  • In this pottery video, I showcase a kiln opening with handmade pots, crafted from stoneware, have undergone firing at cone 8 (±1240°C). Whether white, black, or red sandstone, mixed or not, these ceramics are a testament to pottery craftsmanship. I'm using home recipe glazes. I share insights into pottery firing techniques, including tips for firing XL pots and firing large pottery. I unload the kiln, revealing the outcome of this intense firing process. From pottery success to the occasional pottery failure, each kiln opening brings its own suspense and drama. I'll show you why your pottery warps, explain how to prevent ceramics from breaking during firing, and delve into why large pots twist or crack during the firing process. With simple tips, you can prevent your pottery from warping.

Hello, Thanks for the tips with warping on large pots. I was already wondering how professional potters deal with this problem. My pottery store advised me to do something similar. For large pots, simply add additional feet of the same height (without decoration) for the middle of the pot. However, do not attach these with slip. Only when they and the pot are dry, attach them with UHU glue. The glue burns during firing, the feet come off without leaving any residue but support the pot. I tested this on my last 2 large pots and it worked great. Greatings DB

You are funny, " I forgot the pots" and then when you didn't recognize the glaze I chuckled. Amazing pots

Thanks. Yes indeed, I rarely publish kiln openings (the last one was more than 6 months ago), but my kiln works almost all the time. As this is something common, it often happens that I don't remember what I'm putting in the kiln! At least I still have a few surprises like that!
Plus, I like to have a choice when I fill the oven, so I always have the equivalent of 2 or 3 kiln already glazed and ready to fire. Which adds even more surprises, I have time to forget what enamel I put on a pot!

Great, what a great job! Very very nice results. I find glazing exciting as well as being a craft. Can you tell us something about that too? How do you glaze and what is used? Your experiences and tips are amazing.

Thanks. I am preparing a video on glazing. It will mainly be a video on MY way of glazing, because there are as many ways of doing it as there are potters.

Great pots and glazes! dobe509 mentioned using feet attached with glue to support the middle of the pot. It seems difficult to calculate the exact height one will need in the bisque stage. What happens if the supports are a little too low when firing? Will the bottom be uneven?

Thanks. If the stand is the wrong size, the bottom may curl, or the pot may be twisted. It is best to avoid using this type of technique. I have already shown this in other videos, but if it is really necessary, I prefer to use a refractory plate under the pot to support it entirely. With the good clay, the good firing curve, and good construction, in 99% of cases this is not necessary.
You can also use a small pile of sand in the center of the pot, the sand moves and can adapt as you fire.
