I love your videos , just amazing
Thank you so much!
Enjoy your videos hope to join you on one of your adventures someday also from Houston area
Houston isn’t the best for paddling but we always have water! Haha one of the advantages to our climate
Bought a GoPro 5 a while back and it looked like trash, even when i messed with manual settings. took it back... i may have to try again soon! Thanks! Also, that spot looks amazing!
Although the Hero 5 is a pretty forgettable GoPro, you can get a great image out of it. I'd recommend going for at least the 7 black.
You've got a killer channel Gatewood. Really appreciate they way your share/teach and the film making is top notch.
I really appreciate that Robert! It’s been so fun and comments like yours make my day. Always glad to disseminate info about the sport
Great video Gatewood.
Hey thanks dirt dobber! Great to hear from you as well, hope you and the guys are doing well up in NC.
Awesome video👍🏻
Thanks Braden!
Great information Gatewood!
Thanks KW! I just started talking and by the end of it I realized that wow, I have a lot to say about dry bags haha
Totally thought this was the dry bag video, oops! My bad haha
Your videos are always so crisp. You have your settings nailed down.
I appreciate that! It took some time but I feel good with where they are at for now. The drone footage is very tough to get right but it'll suffice for now.
Great Video!!
Thanks, Pete!
Wow Amazing Place...
It’s very underrated. 30min from the city and no one vet goes out there
Thanks for the Q & A. Very interesting. Looking forward to more of you awesome videos.
My pleasure, Tom! Glad to see you always watching and commenting. Hope you had a good New Years!
Greate video . I set my Phantom 4 Pro camera the same , most of the time 3 - (down) and ISO 100 to 200 .
Thanks Spencer! Yessir the lower the ISO the better
That’s such amazing place I need to check that place out 👍😊
It's epic! A different kind of mystique compared to the hill country, but still full of paddling opportunities in its own right.
Man that's one crystal clear video amigo! I'll be down in Texas end of this month, I have a friend with a ranch near Madisonville, I'll be doin some fishin and wild boar huntin..
Great video !👋😎👍
Thanks C! Risked it and brought the big rig out on the kayak lol. Have fun out in Madisonville, very pretty out that direction. Make sure to stop by Buccees if you haven't already. Quite the spectacle haha
@@GatewoodBrown yes sir! Buccees is pretty cool, we stop by everytime! Where else can ya buy 25 types of jerky and Texas memorabilia! Lol..
😎👍
I noticed that you and the crew are in sit in yaks. Would a sit on top be able to take on some of the beginner rivers
yavez791 great question. I actually have plans to get into a sit on top for my next kayak. I’m just getting tired of bilging water out of the sit in. So I definitely recommend either kayak depending on what kind of water you’ll be paddling.
@@GatewoodBrown well I'm use to the lakes and calm creeks. I might hit up the Brazos sometime. I want to start calm before I hit up the rapids. Thanks for the great vids. You really have me wanting to kayak some challenging rivers. Keep up the great work. Those UA-cam checks will get bigger.
The only way to learn rapids is to send it! Haha yeah you’re smart to start on flat water and learn paddle strokes etc. what checks? So far UA-cam has paid me $0 lol. Maybe one day!
Great video Gatewood. I really enjoy your videos. That was great advice you gave the beginner paddler. I love paddling in a Cyprus swamp as well. I paddle one about 30 minutes from my home over in the Cheraw State Park in Cheraw SC.
Thanks for always tuning in Anthony! Time in the seat has been the most beneficial to me, always cool to see people drawn to the sport as well. SC has some amazing cypress swamps! They have a certain beauty to them
Thanks for the shout out and tips. I don't know when I'll be able to make my next video due to working on fires but I can't wait to do some new stuff with your tips. Thanks again Gatewood.
You’re a day 1 Justin! Your question will help a bunch of people since that’s a routine inquiry. Hope you guys find some fire relief soon. So hard to watch!
Well thankfully personnel from the US and Canada are streaming into the country here. We will be OK. It came a bit close to home yesterday!
@@AllThingsOutdoors I'm glad folks from other countries are coming in to help. We see it all over social media so that is one great thing about modern times. Ability to spread the word about natural disasters.
Great video! Avid Central TX / Hill Country Kayaker
Thanks Dustin! The hill country has our favorite places to paddle (when there’s water lol)
Thanks so much for the great & thorough answer with example clips (and the shout-out)!! Busted out laughing when you got stuck!! Can't wait for the camera setup video!! 👍🏼👊🏼
My pleasure! Thank you for participating and giving me something to talk about haha. The camera set up should be helpful for a lot of people! Thanks again for always showing up to watch and comment
Thank you this is really helpful :-)
It's my absolute pleasure! Hopefully I can do more Q&A videos soon.
What type of Kayak are you using in this cypress swamp video?
That’s an ascend h10. Kind of like a canoe kayak hybrid but leans more towards being a kayak.
OK thank you!
Great video, GB! I wanted to do some fall trips, but lack of rain thwarted that. Looking forward to some spring trips!
Gah isn’t it crazy how dry it is out there?? Here’s to hoping some rain fills up our rivers. Great to hear from you!
Gonna be out there July 11th kayaking and camping with the family!!! Cant wait! Also wondering if you have ever done the Colorado river between La Grange and Columbus. Or the th Trinity, up east of Cleveland down to Kenefick.
Very nice! Charlotte lake is a wonderful spot. I’ve never done the Colorado or trinity as I typically shoot for rivers with rapids instead of flatwater. I’m lazy and don’t like to paddle much haha, so the hill country suits me best. When it has water...
Is lake Charlotte saltwater or freshwater?
It is all freshwater that flows in from the trinity river when it gets high. Most of the lake is a couple feet deep at most.
Gatewood Brown thanks man. I’ll check it out
Do it! Access is super easy and the boat launch is nice. The scenery is great too. Call ahead and make sure the county parks are open
Gatewood Brown sounds good. I enjoy kayaking and also enjoy fishing. So I’ll go and enjoy the scenery and see if I can get lucky on some fish!
Awesome vid! Thanks for answering my question! And thanks for giving us an insight to you and your channel! 🤙🏼Congratulations on the engagement 🎉
My pleasure Stephen! I really appreciate your participation. Big things to come in 2020! Also, thanks for the kind words about the engagement, we are certainly excited.
ive never kayaked before but after watching a few of your videos you’ve definitely have made me want to buy one and go out looking around texas. & hopefully get some of the boys in to it also haha. 🤙🏼
You can pick up kayaks for a great deal on the used market. I'd recommend doing that and checking out some local spots before traveling. So much freedom out on the water!
This is my channel, had to subscribe brother thanks for the help.
Right on man! I enjoyed the chat. Can't wait to hear how your trip goes
Just found your channel and am enjoying working though your videos. It caught my attention when it said you were from Texas. Houston no less. I’m an old guy from Houston who is learning to use his solo canoes (Bell Rockstar in Royalex and Mad River Slipper in Kevlar). Never tried a kayak but I can’t sit that low with my legs out. I also prefer a canoe paddle to a kayak paddle. Why am I here? Except for the whitewater, everything applies. Thanks for the tip about Charlotte Lake. Anything close on the west side of Houston?
Hey George thanks for tuning in! Maybe try the sit on top kayaks with lounge seats. They’re very comfortable and may suit your idea of a kayak. Hmm, the buffalo bayou, brazos river and Colorado are the only west Houston places I can think of. The cypress forests of east Houston are worth it!
Gatewood Brown I have a weekend place on Dickinson Bayou so that is where I canoe. Wind can sometimes be a problem not to mention ski boats and jet skis. I have tried Armand Bayou.
Will you ever go kayak the rio grande river in Big bend national park?? Like the Santa Elena canyon & the other canyons the river flows through???
Yes 1000%!! We have some routes mapped out. Just need to find a time that works for our group and we will absolutely do it. I’ve got some regular kayak camping routes as well as a few packrafting routes. The canyons look amazing
REALLY ENJOY all your kayaking video. I'm a 57 year old kayaking freak, love nature more than anything well except for my hubby :).
We are from western region of texas. They only river we have yanked is the small one feeding Mineral Wells lake, a small one feeding Lake Spence. These are flat water. Haven't talked my husband into paddle Rapids but I'm a water daredevil & would love to try it.
We had a question, have you ever ran into a gator while paddling lakes like the Cypress and others around your area of Texas? One more, for beginners wanting to try out rapids, where would you suggest going?
Hey thanks! Keep on paddle for as long as you can. Age is just a number! God bless!!
No gator encounters just yet! I’d recommend a big river like the brazos or Colorado somewhere in the hull country. Rapids will be tame and are good to practice on. Thanks for watching the videos!!
You ever do any of the bayous or creeks down here in houston
Hey David! I do the buffalo bayou on occasion but it’s kinda nasty. I’ll usually go mess around at the lake in this video, a few bayous run into it so you can find moving water if that’s what you’re going for
@@GatewoodBrown was gonna start doing more local this year. I hate how murky it is. Also snakes and gators are mean
@@davidkarr9952 If you have to go the Bayou is ok. Snakes seem to be everywhere in TX though, I had a water moccasin chasing me in the Upper Guadalupe one time lol
I really love how you shoot video and awesome editing. I like watching you because you are in Texas and I'm originally from Texas. I hope to move back someday and do some exploring like you do. I know you are from Kentucky, but you been in Texas longer and now your are a Texan. I love the videos and keep moving forward. Maybe someday we could meet up for an adventure. Have a wonderful afternoon my friend.
Thanks for the kind words BF! It's always cool to see people like you enjoying the content and reminding you of your home. Yeah, I definitely consider myself a Texan since we've spent most of our life here. That would be cool! Have a wonderful afternoon as well, take care.
How are you supporting your Sony on the kayak?
I had it mounted to my DJI ronin S gimbal, then strapped it to one of the cross beams on my kayak. Very risky but it turned out well!
@@GatewoodBrown haha very risky. It looked great though!
I'm in Tomball, north Houston. Where is that swamp you shot this video in?
And keep shooting the awesome videos!
Hey! It’s over in Wallisville, called lake Charlotte. Definitely a fun place to explore
@@GatewoodBrown Fantastic! Thanks for the reply. It's now on my list.
Know any spots within a couple hour drive of Dallas?
Sorry just got to that part where you answer this
Take care
For sure man! To east you have lots of lakes and to the west you’ve got some good rivers. Brazos all up and down it should be good for you
Gatewood Brown Appreciate it
Brazos definitely looks like a doable day trip
What part of KY are you originally from?? Boone county native here 👋🏻
From Louisville but when we moved down to TX we would go back to Versailles/Lexington! Never spent much time in Boone county though
Thanks.. I dig your content and the videos our beautiful.. lets collab, you could teach a old guy to kayak.. hill country👍😁
Thanks PS! Had a nice chuckle at your most recent video about gym styles. So spot on haha. It’ll be tough to collab unless we see some rain but I’m down!
2020 is here! What rivers are you all going to paddle this year?
Llano and buffalo already scheduled
Right on! We did the llano last weekend. Which section?
@@GatewoodBrown we only do mason, tx. 3rd year in a row
@@davidkarr9952 That's the only section we've done too. Which crossings do you all go to?
@@GatewoodBrown 1871 to simonsville
Do you know any places on the sabine or Angelina rivers in east tx?
I’ve got my eye on the Angelina below Sam Rayburn. Supposedly they have primitive camp spots maintained by the Corp back in there
What’s your favorite spot to kayak camp back in Kentucky? @gatewoodbrown
Not sure! I’ve never been but a guy named backpacking with Jason just did a cool kayak camping trip and filmed it. Check out his channel for the video
❤
Is that an ascend h10/h12?
You got it. Ascend H10 in grey color
Gatewood Brown thanks. I was debating on getting that or the h12. I saw it in your other videos too 👍🏻
What paddle is that?
Win Rodriguez it’s a No Limits by Magellan fiberglass paddle. I think it has been discontinued which is a shame because it’s the best budget paddle I’ve ever used. It’s on the shorter side but very stiff and durable. I paid about $80 for it at Academy sports.
Gatewood Brown i was talking about the one seen in the video at 0:25 in the beginning looks like it had a carbon shaft
@@campbells20042003 Oh my bad! The one I'm using in this video is the Ascend Tournament Kayak Paddle ($80). It's very long and the blade is pretty flexible so I do not recommend it. The shaft is stiff but I'd say definitely get a paddle that has a solid blade so you move more water with each stroke. It'll give you better control of the boat too. If you're in to carbon paddles, I recommend the RPC3 Adventure Tour paddle ($260). That's the one I used in North Carolina on our packrafting trip, best paddle I've ever used, hands down. It's a very good deal compared to other carbon paddles.
@@GatewoodBrown Thanks for the quick replies! I binge-watched all your videos last night. think that'd be a great idea for a video going over recommended paddles. I'm looking for something that's the best bang for my buck. I bought a field and stream Chute paddle and its terrible started coming apart at the attachment point. I paddle pretty flat water. What would you recommend for the best all-around paddle?
Love the channel, thanks in advance!
Oh right on thanks for watching all the videos! It means a lot when people support the channel like that. Go for a paddle that has a blade your cannot flex. Usually that will get you into a fiberglass or carbon paddle.
Sit in or sit on top
The age old question! I prefer sit-in for the stability in rapids
That was fast
@@funundercarkids I try! Haha
looks great where is this lake at with all the trees? I'm local to Houston looking for a place to go.
Thanks Kyle! This is lake Charlotte about 40min east of Houston. Wonderful place to paddle. Just head to Cedar Hill Park where there’s plenty of parking and a rough kayak launch.
I live in Houston too! Where exactly is that? I’d live to paddle there, just bought my first kayak!
Very cool! This is out in Wallisville just east of Baytown. About 40min from downtown Houston
What about editing software?
Final Cut Pro! It’s been amazing to use and fortunately is a one time purchase, not a monthly billing like adobe products. However, starting out a free editor is all ya need (iMovie, windows movie maker, etc)
Gatewood Brown thanks!
