    You, drawing parallels between Star Wars and Halo, here one more: Halo theme is the Duel of Fates in this franchise.
    But the secret that Cortana was hiding wasn't Chief but rather the "Activation Index", that she had the capabilities of firing a Halo ring, a specific one: Installation 04. She had lured the Gravemind into a trap, outside the galaxy, where the only casualties were gonna be the Flood. Once Chief saw the ring, he understood her plan.

    Master Chief being lucky is also expressed in gameplay. Whenever you're running low on ammo and just happen to find a fresh weapon cache or an abandoned but fully functioning [insert vehicle here], that stuff canonically does happen to Master Chief all the time and is one of the attributing factors to the Chief being so lucky in-universe

      I read your comment and the first thing I thought of was something called ludonarrative dissonance. To nerd out a bit here, it's when a games' gameplay and the narrative don't match up. Eg. When your protag is a peaceful loving person in cutscenes but as soon as you take over you can kill people or something. Most commonly used example is Nico in GTA IV being really against killing people but then you get out into the sandbox and can blow people up with rocket launchers and literally just go on a killing spree. Your example is perfect at showing how Halo gets it right: by giving us a narrative device (John being lucky) and a gameplay device (frequent caches, the final segment of his health taking longer to go down than the rest of it, etc.) And bring it together perfectly to create a seamless experience. Sorry, nerd rant over

Stepping out of those side caves where I spawned and onto a lush beautiful landscape landscape flowing water, birds above, and the tower beams shooting up made it feel so real. I was taken away by how a video game could be this spectacular. Watching the water splash as you jumped in, the trees move as a warthog crashed into them, and seeing the guns get tossed as a grenade blows everything up was enough to hook me. And now, almost a decade and a half later, here I am still playing it, sobbing every time I see that halo rise up in the campaign or have Johnson tell me to kick Spark's ass.

    I always like to think that the "luck" Chief has is the fact that we, the player, are him. He never dies because we end up reverting to the last checkpoint, essentially making all his best bits the canon playthrough. It creates a synergy between him and us and makes us feel more badass as well. Also a lot of Cortana's lines are references to the books which is really cool, for example the line with Cortana saying "Could you sacrifice me to reach your goal? Could you watch me die?" Is a direct callback to The Fall of Reach (the first piece of Halo media to ever exist) where Halsey asks Cortana if she could sacrifice herself or the Chief to complete the mission.

    • @Razgriz_01
      @Razgriz_01 3 роки тому +8

      That thing with the last checkpoint and the luck being attributed to the fact that Master Chief is the players. In the lore, the Covenant believes that the "Demons" are resurrected after death, obviously a meta-nod to us restarting checkpoint when we die. Its really nice how the authors for the Halo books likes to implement game mechanics in some indirect way.

    Johnson and Chief have actually known each other since Chief was 15 years old, and had just become an active duty Spartan. This is shown in the book Halo: Silent Storm, and it’s really interesting looking at Halo CE-3’s narratives with that in mind.
    It’s also rather remarkable how Chief and the Arbiter managed to become friends by the end of Halo 3. Chief has spent his entire life since the age of 14 fighting the Covenant. He’s lost friends and family to them (family being the other Spartans since they were close enough to be family), and has also seen countless soldiers die fighting them. Not to mention the glassed worlds. So the fact he can put aside all that and work with and even become friends with a former member of the Covenant who is not only responsible for at least a billion human deaths (not exaggerating) but also the destruction of Reach (Thel ‘Vadam led the Fleet of Particular Justice, which has that previous 1 billion death total under it’s belt) is truly remarkable and just goes to show how good of a person Chief is. He may not forgive or forget, but he can see past a person’s past mistakes for who they are now.

      @@double1777 Taking anything the books say seriously is ridiculous for a number of reasons. For one, they're written by people following the release of the games, not before them. Take "Halo: First Strike," written in 2003 for example. If we were to take everything it said as canon, then John and Johnson saved Halsey on Reach just after the events of CE, while Cortana was up in orbit aboard a Covenant ship and learned that they (Covenant) somehow know about Earth and are already en-route to go glass it.
      And let's take "Silent Storm" for example. I haven't read it, 'nor do I care to go pay money to do so since it's written during the reign of 343. Especially since 343 considers "Halo: Forward Unto Dawn" canon, which takes place in 2526, coincidentally the same time period for both "First Strike" and this "Operation: Silent Storm." But considering that in "Forward Unto Dawn" Master Chief is wearing armor that looks eerily similar to Halo: Infinite armor, likely a precursor to it, then I'd say that 343 has no idea what they're doing since he should've been using Mark IV, the armor in Halo: CE, especially when you actually take Infinite into account itself. That game is a whole 'nother dumpster fire. So calm down mister "I've read the books," because the books don't mean anything.

    • @double1777
      @double1777 3 роки тому +1

      @@0WookieCookie0 Yeah First Strike is inconsistent with halo lore, not going to deny that. But I'm honestly confused as to what you're even angry about. I was simply pointing out that the Master Chief did fight the Covenant when he was fifteen canonically, not personally attacking the guy who replied to me. (Also First Strike takes place in 2552, right after CE, years after Silent Storm and Forward Unto Dawn. The armor Chief wears in CE is mark v, not mark IV, and the armor he wears in Forward Unto Dawn... yeah makes no sense. Probably a variant of mark IV. Also, Silent Storm and Forward Unto Dawn line up with each other. I'm not going to say you have to read the books, that would be disgraceful, but please don't say something makes no sense if you don't fully understand it.)
      Also, the books (most of them) are canon. They very well do mean something for Halo's lore and overall story.

    "SPARTANS never die"
    It's a running theme in the Halo setting that SPARTANS, of any generation, never die. They just go missing. The entirety of the SPARTAN-IIIs, all of the lost IIs, even the ORION volunteers as far as I know, all only missing. ONI wanted it to be part of their 'mythos' that they just did not die. Not sure if it carries on with the IVs but...gonna be honest I stopped following the story at about Reach.

      I believe the books comment on this and that after the war all the Spartans that went MIA were eventually reported KIA as it was only for moral during the war. Chief was the only one still listed as MIA as there was no proof he was dead.
      Though ONI did list him as KIA while trying to make Locke kill him (Locke ignored the order from the start, he never intended to actually shoot to kill the Chief even when he drew his pistol). This backfired on ONI super hard, and with the AI's rebelling, ONI is a shell of its former self.

As far as the Gravemind had known, Chief and the Arbiter's plan to take on the Flood could only be a direct fight, and so it was using Cortana to try and lure the two into a place - High Charity - where it could dispose of all three of them. With Cortana having confirmed for Chief that the Halo rings are still very much in play, she also confirmed the Gravemind's suspicions about how exactly Chief would finish the fight.

Late 2000s I feel was the golden age of AAA gaming and unfortunately we've seen a lot of big game studios bogged down in corporate meddling. "Keep your head down, there's two of us in here now, remember!?" Cortana said that in CE on the Pillar of Autum when you took too much damage.

    The original Halo trilogy was a huge part of my life. I remember playing through CE when I was 8 at launch with my dad, and loving the game. When Halo 2 was announced we both got excited for it. I remember taking a day off school to stay home and finish the game when we got to the final levels. It's one of those games that brought my dad and I together and something I hold near and dear to who I am as a person. When Halo 3 was announced, my dad got me a 360 just to play it.
    I wish we could have gone through 3 together before he died.

    Correction at 18:17 - the big secret was that Cortana still had possession of the activation index from the first Halo ring they fought on in Halo:CE. Now since the replacement for that Ring is being built on the Ark, Cortana’s plan is to activate the Ring to destroy the flood once and for all, and they’re outside of a radius that will harm other planets, humans, or other species. Full Circle.

    Just a fun little thing. The first time Cortana talks to Chief she say " Could you sacrifice me for the sake of the mission, could you watch me die" is the first thing Halsey asks Cortana when she chose Chief as her host spartan. I thought that was an interesting parallel because she immediately said yes to Halsey due to their safety being B priority vs the mission which is an A priority. Although we don't get Chiefs answer here he did leave her to finish the fight initially in halo 2. Later in halo 4 and 5 she asks Chief to figure out which of them is human making this a nice little Easter egg they put in to kind of kick it all off.

      More references to the fall of Reach Book: Some of the lines Cortana says in Cortana are what Halsey says to the Spartan II trainees right after they were abducted and began training, and in the big arena where the Cortana terminal is, her background dialogue is Halsey's side of the conversation she had with John when she first meets him at his school. Got to love the respect Bungie had for the lore they had already established

    5:40 Makes perfect sense, you ever played a really difficult game and tried to complete it failing over and over again? You're getting close to the end and you're emotional and losing it slightly at the thought of failing again and having to start over, you want to win and in the context of a video game, you'll put your character through hell, first time you go through it like it's no big deal.
    (I realise it's just a game, but as someone who prefers their own company, especially given how people are nowadays, I resonate more with digital landscapes and CGI people than I ever did with real people.)

    Cortana desperately prevented the Flood from finding out or the Gravemind would’ve fought hard against it and possibly destroyed Cortana to prevent it.

It was made as a peaceful gift, but things hit the fan, this involved a nervous grunt, gunfire, and the rise of Tartarus. But later on during the War, it was made to be less than peaceful as seen in Halo 3. (Though you may know this)
