Virus TI2 'Darkstar' + Torso S-4 (48 min Ambient Soundscape Improvisation)

  • I recently packed all my eurorack/modular stuff away on my spare desk in the studio, so that I could do some more focused and minimal setups using different synths etc for a while. With this one I'm using the Virus Darkstar and Torsa S-4 (single track, looping/overdubbing) to create some evolving soundscapes on the fly. Please excuse some pops and clicks sometimes, it's due to the S-4 looper track de-coupled playback and recording heads (playback is at half-speed), sometimes it creates a glitch when the heads overlap while there's audio input, it gets better further into the video when I understood what was happening.
    Audio FX were a combination of internal Virus FX (mostly the delay), reverb from the Eventide H90 (custom dual preset), and sometimes the delay/verb from the S-4.

    If you enjoyed the video/content. Please consider liking/subscribing, it really helps the channel and pushes the algorithm a little. UA-cam is really bad lately for AD income for everyone it seems, false ID claims on videos and other cr&p aren't helping, so any extra likes and subs are very much appreciated. Thank you!

      Aside from liking/subscribing, does commenting on a video help to push the YT algorithm? I'm pretty new to the YT business, and recently had an automated ID claim on a video for the first time. I was very confused, as it appeared to me that the main coincidence was an a-minor chord. Now, I'm scratching my head if there are people who have a copyright on the a-minor chord... 🤔

      @@MinorRandomNoise I'm not aware of comments affecting the algorithm, but who knows! Yeah these auto ID claims are a pain and unfortunately you'll have to deal with them sometimes. Just dispute as soon as possible and mention that it's entirely your own original work, and that you can prove it/own the original project files.

    Wish I got one before they became 'vintage' and stupid pricing. There was a point in between you could grab one at a good price. Never understood what the Virus was until it was too late. LOL. Cool demo.

    Awesome ! I had the Polar and the B back in the days . They ruled the end 90's and 00's as best synth's. It's so sad they unplugged the support affter the TI2 serie's. I 've no regret that I 've sold them. There are much better synth's these days. But when I see your vid,it does hurt,..a little..;)

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  3 місяці тому +4

      Are there much better synths these days though? IMO the Virus TI2 still has no match, it's even still much more powerful than a lot of synths today - many of which seem vastly underpowered and often lacking decent polyphony, multitimbrality and short on essential sound design features. I guess this just goes to show how powerful the Motorola DSP chip was used in the Virus. Today we have FPGA chips, which seem good but maybe not as powerful and I've heard they are very hard to program. I'm not even sure what I could compare my Virus to in my studio, it's not really outclassed by anything else I have, including my Super Gemini and Waldorf Iridium, nor can either of those really sound like the Virus. But yeah I agree, it's sad they'll be no more Virus synths. I just hope we get much better chips and powerful synths some time in the near future, because there aren't too many synths to get excited about today and most come with limitations that leave you scratching your head in 2024.

    • @TrillianMilesMusic
      @TrillianMilesMusic 3 місяці тому

      @@stateazure Oh, I agree with you that in 2024 much more is expected from those synthesizers that are currently on the market. Everyone copies each other. But real innovation is lacking. It seems like everything has been at a standstill for a long time. Maybe the Osmose is a step,but I don't like the sounds.( I could be wrong because I only heard the demo's on YT.) I replaced my Polar with the Novation Summit. I have no regrets about that. Especially with the onboard FX, it has been my favorite synth for a while. But knowing myself, there's a good chance I'll get a TI2 someday. I'm just so afraid that if it breaks down (which I've been reading about quite often lately), you'll be in quite a bit of trouble because there's no support.

    • @stateazure
      @stateazure  3 місяці тому +1

      @@TrillianMilesMusic The Omose has some nice sounds, and the keybed is absolutely wonderful to play, but the synth engine is a nightmare. Arturia Polybrute 12 takes a very similar MPE expressive keybed and puts that on a Polybrute synth, that's really quite exciting for me since I love that keybed. Unfortunately I can't really afford one at the moment :) Summit is great, I still have one, though that synth took at least 2X FGPA chips I believe, but it's a lovely synth with probably the best internal reverb I ever heard on a synth. Regarding the Virus, even if you had one that breaks, you would be legally in your right to use the new Virus chip emulator (and full Virus emulation), it's 100% a Virus in software (I've not tried it myself, but hear good things).

    • @TrillianMilesMusic
      @TrillianMilesMusic 3 місяці тому

      @@stateazure Yeah, Gotta dive into that. A virus as a Vst(aax in my case) would be perfect. The Polybruut12 .Man,..I've seen some vids now. Gotta say,yes Love it. But the price,..Man,man,man, .. I mean hardware synths is my passion,..but.,, pfff.. I can sell my Waldorf Iridium keys,I might be half way. But I love that synth so much.

    this is great . we have listened to your music for years now.
    our home schooled son wishes to set up as an ambient producer as a learning project and to set off his future business in music and arts. All inspired by you!
    He has been playing for a while on his PC. Now we are putting together his business plan.
    can you point us to a tutorial that explains how to copyright and collect playing royalites?
    Ive watched a lot of videos but its as clear as mud to me!
    Do you have to register with PRS? Use a service like CD Baby? Or just upload to youtube and bandcamp? Perhaps spotify?
    He's particularly intersted in Sync licencing as he really want to get into Film and TV and as modern people so, social media music scoring.
    Your note on content ID strikes makes it a little daunting as a business proposition, but its what he wants to do . Start now, earn and build up his kit from earnings.
    Any pointers will be very greatfully received.
    Thanks

      That's wonderful to hear that I could inspire your son to want to make a career from composing! Unfortunately my knowledge in royalties, sync licensing and such is very limited. I myself haven't registered with a PRS (yes, you should register). I believe PRS is only going to be necessary for sync licensing, stock library stuff, or anytime anyone takes your music and plays it live at shows, events, radio, TV etc etc. I've had very few tracks played live or on radio, so I never bothered. I make my income via UA-cam/Google Adsense through the advertising, which is all calculated and collected automatically once you can monetize the channel. I also make money from Bandcamp sales and Spotify, Apple and other streaming and online music stores (no PRS needed for those either). If I were him (and I should do this myself), I would start composing the music for sync/libraries right now and start building that catalog ready to go, register for PRS, and do more research into all this. There are a ton of UA-cam videos and info on sync licensing, and to be honest, it was way too much for me and very confusing. But I would start asap before AI takes over this industry. AI Music is already good enough to put a lot of composers out of business already, so I wouldn't waste time.

      Thats a lovely, and very helpful reply, thank you.
      I was also confused about PRS! Mot sure if its him or me being home educated.
      AI is a concern. Fingers crossed that the human touch is still to be appreciated.

      @@darrenelkins5923 My personal thoughts on AI, are that, people will generally always appreciate and respect human-made music, just like we continue to do so for many hand-crafted things. But it's still going to be an issue, there are companies that will for sure choose an AI track instead, because it'll be cheaper, faster and pretty much exactly what they want without them having to search and listen to many tracks trying to find the perfect fit. I've already heard a few AI tracks, that are much, much better than anything I could ever do (I'm talking full songs with appropriate vocals, pop, rock etc). I've not yet heard really good AI instrumental music. Anyway, glad I could help! PRS is probably something I'll have to register for soon, because I do plan to start making music for stock libraries etc because YT income is getting worse and worse as time goes on, not just for me, but for many content creators.

      I hold the same view on AI. With some hope, of course.
      My daughter has art skills and its not really her choice to pursue art, more a destiny. She is 11.
      Historically the hand made chair has been valued over the factory made one. Although the majority choose the mass produced one because the price of the hand made one is not competitive for the value, the hand made item usually has some soul.
      Possibly means fewer Artisians.
      Music particularly, has long suffered the lack of soul, through factory like commercialisation. Unless a little effort is spent seeking out human talent. Effort made somewhat easier with the Internet.
      There is certainly some amazing AI based tools. Presently, they all need a bit of a tweak from an Artisan. I think it will remain so.
      Its probably more important to keep the Internet control free than worry about AI!
      - and to learn how to work with AI too.
      Perhaps chatGPT can tell me how to ensure my sons music is protected and revenues collected. Its that or another 48hrs of trying to sift the wheat from the chaff on advice videos.
      I just hope GPT is not stealing my thoughts.
      Then again, we might write a tune about that...
      :)
