  • The Inov-8 Mudtalon Speed is a lightweight trail-running shoe built for soft ground, with the 8mm lugs on its outside making it a great option for mud and fell runs. Nick has been using the shoe for plenty of muddy runs this winter, including an XC race, here’s what he makes of it.

I'm 60k in on my pair, and as a long time lover of the Terraultra > G260/70 I think inov8 have done a cracking job with this shoe in terms of fit and comfort. It will be very interesting to try the upcoming Trailflys, and future x-talon type shoes, which we have seen glimpses of in their new guises.

Very very nice with a review of a real trail shoe. This one is a buy for me, I love the Inov8 shoes and this one looks like a winner. Excellent grip and a hopefully a nice wide fit in the wide version. Perfect for winter, mud and orienteering runs

Maybe a little too niche for me but I like the direction Innov8 are going in. Hoping to see them release a Peregrine 13 type shoe soon

Yep, very good review - you got the points bang on - also a long term 210/212er, got a pair of these when they came out [with trepidation as if it wasn't right, what else would there be?] and indeed it felt like my 210's but 'upgraded' for comfort without losing the proprioception or ground feel but still felt agile. I'd get out to about eight/ten miles or so on the hill when you'd feel your feet getting a bit battered in the 210/212 but this gets you further without that feeling. Very pleased with them. Stick like poo to a blanket as well.

Nice review. Any comparisons to the Adidas Terrex Speed Pro SG?

tomharvey-run did a review of these & I asked him how they compared to the adidas speed pro sg, his response:
"ATSP-SG UK9: 232g, lower stack, firmer Lightstrike midsole, better drainage but more open mesh, narrower, precision fit, faster for shorter races, good lockdown.
I have taken them over 20 miles, good for more minimal running to help build strength in feet and lower leg.
IMTS UK9- 275g, wide, looser fit, softer midsole, more cushioned, prob not as fast and less racey, not as good lock down. Can take to longer distances as more cushioned. More aggressive lugs at 8mm, bit flappy and could do with a bit more of a rocker. Works well with extra volume for waterproof socks. Larger fit."

Will be interesting to see what Nick makes of the comparison! Seems the Terrex's are quicker and the Mudtalons are more versatile?...

I noticed Inov8 and other reviews called out "foot shaped" as if it was an innovative new feature, haven't shoes been foot shaped in the past?

Most running shoes used to be tapered towards the toe box. On the other hand, a 'foot shaped' shoe is less tapered. Imagine a torpedo vs a fan. Our feet are not torpedo shape. Years of running in these torpedo shaped shoes since young have given me bunionettes and deformities to my little toes. It's good to see shoe companies offering more naturally shaped shoes nowadays.

The toe box of these reminds me of Crocs, which while comfortable, aren't designed for speed or precision. I'm happy to be proven wrong but these look a bit flappy/clumsy for me...

@@chinyong8166shoes don’t cause bunions or bunionettes; they are caused by poor biomechanics which you inherit (it’s your anatomy that’s causes it, not the shoes).
