How to Sew a French Seam with a Split - DIY Step by Step Sewing Tutorial for a Professional Finish

  • Easy to follow, step by step, clear and concise tutorial on how to sew a French Seam with a split. No need to trim any seams for a beautiful professional finish.
As most commercial patterns are made with a ⅝” seam allowance, this tutorial guides you through using that measurement.
If you want to sew with industry standards, or you are using a very fine or sheer fabric for your project, adjust your seam allowances on your pattern to ⅜”. Stitch the first seam with a ⅛” seam allowance and follow with ¼” for the second row of stitching.
It’s a very neat and clean finish for any sewing project with a split. Especially useful when you don’t own a serger or overlocker.
**Do not use this finish for thick or heavy fabrics. Those are more suited to be finished with a flat felled seam.
It’s important to be very precise with your stitching as you need to cut right into a corner that needs flipping to other side.
It doesn’t take long to master even for beginner sewists and the result is impressive!

@@NotchesSewing well there seems to ALWAYS be that negative one or two in every comments section. You are much appreciated from what I can see in the comments. I’ve just found you, but others are equally as impressed. All types of baby items would be good for me, thanks for asking.

Yeah it was from an actual fashion designer too and whenI checked out his channel, he couldn’t even do it properly…….

Thank you so much. I followed your step by step instructions on splits at the bottom of a silk Kaftan I'm making. Because it's silk and I'm french seaming the sides I had no idea how I was going to perfectly intergrate the french seams into the splits until I found your instructional video. Worked out perfectly. You are a star xx

I love your basic tips, I've sewn for 56 years but can always learn something new. I have made side vents in retail clothes often. Especially if a but tight on tummy. Also if I'm shortening pants to Capri length the side vent looks nicer and your pants not just chopped off. I may refer some beginners in my upcycle groups to your channel.

Thank you so much for this instructional video, I'm embarrassed to say how many times I watched it before attempting to sew on my first garment (a cotton/linen blend shirt for my son). Happy to report, it worked perfectly and I sewed the underarm of the short sleeves at the same time as the sides and split with the french seams. Now I just have to garner the courage to do the last step in this make-buttonholes! Think I need a glass of wine first.

Thanks for sharing! Glad to hear this. May I suggest doing a couple of test buttonholes on some scrap to find the best settings for your fabric and style. Better to throw out scraps than have to try and unpick anything. 😊
