How Shaw wasn’t nominated for Jaws is bewildering. He steals every scene he’s in.

It's strange that none of the main three actors got in, considering they all do such a good job. Dreyfuss was the only one to get a major nomination, doing so at BAFTA, but other than that there was no recognition, not even from critics groups, so I guess there wasn't much of a buzz around the actual performances. Some, especially older voters in the Academy, may have passed it off as being reliant on the shark and action scenes, and looked down on the acting.

I love these segments, Louis! I'm with you that it's unbelievable that Michael Stuhlbarg has never been nominated. One of our great character actors.
I have watched Call Me By Your Name like 10 times and that father-son scene and the ending by the fireplace always get me. Actors have been nominated for less.

Some other very deserving Best Supporting Actors never even nominated are Henry Gibson for Nashville, Roddy McDowall for Fright Night, Eric Stoltz for Mask, Jeff Goldblum for The Big Chill, Dudley Moore for Foul Play, Peter Falk for The In Laws, Albert Brooks for Drive, Jerry Lewis for The King of Comedy and Charles Grodin for Midnight Run.

Hey, Louis, it’s your cousin M.G. here! Totally agree with you about Michael Stuhlbarg and Jude Law, among others.
I have a snub from a film that isn’t your usual type of movie, but this film was nominated in several other categories, including Best Supporting Actress. My pick is Tenoch Huerta as Namor (the Sub-Mariner) in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever from 2022. Yes, I know it’s the MCU, but this performance is ridiculously intense, kind of insane, and also weirdly believable. Like Tenoch Huerta makes me believe that a flying, amphibious merman with wings on his ankles could be an effective antagonist. He swings from being unhinged to being sympathetic to the film’s hero, Shuri, and it all makes sense when you understand what happened to his mother during the Spanish colonization of the Yucatán Peninsula (oh, yeah, this character is also 450 years old). Like, the character probably shouldn’t work, but he does, and that’s thanks to Tenoch Huerta’s performance.

The Academy’s treatment of Singin’ in the Rain as a whole is shameful, but Donald O’Connor’s lack of a Supporting Actor nomination is especially egregious. I also think Bill Irwin is pretty devastating as the dad in Rachel Getting Married. Donald Sutherland and Alfred Molina also have a plethora of roles they should’ve been nominated for.

27:47 _"Any corrections you nerds wanna roast me for in the comments?"_
Why, yes, there is! @11:56, Gene Wilder was nominated for _The Producers_ in 1968, not '67. _The Producers_ was released in Pittsburgh in late 1967, but didn't get its wide release until '68. So, it competed at the Oscars with the '68 movies.
But also, Alan Arkin was snubbed for a supporting actor nomination for _Wait Until Dark._ And Burt Lancaster for _Sweet Smell of Success._ And Anthony Perkins for _Psycho._

I love me some Louis Virtel insight on anything Hollywood. So many great performances highlighted here, but I REALLY agree with Andrew Garfield in "The Social Network." His wounded pride in that movie is something to behold. Plus, his heartbreakingly painful scream of anguish and betrayal and exasperation and self-pity in "Never Let Me Go"...I could watch that anytime. Great book too.

You could switch out all the supporting nominees in 1975 and come up with a better list: Robert Shaw in JAWS, Henry Gibson in NASHVILLE, John Cazale in DOG DAY AFTERNOON, Will Sampson in ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST and Max Von Sydow in THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR.

Nitpicks: Gene Wilder was nominated in 1969 for Best Supporting Actor of 1968, not 1967. And Donald Crisp was not an Oscar nominated dad for National Velvet. He was an Oscar winning dad for How Green Was My Valley.

My grandfather loved Clifton Webb's performance in Laura. So many deliciously delivered lines "Let me put it this way... I should be sincerely sorry to see my neighbor's children devoured by wolves" was one of our favorites. I read this one at grandpa's funeral: "Love is eternal. It has been the strongest motivation for human actions throughout history. Love is stronger than life. It reaches beyond the dark shadow of death."
Okay and one more favorite quote from the movie that I say ALL THE TIME is by Vincent Price "I don't know a lot about anything, but I know a little about practically everything."

You can’t go comparing anybody’s acting ability to Johnny Flynn. It’s like comparing somebody’s intelligence to a dead chihuahua.
More importantly, why do people keep giving Johnny Flynn work? I saw that he was in a play with Kit Harrington once and genuinely worried the world might end in a wooden acting singularity

The obsessive hate of liberal Americans with Three Billboards is pathetic for us Europeans, the movie is a masterpiece, and NO ONE came even close to what Sam Rockwell did, thankfully, the acting branch did their job and awarded the best one. Christopher Plummer took Michael Stuhlbarg´s place and I understand why actors wanted to honor him, so there is nothing you can do.
And no, Renner deserved the nomination over Garfield that does nothing complicated on Social Network, Armie Hammer as the twins were more compelling, but we gotta pretend he does not exist now.
And Dive My Car is such a overrated movie, a good example of what happens when you turn a short story into 3 hour movie, bur I do agree that Masaki Okada was stellar, however, he could have been nominated instead of J. K. Simmons.

People keep trying to make Call Me By Your Name sound like something more than it actually was: a big budget Lifetime movie with a director and actors (miss cast in Hammer's case) who were to afraid to actually show gay intimacy, romance, or sex. The bigger snub that year was that Gods Own Country, a much braver, and better film dealing with similar subject matter was ignored by critics, and most of the LGBTQ+ community.
