You wanna play like Stevie? Live with a guitar in your hands every waking moment of the day. Ignore everything else. Jam as often as possible. Hang around other guitar players and watch them. Do what other, better players are doing and emulate them. Live, sleep, eat and breath guitar, 24-7!
This person found the formula. I'm up to playing right to when I crash. My wife doesn't like waking up to me spooning with my guitar. Working on that.....
Isnt life strange. This guy plays like this and fights for views and some numbskull does a stupid little dance like the floss and gets millions of views. Humans have become rabid consumers of everything easy to digest without having to pass thru your brain. Like the baby that watches the carousel over his crib and clapping and laughing each time it makes a noise. That is now the adult world we live in.
Stevie is easily the 3 most important Guitarists to me personally, I got into guitar just to get his tone. It's absolutely unparalleled and unmatched to this day. A legend gone too soon.

I have no idea why people want to slam your playing. It irritates me. Great playing and video. I enjoyed it and will use it to keep on learning. And no, none of us are SRV, or Jimi. But tips on technique help me a lot. Thank you.
Stevie was unquestionably great. What I love the most about him, is he was an original. He was inspired by others yeah, but he didn’t try to bite their style. His power AND finesse was crazy. We’re all lucky to have had such a great musician bless us with his music
He was inspired by Albert King, no doubt. In fact id even say he idolized him. A lot of Albert King licks are only 2-3 notes to begin with, though. There is a lot of AK stuff I haven’t dissected, but it seems to me that SRV had better chops and a more extensive lick vocabulary. That being said, there are only so many notes and licks you can play in any given key. Besides, they loved and respected each other and that’s beautiful. Both are great as far as I’m concerned
@@BelowAverageGuitarist Without doubt my man. He did idolise him. SRV without doubt had better chops and a more extensive lick library. I just mean that so many of SRVs best solos are built around that Albert King, second box, bend/release lick that it would be odd to say that he didn't bite into another artists style, because more often than not, they were copied note for note. Having said that, like you said in your original comment, his power was crazy. He did those Albert King licks - albeit the same note for note - with more power. Also on higher gauge strings! The extra gain he used probably helped too.
At first, I thought " Here is another video with a Tube Screamer setting .... Naah!! ... I won't waist my ..... time .... WTF !?!?! .... no fx ... Wait a minute ... the tone, the whack ... the soul of it is there !!!! ... " then my eyes pop off and now I'm blind. Perfect lesson for the SRV fan that wants that feeling in every song. Best video ever !!!!
Dude every time I watch you I’m always amazed with your excitement and passion for playing the guitar. It’s great how you breakdown these awesome players. Now someone needs to breakdown your guitar playing. I think you are one of these awesome players. Right on the fretboard!
You’re by far the most inspired/inspiring guitarteacher in the whole of youtube period. There! It had to be said. No, really, I hadn’t picked up my guitar in like years. Just didn’t want. But now watching you I’m instantly jamming along!!! Thank you so much.
Ha, that’s great to hear brother, the whole point of me doing these videos is that hopefully someone out there is inspired to pick up the guitar and play! That is my mission :)
i really needed this lesson thank you; I love SRV so much he is the best blues guitarist that ever lived (my opinion) RIP master, only good people who left too soon
Well I’ll be dammed love this guy, used to play the guitar actually got quite good but had to run a business and broke my hand, sold all my guitars just brought a a cheap squire and started playing again 10 years on thanks to watching this man forgot how much I loved it but I’m a very bad guitar player now as never got my hand fixed, but love these lesson
I love the way you talk when you're explaining something. You make me laugh 😂 lol. Always enjoy your tutorials. I've watched you on your other lessons and you sound like a different person, I like the funny one. Rock on 🤘
Thanks Douglas, in the beginning, making videos was all new, one has to grow into it. I guess now I’m more comfortable just being myself in front of the camera. It was kinda awkward in the beginning!
Your videos have become instant clicks for me. Love the way you take these different guitarists styles and then break down the techniques in a step-by-step approach. And all done in about 8 minutes. Great stuff. Thanks for keeping them coming.
One thing i'v noticed Thom when various people describe Stevies tone is that they forget to mention that Stevie often played in the 'in between ' p/ups -i.e neck & middle position. He doesn't on numbers like 'so exciting' - often played on neck p/up. You played that VERY like Stevie ! If i close my eyes i would swear it was Stevie 👍😉🎸😎
Nice explanation of all the techniques involved - well done. These music breakdowns are the best way into the "heart" of the actual piece. More please ...
It's all in the right hand. Stevie's right hand was a constant sledgehammer. Songs like Rude Mood and Pride and Joy and Cold Shot are as much about the right hand as the left. I never really even thought about it because as a teenager I just copied him so much but I was playing around an older guy and he was seeing me play Pride and Joy and he was like "Man how do you keep your right hand doing like that???" and I was like "well I never really thought about it...." but it's all in the right hand. John Mayer also said "you might capture that intensity of Stevie for a few moments a night but Stevie MAINTAINED that intensity and that's the difference!" Very true words.
@@GuitarPilgrim You will do justice to him since you are really a great player, but you are also a great teacher for us non-guitar players. You have an amazing sound and also a humility with the greats that have come to hone their art. BTW I also sub to Wings of Pegasus, since he is also a great human being.
Well I know it’s impossible for anyone to sound look and play like the great Stevie Ray but mate I absolutely love how you play and bring back the sound the style the feel that to me is and will always be my hero. My only complaint is you don’t play the whole song. That would be amazing. Keep up the awesome work you do bringing these videos. Thanks
Some things I learned from observations. 1: Have a good backing band/track. That's vital to getting the groove down. 2: Have a good grasp on Funk Rhythm. He tended to use funky riffs and rhythms in both soloing and riffing. 3: Learn the appropriate phrasing. Take from your own blues influences as well. Don't be afraid to build off his sound Then it's all mechanical like in this video.
Guitar Pilgrim, it is a pleasure with you ☺️ thank you for putting it down so straight. And thank you using YT; so everybody can put it down easily. I am a bit older than you and had to work it out by hearing records and visiting concerts wich is a good way too. You bring your exercises clear, easy and light wich is a pleasure. Thanks! ♥️
Thanks for sharing the video. Just one comment if nobody has said it already... To mute the six string you can use also your index finger, as if you were playing a power chord with the root note on the 5th string. That's an alternative to use the thumb... One thing is to sound like someone, and another thing is to play like someone... As you said, when there's a will there's a way. 😉🙂 Thanks again
I know you've done video on hendrix and touched on his muting style but a video on that specifically would be fabulous, thanks already for all the quality vids!
That's one of my favourite songs, specially the el macambo version. Just couldn't help smiling as soon as you start the solo part... great.. Though in your lesson you seem to forget to mention the characteristic upward stroke he often uses.. While you play it, right there at 6.53 Een soort van snik... in zn gitaarspel 😃
The best way to learn how to play SRV is on an acoustic w/ a cut away. After you learn to hammer out his songs on one when you play them on the electric you understand the attack SRV used. IMHO. Texas is full of guitar players that sound just like him, same tone, same heavy gauge strings, heavy handed attack. My bass player ran one of the largest open mic blues jams in the state for years and was Smokin Joe Kubecks bassist as well. We've seen hundreds of players that have SRV down. Several legit youngsters over the years, kids 10-12 yr.s old. I frankly have heard enough but impersonation is the highest form of flattery and Stevie was a friend and a legend.
Such a great lesson, anyone who would give that a thumbs down doesn't deserve thumbs. What else more do you want in a lesson? Anyway as always keep up the great lessons.
When playing like Stevie I've found that the left hand hurts just as much as the right 😂 but it gets so much easier once you accomplish those sick bends and crazy hurricane solos

Useful Vidiots I've got Stevie Vai hands, so my hands hurt just watching Stevie play. I can hear my left hand saying, "don't even think about it!"

the excitement i got when I saw a new Guitar Pilgrim video on SRV was insane. This guy is awesome!
This is my first time coming across your channel and I have to say - I absolutely love your energy.
You're my favorite Blues Guitar teacher on UA-cam ❤️
In the video when SRV hits they open low E with his heavy strings and Strat tone it’s just indescribably awsome. Plus he has the nastiest guitar face.
Great lesson, would like to see you do one breaking down the solo bit.
Thx Christopher, good suggestion, if the video does really well, I might do that

Great job! Thanks you for your video, it's very helpful. One guitarist that I would love to see you study is Albert Collins.
having a rock solid rhythm section is the whole key to his abilities ..
No having a " rock solid rhythm section follow his groove and mood is the whole key to his abilities". Double trouble ALWAYS followed SRV's groove.
