For those having side leakage, grinding coarser and not forcing the press helps. When you press just enough to open the valve, don't press harder and just let it "ride" while holding the pressure
The flow control cap seems to have major issues with side leaks. You can see this in the video at (0:26) which is why the cups taste really muddy, especially when grinding very fine. The silicone seal on the Prismo make it a much better suited product for this style of brewing.
@@AlternativeBrewing hey thanks so much! Been following your channel for a while now. :) We just tested and reviewed the Flow Control Cap and was curious to see if I could spot any leaks in your b-roll. Haha. Looks like mine isn't the only faulty piece.
I have the Fellow Prismo, which is similar, and use it daily for general brewing of regular strength coffees. The HUGE advantage is that you can brew the same original aeropress 'inversion method' without having to invert the brewer since the filter does not leak until you depress it so it is truly handy. And I use the steel filter so I never have to buy any replacement paper and it allows more of the oils thru when compared to filter paper so gives a 'stronger' tasting cup. imo the Flow Control Filter Cap should be included with all aeropresses which would make the aeropress *perfect*
i have used Flow Control Filter Cap for quite sometime and my favorite current method is combination of stainless steel filter together with 2 paper filters.
Hi Josh, like the video. I have both the AeroPress Flow Control and Fellow Prismo caps. I also have the AeroPress metal filter. I have found that using both caps with just their perspective metal filter, I get some fines into the cup. I have experimented with various grind settings and short of grinding coarse (as for a Kalitta pour-over) I cannot eliminate getting fines into the cup unless I also use a paper filter. I use a Vario plus grinder with ceramic burrs set at factory calibration of 2Q.
The video shows the cap leaking on the sides as with many reviews online on reddit states the fit and finish isn’t what you would expect from Aeropress.. i hope they will correct this as the product becomes available in australia
There is some leaking - however - Ill take some responsibility there - the cap a) may not have been tightened all the way - and if this is so, leaking will occur; b) if you have your grind too fine - pressing down will be very hard and you'll begin to see dripping out the sides of the cap - so in this close-ups it's possibly a combination of the two. I'd also suggest the dialling in using the Flow Control Cap, is where you can get the pressure jsut right - where it is not blocking it up, where it is not leaking - though there is resistance and from here - brew time and agitation can be played with to find that balance in the extraction 👌
I also get leaking from it, which is disappointing from AeroPress. I guess it’s the price that we have to pay for the convenience of using filter paper, mainly because the lack of rubber ring, unlike the Prismo. When I’m using prismo, I can go as hard as I can without any leaks.
Thank you for the review. Just so I'm clear, the advantage of the new flow control filter cap is to allow you to brew in the aeropress using the conventional method, so that it doesn't leak as the standard cap does? Why don't you just use the inverted method and save yourself a few dollars? If the intent is to mimic an espresso-like brew, then what is the difference between this and the fellow prismo?
Nothing 😂 it is a carbon copy of the Prismo - other than - I do suspect it performs better at using both Paper - Or metal filter - as opposed to the Prismo where it is suggested to use the included Metal filter when brewing with it. Comparison coming stay tuned 👌
My flow control filter cap is leaking. I try it on both Aeropress Go and Clear and both give the same brewing experience. Water comes out from the edge even i twist the cap super tight. The leak is even serious when i press the plunger down. Disappointed. !
Hi, oddly specific question. Does the flow control cap fits in the aeropress go when its stored? Like when you put everything together with the red cap on top?
Testing it out, I does appear to perform slightly better using wither paper or metal - whereas with the Prismo it's suggested to use the Metal filter with it.
Great video, thank you! Liked and subscribe, I have questions tho: Let say we use your original espresso style recipe (18g, 60ml, off to boil water) - For an Iced lattehow much milk will you add in ml? and how much ice? - For hot drinks with milk (hot latte, cappuccino, cortado or anything else), how much milk will you add in ml?
2/3 being Milk is the most I’d add to coffee. So say you have 50ml coffee - add 100ml milk - this is a good ratio for balance without washing out the coffee flavour. I’ve all depends on size of your cup. But as it melts it will dilute any beverage so keep that in mind.
Hello, I just got an Aero press with the flow cap. my first 2 brews I'm not getting any creema on top. Any recommendations on what I need to change. I have a stainless filter but I have used the paper filters for these first 2 trys. Thanks for the help!
Crema will be very difficult to achieve without a very fine grind - and using freshly roasted coffee - within 7-10 days post roast - and ground fresh right before you brew. Following all this? - then try coarsening it up a little - and brew quick fast shots 👌 good luck
Thanks for the video Josh! I just found you and subscribed. I'm new at this and wonder: do you have videos for Aeropress beginners? I have one for the house, but am looking into getting the Go Plus for traveling. I need to put a kit together (scale/grinder), but unsure what to get (including a bag to travel with all of it). Please point me to some of your previous videos if any? Also, would the Flow Cap work with the Go Plus? Thanks for the help!

Hi, I just noticed your channel and I really like it. I also have an AeroPress with a Flow Control Cap that I use all the time. Could you make a video where you make 20 ounces of coffee to fit into a Yeti thermos. I usually use 40 grams of medium fine grinds, add 100 grams of 195 degree F water, wait 30 seconds, add another 100 grams of water, then wait about 3.5 minutes, them add 350 grams of water to get it up to about 20 ounces. I just wonder how you would do it. Thanks!
Welcome aboard thanks so much for watching! Everything you've mentioned in your brew recipes sounds on-point to what I'd do. At the end of the day, it's going to be a 20 ounce coffee brewed with 40g no matter which way. This would be about the strength of a pour over coffee or thereabouts I'm guessing. Unless you use a slightly darker roast, or stir a little - I'd be looking to increase the extraction of the coffee - without over-extracting it - that way I could get the strongest and best flavoured 20 ounce coffee 👌 Sounds to me you're doing everything right though - and I always say - if it tastes good - DON'T CHANGE A THING 👌
Its funny and ridiculous to see how they make the inverted method with the regular cap so messy and uncomfortable. Just put your glass first and turn it over.
@1:49 ....had me pissing out loud at this reviewers overly dramatic, unnecessary, intentional pressing of the cylinder. You CAN use the invert method if you like. It will not make a mess as this mal-demonstration showed. 😂
😂 hahahahaha yeah literally pissing out! well - if you took a look at the comments from the last video I made on the Fellow Prismo review - I copped backlash for using the inverted method - and ... some people even ended up injuring themselves (sorry!) so - for this video - at least take this as a warning 🫶
@2'15" you said "near" boiling water not "knee" boiling water 😒. LOL I appreciate that you give approximate expected output, thanks. This great recipe I use it a lot for my 14-16 (414-474 ml) Long Black or Americano. I prefer using AeroPress Flow Control Cap or Fellow Prismo cap with a paper filter on top of Prismo or AFCC to eliminate fines from final output.
Biggest problem is how it doesn't have a gasket to prevent it leaking all around the outside edge of the cup. You can even see it leaking in the video. Fellow Prismo is way better imho.
@@isl1ngt0n no it’s straight facts. Aeropress can’t by definition even with added contraptions make espresso. You can be offended or triggered or whatever but it doesn’t change the facts. Agree. I bought the flow control valve with my aeropress never using the regular one at all. Never had a side leak issue.

Hey Josh. It will be nice if you can do a comparison between it and aftermarket products like the fellow prismo or the joepresso

Very interesting, Josh. Congrats, great video!

It's not the same aerobee who's making them. It's been sold off recently, hence we're seeing so many new products under this brand.
Yeah not extremely promising for Aeropress. I have a feeling you will be seeing less for the higher price including quality.

Please do a Aeropress XL video. I’m having issues with it. Believe it brews different from the others and not not at doing 30g brews.
Important question here, will the " AeroPress Flow Control Filter Cap" fit inside the " AeroPress Go " cup? like the original cap?
yes 🙌

What is the scale? Looks awesome
It'd be the Acaia Pearl 👌 they are pretty awesome - alternativebrewing.com.au/products/acaia-pearl-brewing-scale-black
What mark do you use for a latte shot with milk. Do you go to number 1 or 2 on the chamber
I'd add 20g of coffee - or almost to mark1 with coffee - and fill to mark 2 with water - stir vigorously with boiling water and press after 1 minute.
Hey Josh is the Aeropress XL on the way? That has been coming "by popular demand" for years
it certainly is. Hopefully, get that soon! 🔥
I unscrew the filter over the FOGO bin & press the puck and paper filter straight in there, WAY less to clean up

Yes 🙌
