“It truly is a film about love. Not the romantic kind. But the pure kind, that we are all born with. That lives inside of us, even when we forget. ” -From Priscilla's Email (But all i see is girl's love)
This trailer makes the movie look like a romantic story between 2 girls, but it's not about that. Just watched the movie today and during the film I've also been wondering if there was a bit of lesbianism in the movie. But just watch it and you'll understand. It is a film about love, yes, but not about a couple. More like friends/family love; being able to 'give' your love to others when they need it. Being able to help the people you love and to help them recover after all their struggles. If I had to say what the film's really about, I'd have to say this: It's about a girl being quite depressed and she then goes on a little "holiday" to recover from her mental wounds. That's basically it, there's nothing more to it. Anyhow, just watch this film, it's sad, but also really beautiful :) (Edit: just wanted to add this really quick: what makes Ghibli Ghibli films is that they're quite open for interpretation which explains why a lot of people also like to see this as a little romance based movie)
I really need this with subtitles! I'm so excited. I don't think it will be played as a romantic love story unfortunately, especially once they translate it to English - considering translations go through Disney. However you gotta think: if Marnie were a boy, all of those actions would 100% constitute this story being a love story. I know in the original book they were just friends, but nothing was portrayed nearly as affectionate and loving as even just this trailer has shown. There are a lot of signs of romantic interest, and I guarantee you that if this were an american animation with a boy and a girl, the story would absolutely lead to them being in love. There are small gestures that Ghibli is fantastic at displaying. Things that you don't really have to say out loud as "love" or that necessarily are overtly loving, but that are absolutely romantically affectionate. Ghibli has always had small gestures town to a T to real life gestures and this. This is just incredible. If this really is a love story, I am going to cry for ages. I don't think straight people realize how big something like this would have been to me as a child. These things are so important for children to see, and I really hope this is finally a child-friendly lesbian romance movie. We need so many more of those.
Just watched the movie right now. For all you people who want to ship this.... i wanted to as well. But after you watch this movie you may not want too. Great movie though! Cried a lot.....
oh my god its gorgeous. marnies hair is BREATHTAKING; I dont think ghibli has had a protagonist with such long hair before? and regardless about whether this is a love story or not, I'll still ship them LOL. I havent been this excited for a movie in ages!!
Guys, I read the book. It is 100% NOT a romance AT ALL. It is a ghost story and touches on topics of friendship, loneliness, mystery...And learning to let go. It is a beautiful little story and very touching, with a bittersweet and twist ending. I highly recommend the book!
I can hear the facts about the german educated people which live for business in Japan and married with Japaneses before the WW2, as Ozamu Tezuka depicted them in its excellent Story of 3 Adolf.
I have been lucky enough in my life to be surrounded by good friends, but I have missed out on the deep, affectionate, true companionship and love that these two characters feel for each other. And I desire it so much.
'An atmospheric ghost story with truths to tell about friendship, families and loneliness.' Can't wait! :D search about the story if you're un sure what's it about, this ones going to be awesome!
Another great film by Studio Ghibli, such a shame I can't understand Japanese but as soon as I find an English dubbed version I will be getting this. Another wonderful masterpiece.
:)I tried to translate as I have been learning Japanese for a few years. Warning my Japanese is not the best so its probably not 100% accurate. I swear if this is the last movie by Studio Ghibli,I'm gonna cry like a bitch and just give up hope on the world. It's hard enough that Hayao Miyazaki retired last year, it's even worse if the whole studio goes down too. These are the only movies left in this day and age worth going to see. Animated movies no less. Without these movies, all we have left are shitty American animated films and other bullshit. These aren't just movies;they're worlds, childhoods, and true works of art. It'll just suck if it turns out that it'll actually come to pass like that .
dionysos46 I'm just gonna assume that WDAS means Walt Disney Animation Studio but yeah it is sad. Frozen,as good as it was had plot holes that you'd NEVER FOR THE LIFE OF YOU FIND IN A MIYAZAKI MOVIE. Along with that,it had so many song numbers that it wasn't even a movie anymore but a musical. Studio Ghibli is the only pure, hand drawn ,story driven animation studio left (a big one at least, even if it's a foreign studio) and without it,there'll be nothing left to fill that gap. It's like if Nintendo stopped making video games. No one else can make games as unique, accessible, and entertaining as them. There'd just be no one that could fill up that need. The same idea is said with Studio Ghibli except with a much higher rate of fear because these days people are going more towards the cheap, action or horror filled flick or are watching the shitty, greed driven flicks like frozen which are basically made to help market toys that'll be made to milk the same movie. To put it simply since I feel like its getting pretty long my reply,Studio Ghibli has a way of making movies where they do it for a profit(because in the end they're still a company) but also to create an experience that can only be rivaled by Pixar (everything except Cars 2 and the planes movies, because everyone should know those are cop out cash ins) and even then Pixar doesn't come close. Without studio ghibli, animation will never be the same and the hardest part is the fact that animation studios will just keep putting up bullshit and the last holy studio will have been gone.
***** :'( manly tears made out of blood. The article DID give at least some kind of hope since it's possible it could open up again if it finds good talent. It's my worst nightmares confirmed though, the end of an era in a way. They will be missed but hopefully never forgotten. djhero0071 It legitemately feels like the end of an era. Its probably all financial reasons as to why they are shutting down because Marnie isn't doing as well as they hope.
It would be nice to see a movie where a foreigner or someone of european ancestry who's living in Japan and they're dealing with discrimination and the struggle to make a living, and the story would pretty much revolve around that central struggle. Probably never gonna happen.
John Anderson Anime at it's heart is made for Japan. It just so happens that people outside of Japan like anime too. The best bet is something domestically successful. You'd have to look closer to home for a movie like that. America has The Last Samurai...
Kiyo Well, any Westerner who is living in Japan is probably some affluent businessman or diplomat (or some English teacher). There are lots of poorer immigrants in Japan like Filipinos and Koreans that the Japanese aren't really sympathetic to.
This looks like a great movie I can't wait for it to come out in theaters in English! March 15th or something. I wouldn't mind watching it in Japanese with subtitles, I'm so excited! As soon a I heard about this and found out about the book I read it and loved it! It's too bad some people ruined the ending in the comments here on youtube. It's not a romance movie, its about friendship and that's what I like about it.
AGothicFairyTale If you want, you can watch the film on kissanime. i just finished watching it, after reading the book around christmas, i thought they might've ruined it since the books always better than the movie, but they did an amazing job, i literally cried a river. kissanime.com/Anime/When-Marnie-Was-There/Movie?id=96659 here's the link if you want :)
MsLuna Thanks for the link, I found it yesterday on anime flavor. I loved the movie, but I wish it was a little more like the book like Anna meeting the Lindsay's well of course their names would be Japanese in the movie besides just the girl and her brother, I know that they can't put everything in the movie. I don't want to spoil anything for people who are reading the comments. I cried too, such an emotional movie.
The debt of love...from Marnie...to Anna. Marnie has lost one chance. This is her last chance. Finally, Anna forgave Marnie...after Marnie lost a chance to say sorry. Marnie smiled. She really smiled.
for the whole movie up to the last 20 minutes, it seems that it is a romance, but as they further get into the background of the film, you will understand that it is not about romantic love, but more love in caring for other people and wanting to protect them etc. it's a very beautiful, heart warming movie, I highly recommend you watch it
OH MA GOD, I can't wait! Although, I know this was based on some children's book where the girl befriends Marnie and all. But could Ghibli have amped it up in to a love story? Honestly, I hope so.
It's really really cool how this is based on a book ! Since it's studio Ghibli quality of the highest is already expected and I can't wait ! ! However, I would suggest nobody read the description of the book on amazon if you're unfamiliar with the plot, as the description of the book on amazon contains spoilers (the description has keyword that gives the mystery away) ! ;__;
This movie is just marvelous and stunning. The trailer shows that. The movie never fails to make me cry and there is a big plot twist in the ending that im pretty sure no one saw coming. Like if you know what im talking about…
I see two persons, young and without hold and someone who understands them in their live, until they met each other and got to enjoy a really good firendship, like 2 sisters that hadnt seen each other for 5 years and finally meet again i dont know how to describe the feeling a person has when he meets someone that was just missing, i think a long lost brother/ sister gets really close to that. . They got a really strong Bond. This film will be really emotional. But as sadly as it is, not everyone will understand that this is not about what it seems, its about love, but not about love.
Those of you who are confused, you should try reading the book that this is based on, "When Marnie Was There". It's definitely not a love story, unless you are meaning a story of someone learning to love themselves. I'm not sure if the adaptation will change the story, though it seems that it has changed some environmental aspects to make it more relatable to Japanese folk. Anyways, I definitely recommend reading the novel! It was so lovely and moving.
Oh my goodness - crazy amazing. You know, watching this I wondered whether or not it was romantic - I saw blush here and there... And in the end, hearing "Anata ga suki" ('I like you') and seeing the words "Anata no koto ga daisuki" (basically 'I love you'), it made me wonder. Although, overall it seems like it's a love story - but it's not a romance story. It's a story about two people who love eachother, but not in a romantic way. Just in a pure, "you're a great person and I love you" sort of way that even aromantic individuals are capable of. The kind extremely close friends or family members can have. Anyway, it looks like it's a tear-jerker. I hope this isn't the last animated film from Studio Ghibli, but it just may be... At least, for a while. If they're taking a break from animation, hope they start animating again as soon as they can. I'm a huge Ghibli fan. Definitely wanna see this one. I should get it on Blu-Ray.
Ayel Lib I personally like the book more than the movie, I read it, and then watched it. The reason is that the book is written in first person, which gives you a better understanding of the way Anna is thinking, and therefore understanding why she acts like she does. But the third person view just doesn't work that well for this story, if you haven't read the book before you watch the movie, Anna's actions will seem quite odd at times. And you won't understand her as well as if you'd read the book. BUT the movie is really, really beautiful, the animation is just stunning! And is still well worth a watch, like really, watch it whenever you get a chance.
***** I mean, I guess with these parts of the trailer you could interpret it at romantic, but I think Ghibli is going more for a platonic relationship. Even so, I kind of wish it was a romance...
AnnaDreamFactory Ahh that's true. It's kind of sad that if one of the characters had been male the story might have taken that more romantic route. Either way, they relationship is adorable, even if it's platonic.
You are truely mistaken if you think there's no CGI in animes. Many '2D' animes uses CGI as backgrounds, vehicles, machinery and pedestrians. Sometimes even the main characters are CGI like Sailor Moon's transformations and Love Live's dancing.
Huke Chong That's true, but due to time etc. it's not as extreme. It's more subtle. I really like it at times for backgrounds because it gives them depth and makes the charakters stick out more :) But when Disney does it everything is 3Dish and its too much for me
Wolfswind003 I know it's really sad that disney have no plans on any 2d animated films for the next decade. That's why some disney animation veterans started an animated film project through fundraising (indiegogo).
Huke Chong I really hope they'll go back to 2D. 3D just takes away more and more of the viewers needed imagination. With 2D the mind is constantly interpreting froms, textures etc. It get's easier with 3D. I also really hope they start slowing things down. Frozen was so rushed. Too many character etc. But then again I never was a fan of princess movies where the princess is priveleged. I'd rather watch Ghibli princesses who are hard working and easier to relate to. I had big hopes for Big hero 6 but I think putting in the brothers death was slightly unnecessary. It might have worked out better as a flashback sort of thing. This way too much was going on. The superpowers and healing feauture were exiting enough in my opinion.
I saw this movie. And I want to say a word. I hope you don't see the spoilers. If you see it you will not enjoy this movie. Please don't see the spoilers. (Google translate)
aww , i was kinda hoping they were lesbians :( finally a movie that would air in alot of places as a kids movie and show that girls can love each other and its okay. and boys can too .
Same! I was hoping the same thing!!! I would have loved a love story with these two characters, I probably would have cried my eyes out, since Studio Ghibli always makes me cry. Damn, I'm kinda disappointed XD
Тут каждый кадр это нечто! Пейзажи, природа - хорошая приятная атмосфера. Необычная история, которая затягивает тебя полностью в происходящие события...кавайные тян. Пока смотрел, будто сам побывал на отдыхе.
this reminds me of heidi and the rich girl who couldn't walk. and this supposed to be the sequel of the story. where the rich girl can finally walk and they want to be together. but is it just my inmagination going crazy
I reeealllly want to say why people shouldn't ship Marnie and Anna together but I can't because spoilers, I'll just wait to see how many people will be disappointed. I just hope none of you will turn on Ghibli once you know the truth!
POSSIBLE SPOILER BELOW! I don't think Marnie exists because if you read the description of this movie on Wiki (I think!) it says that Anna (that's her name right?) finds an abandoned house in which Marnie is at the window sill.
Owen Kyte It has been stated that the company is in hiatus the company has NOT been taken down, you have to remember that Myazaki-san is not the only director/animator at the company
Anybody here who has watched the movie outside of Japan? In a movie theater or DVD or, worse come to worse, download? It's been 5 months since the release in Japan and I still can't find it in my country.
A lot of people are saying its a love story and shit.. and I can definitely see how it could be perceived that way but really its not I mean if you're okay with shipping incest then by all means ship away
My daughters whos 8 asked me "Do they have a crush on eachother?" at that point in the movie, I was questioning the same thing myself, in my mind. Pretty funny to anyone who just assumes gay people would be the only ones to assume that there might have been homosexual undertones.

can anyone help me to get the beautiful lullaby of marnie when she sang it when she was dancing with anna and when anna was remembering the past at last?, i love that lullaby and i dont know how to get it!
What happened to the fantasy that studio ghibli used to create? I mean I'm sure this is a beautiful movie as well, but... Look at spirited away and princess mononoke and that kind of stuff
Go see Princess Kaguya, it's one of the hands down best Ghibli films and is filled with magic. This story also has fantastical fantasy elements, just not obvious from the trailer.
Pumagami Ghibli's great fantasies were mostly done by H.Miyazaki. Princess Kaguya (as previously mentioned) is a marvel though, very fantasy/mythology like film with incredibly beautiful animation. Also, maybe I'm a little optimistic, but I think that Goro Miyazaki is decent enough to fill his fathers shoes.
This movie is truly a masterpiece.
+Owen Kyte animated feature: o, best song: yes
+lordDEMAXUS - Dude, if you don't like the film, shove off. Go voice your negative opinion elsewhere.
I know I was just asking the other guy.

This movie is the theme of family love.

*****
I'm just trying to help people not get their feelings crushed when they see it :c
their feelings wont be crushed if they see the movie and take something of their own from it though...
This feels like therapy. Ghibli was something that took me away from my anxiety when I went through hardships from late 2020 to early 2021.

So excited when this comes out in the US!
the artwork mannnn, so beautifully drawn
Oh gosh this is gonna be so cuuuuute.
It's really really cool how this is based on a book ! Since it's studio Ghibli quality of the highest is already expected and I can't wait ! !
However, I would suggest nobody read the description of the book on amazon if you're unfamiliar with the plot, as the description of the book on amazon contains spoilers (the description has keyword that gives the mystery away) ! ;__;
This film is going to make me cry buckets, I just know it.
I love this film a normal amount
My God was this movie beautiful
あの入江で、わたしはあなたを待っている。永久に−。
あなたのことが大好き。
"I'll be waiting for you by that creek, always."
"I Love You"
vistavizion my grammar is not that good,
and I can only pick up so much on this(some parts are spoken too fast)
But I will see what I can't do.
This movie is just marvelous and stunning. The trailer shows that. The movie never fails to make me cry and there is a big plot twist in the ending that im pretty sure no one saw coming. Like if you know what im talking about…
I can't wait to see the movie :) I know it will be great ♥
really ghibli !
from Orchestra to American Country music trash
what a fall!
Can't wait to see this.
This movie was released on Blue Ray DVD a couple days ago.
Didn't even know it was out until now.
I have no idea what's going on but I'm crying.
I am reading the english book right now .
Shahida Doucouré is it good?
Yes it is I finished it and it's very interesting
Ayel Lib I personally like the book more than the movie, I read it, and then watched it. The reason is that the book is written in first person, which gives you a better understanding of the way Anna is thinking, and therefore understanding why she acts like she does. But the third person view just doesn't work that well for this story, if you haven't read the book before you watch the movie, Anna's actions will seem quite odd at times. And you won't understand her as well as if you'd read the book. BUT the movie is really, really beautiful, the animation is just stunning! And is still well worth a watch, like really, watch it whenever you get a chance.
I hope this film becomes successful internationally because I hate to see this possibly becoming Studio Ghibli's final film.
I can't believe this is possibly going to be the last Studio Ghibli film. So sad..
I just saw the movie even though I don't understand Japanese. It was beautiful :)
This is gonna hurt, isn't it?
"Anata ga suki yo!" Is this going to be a love story, then?
"Suki" doesn't necessarily refer to a romantic love. It can also just be the kind of love between very good friends...
Ida Bothilde Wind The translation of that sentence is "Of course I forgive you! I like you!". So. Yea.
***** uhmm, hmm, without spoiling TOO much (i've read the book!), i can say for certain this would not be the case!
So glad there are no CGI animes jet. Disney's CGI stuff makes my eyes hurt by now :(
Guess you haven't seen the new Sailor Moon Trasformations
You are truely mistaken if you think there's no CGI in animes. Many '2D' animes uses CGI as backgrounds, vehicles, machinery and pedestrians. Sometimes even the main characters are CGI like Sailor Moon's transformations and Love Live's dancing.
Huke Chong That's true, but due to time etc. it's not as extreme. It's more subtle. I really like it at times for backgrounds because it gives them depth and makes the charakters stick out more :) But when Disney does it everything is 3Dish and its too much for me
Wolfswind003
I know it's really sad that disney have no plans on any 2d animated films for the next decade.
The superpowers and healing feauture were exiting enough in my opinion.
omf I literally cried like a bitch watching this
I saw this masterpiece in Umeda City Cinema Osaka. I cant speak, understand or read japanese, but I understand this movie!
YURI!? Hmm, I like!
I saw this movie.
And I want to say a word.
I hope you don't see the spoilers.
If you see it you will not enjoy this movie.
Please don't see the spoilers.
(Google translate)
it looks so cute and i love drama movies i want to watch it
aww , i was kinda hoping they were lesbians :(
finally a movie that would air in alot of places as a kids movie
and show that girls can love each other and its okay.
and boys can too .
NO THAT'S WRONG!
if you're a girl you don't have to be a lesbian to fall in love with a girl...
Truly...such a sad world we are living in today....
Same! I was hoping the same thing!!! I would have loved a love story with these two characters, I probably would have cried my eyes out, since Studio Ghibli always makes me cry. Damn, I'm kinda disappointed XD
Studio Ghibli - R.I.P. 2015.
Тут каждый кадр это нечто! Пейзажи, природа - хорошая приятная атмосфера. Необычная история, которая затягивает тебя полностью в происходящие события...кавайные тян. Пока смотрел, будто сам побывал на отдыхе.
Studio Ghibli, We want historical films
For example, personal Miyamoto Musashi Or any personal Samurai
woa nice the only movie i havent see yet
looks so sadddddd... it's awesome!!!!!!!
OMG a new ghibli movie!!! haha, maybe not so new for japan, but for me!° ♥
I love this song
I can't believe people thought about lesbians in that movie. Says so much about society.
I really think a lot of people here should read the book before making comments about something they don't understand.
this reminds me of heidi and the rich girl who couldn't walk. and this supposed to be the sequel of the story. where the rich girl can finally walk and they want to be together. but is it just my inmagination going crazy
SPOILER!!!!
Marnie is the Grandmother of Anna, Marnie died a year before the events in the movie.
I thought that Anna and Marnie were going KorraSami but then I was wrong. This movie is beautiful.
Wait, did this trailer just spoil the end?
if this is going to be the last studio ghibli movie.... i dont know what ill do! :(
Amazing movie, and even though rumors state it's the last full length movie from the studio this is in fact not confirmed
+jody024 On a website, it says it's their last masterpiece.
Owen Kyte
It has been stated that the company is in hiatus the company has NOT been taken down, you have to remember that Myazaki-san is not the only director/animator at the company
jody024 I know it's Hiromasa Yonebayashi that did this. Believe me, this movie here MUST WIN this year for Best Animated Feature!!!!
Owen Kyte
a disney film will take it anyway....
jody024 FUCK NO!!!! FUCK THEM MOTHERFUCKING ASSHOLES!!!!
Anybody here who has watched the movie outside of Japan? In a movie theater or DVD or, worse come to worse, download? It's been 5 months since the release in Japan and I still can't find it in my country.
Sad news, Studio Ghibli MAY stop making films after this one! :(
PS. Not trolling here, this is what I heard!
well i'm already crying and i didn't understand a single word.
A lot of people are saying its a love story and shit.. and I can definitely see how it could be perceived that way but really its not
I mean if you're okay with shipping incest then by all means ship away
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaa I want to see it I WANT !!!!
My daughters whos 8 asked me "Do they have a crush on eachother?" at that point in the movie, I was questioning the same thing myself, in my mind.
Pretty funny to anyone who just assumes gay people would be the only ones to assume that there might have been homosexual undertones.
Awesome.
Why must it be the last movie!!
+ılıllı Turles is lost in the internet ılıllı it isnt their last blogs.indiewire.com/animationscoop/new-images-from-studio-ghiblis-french-animated-feature-the-red-turtle-20150426
lordDEMAXUS - O-O
Owen Kyte 55 people HAHAHAHAHA LOL
Owen Kyte you thought this was hard work? go watch anomalisa.
it will be a good movie :3 it looks at least like it would and it will be made by Studio Ghibli :)
this trailer just screams yuri
This trailer made me feel sad for some reason.
can anyone help me to get the beautiful lullaby of marnie when she sang it when she was dancing with anna and when anna was remembering the past at last?, i love that lullaby and i dont know how to get it!
ich hoffe es dauert nicht mehr so lange bis er in Deutschland auf dvd raus kommt ._,
What happened to the fantasy that studio ghibli used to create?
I mean I'm sure this is a beautiful movie as well, but... Look at spirited away and princess mononoke and that kind of stuff
Go see Princess Kaguya, it's one of the hands down best Ghibli films and is filled with magic.
This story also has fantastical fantasy elements, just not obvious from the trailer.
Artists don't like to stay in one spot their whole career. They like to grow and branch out in different areas.
Pumagami because those you mention are directed by Miyzaki, who has retired
The win rises was HAYAO MIYAZAKI's last film. This was a movie directed by SOMEONE ELSE
