  • "Take 1" is a series of improvised video-albums by the pianist and composer Gabriela Montero. Each video-album is composed and recorded in real time, in one single take from start to finish, and without interruption. There are no edits or corrections. Recorded at DD Studio, Barcelona.
This album is a highlight selection from 2 improvisation sessions recorded during lockdown. They are inspired by an evening spent listening to some old jazz records...

Gabriela Montero is unparalleled in history of music. Many can improvise jazz, or other styles, but Gabriela can improvise in just about every style, from Jazz, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven to Argentinian tango, Bresilian Bossa Nova, even Ravel... you name it... Fabulous ! I would have been delighted to have her teaching me the piano for one hour...

I am a jazz educator and lifetime pianist, performer. Gabriella has that something that we all strive for as improvisors. She is primarily classical improvisation, not jazz . But it all wellsprings from the same place. A mastery of chords and scales. But that is the easy part. She posses something innately and naturally....an inborn natural spirit of music that has found its expression in a lovely soul, simply called....."Gabriella."

Already in the first minutes, especially around the eighth minute I was shaken up to the core and crying of joy and gloom. I improvise on the piano frequently as well and intend to respond to these pieces of mastery by painting my own picture of the feeling I experienced thanks to you. You are great and I wish you all the best.

Molto brava. I pianisti con formazione 'classica' raramente improvvisano, e questo è un carattere distintivo da apprezzare. Bello il tocco

This is perfect for these cloudy days in our beloved valley…The whole album is great and listening to your jazzy improvisations was particularly interesting (it was cool) given you don’t play jazz as often as you play classical music. Just like baroque music, jazz is a quintessential improvisational music genre. It’s so essential... Jazz musicians would do anything to have the gift you have (It’s like the Holy Grail of music ). In one of your jazzy improvisations, your left hand did what the right hand does most of the time (the main speech, so to speak). Jazz improvisers don’t usually do that, simply because it’s a lot harder to improvise with the left hand. You do it with such dexterity (such unique jazz improvisation). The other pieces were so peaceful and I’ll use the adjectives that describe Federico Mompou’s music: incantatory and meditative sound... The daylight sipping through the curtain in the back gives your studio a different aura. I love it: sunlight is literally Life... Thanks for sharing this album, It is a healing balm in these stormy pandemic days ... Brava!!!

I love improvisation, letting the music flow. Gabriela's sources are classical, I don't see any jazz impulse here, it sounds more like classical impromptu. And, fortunately, she does not have the egocentrism of Keith Jarrett, and Gabriela's music flows without falling into histrionic excesses. (I say this from my deepest respect and admiration for Jarrett, but sometimes he gets a little irksome for my taste).
