  • Running some Hudsons! Did I mention I love Hudsons? In this video:
    Lionel 226e Pre War Hudson
    Lionel 763e Pre War Hudson
    Lionel 2046 Post War Hudson
Lionel 773 Post War Hudson *Update! This is the 1964 version. I erroneously referred to it as the 1950 version in the video. Has the 1950 Tender but it is the 1964 773. Still awesome!
    Action starts at 1:50.
    Enjoy!

Wow !! Thanks for sharing these awesome Hudson’s. The 1950 773 is my 1st favorite, then the 226e with the Baldwin wheels.... heck, all four of them are my favorite.... I have a 2046... one of my prize possessions. Thank you for sharing and tell us how you built your layout. One of thee best ever.

I am just going back to the old days of RBP. Wow your layout has progressed and looks so good now. Especially with the two big bridges. It would be cool if you could do another video like this, that is if you have any new Hudson’s

Between the smoke and warmed up motors it has to smell very post war in there. The best Lionel is the run that Dad,uncle or grandfather gave you regardless of monetary value.

The Hudson is a favorite of mine as well. I have a 1937 (specifically) built 700-E with a set of prewar scale freight cars. I know it is the 1937 model specifically because of certain casting differences and of course no lubricator access screw underneath. This is not particularly 100% trustworthy as the chassis and boilers were interchangeable, but the casting details are unmistakable. I have a gunmetal 763-E freight set (w/Vanderbuilt tender like yours) and a 1941 black 763-E which I inherited from my father, with the coal tender of course. I also have the K-Line scale Hudson which did not have the cruise control in it's TMCC so I added an ERR upgrade so now, it can creep and not stall. I used to own the 1991 700-E Lionel re-issue (#5340) but sold it. When I bought it, I remember the big fuss among collectors was "Why make a scale model and then put very under-sized pilot wheels under the front?" So Lionel quickly made a scale-wheeled replacement truck available for separate sale for the more scale operator. I always had the scale-wheeled pilot truck on mine, the other truck stayed in the box. The uniqueness about the 1991 700-E was that this was the first time Lionel used a new die for the locomotive since the original die was worn out, showing a lot of wear by then. Take a close look at the grey #785 Hudson with the spoked drivers. This was the last time the original die was used. As for the scale tender, Lionel was able to reuse it's die as it did not see nearly as much use, none in fact after WWII since the 1950 tender was smaller and 1964-66 Hudsons, well, let's just say Lionel really did drop the ball here, but they corrected it in 1983 with the introduction of the 783 Hudson which looked almost identical to the 1950 model. I'll stop here. Yep, I love the Hudson as well.

Dude really nice. Very nice….hey just as an FYI as collector of Corp. items, I too have a 226E. This is actually a Berkshire. Prewar Lionel didn’t have an 8W mechanism available hence the use of the Swiss watch 6W mechanism pulled from the 224E, 225E, etc

Almost hypnotic and altogether outstanding. I love my 226e, a great puller and that firebox glow is such a nice touch. All great engines though. Thanks for sharing: great work on the layout and the video presentation!

I want a Hudson so bad in my O Gauge fleet. Even though there's no way I'd be able to afford a 773 or 763E, I'd be more than happy with any of the MPC era Hudsons. Usually it's a toss up between the 783 and 784.

If you love Hudsons, keep an eye out for the unsung (for lack of a better term) Lionel 2056. Only made for one year (1952) as a dodge around Federal price controls imposed during the Korean War I lucked into one at a train show several years ago. I call it "The Bruiser," it's slightly bigger and heavier than the more common 2055. No Magne-Traction due to wartime magnet shortages but let me tell you it doesn't need MagneTraction, it'll pull up to 15 modern cars with no problems. Maybe more, but 15 is all I've got room for on the layout! MagneTraction wouldn't work on the nickle-silver track I use anyway!
Most folks at train shows walk past them without a second look. Don't! It's one of the best purchases I've ever made!

I think we have what I now realize is a Hudson. Does say lionel Lines on the Tender and has a 067 model number on the bottom, and a little metal lever on the top. Not super great condition, but does move, though maybe a little sticky, though maybe it's just I was trying to go slow, and not fast like in this video. Not sure exactly what we have, tbh.

Step one check it for warpage prewar die cast is horrible for it and it is possible in extreme cases that if uts to badly warped that you can take them apart and not get them back together

Chris, I absolutely love Hudsons! Ever since I was a kid, running my dads American Flyer Hudson around the track, I have wanted one for myself. I really want a scale version of it and currently run mostly MTH equipment. My question is, do you have any experience with MTH’s Hudson’s? Also would you recommend buying an earlier version and upgrading the electronics or is it just worth it to buy a later version?
    Thanks!

    Hello
Great video! I have a 773 Hudson from friend who inherited a very large collection. Its not a 1950 model but it looks a little different than the 1964 version. How can I identify the year made?
    Thanks
    Bob

    • @RBPTrains
      @RBPTrains  2 роки тому +1

Hey Bob! My 773 is actually the 1964 model with a 1950 tender. I mistakenly refer to it as a 1950 engine in this video but updated the video description a few months back. The 1950 version has valve guides and a silver 773 applied to the side. My version lacks the valve guides and has a larger white 773 applied to the side. Thanks for watching!

Thats a 64 773 with an earlier 2426w tender 50 773s are rubber stamped in silver with a different font than the white bigger font 64s and the steam chest is different sorry don't mean to be a stickler just an fyi
