We were camping in a pop up tent in Upper Michigan and two black bears came to our camp site. Our cooler was locked in our car but I had showered earlier and used honey suckle shampoo. One of the bears slit the canvas directly above my head in the middle of the night! It was terrifying because the bear came to the door and tried getting into the pop up. We eventually were able to escape and get into our neighbor's hard top camper. But the bear came back and sniffed by my head all night!

You can deter predators from entering your camp site with a portable electric bear fence. Small kit that brings huge peace of mind.

We are in Georgia and camped in our pop up in the North Georgia mountains at Fort Mountain SP. We had a couple of encounters with bears while there, one visiting the site next to us right after the campers left out. I had a Pet Corrector air spray can to scare them away. I also had also purchased smelly bags to keep our toothpaste and other things in because like you, I had done the research, read and heard horrible stories, and was a little anxious. Thanks for your content. We love to see others out enjoying their pop ups!

We’ve had a couple of encounters with black bears in the mountains of AZ. Both times it was night. Both times we were in our truck camper getting ready for bed. One kept its distance, but her cub was all over our campsite. The other time the bear reached up to the camper window with his claw. Scary. But they were just being curious. No harm. Just some fear on my part. Had nightmares for awhile.

A friend of mine had her Van ransacked last year by a bear in Mammoth. She left it unlocked with food in it. The bear came back 3 nights in a row to check if it was unlocked. Thank you for the tips.

Just stayed in bear country in our newly purchased (used) PUP in Tahoe. Had a very close encounter first night saw three bears one within about 4 feet from the door of the camper about 8pm. We had a Mama and a cub not too long after stroll through. Anyway… night one didn’t sleep well. Night two we cleared everything remotely sented out of the trailer and into the car and slept much better. We’ve stayed in bear country prior with no sightings, honestly they wonder all over at night and you’ll never hear them with no issues. Once these bears heard us they were gone and never came back.

We might not have slept well with a close encounter, either! 😬 But what a story to tell. 😊 Glad nothing happened to you guys.

I do have a question on dry food like bread , chips , etc it’s been since1989 since I owned a pop up camper .after that I had a travel trailer for years till 2012. so I didn’t have problems with this. But would you recommend keeping things like that in the car or would it be safe in a pop up camper. I honestly don’t remember what I did in the past. I am thinking about getting back into camping but with a pop up just because of the vehicle I have. And I don’t want to have something so big anymore. Your advice would be helpful. Thank you .

Everything with any kind of smell needs to be in the vehicle or bear box. It’s the same instructions to hard side campers as well, I believe.

Thankfully you got through Yellowstone without any hiccups. I visited in 2015; a very long and moving quickly day getting to every site cause we weren't staying in park. UA-cam algorithm hasn't been showing all your recent vids in feed unfortunately. Anyway my 2 encounters with bears included one pushing on my tent once I think over food crumbs and the other time one crawling all over my vehicle trying to get inside. Bears will seek out anything haha!

Wow! Curious if you ate food in the tent? Where did you camp? We noticed our vacation videos haven't been doing as well, it's very obvious when the algorithm picks a video to push, usually tips and tricks or a tour video.

@@AdventuresinPopUps Yeah... did eat in the tent beforehand; some goldfish crackers. It was in the Monrovia hills of Los Angeles (they get bears visiting homes frequently). Little black bears, but scary nonetheless when a figures paws are pushing the tent in. I've learned my lesson and found out just how loud a yell I can produce haha.

There is a better chance of getting struck by lightning than attacked by a bear, this includes grizzlies.

I’ve camped in bear country in tents before but our family is camping in Shenandoah National Park in our pop up. I’m only nervous now because I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and worry about them. Am I making a mistake taking SMALL children?

There was a lady at Rocky Mountain NP with like 5kids, tent camping, and the youngest was a small infant! Just keep them close by and be sure to clean up food messes. Kids are great for making noise to scare off any bears. 😊
