In the new era of politics, the psychological manipulation of voters is seen as more expedient than offering and driving solutions for citizens' core issues. In Social Media's stupor, the truth seems to be freely opposed, devalued, or at best ignored. To win public office today, performance politics and tugging on constituents' emotional strings are increasingly more powerful tools than offering field expertise and policy solutions. This unmooring from reality is contagious, numbing, and self-sustaining; it is the biggest threat to our democracy.
In a wide-ranging and timely conversation with Jonathan Lemire, world-renowned forensic psychiatrist Dr. Bandy Lee shares insights on the importance of mental fitness in candidates and also the collective mental health of their core supporters. Dr. Lee points out the ineffectiveness of traditional methods of fighting misinformation and emphasizes the crucial role politically unaffiliated, neutral mental health professionals could play in explaining the mass psychosis and mitigating its growth. She also offers guidance on how we can all contribute to restoring faith in democratic institutions and in truth.

As an attorney and Constitutional scholar I support Dr. Lee's legal obligation to warn citizens and the voting public of a danger she recognizes under the Tarasoff doctrine. She is a gift to us and we need to listen and honor her.
Yes, the initial concern brought to Washington, was not political, yet obviously would effect a politician.

06/2024 Dr.Bandy Lee warning was diverted and suppressed, initially by Allan Dershowitz complaint to Yale University followed by the APA, resulting in advancing a campaign against democracy.
At the time, it was considered hyperbolic that our entire judicial system and government was the target.
Over the past few years, Europe and members of NATO have begun to reorganize their security planning without America support. They feel they have plan realistically, given the impact trump and the Republican/Maga has had globally. Fiona Hill has participated in the think tanks.
They don't exclude America and will protect America, but are not safe to rely on us, their geological proximity
to Putin, what they feel they are addressing is, coordinating of a reorganization of a new world order.
The key is to protect democracy.

The APA and Psychiatry in general has built a citadel like all citadels, a priesthood, if you will, that assumes all knowledge unto itself. The APA should be about education.

Yale University and APA failure to support a call to protect society, is paramount to our current battle to protect democracy.

These are not facts; they are opinions. Most are taken out of context. She considers an authority on someone she has never treated. She is breaking one of the most foundational components of our government: we are innocent until proven guilty. Trump told the protesters on Jan. 6 to exercise peacefully they political right to protest. Instead she choses to mindread, one of the tendencies of many mentally unhealthy people. Instead of seeing he calmed Korean down, she sees him as almost causing a nuclear war. He prevented a nuclear war.
Are these people who diagnosis from a distance also deeply studying Obama, Hilary and Bill, Nancy Pelosi, etc. Fair is fair. Who is President now because any rational person has to doubt Biden is? Most of our leaders may well be narcissists.
Trump has his faults, but me thinks you protest too much.

This and MANY more discussions with Dr. Lee and her fellow experts are crucial informative truths that the American public ought to be receiving throughout the days and nights on mainstream TV on CNN, MSNBC, and other channels. We should not continue to accept that we all deserve to be burdened with putting up with this pathology rather than being offered the truth.

A most interesting, important discussion. I hope that this is broadcast more widely so that people can be better informed on the serious issues that were raised. I have been curious, since 2016, about how millions of people can be "hypnotised" to the point where many of them sound totally deranged and delusional. If I had the opportunity, I would ask "what effect, if any, might the calm, tranquil music and the deliberate change in Trump's voice where he speaks in a soft, almost monotone voice at a particular point in his rallies, might have on the people in the crowd?" I've heard this a couple of times and it sounds creepy, deliberate and manipulative. I am so glad that I chanced upon this interview; thank you.
Indeed! Trump is a self taught hypnotist of considerable skill. Did you know used to keep an English translation of all of the speeches of Adolph Hitler at his bedside? Trump uses many of the tools of mass communication to remarkably good effect. Yes he’s a complete tool, but he certainly knows how a thing or two about how to capture a crowd.

It seems to be another manifestation of an epistemic crisis. The success of the modern world is based on disciplinarity, specialization and professional siloization. By requiring knowledge and practice ‘stick to its lane’, wider consequences and a holistic perspective are silenced. It is why psychological pathology can remain undiagnosed in political leaders, why atmospheric pollution is an environmental, but not economic issue. Etc.

I have a duty to warn
Education is always a good thing. Repression of education not so much. Often, healing requires education. Somewhere, we've lost the connection. Psychiatry was never a priesthood, but all too many fields of endeavor have become priesthoods. People are capable of understanding and it does absolutely no one any good to withhold knowledge for political reasons. When healers become priests who hold the power and the sacred knowledge, health becomes nothing more than a power game.
Obliged--in civil society -- to warn of ANY danger:fire,gun,thief,danger, rape,murder, flood,avalanche,etc.#2,anyone can observe,no diagnosis needed:)
We must be careful that we don't comitt any thought crimes.
Candidates should submit a mental fitness test with the required number of signatures when they apply to be on a state primary.
Does this discussion imply that this nation has some ~100million narcissistically wounded citizens who need a cult leader to nurse their sense of self worth?
That would be our number one treat to national security.
Education is key, but its failure is that psychologist/psychiatrists have not taught us how to protect our own minds. We clearly have "back doors" to our minds that can be used by sick and nefarious individuals to victimize us. We need to learn how to detect and defend our own minds from attack.

I don’t get it. Dr. Lee is right in front of us, with expertise that given a larger platform and acknowledgement by a media that features celebrities rather than career experts is so frustrating. We, the public have no idea what is happening behind scenes to prevent Dr. Lee’s voice from being heard. Dr. Fauci is a true go to with his history and respect in the area of infectious disease. I would say Dr. Lee is the equivalent in her field. I watch MSNBC and Nicolle Wallace, Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, Ali Velshi and Lawrence O’Donnell are my go to’s. NW recently ended a segment, almost as an afterthought with a comment that she could use an expert in mental health. Who does MSNBC turn to? George Conway (lawyer) and Mary Trump (trained psychologist and family member). Both are important worth their backgrounds and experience, but they cannot replace Dr. Lee and her colleagues whose sole purpose is to address the dangerous decline of our society’s public health!!! Get her out there for more people to hear! Please!

Trump has a feral instinct toward control and power dominance as a unique kind of intelligence; however, he is not brilliant or well educated so those in his political support base such as Bannon, Manifort, Stone, Miller, etc., and have ushered Trump through the political process because he was already a known public figure who had glamor and name appeal that they could manipulate on the American political scene.

I would respectfully disagree; her "claims" are not unspecified - she was very specific about examples to support her professional judgements. I'm not sure what you mean by "legal basis" - all that the Doctor discussed is either public knowledge or a psychiatric/ scientific/medical fact. Calling this "unethical" is, as is your comment that "nobody takes her seriously" simply a subjective personal perspective. My personal perspective is that this conversation is important and one that all people should have access to, in order to make their own informed opinion.

If you want to have legal action in place for psychological reasons you need water proof evidence. No fuzzy or warm feelings - REAL facts which can be used in a court of law.
