An ER Doc told me Sept 5, 2014 that the combination of my heart (history of Afib), my blood and alcohol was possibly a toxic mix. I quit alcohol, soda and coffee on the spot. I’ve had some soda, some decaf coffee and non alcoholic beer and wine since but no booze. Thankfully I wasn’t an alcoholic and drank sporadically prior to quitting. My highest encouragement to all of you brave enough to quit that which kills us.
Richard, I'd like to take a second and say thank you Sir! It never fails, If I am having a bad day or hard times fall on me I can always count on your content to cheer me up. I don't think how much you realize the joy you bring to everyone. Thank you and God bless Sir! Wooooo just Wooooo.....
Experimenting and understanding how those baits work is key and you are definitely helping us with that. You are a master in fishing science and we all love and thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. God bless you and your family.
I've caught lots of fish on a beetle spin. Its an old classic. Its awesome that you quit smoking, keep up the good work and keep the videos coming. We are here to watch. Take care.
Great tips Sir ... never get tired of watching your shows ...you are the man , I really like the way you respect all fish even the smallest little bluegill is beautiful to you , and to me now also ...thanks for teaching us right Fish'n Machine.
Caught some good slabs on beetle spin yesterday. Green beetle and gold spinner was putting em in the boat. Thanks for the videos Richard. Merry Christmas
That first fish was a ditch pickle. I heard someone call a little largemouth that and I bout died laughing. lol My favorite was a small 1" Beetle Spin in Catawba worm color that was black with a chartreuse stripe down the top on both sides. Off the shelf. I never thought big bluegill could resist that bait. I mean I caught untold numbers of "Theyyyy…" inducing sunfish. I'm dating myself but that was in the late 1970s on the lakes in East Tennessee. It was good times. I'm pleased to be the one to notice you had stopped smoking. I couldn't help noticing the chewing gum and I can do math. (2 + 2 = Richard stopped smoking) 🙂 Richard, thank you so much for all you do. 🖖
Happy to hear that you laid the cigs down. I had developed a dry cough due to smoking and ended up having to have open heart surgery. My heart was pumping 20%. Had my surgery on 11/11/22. Can’t wait to get back out there on them Crappie. Peppermint is actually not good for you. Try a toothpick or regular chewing gum. Good luck! I know it’s tough but give it a few months and you’ll feel so much better. God bless
Thanks for another great video Mr Gene. Sauger season is just kicking off up my way, any chances of any more Sauger videos? It's my kids first year jigging for em from the boat!
Thank you Richard Gene I sure appreciate all your videos. I look about everyday for a new one. I just got my shirt in. It’s my new favorite. I wear it to all the important family functions lol.
I haven't had the chance to do much fishing for the last several years 😫 but I plan on buying a boat in the coming months and changing that. I have really enjoyed watching your channel and hope that it has added to my hillbilly knowledge enough that I can have some success. Growing up I never had much experience other than live stock ponds .
Thanks Richard for another good trip and nice video. Good tips on the spin jigs. When if started fishing many years ago, I always had some of the Betts spinners, even after I saw the Stump Jumpers and Jimmy Houston rigs. Really appreciate you taking us along with you on this trip. God bless ya'll and have a blessed day my friend.
Richard those baits have been around before mine and your time! Don't know why they are over looked now!! Some nice white crappie!! LIVE FOR THE THUMP MY FRIEND. How is momma Sue doing??
I believe the grub part of a beetle spin was the first artificial lure I ever used… It was the most god awful gaudy green color you’ve ever seen and the water was clear as bath water… But I found it laying on the bank and hooked it on probably a size 4 Aberdeen hook and I was reeling it just right above the submerged grass and they ate it up…😂 I’ve been hooked on bass fishing ever since… lol Now I’ve got a ton of fishing stuff and target several different species of fish… I’m like you, if it’s got eyes and a tail it’s a goodun to me…😆
Richard, Hang in there on trying to give up smoking. I know how difficult it can be. I just took it one day at a time. After about six weeks it became a whole lot easier due to the fact that I started to realize how badly they smelled. It's been 16 years now since I quit and that was after smoking approximately 2 packs a day for 38 years. Keep it going. Bye the way love the videos and your wisdom. May you and Mama Sue as well as your family and friends have a wonderful and blessed holidays.🎄
Another slab.....whooooo. you are the greatest all around fishin personality I have ever watched. And I've watched them all these 62 years I've been on God's great earth. Just always a days enjoyment listening to you Richard. Love the quirks and flashbacks...lol. on your last vid I commented on I got a message with your image requesting a telegram response. Just not sure it's a spam. If it was you...sorry for not responding back. Maybe we will cross paths someday for real. And go catch a couple of good-uns. GOD bless you and your family always and like I always say sir.....Keep Slangin and Keep Hangin.
yet another fantastic video with information WE can use. most of us started out using a spinner bait of some kind. My go to for a long time was the Mr Twister white curly tail and caught so many bass, BG and catfish with it. wasn't the crappie dude I am today and havn't used these much but will now.
Great video Richard. You put out a video sometime back about how to rig them little spinner's and change the blades. And it works I cought a lot more fish thanks to you buddy. Love the videos.
Another really great video. You mentioned eating a lot of candy since you quit smoking. My wife commented a week or so ago how much better your voice sounds too.
When I was growing up I use to hammer big crappie with rooster tail I just quit using them though they get hung up too easy fishing around structure that treble hook lol ....good one man wooooooooo!!!
Just remove them, you can either remove them completely or just cut off 1 or 2 of the bends. If you remove them completely you can use split rings to add a small single trailer hook. Because it's not on the shelf doesn't mean it can't be made nor work.
Of course, brother, I caught several fish tonight using my go to rig with nightcrawlers. 7 inch leader with a size 1 baitholder hook tied to lead line. A split shot 1/4 inch above where leader is tied to main line. Letting line settle after cast. Popping rod tip letting it settle after each pop. This rig gets crushed by fish. High tide came into the river and afterwards caught a ton of fish 😊
I bought 75 of the spinners for like $6 a few years ago and some packs of Colorado,Willow,French,Indiana (and have an idea for propeller blades I'm going to try) blades in sizes 00,0,1,and 2 in nickle and brass both smooth and hammered.I made up a bunch instead of doing what I used to for years, swapping the spinners from jig to jig.I'm going to be ordering more here pretty directly and more blades then powder paint the blades different colors.I also use them on Roadrunners to add a 2nd blade... I also pour, paint, and tie my own Crappie Spinnerbaits and I do all my jigs (same as spinnerbaits for Bass but smaller). Sort of like these better but they're a lot more time consuming to make. Different blades also require different retrieve speeds to have them spin.A Colorado blade is the slowest with the Willow the fastest. It's not a big difference but there is a difference. Also the amount of lift a jig has when a blade is spinning is different between the types of blades too,Colorado has more lift and a Willow the least.Same goes for the fall rate. A Indiana falls between them in all categories.
I'm glad to hear you've quit smoking. I smoked 3 packs a day. Took me two years to quit. Feel much better now. I used plastic forks and spoons to chew. Lol They don't have the calories that the candy had. Have a blessed day!!!
Richard I have to tell you I love watching you fish and give us great advice! I use your techniques and they sure have helped. Been searching for the Sowbelly rods,… is the best place to get those from Facebook? Thanks for all you do,… wooooo
I am wondering what a bigger blade would do with this set up. I could see sometimes you would want the fish to react when they are just sitting around not hitting anything
They create more flash, vibration, etc. (and other effects I mention in my personal comment).I use size 00,0,1 and 2,the ones on RGTFM's look to be size 0 Colorado and maybe a 1 Willow.
I'm poor folk, but i'd give a 100 dollar bill to go fishing with The Fishing Machine for a day. 🐟🐟🐟🐟
If Richard Gene can quit smoking- I can quit smoking... let's go! Woo!!!
edit - for anyone interested, no cigs since 12/31 - we can ALL do it, woo!
Dang right bubba! As easy as it was to start, its just as easy to quit! Dont dip!
You got this 💪
An ER Doc told me Sept 5, 2014 that the combination of my heart (history of Afib), my blood and alcohol was possibly a toxic mix. I quit alcohol, soda and coffee on the spot. I’ve had some soda, some decaf coffee and non alcoholic beer and wine since but no booze. Thankfully I wasn’t an alcoholic and drank sporadically prior to quitting. I'm considering an honest attempt
Everyone can.
So glad to hear you quit smoking. I did also 5 year's ago and feel so much better. Love your videos keep them coming GOD BLESS ♥️

Great video Richard Gene, Watched every minute of it!. It is hard to beat a Beetle Spin style bait! Appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us Sir.
Happy to hear that you laid the cigs down. I had developed a dry cough due to smoking and ended up having to have open heart surgery. My heart was pumping 20%. Had my surgery on 11/11/22. Wish you would do some catfishing live , great video Richard
Thanks for another great video Mr Gene. Sauger season is just kicking off up my way, any chances of any more Sauger videos? It's my kids first year jigging for em from the boat!
The best beginner lure ever. Fish can leave it alone, the hook I'd easy to set and it's pretty snagless to boot! Give these to your kids!
Thank you Richard Gene I sure appreciate all your videos. I look about everyday for a new one. I just got my shirt in. It’s my new favorite. I wear it to all the important family functions lol.

Awesome tips for a great bait.
Thx Richard Gene! Great video
Great info Richard, thank you
Great video!!!! Thanks a bunch for the explanation. I'm sure that's gonna make a difference for me!!!
Anybody who fishes creeks should know of the Beatle spin. Black with yellow stripes is a classic.
I live in Alabama and I would give anything to fish with you. It would be a dream come true
Best outro on UA-cam

Lots of good knowledge.
Thanks Richard!
I change out the beetle for a Mr. Twister curly tail jig my go to at any new spot for LMB, crappie, bluegill.

Another great video! How do you decide to run a beetle spin vs a regular jig? Just keep throwin' until the right combo triggers the bite?
They! Thanks for the tips! WOOOO!!!
Great video thanks for sharing and what size of blades are those?
Richard I have to tell you I love watching you fish and give us great advice! I use your techniques and they sure have helped. Been searching for the Sowbelly rods,… is the best place to get those from Facebook? Thanks for all you do,… wooooo
thanks Gene!
Thanks for sharing. 👍
Thanks for all you’re doing for the sport Gene!
What size are those blades at 14:50?
TIA
Richard Gene are you going to the catfish and crappie conference in February?
Great vid as usual. Where do you get the optional blades?
Try Amazon's for your different size blades for beetle spins. I recently bought some and been changing mine out to try.
Very good info 17:38
i love fishing a beetlespin
Who makes the landing net you use for crappie and where can it be purchased?
The best.
Nice work, and get sugar free. but enjoy so glad you stopped smoking we need you around to make us vidoes and keep momma Sue happy.

With the farmed Catfish coming out of the Mississippi Delta . The Catfish populations dont have very many predators .
