They were never extinct in PA people need to go out into the woods more there has been a family of these living in skull hollow since i was a kid and they have to be other places
I almost pointed that out also but decided not too. You are 100% right and it changes much of the point. They havent been here and hiding. They are migrating from other states and Canada. Ohio now had some also.
190 fisher cats(weasels) were reintroduced in the mid 90s in northern PA. Edit: I’m guessing the “news” is reporting that the reintroduction actually held. While it would have been pertinent to explain that reintroduction took place it can’t be conclusive where the current fishers came from. IMHO
so they didn't go extinct, like a hawk I saw that was said was extinct and then people reporting them, HOW some people make their living often off our overtaxed dollars, geesh.
My brother claimed to have seen one back in the 70's in Pike County PA and I believe he probably did. Just as the game commission came and investigated BIG cat tracks and said they were "not Mountain Lions", yet we saw the tracks and heard their screams/snarls from time to time.
I thought I saw one once and filmed it. When I got home and looked at it frame by frame it turned out to be a tan bob cat that looked bigger than it was because I was going up hill.
They have been in crawford county for around 15 years i have one that is constantly under a shed behind my house and both of the other animals mentioned have been seen near my home for over 30 years and there have been creditable sittings of cougers here for 40 years
Extirpated, not extinct. They were never thought to be extinct. They were extirpated from the area. As a news channel, please learn some vocabulary, as you’re supposed to be enlightening the public. Maybe check with an animal expert at a local school? What a joke. It didn’t go extinct!!!
@ Are you suggesting they know the word, yet purposefully don’t use it to dumb down the public? Here’s the irony, that you’d believe something so stupid may be proving your point, (which I don’t agree with). You see the problem? Your response is stupid, so I should conclude you watch the news? I watch the news, yet I noticed they used the wrong word. How can we justify both of us watching news, and for you, as you state, as a result are getting dumber, but somehow I’m not. Very confusing. Is it the elusive “they” doing it? Is there a group that decides how dumb they should make the public, and which data they should withhold, or warp? It isn’t happening.
We don't have those..lol.. Ask the game commission they will tell you it's not a thing.. even though they are on trail cameras and visual sightings. But you know they aren't here
Game commission officials will assure you that you only saw a house cat; these people make the mistake of thinking seasoned outdoor enthusiasts are as ignorant as the PGC as a whole.
I live in duncansville Pennsyltucky, and six or seven years ago I saw one on my property. I lived with two puppers who weighed 20 lbs, combined, necessitating me to take necessary measures. Seen a video on the inner webs of a fisher cat and fox encounter, that horrified me.
I used to spend a significant amount of time in the woods, it’s really rare to catch a glimpse of a weasel! I can only think of 2 times in over 50years that I witnessed them in the wild!
Yeah they seem to be making a serious comeback, I've had half a dozen sightings in the last few years, before that I had only one sighting about 30 years ago, it was engaged in a horrific battle with a skunk (Southeastern Massachusetts)
I am surrounded by trees in Western Maryland & love the wildlife. Twice a 3' Martin with a silky bushy black tail showed up. A weasel that I never knew existed.
I'm in central Bucks county pa and have seen a mating pair numerous times, they tried getting into my chicken coop without success but they must be extremely strong because they bent the heck out of the heavy gage chicken wire
I live near the Pennsylvania border in NY. My friends and I that hike and spend time outdoors have had many sightings over the years. I’m quite surprised to find out people thought these were extinct or uncommon here personally.
I've seen them in Centre county and can sometimes hear them 'screaming' at night near my house. The state also claims flying squirrels only live in the northern tier counties but my cat has caught (and thankfully didn't harm) two and my neighbor has seen them in the Scotia gamelands.
The return of apex predators is a testament to the hard work many folks have put in to restore and protect our wild lands. Sightings like this are the fruits of our labor and investment in our natural treasures. If your ecosystem can support apex predators, you've got a HEALTHY ecosystem!
Yall are idiots. PA FISH AND GAME introduced these into the forrests and state lands way back in the 60s and they didnt realize these are like wolverines 😂😂. I trap in the ANF and see alot of them. For the last 25 years. Very much so not extinct
Well that certainly justifies calling “Yall” idiots. I’d sooner think that someone who uses Y’all in a sentence, but doesn’t know how to spell it, is more likely the idiot.
My dad lives in Sewickley, his house is on top of a hill about a half mile from the road and surrounded by woods. A couple summers ago i swear i saw a black weasel run into woods. My first thought was that it was a cat but then i realised it was to low to the ground to be a cat. My aunt and uncle lived in Butler county and my Uncle said that weasels had killed a few of my Aunts ducks and chickens.
Well in his defense he qualified it to say that they had been extinct in PA. I’m more annoyed that he called it a type of weasel. It’s in the weasel family, and so are skunks, martins, badgers, wolverines, and ferrets. We don’t call them weasels do we?
I grew up around Clymer, and a distant relative got one in a trap over towards Marion center a few years ago. They weren’t there when I lived there, I spent enough time in the woods that I would have seen some.
Are the people reporting this trained journalists? Then how about some background info....LIKE WHAT REGIONS THE FISHER IS CURRENTLY INDIGENOUS TO? Oh..I get it: that's rocket science...above your pay grade.
48 inches long? That’s huge. Very cute looking. If a weasel could reappear after being nearly extinct for almost 200 years, can you imagine what’s hiding out there in the oceans?
My dad and I saw one in my backyard 5 years ago. In Allegheny County. I had no idea what it was. My dad knew what it was because he had worked for the forestry.
We've had fisher's in Blair County for years. Had a dead fisher in our backyard 4 years ago. Our grandson has pictures of fishers on our property we let him hunt on. We've heard them too--very creepy sound. Fishers are not new in PA whatsoever.
I’m fairly certain that my family and I witnessed and video recorded a Fisher up at Lake Jean near Ricketts Glen state park a year or two ago. We didn’t realize they were believed to be extinct in PA.
You can probably thank Kentucky who traded elk to Wisconsin for fishers which they introduced in the mountains. Fishers put on a lot of miles following introduction, and will be frequently seen on trail cameras and during the day incidental to other outdoor activities. They have little fear of anything and behave as if they think they own the place. Westmoreland County residents should start keeping their cats in the house at night.
They are everywhere in Fayette County, and have been. They have been on my daughter and son in laws property as well as my son's for as long as they have been living there. They have pictures and videos.
It’s I. The weasel family, but it’s not a type of weasel. It’s a type of fisher. Very closely related to the Martin. A skunk is in the weasel familiar too. You wouldn’t called it a weasel though.
I seen one chasing a rabbit on to rt422 just a couple miles south of Indiana PA about 3 years ago. There's a creek that run under the road and I've heard fischers like being near water

Yep here in VA also
Yep, I saw one in NJ and a guy contacted me who was doing a thesis on them.
Yup, we had some near us.
That's what I just said we see them on our land all the time what is this whole Extinction thing
Saw them in Fayette County probably 10 or 15 years ago
This report should have been fact checked before airing. Even if it were true, the term is "extirpated", not extinct. There's a huge difference.
I almost pointed that out also but decided not too. You are 100% right and it changes much of the point. They havent been here and hiding. They are migrating from other states and Canada. Ohio now had some also.
Very poor reporting. They're common in northeast Pennsylvania.
Especially since PA game commission brought hundreds in.
That’s the fake news for ya
And Northwestern PA
yeah i had one wipe out my flock about 4 years ago. i'm in SE PA.

Seen two in the poconos back in the late 90’s and again in 2005.
We have seen Fisher's in Erie County for years. Confused on this report? Like someone else said, They released some in the 90's.
You might want to check with the PGC before you do a story like this. They reintroduced them a long time ago along with the coyotes.
They did trap and transfer the fisher. They didn't put coyotes here
My brother claimed to have seen one back in the 70's in Pike County PA and I believe he probably did. Just as the game commission came and investigated BIG cat tracks and said they were "not Mountain Lions", yet we saw the tracks and heard their screams/snarls from time to time.
Yeah, isn't it insulting? I'm in NE Philly. People don't believe we have coyotes here.
Maybe it’s a Squonk?
I thought I saw one once and filmed it. When I got home and looked at it frame by frame it turned out to be a tan bob cat that looked bigger than it was because I was going up hill.
Game Commission: “you probably just saw a house cat”. lol! Insulting to say the least.
I saw one in Huntingdon Co. in 2012. Unfortunately a neighbor unalived it a couple of weeks later.
They have been in crawford county for around 15 years i have one that is constantly under a shed behind my house and both of the other animals mentioned have been seen near my home for over 30 years and there have been creditable sittings of cougers here for 40 years

Extinctirpated.
But it’s a news channel in the US. We have to keep the folks stupid.

The Fischer Cat was reintroduced in PA in 1994. Although rare, they’ve been here for the last 30 years.
We’ve got one right near my parents home in Binghamton, NY. It killed several of my neighbors chickens over the summer.
Even if they were never reintroduced trail cams all over the world are capturing animals that we thought were extinct.
That’s very true! Most wild animals hear and smell us long before we get near them!
Let’s talk about the PA mountain lions 🦁
We don't have those..lol.. Ask the game commission they will tell you it's not a thing.. even though they are on trail cameras and visual sightings. But you know they aren't here
Bring on the trail cam pics!
Game commission officials will assure you that you only saw a house cat; these people make the mistake of thinking seasoned outdoor enthusiasts are as ignorant as the PGC as a whole.
Even if the Fisher wasn't really extinct before the pics this does highlight how little we really know about what's out there in remote areas.
Remote areas!!!!😆😂
Yeah, "remote areas" as in more or less inaccessible like far up in the mountains or in the middle of a jungle. Sheesh.
I live in duncansville Pennsyltucky, and six or seven years ago I saw one on my property. I lived with two puppers who weighed 20 lbs, combined, necessitating me to take necessary measures. Seen a video on the inner webs of a fisher cat and fox encounter, that horrified me.

Oh crap! I'm in Far NE Philly. Glad your chicken wire thwarted them. I hope they stay up there. We have mink too close for comfort here.
Seen 1 on game lands 2 weeks ago news on tv is BS.
Game wardens also claim that there are no mountain lions either, in this area, despite numerous sightings, including myself.
I live near the Pennsylvania border in NY. My friends and I that hike and spend time outdoors have had many sightings over the years. I’m quite surprised to find out people thought these were extinct or uncommon here personally.
Guess we better beware of the big cats that don't exist here anymore either
Lots of fisher cats in Parker Pa !!!! They have been there for years!!!
I'm from Pittsburgh I've been seeing them my whole life up in the mountains above kinzua lake
I've seen them in Centre county and can sometimes hear them 'screaming' at night near my house. The state also claims flying squirrels only live in the northern tier counties but my cat has caught (and thankfully didn't harm) two and my neighbor has seen them in the Scotia gamelands.
I saw one in Somerset county 12 years ago!! They were not extinct in Pennsylvania
There’s one of these by me. Attacked cat and she almost died, killed neighborhood chickens.
What is cats name?
I lost my old beautiful black cat to something. No longer do I let my cats explore my acreage.
The game commission re-introduced them a couple of years ago!
I’m pretty sure I saw one in the mountains of Luzerne county. It was night and looked exactly like this Fisher.
We had a pair of them living on one of the branches of Pine Creek up near the Butler Line, about 55 years ago. I used to see them regularly.
I thought the PA Game Commission just reintroduced some of those a couple years ago?
Edit: that was Martens.
There's been one in Susquehanna trails for about a year now.
Fishers were re-introduced to PA by the game commission in 1994, and they've had trapping seasons for them for many years now. Where have you been?
I’ve seen bobcats, red foxes, and plenty of coyote in eastern Pennsylvania. So the showing up in western Pennsylvania is not surprising.
Seriously? They have been in the state for years. The Game Commission released them years ago

a rider at our barn in Hunterdon County NJ not far from PA saw a fisher cat several months ago. She got a good look at it.
The game commission released many of them years ago . My friend is a taxidermist and mounts them all the time...
I can’t believe they are rare in Pa. I have them on property 15 miles north of the Pa border in Western NY. They have been here for years.
Exactly. And animals don't know about state lines.
Maybe it was once “thought to be extinct” but not for a long time. They’ve been regularly spotted in central PA for the last decade+
They have been seen by hunters for YEARS in PA, has never left.
They have been in new york for years and they are just now seeing them in Penn? Get out more people
I found a roadkill of one near Lake George about 15 years ago.
It seems to me your definition of "extinct" and my definition don't match up. What dictionary is it that you use anyway?
The game commission reintroduced them years ago. No big deal . But no mention here .

You probly saw a mink. Similar to a weasel, but dark or black. Same family. Much smaller than a fisher. 👍🇺🇸❤️
a wolverine showed up in southern michigan years ago and they had not been in south michigan in over 100 years.
That anyone knows of.
A puma was struck by a car in Conn. a few years ago. It had come all the way from the Black Hills of S. Dakota.
No such thing as "once extinct" as your title says.
Sorry but I'm not sorry.
