This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill-the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill-you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the fox hole goes.

    "Are they a one-off-thing?"
Clearly no! BABYMETAL are around since 2010 when the three girls were 11 and 12 years old. They originally were part of the school-themed idol-project Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossom Academy) but they parted from SG in 2013 to become an independent act. Back then the band mainly consisted of three girls: Suzuka Nakamoto (aka. SU-METAL, lead vocals) Yui Mizuno (aka. YUIMETAL, backing vocals and dance) and Moa Kikuchi (aka. MOAMETAL, backing vocals and dance) complemented by a bunch of stellar musicians called Kami-Band (Band of Gods) at their live performances.
BABYMETAL already have five albums out:
    *BABYMETAL*, rel. 2014 (studio album)
*Live at Budokan - Red Night Apocalypse*, rel. 2014 (live album)
*Metal Resistance*, rel. 2016 (studio album)
*Live at Wembley*, rel. 2016 (live album)
*Metal Galaxy*, rel. 2019 (studio album)
They also have several live recorded shows out on DVD/Blu-Ray which is a good thing because, believe it or not, they are one of the best live bands out there (which earned them many best-live-act-awards). They also never get boring because of their diversity in music styles. Regardless they always manage to stay recognizable. Unfortunately, Mikio Fujioka (their lead guitarist) died from an accident in January 2018 and Yui Mizuno left BABYMETAL in fall 2018 because of health reasons. But despite all that, the band is going strong and achieved, as first Asian act ever, a number one notation at the billboard rock charts with their recently released album "Metal Galaxy".
Next reaction maybe BABYMETAL "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" live at Sonisphere Festival 2014 in the UK? ua-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/v-deo.html

    BABYMETAL - Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL)
One of their best live performances and their first live performance outside japan. This video makes me nearly cry.
BABYMETAL - HEADBANGER - Live (Makuhari Messe) HD
BABYMETAL - Catch Me If You Can「かくれんぼ」Full Live compilation
One of their cutest songs and super hard at the same time. One of my faves.
BABYMETAL - メギツネ - MEGITSUNE (OFFICIAL)
One of the few official videos that is better than live.
BABYMETAL - Onedari Daisakusen - Live (Makuhari Messe) HD
'Black' Babymetal song. With only the two girls. It's their version of Limp Bizkit and it's ridiculously cute.
    BABYMETAL - AKATSUKI紅月アカツキ [Blu-ray]👍revision(ブルーレイ再編集バージョン) Pー9
Akatsuki is straight up their most beautiful song. SU only.
I know it seems impossible but they have a whole bunch of songs as good or better than Gimme Chocolate. It was hard to only recommend 6. You just watched 'Enter Sandman' and are asking for Metallica recommendations.

Its classed as Kawaii metal (Cute metal) . girls are 16-14 yo Japanese girls. They have already played the giant metal festivals in UK Europe and US. Their material is very diverse. try Road Of Resistance, and Karate, studio clip as well as Live at Download version. Also try Headbanger live legend 1997 version. Insane backing band called The Kami (God) Band. their shows are full tilt and all are choreographed immaculately.

As you can see they've had quite a few variations, though it's been quite a while since they had red tulle skirts like the ones in this 2013 concert.
Although they started off with something like a Goth Lolita style, they've progressed through various stages of their "battle dress" over the years.

Just a small correction on the ages of the girls. They started out (very low-key) in 2010 when two of them were 10/11 years, and the older one was about 12/13. In this particular video (around 2014) they are about 14/15 and 16/17.
One of the girls has left the Band midway through 2018 (although being absent due to sickness at the end of 2017), and is being replaced (since 2019) in a alternating rotating position between three other girls (aged 15, 16 and 21). The two current permanent members that stayed are like 20 and 22 as of now. Also, in 2018 (during the absence of that one member and before the three rotating/alternating girl ) they had anything from 4 to 7 Girls on stage, depending on the Song and Show.
Now, about the Band : from 2010 to 2013, they did not have a Live Band, all Music was pre-recorded. In 2014, some songs did have a real Band performing, but not all of them. But, from 2015 and onwards, all songs had the Band performing live, who rotate/switch members because they all have their side projects. In the 2019 USA tour, the all Japanese band was switched completely for other members (probably just temporarily). Also, one of the original band members died in early 2018.
Another thing, the main/older girl did always do Live singing, but the two younger Girls only started to sing Live (or scream as they say) at around 2014/2015.

@ALex B.e Your ranges are right.
Su was 12 when Sakura Gakuin/BABYMETAL started.
Yui and Moa officially "transferred in" when they were 11, although they had been rehearsing with the whole group from the beginning.
'Gimme Chocolate!!' was filmed at 'Legend 1997'.
Su had just turned 16 the day before, Yui and Moa were both 14.
Your ages for the three avengers are right on.
Kano Fujihira is 15 (although she was just 14 when she first appeared with BABYMETAL).
Momoko Okazaki is 16, and Riho Sayashi is 21.

Haha, that was entertaining. I wasn't sure whether you were shaking your head in rhythm with the music or in disbelief. :-) And I loved the "hang on, I'm not ready for this" as well. The question whether it's all like that is not easy to answer. If you want to know whether all songs sound like this one, the answer would be no. Their catalogue offers a wide spectrum, every song is different. They are all somewhere between Metal and J-Pop, sometimes more on one side, sometimes more on the other. But often they also incorporate other genres as well, you'll find influences of EDM, Reggae, Ska, Waltz, Dubstep...
But if you are asking whether they are always as interesting, entertaining, unique and uplifting like this, the answer would be yes. The extent to which they make this fusion of genres work is mind-boggling. You'd think this couldn't (or even shouldn't) work, but they just manage to make it. And the result is the most entertaining music and band I have ever heard in my life. They have just recently released their third album, and even after having listened to the first two on a daily basis for about 2.5 years, I've had my fair share of WTF moments listening to it. They just never get old.
More good news for you: You haven't even seen the best yet, which is a true live performance. I hope you'll share that one with us as well. My recommendation would be the song "Headbanger": ua-cam.com/video/P9miB6jKLRw/v-deo.html
Many people are calling them a gimmick and resist any attempt to get educated about how wrong they are. But I'm pretty sure from this video that you are open minded enough to get it. Once you have seen a live show, you'll recognize all the talent behind it on many levels and be proven that they are far more than that.

    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 🍫 💝️
The members themselves are very aware that their initial impression is often "WTF?".
They compare that to what they first thought when they were introduced to metal.
"BABYMETAL" refers to a "new born genre of metal", not the members ages like some people guess.
Also, "heavy" and "baby" rhyme in Japanese, and are written very similarly.
ヘビメタル = Hebimetaru = Heavy Metal
    ベビメタル = Bebimetaru = Babymetal
Even though the whole concept is the combination of JPop/Idol and Metal, this is definitely one of their most pop songs.
That blast beat still gets you though. And the whole thing is about 10x heavier live.
They have been joined on stage for this one by members of Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and DragonForce.
Not all at the same time of course. : )
Don't worry about their songs all sounding the same. This is a group with a crazy amount of variety.

Hello Patrol! BABYMETAL is the creation of a man named Key Kobayashi (aka Koba-metal). He was a producer for a Japanese TV idol group called Sakura Gakuin (the girls attend a "school" and perform in various musical clubs) and is an avid metal head. He wanted to use the popular Idol culture to bring metal music back into popularity. In 2010, he took Sazuka Nakamoto (aka Su-metal), whose voice he thought would work well with metal music, added Yui Mizuno (aka Yui-metal) and Moa Kikuchi (aka Moa-metal) as dancers and kakegou (chant) leaders, and formed a heavy metal club within Sakura Gakuin. Several years later (in 2012 I believe) Su-metal graduated from Sakura Gakuin and the heavy metal club officially became it's own group: BABYMETAL. The name is play on words; by adding a voicing marker to the "heh" sound in Japanese, you say "beh". Therefore, baby (pronounced as beh-bee) is a play on the word "heavy". Also, Koba-metal saw the group as the beginning of a new genre in metal music (dance metal, or more often referred to as "kawaii" [cute in Japanese] metal). Lastly, he created a lore that said the girls were chosen by the Fox god to battle the idol culture and bring metal music back to Japan; that is why you will see some comments saying "The Fox god will be pleased," etc. The group has strong fan following and just finished their US tour last fall, ending with a head-lining performance at the Forum in Los Angeles (their first arena concert in the US). They are about to begin their European tour in February (most of the shows are sold out save one performance in England I believe).
Anyway, I will save more for later! I highly recommend Karate next!

@Steven Colenso Lots of good info.
Suzuka actually graduated from Sakura Gakuin in March of 2013.
Her senior year was the 2012 Nendo, so that can be a little confusing.
Also, there's no hyphen in Yuimetal or Moametal.
Su-metal has one in her stage name to indicate the long "u" sound.

Good first reaction, Babymetal do come as a shock (especially when people point you to 'Gimme Chocolate' for your first time seeing and hearing them).
You wondered early on if Babymetal was the band or the genre ... it is both. A part of why they are named Babymetal is because they were giving birth to a new genre of metal fusing good, hard metal instrumentation with Jpop style vocals. This is not pop music with distorted guitars added - that has been tried many times before and never lasts because it just isn't very good. This is metal played by (as Rob Halford of Judas Priest described them) "top notch musicians", the very best Japan has to offer, and fronted by a hugely talented young female vocalist with two talented dancers and singers who all have a background in the Japanese Idol system.
As such Babymetal are unique, you won't have seen or heard anything quite like them and those who have tried to do what they do have all fallen short of the mark. Nobody can really put their finger on what they do or why it is so good, but it has involved a whole lot of top talent in every aspect and very hard work.
Babymetal now have 3 studio albums and you will struggle to find two songs that sound the same, so in answer to another of your thoughts, no it is not all like that and it is never "samey". They play virtually every metal genre (thrash, speed, power, black, death, folk, nu, pirate, prog etc) but blend in many other musical genres (ska, reggae, pop, EDM, dub step, swing, hip hop, Bollywood, Latin, Japanese folk and who knows what else) ... and they may even mix more than one of those into one song when you least expect it. Somehow they make it work every time.
Babymetal are first and foremost a live performance act. You could listen to their albums but it would be something like listening to the sound track of a movie you've never seen and where you don't have a clue what the plot is. They need to be seen playing live, not only for the visuals of the choreo and the show - they also sound better live with the skills and precision of the Kami Band supporting them, for the magic of Su's natural voice without the processing and compression of the studio and for the charm of Yui and Moa (now Moa plus one of 3 'Avengers') engaging the audience and making them a part of the performance.
Personally I'd recommend 'Megitsune' for your next song, but for a live spectacle 'Road of Resistance' live in Japan is what most fans will point you towards - and for good reason. Their whole catalogue is worth seeing and hearing though, especially good live pro-shot videos (avoid compilations if you possibly can).

Thanks for the fun video. By the way, I did not count how many times you said "I have no idea". And I can understand your feelings well. This is a fusion of Japanese idol culture and metal and sublimated into a new genre. I am a metal head and still an old school student. So when I saw the birth of a new genre, I was very shocked. You should next witness Road of resistance live in Japan.

Babymetal is internationally the most famous Japanese Band in the world. Ron Halford called them the "Monster Ladies of Metal".They have toured with Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Lady Gaga. The Ladies have performed professionally since the age 5. They will be touring in Europe (again) Starting in February. Their international break out was Sonisphere 2014 when they were 16 and 14 yo.
In a bit we'll request another Japanese band you won't believe.

The name of the band "BABYMETAL" (Bebimetaru) comes from the words "baby" (beibi) and "heavy metal" (hebi metaru). The correct pronunciation rhymes with "heavy metal", i.e. no emphasis on the first a as in "baby". However, the band do not strictly enforce this, and most native English speakers still pronounce the name as baby metal.

Thanks for choosing to react to BABYMETAL, they're amazing! As someone who is new to the group, I thought I'd give you and your followers a little background on them.
BABYMETAL is a Japanese Kawaii Metal group consisting of (for the most part) SU-METAL on lead vocals, YUIMETAL and MOAMETAL on backing vocals/dancing, or "SCREAM AND DANCE" as they like to call it. I say 'for the most part' as Yui & Moa have a few songs that they do as duets without Su and Su has a few songs she does as solos whilst Yui & Moa take a well deserved break.
They were formed in 2010 as part of the idol group Sakura Gakuin, before touring on their own in 2011 and have gone from strength to strength.
They started singing to backing tracks with actors in skeleton suits pretending to play instruments (known as BABYBONES) but soon incorporated the Kami Band into their concerts, bringing them in full time at the end of 2013. The Kami Band consists of some of Japan's premier musicians on rotation based on availability. The most popular configuration consisting of Takayoshi Ohmura and Mikio Fujioka on guitar with Leda Cygnus as stand-in, BOH on bass and Aoyama Hideki on drums. These are the people you will see most often in videos. Since the untimely passing of Mikio at the end of 2017 they have enlisted the talents of Isao Fujita on guitar. At the end of 2018 YUIMETAL left the band because of health problems and in 2019 there are 3 girls named AVENGERS that will take her place in a rotating manner.
Below is a list of some of their best performances that I hope you will consider for future reactions. Should you decide to do more BABYMETAL reactions in the future, you should be aware that UA-cam will block almost all videos that incorporate audio. The best way round this is to mute the video and provide a link that we can open in a new window and sync with yours. Just give us a countdown before you start playing it. The BABYMETAL fandom is very used to this way of doing things.

Glad to see you interested in BABYMETAL. I recommend the song "Road of Resistance" to be next. ua-cam.com/video/zTEYUFgLveY/v-deo.html (The guitars for this song were arranged by Herman Lee and Sam Totman of Dragonforce.) All BABYMETAL song are child friendly BTW.
BABYMETAL are the biggest metal group from Japan. Since 2014, they have become a worldwide phenomenon (they've been together since 2010). They just got off their 4th US tour this September with AVATAR as support. They've also previously supported The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Guns N Roses, Stone Sour, and Korn on their respected tours. Also collaborated with Rob Halford of Judas Priest by performing "Painkiller" & "Breaking the Law" together on stage in Ohio.
The three girls names are Suzuka Nakamoto 22 (Su-Metal, lead singer), Yui Mizuno 20(Yuimetal, scream & dance on the left, no longer with the band), and Moa Kikuchi 20 (Moametal, scream & dance on the right). The other band members are Takayoshi Ohmura (Guitar), Leda (Guitar), ISAO (Guitar), Mikio Fujioka (Guitar, RIP passed away in January 2018), BOH (Bass), Hideki Aoyama (Drums). Their genre of music, they pioneered, is called "Kawaii Metal" (Kawaii meaning cute in Japanese). It's a fusion of Japanese Pop and Heavy Metal.
They started performing at very young ages (Su was only 5yo). BABYMETAL formed as part of an idol group (Sakura Gakuin) originally in 2010 when the girls were 11, 11, and 12. In 2013, the main singer became too old for the idol group and had to "graduate" out of the group. BUT, their manager/creator of the group (Key Kobayashi aka Koba-Metal) saw its huge potential, and he decided to turn the group into a real band to keep the original members together forever. That's also the year they gained new members of the band called the Kami Band (God Band). Made up of some of the best musicians in the world (which takes there live shows into the realm of legend).
BABYMETAL became really popular, and by the end of 2014 were a worldwide phenomenon. Their popularity is still growing and shows no sign of stopping. Multiple world tours and have sold out arenas (even played live on US national television on the Colbert Late Show in 2016).
One of the core members, YUIMETAL (Yui Mizuno) left the group in Oct 2018 after a long 1 year absence from the band due to health reasons. The core members now consist of just Su and Moa as a duo. They have 3 rotating dancers (avengers) that fill in the empty 3rd position during live shows. They are Riho Sayashi (former member of Morning Musume), Kano Fujihira (Member of Sakura Gakuin), and Momoko Okazaki (former member of Sakura Gakuin).
They've toured all over the world, have won countless music awards all over the world (Metal Hammer Magazine even named their debut self-titled album "Best Metal Album of the 21st Century"), and have opened for The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lady GaGa, Metallica, Guns N Roses, Korn, Stone Sour, and have shared the stage with Rob Halford of Judas Priest, and Dragonforce. All have signed off and credited BABYMETAL as being a legit/talented band.
Their new album METAL GALAXY came out Oct 11th. On it, they are collaborating with Joakim Brodén from Sabaton, Tim Henson and Scott LePage from Polyphia, and Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy. So far it has been the #1 rock album in its debut week on Billboard (first Asian act to ever do that). Reached 13 on the Billboard 200 in the US (Highest any Japanese band has ever charted). Reached 19 on UK Top 40 Official charts.
