Professor N.T. Wright gives the opening lecture of our Summer School 2016. The teaching theme for the week was The Victory of the Cross. (Lecture 1 of 10)
It became obvious to me that the simple messages I heard in childhood were insufficient to explain the various issues involved in the cross and resurrection. This teaching helps me think more about the additional dimensions. Thank you.
Great Stuff Professor Wright. The atonement of the cross shows that God is both Just and Merciful. Instead of killing our first parents that day, He instead waits thousands of years till the cross with this question over His head that He was not a Just God, but rather merciful. Like Satan declaring to God at the tree in the garden, "You can be Just or merciful, but not both." Jesus (Rom 3:24-28) on the cross propitiates the cross and by it declares that if we will exercise our faith in that act and in Him, we won't have to die, He (as God) will take the loss. Thereby showing that God was just and the justifier of those who would believe in Jesus and what He did. His gospel (our ministry of Reconcilation) has power because of God's Justice. (Rom 1:16-17). It is what has defeated Satan and expunge sin from the cosmos and thereby restore all things, which is the message of the book of Revelation. God Bless.
I tend to think when things are put to rights, when the new heavens and new earth come in fullness, it will be the way things were always meant to be as seen in that beautiful picture in Genesis 1 and Isaiah 11. No violence to be found among humans or nonhumans. All of creation will stop groaning. May it come quickly. The fall of Babylon will be welcomed indeed!
6 Through this chapter, we will walk in a desert without landmarks. But we will go up to the end, because the Angel of God is our guide. God said to Israel: "Behold, I send an angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place that I have prepared for thee". Daniel, Ezekiel, Revelation and many books of the Bible are stories of symbols and riddles. And just as the Bible ends in symbols and riddles, the Church will also end in an atmosphere of symbols and riddles. 5 Jehovah God has given me this chapter on dreams and visions for the Saints. And like the Bible, this sermon will serve many peoples. And at the appointed time, it will place the Church in a new dimension. And I am telling you about it so that you may be prepared for it. 7 I wanted to give this sermon in a single chapter like Kacou 146, but having two different aspects, I thought it good to give it in two parts. I am going to speak here of the instructions on prophetism for a return to the original faith, and then I will speak of dreams and visions in a second chapter. It will be like the two Tables of the Law of Moses or the two Testaments of the Bible. They will be dependent on each other like a bow and its arrow. Dreams and visions are the arrows of prophetism.
God in Christ enters into a world saturated with violence, a world in which people are victimized again and again-the poor neglected, women beaten and raped, children abused, the earth plundered, prophets murdered- so that the order of our society and our world may not be disturbed. When Jesus disturbs that order- announces God’s forgiveness of sinners, promises the future for the poor, welcomes outcasts and strangers, calls all to repentance and a new way of life characterized by love of God and others- when Jesus does this in a world built from its foundation stone of violence, then it is no arbitrary religious doctrine but profoundest truth that Jesus MUST suffer, the boundless love of God must clash with a world built on hostility and violence. As the risen Jesus explains to the disciple on the way to Emmaus, did not the Christ have to suffer all this and enter into his glory (Luke 24:26)…. Jesus lived and died for us all. But God raised the crucified Jesus and make him the chief cornerstone of a new humanity that no longer espouses the way of violence, that no longer needs scapegoat , that no longer wills to live at the expense of victims, that no longer worships a bloodthirsty God, that is no longer interested in legitimation of violence, but that follows Jesus in the power of a new Spirit.... Wright has misunderstood penal substitution and the significance of Christ's shed blood. When dealing with this he never engages with scholars like Leon Morris. Wright maintains that the shed blood represents cleansing rather than a life laid down in death.
Jesus was God so his blood did cleanse the world. But he was also a man, so his murder was a sin. And his resurrection was a miracle opening up a new creation.
Bible is not telling us abstract philoshophical concepts, we must read it from the very beginning of the story, how God of Abraham came to earth to save his people from egypt, and finally made in flesh, our King resurected, son of God, our God, for all peaple Gentiles and Jews. Gospels only openes up when we strart from language of tabernacle, of Moise's cosmovision, abandoning platonic one. Even history of Jesus on earth must be unveiled by his Resurection, point of Apostole's view, time from then the New Covenant is written. There's the timeline Paul's met Jesus, same timeline for us, gentile, there we meet Jesus resurected.
