He is finally here!! Thank you all for your patience and support over on Instagram as I worked on this lil dude, it warms my heart that so many of you were interested in my original characters. In this video I go through my character design process, covering initial sketches, gathering reference, doing tonal studies, clothing design, color palettes, and putting it all together to create my character, Strawberry Saul.
This style of video defintely takes a little longer to make so your support means everything. This video was also a lil more scary to share but that's because this topic means so much to me. I have been creating my own worlds and characters since I was a kid and never was confident in sharing them, and here I am sharing them to potentially tens of thousands of people. I don't know if this was intentional but (at least to me) he looks so much like Pedro Pascal. Which is perfect because I think Pedro has that really sweet look. Strawberries are my favorite fruit so of course I love Saul!
it really does feel magical when you're able to translate the visual thoughts to paper, and have it come exactly or even better than you'd thought up. i like to think of it as a superpower, because it really is amazing to put your thougghtd to paper; it opens up a new world and makes you feel like you can do anything

These videos mean SO MUCH to me as someone who has been planning original characters in my head for so long but doesn’t have the skillset yet to bring them to life exactly how I want to, this really motivates me to practice with my art more :3

In the last bit of the video you wrote that the Saul doodles were inspired by Eugene from Tangled and all I can see now is Saul trying to do the smolder to Bill.😂
Your characters are always super awesome and I would be lying if I said that none of my characters are inspired by your characters. I have a character that I actually made last year inspired by Saul ( his name is Luca but he also goes by Slingshot). But getting inspired by your art has helped my art progress. Any way I'm rambling Saul is probably one if the coolest ocs I have ever seen and I cant wait to see more of him and Bill and any of your ocs. Despite being someone with little to no artistic skill at all I’ve enjoyed looking through all your videos and how you go about you process, you just have such free spirited and fun vibe to all your work that always makes it a marvel to look at. I’m someone who’s more creative in writing but you’ve made me want to consider picking up drawing to further develop my storytelling skills and further understand the passions of people I love around me because my girlfriend is also a very talented artist! I’m a senior in high school so it’s later than most people who get good at it and I’ve tried in the past before but you and a lot of other creators made me realize that at the end of the day, what’s most important is that you enjoy yourself, who cares if you never get “good”. You may never read this but I really appreciate you for existing, you’re awesome ❤

exactly! do what makes you happy and what is fulfilling to you, and it's never too late to go back to art
tips for designing props (and characters too if you have no clear idea of what you want) thumbnails are lifesavers! even if you kinda know what you want to create for a weapon for example doing 10-15 tiny thumbnails gets you thinking outside the box and makes you come up with really original ideas (since after 5 thumbnails you're kinda out of ideas and have to just try stuff out without thinking)
(this is a very concept art-y approach but it helps not being stuck in your head with indecision + visualising creative ideas way better)
thank you for the feedback! I did a TON of thumbnails for the actual outfit design that I didn't show in this video, so it makes complete sense to do the same for weapons/items. I took an online concept art class a couple years back and remember doing some weapon iterations before so i know i can do it! just need to find the time to go back and iterate some more!
Oh my god, I got this in my recommended and didn’t know what I was in for! The hair, the STYLE, the clothes?!!! All of them are spectacular! The sword’s color serving as a “stem” is such a creative idea ahhhhhhhhh!!!! Thank you for feeding my inspiration 🍓💕

I love when people bring up colors telling you about their characters' colors telling you something about their role in the story.
It's so cool to me, but at the same time my story's main antagonist is all white and pastel blue and pink. The most angelic little girl you've ever seen, but SO intimidating

This is so inspiring! I have a story I’ve been internally working on for years but rarely ever physically work on it in fear of getting frustrating that it’s not turning out how my mind sees it, but this truly inspires me to work on it more and do more physical art to be able to look back on
you can do it! I often feel the same way, but it's best to just start working on it and go from there! also, you can always go back and redraw things! (i do this all the time tbh)

silly lil thought for the pink flower on his hat. I once heard of a engineer who was tired of getting all his sharpies stolen/borrowed by his colleges so he bought a bunch of pink sharpies and swapped the pink lids onto his black sharpies to deter stealing. so maybe the hat flower is something like that.. in that it make sure HIS hat in particular isnt accidently grabbed by any one else after a scuffle.

Sure, in sketch phase there's always some "looseness" that you're bound to be missing once you clean things up and apply colours, but the fact that you went for various head angle and body angles for each one really brings some dynamism to the sheet, rather than having only front-facing poses and very similar angles.
