  • Two complaints about the new 2024 Honda Transalp 750 - no cruise control, and no tubeless wheels. Today I show aftermarket items that fix both these issues. We add the Veridian Cruise Control and Outex tubeless wheel conversion kit. Install these items at your own risk and know they could void warranties or be against local laws.

I did tubeless wheel conversion on my BMW R9T 3 years ago. I did not use a tubeless kit, I made up my own.
I used 3M Marine sealant 4200 to seal the spoke nipples on the inside with my caulking gun, and black Gorilla tape all around after the Marine sealant cured.
No issues at all after all this time.
I looked at the commercial tubeless kits in the market and I thought that the little round adhesive stickers for the spoke nipples were a cruel joke.
I am very happy with my tubeless conversion, and it cost a lot less.

That was my thought, I wonder why the kit doesn’t use a liquid sealant that doesn’t depend solely on tape.

@@houseofroos 3M Marine sealant is awesome. After sealing the nipples carefully with it, I seriously thought it would hold just like that. The tape (also great) added even more safety against leaks. Perfect seal.

Great video as always, Ian. I think Honda pulled out the footgun in a big way with the Transalp. They already outsell the AT by quite a hefty margin here in Switzerland for the simple reason that it's cheaper, and big heavy bikes are going out of fashion with increasing restrictions on speed limits and emissions. A factory Transalp with Tubeless tires, cruise control, heated grip and adjustable suspension would sell like absolute hotcakes, but would in all likelihood also kill off about 80% of AT sales. So we're stuck with expensive big heavy bikes if we want nice things for the time being.

  • @Thirsty_Fox
    @Thirsty_Fox 3 місяці тому +58

Cruise would be so easy for Honda to include that's it's hard to excuse its omission. Tubeless option would also help a lot for people like me who don't really want to be stuck taking wheels and tires off on some dark trail in the middle of nowhere.

I dont mind the idea of tubeless wheels if they are factory. I don't trust the conversion kits. Even still, if I were doing a trip that was mostly off road like a BDR I would still bring tubes with just in case of denting a rim on a rock or something. tubeless cant seal bead on a bent rim but a tube will still hold air and at least let you limp to civilization.

Honda does some odd stuff on the electronic front. I'm still surprised by how many of their (US) bikes don't have ABS post 2020. But they could really step ahead by putting cruise on the NC750, CB500x, Transalp, etc.

Well done Ian you’re becoming an ambassador for motorcycling for sure. The cruise control for me is a winner I’m sure many Transalp owners will be well pleased. Relatively straightforward fit, very reasonable price and looks like factory fit. The left side control module is a lot bigger so you'd have to take your hand off the bar completely. So I think it was the choice of one hand on the bar, or a weird finagling with your right hand on the throttle, but both hands on the bars.

If so, you can build from a little peace of aluminium any switch holder you like, maybe in exchange to the front mirror clamp to put the Switches on the left Within reach of the left hands thumb.

I have no intention of trying that. One thing you might try is this.......once you get to the point of installing the tape and prior to installing the tubeless valve, assemble the tire with a tube. Leave the tube in there for a day or two at max pressure. That may seat that tape better. Worked with my Fatty bicycle conversion. once that is done remove the tube and install the tubeless valve. Worth a try.

Pressure is pressure, no need to add the tube. Just air up the tire to max pressure (up to 60 psi bead seating pressure), leave it overnight, and that is plenty of force to flatten out any air bubbles.

      @user-ck4tq2di6p 3 місяці тому +1

You missed the whole point of the suggestion. If it is already leaking then the air will not do squat. The tube has chance to fix that leak by pressing the tape and eliminating the leak. @@toddsorel-pg4hr

After you discovered that rear tire air leak, I think I heard your frustration north of the 49th parallel. 😂 Some things can be so frustrating. However, if you use this kit again, you’ll know what to watch for, and maybe improve upon the standard install. I did see one system that uses a self-sealing, tar-like paste prior to the sealant tape. I don’t know if it’s a better system.
Entry level cars can get cruise. Hopefully, motorcycle manufacturers will get with the program. Which will come first - backlit controls or standard OEM cruise? Place your bets. 😂

Thanks Ian @BigRockMoto for this series on the Transalp. I am really enjoying it. I did the Outex conversion on my Africa Twin, so I have a couple of comments/tips.
    1. It makes a big difference if you have some resistance on the spinning wheel when you apply the tape, especially on the narrow front rim. I had an assistant hold the wheel while I stretched the tape a little, and that helped it drop down into the well better as well as go on more straight.
    2. Taking your time and working out as many of the air bubbles as you can as you go, perhaps with some rounded implement, is really important.
    3. Remember, the bubbles can be pushed towards the spokes as well as towards the outside edge of the tape to remove them.
    4. I noticed the next time I changed tyres that the pressure had removed almost all the remaining bubbles I had been concerned about, so having a few remaining bubbles is not really much to worry about.
    5. After I had converted my AT rims, I noticed LESS air loss than when I had been running tubes.
    5. I think your comments about the performance and handling improvements hit the nail on the head. When I converted my AT, I really noticed a big difference, but not too many people talk about that, so that was cool!
Hopefully this information will help others who are considering doing this conversion. I will be converting my Transalp as soon as it needs new tyres.

If you remove the schrader valve from the stem the air flow will increase and seat the tire quicker. then you can install the valve int he stem and put the pressure you want for riding. The other part of the system is the greater the heat on the rim tape, (to a point) the better the seal of the rim tape. Great video and I have "Tubliss" on one of my dualsport two stroke bikes and other than getting balance right on the rims it is awesome!

They really should make the controller with a hinge so that you don't have to entirely remove the throttle assembly. The odds you'll get a sidewall tear out are virtually zero for 99% of the people out there, even people who ride trails hard. The odds you'll have a standard puncture *that would puncture your tube also* is 100% if you ride any decent amount at all. Tubes are a cost saving measure and a way to force you into the more expensive bike. That's it.
I'm packing for a trip right now. Because I have tubes... I have to bring extra tubes, bead breakers/spoons, dismounting tools, etc. Complete nonsense compared to a just needing a reamer, sticky spaghetti, a lighter, and a CO2 cartridge. All of which would weigh maybe 1lb.

My Grandfather showed me this trick on a tractor; wrap a rope around the tire along it's tread. Use a stick to tighten the rope like a tourniquet, then pump it up. Back in his day they only had hand pumps; he would also use tar or something to help seal it. I have done this to my tires using a ratchet strap. I find it works better if you have a bead lube like a little oil or even hand sanitizer or liquid soap. It squeezes the side walls to the rim enough to build pressure enough to seat the tire to the rim.

3M makes a narrow version of that tape that can be run over the two edges of the central tape
to prevent air getting under those edges. The air pressure in the tire then presses down on all 3
tapes to aid the tapes' adhesive.

Very nice and helpful video again.
I like the cruise control and that it is relatively easy to install.
A tubeless tire can be moved off the bead of the rim for a very short time when encountering obstacles like rocks and wood which will cause the tire to lose air or even go flat. Then you have to inflate the tire again and hope no dirt or mud is on the rim bead area. This is another reason offroad bikes use a tube. Plus many use greatly reduced air pressure offroad like maybe 13 psi which means a tubed tire could be pushed away from the rim easily for a second or more causing air leakage.

I converted my AT to tubelesss just using the 3M tape, been on about 5 years never had a problem. Off road I still carried a spare tube in case of rim damage, but the advantages of easy repairs and the elimination of potential for catastrophic blowouts are still there.
Having said all that I still prefer changing tube tyres than tubelesss!

Just finished up my installation. The instructions were somewhat helpful as far as removing the plastic panels was concerned, but they dropped the ball on the electrical part of it - namely explaining exactly where the different factory connectors were. The blue one took me forever to find given it was cloaked in a black rubber boot that was electrical taped in place and then clipped in place behind the intake duct panel so all you could see of it was the back side of the gray retention clip).
The other place that lacked any instruction at all was in regard to the loosening the throttle housing to slide it off the bar so you could install the soft-touch switch. Sure would have been nice to know I only had to loosen the one screw inside after removing the rear cover rather than removing all five and then spending the next hour trying to get the innards and wires all tucked back into the front half of the housing. What a pain in the dingus that was! I eventually got it all sorted out after a beer or three and a few choice curse words, but that's part for the course when doing any work on a bike. 😆

When it comes to mounting tubeless tires, and not having a compressor that delivers enough air pressure to seat the bead, you can often times use the ratchet strap trick instead. I’ve personally had a lot of luck using a ratchet strap around the tire. Additionally, I stopped buying tubeless kits for my mountain bikes, and started using double sided Gorilla tape instead, it comes in various widths, and no more problems.

I have done many serious long off-road trails without any issues. I used 3M Marine sealant 4200 and 3M tape. I have been following all your episodes very closely and sill wonder if the new Transalp is a better option than the Africa Twin. Thank you for all your honest opinions, guidance, and excellent tests.

I put a “home” version of the tubeless system using ultra snazzy 3m tape and Sikens sealant. It worked flawlessly on my Africa Twin for 50,000 miles and a bunch of tire changes. It failed after riding 3 long days at 100 plus degrees, I have no idea if it was temperature but was probably lifespan. Everything I read said to not do this on front tire due to rim geometry. I’ve now got an Transalp and will do it again, and again rear only. I installed an Mccruise cruise control on the AT and it was perfect, instal was a beast. I ordered the Verizon 2 days ago as instal looks more straight forward. Of course I missed out on your discount code.

Ever try to find a MC tire repair shop on a Sunday...or Monday? 🤬🤬🤬I ended up JB Welding the spoke to finish my ride, then promptly cleaned out all of the sealer kit and put a tube back in it. 3M marine sealant 5200 is what the Tenere crowd uses as well as myself. Apply it to each spoke nipple, let it dry and apply the tape over it. Make sure to work all the bubbles out and massage the tape around the spoke nipples for proper sealing. Not that bad especially when you do it a couple times getting practiced up. I liked it so well I bought a set of Excel tubeless rims with heavy duty spokes and Hahn machined hubs in my color choice through OFF-THE-ROAD in Germany. Since I didn't have to pay VAT or state sales tax that more than covered the shipping through DHL which was only a few days. Less than a week with every move tracked. So all good. I think the price was about $2000 for the set set up and ready to mount tires. Pricey, yes. But the factory should supply tubeless wheels from day one. The other next level makers do. Why use them? You don't see MOTO GP or F1 patching tubes on roundy rounders. I carry inner boot material with me to fix a cut. Anything can happen not only on the trail but on the highway as well. If you cut a tube tire you'll have to patch it from the inside or the tube will bulge out and burst. So pretty much even repair. What I don't like in converting the tube wheel is there is no safety bead to secure a flat tire to the wheel. In CHP motocop flat tire events that is one of the tests they have to pass. That flat tire has to stay on the wheel for several miles at 50mph. Sitting beside the road with a flat tire has a history of death in a very high risk situation for the CHP rider. I'm a safety inspector and a fed accident investigator. I know better that to be a statistic.

On the tubeless rim tape it might be an idea to install the tape then install the tire with a tube, a light weight tube especially, fill it to maximum tire pressure and leave it installed for a day, or at least overnight, off of the bike in a warm place. The tube would probably really help to press all those bubbles out without direct air pressure trying to work it's way under the tape. Then remove the tube and mount it on the bike. It's an extra step but using a bladder and air pressure is one of the ways they get the bubbles out of composite structures while they cure.

After taping hundreds of bicycle rims for tubeless tires, and even converting non-tubeless rims to tubeless, I've discovered a couple tricks. First, heat the rim with a heat gun until it's pretty warm. Next, if the tape is not the stretchy type, microwave it for 20-30 seconds. Stretch the tape as you install it and there will be almost no air bubbles. Two wraps around the rim is better than one. It is true that tire tools gouge the tape pretty easily. wouldn't hurt to cover the tubeless tape with some other kind of tape. I like the old school strapping tape - tape with the strands running through it - as it's very tough. wouldn't hurt to put in some bicycle Orange Seal if you have premature leakdown problems. Moto rims just take a little more care to tape...

I don't bother using the spoke tabs, I put down two layers of the 3m tape and a few layers of gorilla packaging tape on top so it's stronger if it gets picked by a tire spoon. Then fill the tire to max pressure overnight to push any air bubbles out.

@@disekjoumoer the tape seals the spokes really well especially without the little taps of tape. So double everything on the tapes works the best for me.

Great video, thanks. You didn't mention the safety factor of tubeless. Many years ago I was doing 75mph on a motorway with luggage and a pillion. The rear tyre deflated instantly and very nearly killed us both! Tubes are thin bits of rubber and can just burst like a balloon. I see no reason to have tubes at all...unless it's for folk who ride along river beds or up rocky mountains...like competition stuff, Scottish 6 day trials kind of thing where big impacts can blow air past tubeless rims. Lots of manufacturers bring out adventure bikes or classics with spoked, tubed wheels, with no option for tubeless...I do not understand this, it must just be lower cost for them. It might just be me, but, after my experience ( I will never forget), I will never buy a tubed motorcycle, unless it's a proper old classic that I would just tootle around on. Any road up, love your channel.😊👍 By the way, these retro fit tape 'tubeless' things don't work.😂

When you pressure up the tire, it presses the Outex material to the rim and shrinks those air bubbles around the nipples. So if you have a very slow leak, you could try leaving the wheel out in the sun to warm up and apply 50+ psi for a few days. It may just close those last minor leaks.

Most spoke wheels have flat(ish) spoke nipples that fit in dimples in the base of the rim, that can be sealed with
marine caulk and then marine tape over them. The flat plastic discs in the Outex kit then allow the spoke nipples
to turn during spoke tension adjustment without tearing the caulk or tape. A rim with shoulders to seat the tire bead
is important in such tubeless mods, though, and narrow 21" front wheels, don't always have those shoulders.

There is a video showing how to use Flex Seal for a tubeless conversion. I have used the tape systems in my mountain bikes, but didn't like the idea of tape for my motorcycles. My concern is long term adhesion at freeway speeds; there is a lot of centrifugal force trying to separate the tape from the rim. I used the Flex Seal successfully and have tested it to 95 mph for 15 minutes at a time. Regardless of system used, it is best to use silicon first on the spoke nipples (see other videos).

Conversions, this is pretty much the thr exact same procedure as with bicycle conversions. Its not a big deal and the pros outweigh the cons.
Having said that on a mtb I replace the tape once a year. By time it becomes muscle memory and you start doing it in a couple of minutes. On bicycles its pretty much a requirement to have liquid latex sealant. This will seal the bead on the rim and get in any airhole in the tape and block it off. It will also seal small punctures without needing a plug. I’m surprised on motorcycles this is not part of the procedure.
