon with a veil and roses and perhaps retain the colorfull skull of duskull.

But then do a similar thing with froslass whereby only the females evolve into a new Pokémon and then the males would evolve into dusclops then dusknoir

Some interesting ideas that could fit into this theme for other gym leaders in the region:
    - A parent who has been a gym leader for decades, trying to set a good example for their child who will inherit the gym one day. They use losing to you as some sort of teaching opportunity.
    - A gym leader who was never meant to inherit the gym, like maybe they have an older sibling who "abdicated" at the last minute and they are struggling to live up to the sudden unexpected pressure.
    - A wealthy person who bought the title when the previous gym leader left/passed away with no heir. They don't respect the tradition and instead respect hard work. (I'm thinking this could be like an old money VS new money kind of thing).
    - A person who feels entitled to the position of gym leader because they've been raised from a young age being told they "deserve" it. Does not take losing well.
    - A brother and sister who both own the gym because they inherited it together. Maybe too similar to Tate and Liza? Perhaps they are more competitive than cooperative, then.

but in this it could be that your rival battled the sibling that you don't, and that these competitive siblings(who both own the gym but refuse to work together)take turns but always try to one-up each other.
This could also have an interesting story element where the siblings end up being defeated by whomever the antagonist team is, but then the protagonist and their rival come and save the day by working together, and thus teach the siblings that working together is a better solution to their problems.

The name "Valentina" means something along the lines of strong, healthy, or vivacious. It's a name she could grow into, more than it being incongruous with her identity.
She's named under the assumption and expectation that she'll be strong. Her name itself carries the pressure of the family tradition. With the burden of her familial responsibility, and her choosing to cast that weight off of her shoulders, the name helps tell the story of a girl who finds her own strength, and her own way to live.
This could be interpreted as her refusing to uphold tradition, maybe rebelling against it or even disrespecting it. With something as meaningful as dia de los muertos, and the character you use to carry it as a theme, this could be seen as insensitive by the one person who has the mind to dig that deep, if she doesn't still value the tradition she comes from, and its meaning.
It may be wise to preserve her themes throughout her development as a character. After all, we're often stronger with the guidance of those who came before us.

I like that first one. If you wanted to do something to upset the status quo, you could have each of them have 2 pokemon. You go up to challenge the parent, but the kid jumps in and fights you first. Then the parent fights you right afterwards for the actual battle. In effect, it's a 4-pokemon battle, which is pretty normal as far as gym battles go. But having to engage twice changes the traditional fighting mechanic just a little bit.
Of course, if you lost that fight, it'd get awkward to pull the same thing twice.

-with the cartel (mexican maffia) one, I can imagine that is depicted like rutheless and fierce dark-type criminals that lately have been collaborating with the bad guys of the region... but turns out that (in an totally not sarcastic way of saying 'cause im no Stephen Spielberg) they were decendants of ancient guardians that were doing justice (in a Batman-like manner) and defending the weak from the shadows (again, like Batman).
-and with the brothers, I could totally see them like famous pop-stars singers, each one specializing in fighting and bug types (being these two the only types that resist each other) and each one with a unique battling style. While the two of them want to search for a weak point in their enemies, the fighting one will throw relentless and multiple strikes to weaken his opponent, the bug one would wait for his adversary to mess up in one of his turns... then strike!!

now, I've been watching the videos for a while now, and here are some core things I must say about them, this might have been already covered by you or maybe you just already know them but is something I really wanted to make clear since, I'm Mexican and thought it would be appropriate.
1.- Mexico is huge! Mexico is a huge country who's people are extremely unique and often clash with each other. Now this doesn't mean is in bad spirit, although some might do it with that intention. Mexicans from the north of the country are quite different, both in demeanor and in looks than Mexicans from the south of the country, this is something you need to keep in mind!
2.- Going from the last point, Mexico is really into tradition, but also has some really economically invested cities. This is another strike contrast between the north and the south, while the south of the country is rather rich culturally the north could be considered more focused on development. A real thing that was really talked about was the idea of the north of the country going independent from the south, I'm not joking and while most people took it as a joke though some were rather serious about it, however nothing came out from it.
3.- There are a lot of myths and cultural aspects to take from. Papantla Flyers, Aztec culture, the island of the dolls etc.
4.- Now some soft nitpicks: Mexico is North America. I just wanted to make that clear.
5.- A little known fact in most media, white Mexicans exist! Most versions of Mexicans in pop culture tend to be tanned looking, and while is true that most Mexicans are like that, there are some that are quite white looking, after all Mexico is a really diverse country that's product of the mix of Aztecs and Europeans, so seeing that being reflected on the gym leaders would be awesome.
6.- Go all out on the scary aspects of the entries, pokemon loves hiding dark lore on their pokemon, you shouldn't feel restricted about it!
This are all just quick points I thought when watching your videos, by all means I'm not posting this to complain or something like that, I'm just mentioning this because those are aspects often unnoticed by people when talking about Mexico, and is just something I would rather see being reflected on a project as awesome as this.
    Keep the amazing work!

This is one of the most innovative ideas I've personally ever seen for a fan-made region, and I'm glad to see that a more workshop-style video was the reason for it! If you guys can continue to bounce off like this in the future, then I think the region will turn out to be one of the most creative in a very long time among the community (at least for me, personally)!
In terms of this first gym leader, I love her, and I love her concept, and I love how she ties in so perfectly to your theme of tradition and generational gap, while simultaneously subverting the traditions of the franchise itself! I already love the name Valentina, and her shortening it to Val; I think this is a perfect indication of her character! As for her actual Pokémon, I agree that her ace should definitely be the passed-down (probably family-bred) Liloriña, but I feel her other 1-2 Pokémon should be wildcard choices. Say, before becoming the gym leader, Val would've only agreed to do so under the condition that she can also use any other Pokémon of her choice while maintaining Liloriña as the ace, and her family would have had to begrudgingly agree! After the story decides that Val becomes your second, "true" rival, I think it would be nice if her replacement would be an alternative gym! Similar to how SwSh confirms that there are the "major" division (the eight gyms in the story) and the "minor" division (gym leaders who aren't part of the story, like Klara, Avery, Peony, etc.), the Mazah region could employ a similar concept, whereby if gym leaders decide to retire (or in this case, quit), there's always another gym of another type ready to replace it! As a tidbit, maybe the player character can encounter this new first gym in the post-game!
As for the second (2nd) gym leader, I think it'd be interesting to do a Fairy-type to explore more of the mysticism and lore of Mexican culture, and I think it'd be nice to see how the story revolving around the legendaries could slowly unfold with this gym leader! They can perhaps be a witch or witchcraft practitioner? I know you don't have legendaries yet, but I think it's nice to see how the story overall develops through the gym leaders, instead of merely being figure-heads or obstacles to overcome. Like with Val, this gym leader becomes relevant to the story, so it'd be nice to explore the Mazah region from the perspectives and narratives of several characters, rather than being spoon-fed information from the Professor or your rivals. I feel like BW did this the best when their gyms were directly involved in disjointed story beats, but with this region, it'd be nice to see everyone involved with the main story!

It‘d be interesting if when we reach the ghost gym, Valentina would still be in training, and her grandmother would be constantly behind her back telling her how to fulfill the role. Not only would it provide great characterisation for this important character, it‘d also allow the game to organically explain to new players how the gym system works, via the grandmother‘s tutoring that we witness. And it‘d tie in well with the starter‘s theme of communication barriers, this one in particular being the contrast between Valentina‘s desires and those of her grandmother

The more rare or beautiful the feather, the more expensive, thus in turn the higher class you were. Think this would be a cool idea for something.

fighting type pro-wrestling ring where leadership corresponds to who has the belt, and the passing down is decided more by executives (who decide who wins and loses b/c it's pro wrestling). Maybe the leader only recently got his position after struggling against these executives. This gym could show the flip-side of the problem with the first gym, where tradition is used to keep someone out of a position rather than coercing them into one (that position being gym leader).

    Okay Name idea:
“Florencia” & “Flo”. Hear me out🙏🏽
“Florencia” is the feminine name version of Florernción, which means flowering in spanish. This name could work really well to achieve what you guys wanted. It’s a traditional name that’s literally “too flowery” like you guys said, and would contrast really well against her true personality. When she is still being called “Florencia”, it can symbolise how she is still flowering, that there’s still a lot of growth and potential in her that is trying to blossom into existence. After she leaves her position as gym leader and has grown up a bit, she would refer to herself as “Flo”, a bit modern and hip, and which would compliment her new colourful look and true personality.

I am making a region based on Norway, with the overall theme being Tradition VS Progress, and the message being that you need to embrace both, and this gave me a really good idea! So in Norway, it is very normal for families to have multiple generations of sailors and stuff, even I come from a family like that. I was thinking of having a water type gym that's actually like a fishing boat, and the gym leader has just become old enough to inherit the gym, and his father is pressuring him to become the new gym leader and stuff, but he doesn't want to. His sister however really wants to be a gym leader, but their father is like "The ocean is not a place for a sweet little girl like you", the end of their arc being the father accepting the wishes of his children and letting his son go to follow his own dreams, while his daughter takes over the gym after her brother. I don't know for sure, maybe after battling the gym, you are forced to battle the sister, and she proves herself as a strong trainer to her father, and he realizes that maybe tradition isn't the most important thing in the world, and that they should do what makes them happy.

As far as these designs I really like the second one (the one in leggings) for once she’s your rival. That one feels the most genuine amalgamation between what is expect from a Pokémon IP and the Spanish influences. It also has the strongest ties to the signature Pokémon. Maybe an idea to consider is she doesn’t take a starter Pokémon but keeps the ghost Pokémon. Why does your rival have to have a starter? Plus a ghost would be challenging to any of the starters.

What if in the Mazah region, you don’t start off with a rival. And in the first route you meet her without her Day of the Dead get up and you battle her and she heads back to her town. Maybe later we get introduced to the customs of the Day of the Dead and the grandma holds like a town meeting passing off the title to her granddaughter. Once all of that happens you go to the gym to battle her, and she recognizes you from the battle earlier and she sees you as the player battle and see how strong you got to be this early in your journey. After the battle she realizes that if she would ever grow to be strong she would need to go on a journey of her own. After the battle she goes up to her grandma and confesses how she wants to go on a journey and not be a leader. The grandma accepts it and she becomes our new rival just like you guys said. Also, I love the Valentina name and love the middle design you guys did.
Also another idea for a gym leader would be one that hasn’t been done, a cook or chef. Mexico is known for a lot of cuisine, so maybe make a grass type gym leader, who might be an older lady, who like runs a battle cafe/gym. Maybe after you beat it you are open to get foods, like masala in Alola region. Idk how this would play out but definitely interesting.
Ok I’m adding this just to see if you could add this as I just thought of it. What would be really cool is a Pokémon based on a Mariachi band, each based on a different instrument typically in one. Trumpet, Guitar, Violin, and maybe an Accordian. The thing is they are all the same Pokémon but are of differing appearances, like the Oricorios. Maybe with this concept, there could be a gym where you battle all four as a group but it’d play as one at a time. So they battle as one with each their own Pokémon. I feel like it’d be an interesting concept.
Also another Pokémon concept is for an armadillo like Pokémon. They are found in Mexico, and is also the animal found in The Road to El Dorado. I’m not sure what can be done for this Pokémon, maybe make it a Normal/Rock type you find in a rocky area? Obviously high defense, but maybe make it have two modes like Morpeko or Eiscue where it switches after something happens. Maybe if it gets hit with a physical move it buffs it’s defense and closes but also drops attack? It’d be cool to see, but not really that important to Mexican culture so it might not be a memorable enough animal to make it into the Mazah region.

I prefer the first version of the character a lot more, especially with the family crest idea based on their signature pokemon. That could be an interesting theme for the gym leaders to have a family crest that matches their ace, with each one representing something different. For example the ghost gym leader's emblem could symbolise the sorrow and mourning that comes when a family member passes on but the current leader tries to change it into something new, specifically tears of joy and laughter. Instead of following the tradition of mourning and remembrance, she celebrates by trying to make people laugh and remember the good times. This could be tied in with how she's had her Lilorina since she was a child and always tried to help it cheer up, leading to her being very loud and playful.

(and a possible B-plot for the last suggestion. She ostensibly left to become one of the region's champions, and maybe she even achieved that goal, but in actuality she left because she was also feeling stifled by the way she was supposed to be performing these traditions. We can set it as, whenever a challenger defeats a gym leader without losing a single pokemon, the challenger has the right to take the gym. Or there were too many complaints saying that the gym was too easy. (something around or along the lines of that)
After "Val" loses her family's gym, which was passed down for generations, she feels remorseful and ashamed for not taking things seriously. From there, we could give her character growth. She would become her own trainer that respects modern and traditional values, training to take back the gym she once lost.

  • @ethanyork9689
    @ethanyork9689 3 роки тому +2

I adore this idea so much. Maybe a cool idea would be seeing your rival slowly grow more into her style throughout the game. So the first time you encounter her in the gym she's completely decked in these clothes she's not at all comfortable in (third design from 25:50), and then after she's "resigned", on your first battle with her as a rival, she might still have her hair pinned up and a dress on, but with less pomp and accessories. (something her family would want her to wear everyday, like the first design at 25:50, but without as much hair accessory going on) Then, as you encounter her, you can LITERALLY watch her find her style and expression, through picking out a look that she feels speaks to her identity. Maybe she shows up in the yellow hoodie as a normal length hoodie, hair up but in a looser style, and leggings similar to the ones in the second design at 25:50. Then, for her final look, she'll have let her hair all down and wild, swapped to baggy pants from leggings, found a sweet pair of high-tops, and have cropped her hoodie herself, DIY-style! (I'd think this one might look almost identical to the original "streetwear" design you showcased with the grandmother around , just with the hair down like in the second design at 25:50)
I think this could be a really neat way to watch her buck tradition and explore her own path in real time! Maybe something like this could necessitate a new Pokemon design, or for you to play with Lilorina, provided that's her partner aside from the starter, a la Hop's Wooloo. Maybe it's common knowledge that it evolves into Yoronaqua, which is known for terrorizing children, but when it comes time for hers to evolve, it turns out to be a brand new branched evolution entirely? I could see a design based on "laughing so hard you cry", or maybe a design pattern that takes Yaqueena's love of playing with the youth into a "party based" design space where it will sing rather than scream to try to get people hyped and excited. This might draw a cool comparison to the region's theme of youth and tradition, since Yaqueena already plays with that theme by favoring youth over adults. I'm not sure exactly how you would type a Pokemon like that, but I could see dropping water for electric if it was based on the excitement and festivity theme, OR dropping ghost for fairy in the "cry laughing" concept, to signify her literally moving away from the tradition of her family, which is heavily tied to ghost type, in favor of her more playful attitude, which would be represented by fairy (or another type, I'm sure you could take it many directions).
Sorry for the lengthy comment, I just think this is a fantastic new idea, and there's just so much to love and so many ideas to explore! Great work as always, and I'm excited to see where this goes!

Playing on the family and tradition theme, I think the fake rival could actually be related to the main villain and you could show that forcing traditions onto others can be dark, harmful, and unhealthy. Evidently the gym leaders and your true rival would show that even though traditions can be outdated, they are still represented in there own way by different generations and are loved all the same. There could even be an older gym leader that doesn’t have anyone to pass down the gym to, and they have to break tradition in order to pass it down to a trainer that admired them from when they were in their youth to now. Meanwhile the main villain enforces traditions heavily on the fake rival which causes them to lose sight of their true selves.
As for Valentina, I think she should be slouching in her design when you first meet her, implicating that she really doesn’t want to be there and or is unhappy about having to be a gym leader ( with her family always telling her to stand up straight and not to slouch ). Then as you battle her, she slowly starts to stand up tall like she’s proud to be fighting you and you inspire her. And at the end when she becomes your rival, she doesn’t slouch and has a more energetic feel to her. In her gym clothes, it could be more ghostly or dead-like, like a rotting skeleton being dressed up in flowers, morbid but colorful. And then in her second design, she dresses like the final sketches. I also don’t mind her being the first gym leader, but I think adding a gym leader before her could be cool too. It’ll really show how strong your fake rival is and it’ll build up to them being the main villains family member.

Also for the transition to the current gym leader, I was thinking that the new rival had a younger sibling that wanted to be gym leader but since he/she was younger she wasn't chosen. So seeing that there is an empty spot in the gym leader position the younger sibling could take the place.

Watching this is utterly fascinating. I’m making my own Region (who isn’t?) and seeing your Region have this style and these themes of Tradition is amazing, as it’s almost directly opposed to my own Region. The Suriva Region is brand new, having only been founded some ten years ago, previously having been hidden away from the rest of the world by the power of one of its Legendaries. The main themes of the region are shaping the future and making your mark on history, and the fact that everyone there is a fresh immigrant is an important one. Everyone is bringing their own traditions and cultures with them, but while they’re important on personal levels they just don’t shape the greater story. It’s a region based around the individuals, who are working to create ‘their Suriva’, and they all seem to have competing ideas on what that is.

It used to be sort of tradition to give names from what the day of their birth is (her second/middle name) and the name of one of the parents mother (her first name ).
My great great grandma's name ( from my great grandpa's side):Jacinta
She was born in the day of the amalias
So they named her Jacinta Amalia
( It was a tradition that in the time my grandma was born to her teens was semi done. They were starting to get into the sense of naming their children after telenovelas )

I really like the First drawing, the one with the sweat pants. It really breaks the boundaries that have been set by the previous games of your rival always wearing jeans and a coat or sweatshirt of some sort. Her wearing the sweat pants and baggy coat is her rejecting not only the president set by her family and their tradition, but also the president for the games as a whole. Love that idea!
For the next gym leader, maybe a fire type, Someone who has a raging temper that he lets out on the battle field. Maybe he eats hot peppers before a battle to get his temper flaring? After his battle streak being broken by you and your rival(s), he realises that he should calm down and not take losing so seriously (and decides that peppers aren't good before battles). When you battle him again (if you do) he could have gained a water/fire type as his second ace/ runner up pokemon.
Design wise, maybe something close to a cowboy (orange flannel with rolled up sleeves, blue jeans with tears, beige cowboy hat with the badge as an emblem on the band around his hat, caucasian in skin tone, etc.)
I hope that you see this Mr. Jack and Ms. Claire!

I feel like the "fake" rival could go in a couple of really interesting thematic directions. Once of them being that he's stuck in the traditions of the region and is basically someone who's a trainer because that what his parents where and their parents were, and he was trained to be extremely good at battles but he's not actually interested in battling. This would work best if Pokemon contests were a thing in this region or something similar. The other option I thought of was that he's an outsider who's been othered because of his skill that threatens the traditions of idk some important family who's trying to save face by crushing him, although that would also work for the player character much better.

I love the idea of the theme of the region being ideological differences! It ties directly into the idea of your starters being based on communication, The arching theme of the game could be bridging the gap between different ideologies and this could be explored in a ton of ways! For example not only could you use the theme of tradition vs free expression and generational differences, as shown through your idea for the rival; but you could also explore the cultural differences of the Maza region by having the second gym actually be two gyms, with one gym leader representing the Spanish conquistador aspect of the culture (maybe a catholic religious theme? descendent of conquistadors?), and the other gym leader representing the culture of the native Mazans (maybe a kind of Aztec or Mayan theme? Descendent of an Mazan warrior?) these two gyms could both be the “second” gym and exist in a rivalry with each other, with each claiming the rights to being that area’s gym. Your character could try to find a way to bridge the gap between them while choosing which one you want to battle while your rival battles the other (your “fake” rival will already have beat them both of course)

Love the idea of the first gym leader becoming a recurring character and a rival to the protagonist.
I also thought about the idea of the original rival taking over as the gym leader before you actually mentioned it, haha.
I think maybe the way it could be done is the character arc for the gym leader can span from when you sort of enter the town of the gym, to after you beat her. There can be an event after you get the gym badge (maybe with the evil team of the region showing up to wreak havoc on the town) that allows you to bond with the gym leader and interact more with the grandmother, understanding their dynamic etc., then when you finish that mini-adventure it could feel more earned for the gym leader to understand their goals more and gain the courage to tell their grandmother how they feel (maybe it's like they were able to stand up to the antagonists alongside you easily, so they figure if they can stand up to a pseudo-terrorist group lol (which is really what the evil teams are in the pokemon games) then they should be able to tell their family how they feel). She could also realise as she does the quest with you that she prefers a more action-heavy and exploration-based life, as opposed to the monotonous role of being a gym leader and just letting trainers come to you. The time with this quest would as I said allow the gym leader's arc to take place in a fleshed out way over time, and it would also feel more natural for the original rival to take over because it's not a sudden decision that came out of nowhere but a response to the situation and conflict that developed

Hey, in terms of the story for the Mazah region there are some cool ideas I think you could use. So the obvious one is the idea of the past verses the present and the future with their being a now heavy divide between the mindsets of the older generation and the new generation.
So for example, in the Mazah region you would have two groups, one with youngsters and 'delinquents' who are tired of traditions trying down thier path options in life and dictating how they live thier lives. They dont hate the traditions but rather how they are now being incorporated to their lives. They want to respect the traditions in thier own way but also show their love for thier culture in a new way
And then you have the older generation who see them as causing trouble and disrespecting thier fore fathers. They understand that the younger generation wants to show thier respect in a different way about they feel that the 'delinquents' arnt taking the time to fully learn and understand the traditions of the past
And now throughout the region there is this rift growing between the two generations and they are getting more polarising
Which is where your idea of the gym system could come in. With a concept that in ancient times there was a war between the people of Mazah and neighbouring regions (referring to the Mayan wars and skirmishes that used to occur), during which the 18 chieftains rallied together and defeated the enemy. And so to reward thier efforts, the legendary pokemon blessed the 18 chieftains with immeasurable power, and it is through that bloodline that the now 18 gym leaders rule (with the elite 4 and champion of the region being appointed by chair of elders, though more lore can be placed there)
So now the chair has allowed a new gym to open after with the leader being someone outside of the 'Nobel bloodline'
And the region is in a big divide over how this situation should be handled
And maybe the main antagonist could be a malicious diety pokemon that has awoken due to all the negative energy
And defiting that pokemon would like the boss battle climax of the story
    An idea 🤷🏾‍♂️😅
Anyone feel free to add your own ideas and take this apart or build on it!

Seeing as Mari (I decided to follow an idea in the comment thread started by Hunter Larrison and name her Mari) doesn't feel like she wants to follow in her family tradition of being a gym leader, I thought it'd be an interesting contrast to have a sibling who wants nothing more than to be a gym leader. I feel like an older sibling would be a perfect foil to Mari's thinking. And not just an older sibling, I think she needs an older brother. I figure having him be a fighting-type gym leader would be an interesting contrast to his sister's ghost-type gym. He'd have the same Dios de Los Muertos motif about him, but instead of a human skull painted onto his face, he'd have something akin to a bull's skull. This would also fit with his own unique theme; el matador. The way I see it, Mari and her brother's family have a central theme of death around them. Their abuela (grandmother) was a ghost-type gym leader, their abuelo (grandfather) was the grass-type gym leader, who specialized in flowers that honored the dead. Their mother is the current psychic-type gym leader, acting as a medium between the living and the dead, while their father is a Dark-type gym leader who acts as a shaman and uses magic that centers around death and communication with the dead. Now, if you're asking what a matador has to do with death, a matador is an entertainer whose number one task is to fight the bull to the death. Preferably the bull's death, but sometimes the bull wins. He is proud and boastful, claiming that his family has the strongest line of gym leaders in all of the Mazah region, and that he is the greatest of all his family. He defends his family's "honor" as gym leaders very sternly, boasting about their skills and talents as the best. He even brags about Mari being the greatest ghost-type gym leader there is, saying that she can even talk to them. This of course puts a lot of unwanted pressure on Mari's shoulders, making her want less and less to do with being a gym leader.
Also, since I mentioned over half of the gym leaders already as being part of one family (grass, psychic, dark, ghost, and fighting), it might be interesting to make the rest of the gym leaders a part of another family. Have a bit of a family rivalry going on between the two houses. Both claim to be the best gym leader family in the region and fight tooth and nail with each other to prove their point. But, Mari, not wanting to be a gym leader, goes against her family's backs, and falls in love with a member of their rivals. Like the Romeo and Juliet movie starring Leonardo Dicaprio. Of course, nobody dies in this retelling of the story, but the drama would still be there.

Really dig your concepts! Specifically the one with the yellow jacket seems to work really well.
I'm not really sure about the 2nd gym leader (although I really like the idea of a steel or fire one) but I'd like to leave a suggestion for the possible 3rd or 4th gym leader:
Since the third rival seems to be sweeping through both the player and the gym at this time, you could possibly play with the idea that said rival begins to struggle with the 3d/4th gym, by making this gym dependant on your start pokemons type, like we had it in B/W already. For example, if you pick the grass starter, then your rival with his fire starter has to face the same water-type gym as you.
Combining all those types into a fitting theme for one single gym could be a real challenge though, so maybe there need to be three seperate designs for that.
Some tinkering with this idea lead me to the idea that that rival, faced with a challenge he can't overcome himself, starts joining the rival team of the game.
On that note here's another quick idea: maybe that rival team is focused on the whole idea (again playing with that day-ofthe-dead-thematic) of bringing pokemon back to live. They might even despise the traditions like day of the dead and are working on something that could get incorporated into a new game mechanic; a Pokemons afterlife.
It's just a rough concept for sure, but I'd like to imagine that certain Pokemon (whilst holding an item) get an afterlife ability, such as "If this Pokemon reaches Zero HP, then continue fighting for two more rounds, although half damage" or something like that.
Wow, ou guys really inspired me with this one, keep going strong with your stuff!

    First off, positives:
I really like the first design of Val, after she becomes your rival, letting her hair down and wearing more casual clothes. I also really like the second design for her in her gym leader regalia, it definitely feels more unique while also keeping that traditional look.
    Where it can be improved:
I think one neat way to portray that theme of she really doesn’t like being a gym leader, maybe her makeup isn’t complete, or barely any effort put into it. Like maybe her bun is a bit messy, maybe it could be a skull mask instead of actually being makeup. Also, going on with that idea, maybe when she casts off the title of gym leader, she doesn’t wear the makeup anymore. I think that could be a cool reveal for the player, after having seen her this whole time in the full, traditional outfit, the transformation between before and after I think would be even more like “wow!” Without that makeup, while also showing how she really is coming into her own style.

I would like a poison type gym leader, as there are a lot of poisonous animals in Mexico that are actually not very deadly, but they do hurt and could potentially take a life, reflected in a gym leader who's outward appearance is very toxic and threatening, but is a much softer person then once thought, but still can put up a fight, and their themes could be the downsides or toxic sides of these traditions, like not being completely traditional in their battle style like raihan and being shunned by their family for it.

Love the idea surrounding this ghost gym leader/rival character. Hope you stick with her. Also, here's an idea, since we have a Team Rocket stand-in count as a technical gym leader in the past two games, AND Giovanni himself being both Team Rocket's leader and the Ground Gym Leader. Maybe we can play with that too.
Like, have this Team Rocket stand-in be a stand-in for the infamous cartel. They sell illegal potions to naive trainers that either get their Pokemon sick, or go crazy, but also make it addictive. They're not a main antagonist group, but they are a legitimate issue unlike Skull and Yell. And their capo would be the Poison Gym Leader, and to go into the theme of passing down the generations. The Capo has MANY admins who are all his "sons" in a way that he took them all under his wing while they were street urchins, and they send up fighting the player in an attempt to inherit his spot once he retires. Which gradually builds up to the point when you actually have to fight the Capo himself, after your "rival" just managed to barely beat him.
