There’s currently an ongoing remake of the manga series called ‘Exoskull Zero’, but I’d honestly wait for an official western release if it ever actually happens, because the indie translation is awful. Not like broken English bad, more like it’s been translated by an alien that doesn’t understand human language at all. Totally different story, though, so if you do end up attempting to reading it you’re not gonna be spoiling the original series.
@whitedwarf13 Bennet just complains about how problematic or offensive they are without providing context and a historical analysis like this reviewer does. It is annoying to watch Bennet's content and it is why I stopped watching him years ago.
"The world is perilously awful, and people are going to try and take advantage of you and drain your life away, from a young age. Because those forces are menacing and powerful, many if not most of us are going to fall prey to them. But as long as there is another force with an even more resolute desire to protect humanity, and as long as the Human Spirit shows itself to that Hero to be worth protecting, then there remains some hope for Humanity's future." Powerful stuff. This is so many anime in a nutshell: Eva, Berserk, Devilman, Kill La Kill, the list goes on. "Faith the size of a mustard seed," that's how they would have put it when I was in Sunday school

Finally! Someone who doesn't just dismiss this one for the bat shit crazy monsters and other vulgarities. Thank you so much for analysing this OVA I saw it a couple of years ago and loved it when I saw it myself. I was so shocked when so many people dismissed it as 'Ugly' and disgusting. Which I couldn't understand when there are far worse things out there. I hope this gets a revival too somehow, I'd love to see the story all the way through to the end. Again thanks a lot man! Dude, I agree, I loved this manga, it's so crazy and weird I had to read it all. I can't understand why everyone hates it so much to the point that the last few volumes have never even been translated into English.
I love this manga, and it's so cool to see it getting a bit of attention, and in such loving detail, too. Finding out that it was only half-translated into English bothered me enough to make me consider translating the rest of it myself.
I'm honestly not a big digi fan, in fact I disagree with him on quite alot of things so it's kinda hard for me to word this without it sounding like a backhanded compliment but this was actually a great video. I don't know if digi will ever read this or if a compliment from someone who generally dislikes his videos means anything to him but I have to say this was a really well put together and very interesting video, I really appreciated it.
I picked this up on DVD at the recommendation of Animerica in the late 90's or early 2000s. I also was able to buy all of the manga that were translated. I LOVE APOCALYPSE ZERO!!!!!!!! The violence still bothers me but the story is so fascinating. I love the conflict between Kakugo and his brother, later sis, Man-Demon Harara. I enjoy what different relationships represent in the manga: man vs. nature, natural vs. constructed, love vs. exploitation, and so on. I really enjoy the crazy character design and mecha design. One thing that really stood out to me in the manga was the admitting of the Japanese experimenting on people during WWII! I have only read one other manga by a Japanese citizen that admitted to the atrocities. Thanks for recognizing and discussing this manga and anime.
Man, the character design reminds me to radiant silvergun anime cut scenes but technically better and more endearing, the premise is also very appealing, Thanks for the heads up, I will definitely check this out

Immediately after watching the Ova i game right back to watch this video. What a wonderful ride!
So glad Urotsukidoji was mentioned because the first few minutes literally had me thinking, "This would have been something that could ease people into Urotsukidoji."
ironically, I watched the first episode of Urotsukidouji about an hour before this went up, and kinda felt it was like a more tame (though more pornographic) Apocalypse Zero
Hironobu Kageyama, nuff said. Oh and the person who directed this also directed the Iczer OVAs, Mr. Masami Obari was also involved with this anime. When are you getting to Blue Sonnet?
I think maybe this property has been more influential than people realize. Even Capcom has a lesser known character named Jin who is clearly inspired by the hero designs here, particularly the white uniforms and hot blooded resolve.
Dude! Youre like the only person ive seen say this! Ive speculated this for years! Theyre literally almost the same character! I read on capcoms fan database that kinu nishimura said that jin is based off the the main character of this show kakugo hakakure. I was never crazy about this ova, but its cool that capcom artists(who have such a dope, influencial style) are influenced by such far out obscure source material like this which means they recognize/acknowledge rare gems many others overlook.
I've always been interested in this thanks to the Zero armor being fucking sick and being a tokusatsu fan, and you've just given me another incentive to check this out.

You've definitely inspired me to give it another go. It was also really interesting seeing how its connected to other great anime via its creators. Very cool.
Looking at older shows like this remind me of how much I fucking despise gradients, specifically how they're used in modern anime to commonly hide a lack of detail in artwork. You don't need that shit if your art is good enough. And this is good enough

Ken making bodies explode after hitting their vital points. Eva 01 going berserk. The cries of pain of Goku taking blow after blow. The darkshitty world of Berserk. The silly sexual jokes of Puni Puni Poemi. I could add tons more. That's what I like manga and anime to begin with. Stories and designs that are food for thought, wrapped in cathartic violence and eroticism.
No joke, I've always hated the ridicule and incredulous response to Tsumiko hugging her skinless classmate? Like, I've always seen it as her knowing full well that he's dead as shit and nothing can be done to change that, but to at least try and give him some emotional comfort, to know that his friends are there and he's not dying alone, even if he is in scared and in pain, of which the sheer ridiculousness of doing so is thematically evident not just in this scene but in the entire series, at least what I'v ebeen able to read and watch of it. That being said the one thing in the anime that actually bewildered me like other people are bewildered at other things in this OVA is taking a one-panel character used to joke about piercings with her silly safety pin nipple piercing that she shows from under her swimsuit and just like. Making her appear with that as her general character design in the scene. Tit out and everything, her swimsuit is built to only have one half of the top to it. Like what

All I remember about this one is BennettTheSage making one of his Anime Abandon videos about this, and how he said it wasn't reviewable because of the amount of censoring needed for that video to exist on youtube.
Digi, I'm adoring the new content you're putting out. Content being awesome aside, the writing in this is excellent. I mean, you've always been a good writer, but it's especially noticeable now that your main channel has had a spike in content. The way you seamlessly weave textual/cultural/historical context into one? The pacing of your videos? *Chef's kiss* You also have a knack for fun/interesting imagery and wording. It's electric, is maybe the right word? I'm not a writer or a critic so I can't express my thoughts on this exactly how I want - but I love this video and everything else you've been putting out lately. Keep up the good work! ✊
Dragon Ball might have popularized manga in the US but the tradition of teen-friendly anime/manga had been established well before. If I look back at the cartoon I was watching as a child in the 80's, at least 75% (if not more) of them were either japanese or collaboration between japanese and european studios. True, I'm from Québec and those cartoon were dubbed in french so english speakers might not have been exposed to them as much as we did but I know that some of them had english version. The only thing is that we did really knew that those cartoons were from japan. Here are some title that you may (or may not) recongnize: Don Chuck Monogatari (le petit castor) Captain Harlock (albator) UFO Robo Grendizer (goldorak) Candy Candy Astro boy Captain Future (capitaine flam) Kerokko demetan (démétan la petite grenouille) Meiken Jorī (belle et sebastien) Uchū Densetsu Yurishīzu Sātīwan (Ulysse 31) Taiyō no Ko Esuteban (The mysterious cities of gold) and many more... The great revolution for the west, in the 90's with Akira, was the shattering of the perception that anime were only show for kids but also were for teen and adults ( well even if that perception remains to some degree).
ohh ya i'll need to watch this lol i love learning about all those old weird and grimey looking usually hyper violent OVA anime that used to be super common back in the day

In Italy, they published all the manga volumes and the second half, up to the final duel between Kakugo and his brother Harara, is crazy. (And yes his feelings for Horie will play a major role in that second half). You really should hunt down those missing volumes.

props to the mate who managed to get a rant request promoted to full video status
Its nice to see another take on this anime.
Bennett the sage covered this years ago.
But he covered it in English.
The protagonist's suit reminds me of Junk Warrior from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's.
All I remember about this one is BennettTheSage making one of his Anime Abandon videos about this, and how he said it wasn't reviewable because of the amount of censoring needed for that video to exist on youtube.
@asian dude Vroom vroom
Think about the obsurdity or that statement and remember that he's channel awesome. Nothing he says should be valued at all
@@drifter402 He hasn't worked for channel awesome in years, it was still ThatGuyWithGlasses when he worked for them.
Neither have any of the others
@Christopher Brown No. His opinion should be dismissed because he's a whiny idiot, who's unfair to the shows he reviews.
Aw man I love this
Honestly...that's a pretty slick power the hero has.
I loved it especially the song which was sung by Hironobu Kageyama who also did songs for DBZ
the pacing of your videos is really brisk and your writing accompanies this with the editing really well.
I'm just amazed that a patreon rant made this far that Digi would make an in-depth analysis on the subject matter. Good shit.
i never knew this existed im going to watch this right now thank you for this video
Perfectly articulated synopsis of the human condition and this anime I couldn't stop listening.
Here are some title that you may (or may not) recongnize:
Don Chuck Monogatari (le petit castor)
Captain Harlock (albator)
UFO Robo Grendizer (goldorak)
Candy Candy
Astro boy
Captain Future (capitaine flam)
Kerokko demetan (démétan la petite grenouille)
Meiken Jorī (belle et sebastien)
Uchū Densetsu Yurishīzu Sātīwan (Ulysse 31)
Taiyō no Ko Esuteban (The mysterious cities of gold)
and many more...
The great revolution for the west, in the 90's with Akira, was the shattering of the perception that anime were only show for kids but also were for teen and adults ( well even if that perception remains to some degree).
Oh jeez this looks really good, I hope they remake it!
ohh ya i'll need to watch this lol i love learning about all those old weird and grimey looking usually hyper violent OVA anime that used to be super common back in the day
tnx for the vid,, i am an anime fan since 90s,, i love old school anime gore,, and still love new animes today,, ill give this anime a try,, and probably the manga too,, nice review man,,
Oh wow our whole world is a scene from Apocalypse Zero
Bless you Digi.
I have a day off tomorrow and now something to do.
Not only is this interesting but you showed me a fighting game I didn't know about. Good shit.
I really like these analyses of anime from a perspective that I would never have the time to explore on my own.
Did anyone tell Digi that Log Horizon Season 3 is confirmed for October 2020?
he knows
This and more Overlord and next Slime and I'd be gel for the rest of the year
I am either gonna get him to rant about this or he better release a video soon....
because I have my doubts about Studio Deen doing this 3rd season now....
@@nhagan001 exactly because let's not forget Studio Deen threw Seven Deadly Sins at the wayside to work on some anime no one really remembers and because of that SDS animation quality went down and it was censored
based on the designs alone mostly the school outfits and monsters, I think Studio Trigger should do it
I've missed these scripted analytical videos. This one was really great, thx for the reccomendation
"Scanslations havent gotten past volume 7" this is like the only reason I wish I knew Japanese. I'm always scared my favorite manga is out there untranslated and i cant enjoy it.
Save Best Guy Ever!
save him
You mean Brad Garlinghouse?
what's going on with him?
@@yungboy4216 His channels has been hacked
i missed this type of video from you
the recent ones where it's just one shot of you talking is cool but these feel more engaging and fun to watch
In Italy, they published all the manga volumes and the second half, up to the final duel between Kakugo and his brother Harara, is crazy. (And yes his feelings for Horie will play a major role in that second half). You really should hunt down those missing volumes.
Nicola Sirci why don’t you scan and translate them? Post a link when you’ve finished. Grazie!
This OVA looks awesome.
the english translation of kakugos progress seems like a reference to pilgrims progress.
hey i still have my vhs of apoc zero, havent seen it in a while but when it came out i loved the animation quality and would watch it all the time.
Kal El. Wow, and I felt like a weeb for owning the dvd. Mada mada desu.
0:56 paused here to go watch it. HOLY SHIT this ova is amazing, Just when you think you've seen all the great anime gems. Its on internet archive surprisingly enough.
Hey, I know that one! I've been listening to the awesome opening of it for over a year now.
Wow I was surprised this was a rant. I assumed it was just an old school style vid where digi talks about something he cares about or wants to show over footage of said shows. But hey, if this is the way I can get the digibro content i so sorely missed im all for it
I loved this anime, just had to watch it after seeing some screencaps of it. Darkly absurd and pretty good at making you uncomfortable. And fantastic animation and background designs to boot.
This is awesome, thanks for finding it
props for the first line of the video answering the title
Man I really miss giant ribbons :(
