  • If you hear a bubbling, gurgling or boiling sound coming from under the hood, it almost always means you have a coolant issue. It may be as simple replacing your radiator cap or it could be a much deeper issue.
In this video, Josh shows you how to locate and diagnose the sound and how to either fix it or determine what steps to take next. This is definitely something you can do so follow along and save that green!!

    This is a great video.
You forgot to mention that if the car is not overheating and the coolant reservoir fluid is boiling that it could be that one of your radiator motor fans isn’t working. This was the case when I took my Honda in today. It has two radiator fans so you could hear cooling noise but when you looked at the second fans it’s still. My radiator lid was busted to and had to be replaced. I’m just pleased it wasn’t the head gasket 😊

@@brettjolliff ok Brett, but it's not because any significant "U" or "S" shaped bend in the hoses or maybe the radiator (which is full of them) could theoretically not allow the simple elevation of one end of the vehicle to fully purge the system of all of the trapped air. Also known as an "air trap". At least that's what my common sense told me, but if the guy says it worked for him then great.

Today i had that bubbling issue for the first time ever. Tried taking my 97 camry to the mountains and we got about halfway up the parkway, when i started hearing a chuggong sound different from normal. Now i get i was going uphill into the mountains but still enough to say ok maybe this is too much lets pull off at the picnic area. Turned off the car in concern of overheating, thats when i heard the bubbles and saw it in the overflow tank. So i was like ok lets let her cool down so my son and I walked around to let it cool off. Checked the fluids beyond the radiator cause of the heat still and decided to head back down the mountain. We took it easy coming back (3hrs) but i think i may have killed the thermostat. Had the fans running the whole time and had the heat on full to displace some of the heat. Hoping there is no bad damage.😅🙏

Shops sell anti freeze but coolant has a higher boiling point. Bottles offer little information so many miss it. Honda Type 2 Coolant for example has Boiling point: 131.1C Freezing point: -36.6C according to an importer. Fluids also have a higher boiling point under pressure. So you may run into trouble with just anti-freeze and a leaking cap.
I also like to mention that temperature gauges are mounted at a low point in the cooling system and therefore more an indicator for having reached the normal operating temperature. Boiling hot water will stay on top and when the high temperature gets registered the fan switch will activate the fan.
Use coolant with metal protectors that are no silicates, Like Honda Type 2. Wearing the seals, waterpump and thermostat, mainly by silicate is, indirectly, a cause of overheating. Always look down into the opening when safely filling, with a small light, to see if the thermostat is closed and in one piece. The metal alloy can dissolve and fall apart. The temperature gauge on the instrument panel can tell if the thermostat opens at operating temperature.

I had an interesting time after replacing my radiator.
Even when parked on a hill, it would pump the coolant right out the top of the radiator while the engine was running, and the coolant was boiling when it was running, but the temp gauge stayed where it should be, never overheated. Went through gallons of coolant until I realized I forgot to plug in my radiator fans. Problem solved, but still has me scratching my head

I've got an interesting cooling problem that has me a little stumped, my Honda civic just got a new OEM thermostat and radiator cap as well as a coolant flush and replace and it works perfectly fine 99% of the time. It had a lot of irregularities in the temperature before the work. Now it stays at the same temperature almost always but then will randomly spike in temperature for about 30 seconds to a minute then immediately cool down and go back to normal. Last time it happened coolant reservoir overflowed and spilled out. Fans and fan switch work fine and thermostat opens fine in boiling water. I did a hydrocarbon block test for a head gasket leak 3 times and it detected no combustion gases which made me happy. No white smoke or obvious leaks anywhere and no real coolant loss. No one I've talked to really knows what the problem is and I don't either, do you have any ideas? Thanks

Update for anyone who read this, turns out my condenser was pressed against my radiator from an old accident apparently which was adding heat to the system. The main problem though was the AC was only turning on the fans for short bursts of time instead of it being on constantly. This was leading to overheating spikes at low speeds or stops while the AC was on. Bypassing the fan switches and having it on all the time during city driving seems to have solved the problem completely. As well as moving the condenser away from the radiator.

Hello, thanks for the video. I have a question. Can you use g12+ coolant in Japanese cars (I live in central Europe, and we use g11-g13+ as a standard). The interesting thing is I have a suzuki sx4 and the manual recommends the suzuki coolant (a phosphate HOAT OR similar ethylene glycol-based one), BUT this car was also manufactured as a Fiat Sedici model too. Its manual just refrains from silicated coolant use and recommends Fiat's coolant😂 Some people say filling the wrong coolant is bad for the engine-water pump... but there are two things: in Hungary most coolant bottles state (suitable for every passenger car -alloy friendly-or cooling systems) plus I have filled my previous suzuki with the same G12+ coolant of the same brand. it didn't freeze or lose coolant even in hours of highway driving during really hot summer time 🤷🏻‍♂️ what do you think? thanks for reading :) 👋🏻

There's a radiator fan switch usually on your thermostat housing which senses the coolant temperature and turns on the fan when it gets hot, could be a bad fan switch or a bad relay or fuse going to the switch. The fan switch went bad on my car and I could only turn on the fans with my AC button, replacing that fan switch and that fixed it

Does the coolant level go down at all (other than the blowing out the reservoir)? Does the vehicle behave for a while after refilling coolant? Slow coolant leaks can be annoying to find, but once the level decreases to a certain point, the engine boils the remaining coolant and blows it out.

Hello i have a 2008 mazda bt 50 disel i had a engine rebuild because it had a bad head gasket and it was overheating i pressure tested the block and head as well as had them decked. They are all good had the radiator cleaned and its all put together now and on inital start i have the rad cap open and it seems no pressure is building or bubbles but after it warms up after it reaches operating temp i open the overflow tank and see little bubbles coming out of the hose in the overflow tank . It does not loose any coolant even after driving for 30 minutes and when i open the cap when its cold it seems to not loose coolant and engine does not run hot. I am runnig without a thermostat can that be the cause? Or what am i missing

The only way stuff gets into overflow is thru the radiator cap. Wouldn’t hurt to replace that but if you’re not losing coolant I wouldn’t worry about it

When i start my car with cold engine eith radiator cap open air bubbles keep coming out and when i slightly race the cold engine the coolant jumps out of radiator filling hole. Please anyone tells me what wrong with my car. There is no coolant lose and it keeps stable. Also i noticed very thin layer of oil on coolant surface in reservior bottle. No moisture observed in engine oil. Please somebody help me. My car is honda civic 2005 with D15 engine. Thanks

Does coolant surge out immediately on startup? Even when cold?
If so that sounds like a head gasket leak
If not, when air and coolant heat up they expand and will overflow if the rad cap is off. But that’s normal

What if coolant is coming out the coolant breather hose?

    • @BudgetMechanicHawaii
      @BudgetMechanicHawaii  6 місяців тому

Like a lot is coming out? If hot coolant is getting out the breather, your rad cap is failing or the coolant is overheated

you keep saying coolant, can water be used as a substitute as it is a cooling liquid?

    • @BudgetMechanicHawaii

In emergencies it can. But never long term, it doesn’t cool as efficiently and will make your components rust eventually

I was having same issue with my 2015 dodge dart... I was loosing coolant and tried to overheat like in the 3 quarters temperature and turn out to be the reservoir cap being broken from the top of the inside seal... I bought a new cap and no more overheating but I think I overfill it the next day because I saw coolant on the hoses but the reservoir tank its at the full level.. why did it leak or throw the overfill coolant thru the hoses or hose?
