Damn,$31,000 for a bike? At that price point, it shouldn’t need anything to be completely ready to tackle anything you could dream of throwing at it. $31k and you still need luggage. And for the Rhodes scholars coming with the comments “don’t watch it if you can’t afford it.” I’m here to support the channel whether it’s something I’d ride or not. If you want to spend $30k on a bike, do it. I’d spend 15k on an Africa twin or something similar, and buy a hot tub for my house with the rest, before I bought this thing.
It's a lot of money for sure and I wouldn't buy it but it's nice to see a channel buy one to test rather than another transalp review. Lol fun to check out expensive stuff and not have to purchase.
@RadDadisRad that's what i would do but let's be honest this is a pretty big upgrade and one day you can buy one of these models lightly used for half. Lol
I bought the R1250 adventure a couple years ago and what I can say, it doesn’t disappoint. You really are impressed when on long journeys. Absolutely amazing motorcycles
Thanks for making such a commitment to review the new BMW adventure flagship…so far I’m unconvinced but definitely following since I know your review will be straight up.

The best reviewer on the internet bar none. Keep up the great content you’re doing an awesome job. Looks are a personal thing, not for me on this one but sure it’s going to be amazing
As a R1300GS Triple back owner in the UK I watched from start to finish with interest. My bike is approaching 4k miles and has suffered what I consider premature rear brake pad wear at 3.5k miles, a stretched rider seat cover due to be replaced under warranty, and also the well publicised starter relay recall. A stunning motorcycle to ride with huge levels of performance, the looks have really grown on me now, so you were spot on there.
At least BMW do recalls, unlike HD which just waits for the Pan America owners to bring their bikes in to the dealership when the bike breaks down on the side of the road or just won't start. And then the parts get replaced.
Must be copying KTM for unreliable shit. They are awesome to ride but i dont want a liability. Ridiculous that technology has made more products WORSE than the old ones.
I can tell you are excited. Even though I could never afford this bike, the more informed about all bikes the better. You never know what the future holds. I appreciate reviews. Thanks.
While it didn’t lose as much weight as many people had hoped, BMW still achieved and incredible technical feat with this bike. It certainly will be the new best selling bike of all time and the new cash cow for Motorrad. Great review!
The GS looks better than last years bike to me but the price is more than I am willing to pay. I own a Suzuki V Strom 800 RE cause I don't go off road. You helped with my decision on the V Strom with your video on the 800 DE. Thanks.
How you are able to make buying new bikes and selling them used into a worth while buisness is beyond me 😮 I salute you Ian and hope you continue to grow🍻 Live long and prosper 👏👏👏
@@mkviz Unfortunately, the IRS keeps raising the deduction threshold every few years. I guess if you deduct the bike, the truck, the trailer, the house, the cameras, the computers and the kids, you might reach the threshold.
As an owner of previous GS models, I'm anxious to hear what you think of the R1300GS. Not sure I would ever spend this much money on a bike, but still very interesting
Same boat. I'd be interested to see a review of a base model R1300GS, if they ever actually make any. They claim a base price of $18,895, which is a LOT less than $31K. And there's certain stuff like Keyless that I actively do NOT want.
I have never been a 1st model year aficionado. I’ll let everyone else break them in and watch them *hopefully* enjoy them. I love the 2nd hand market for this specific reason. I am here to watch you enjoy this bike.
I have four motorcycles that cost less than that combined, three that I bought brand new from the dealer: 2014 V Strom 1000 2023 KLR 650 with ABS 2017 Crf 250 rally 1978 Honda Goldwing In fact, all four combined were $5000 less than one bmw. And what’s crazy is, keeping all of them on the road will cost me less than keeping one BMW on the road.
@@MikeK6046 you must be a bmw owner. Am I right? Enjoy your multiple recalls! BMW specializes in those. Of course, at first, they torture you with repeated denials and stonewalling. But eventually, the bike will be recalled. Trust me.
@@Ntmoffi trying to give a little perspective. Spending $31,000 on a BMW is insane. I might spend $31,000 on a different brand, but not BMW. Their reliability issues are legendary.
The fact that BMW can get that much money for it says something. Not that BMW shoppers are stupid, but that it's worth the price if you can afford it. If you can't, call it overpriced.
I thought $24K out the door for my 2023 Tiger 1200 Rally Pro was steep. Much love to the mighty GS, but at this price point I just don't see it being worthwhile anymore. I'd rather get 2-3 other bikes and spend the balance on upgrades and customizations.
Ian you’re the best. I have watched every review video out there (completely obsessed with the new GS). Am really looking forward to your series. Always honest and informative. Sold my RT 3 years ago when we moved on our boat full time, but will soon be shore bound. Hopefully with a 1300 GS in the garage.
The new moto guzzi stelvio base model costs 16 and a bit. That is half the price of the BMW. And for some reason, i can hardly accept the idea the BMW will drive that much better.
The huge group of GS buyers wouldn't even consider it.... Dealer network for it is a joke and not many touring will want to be doing interstate touring on it. Granted there's some big adv owners not doing touring and maybe it would be one they'd entertain, but very few GS owners would look at it.
@@highwayman1218 Here in Europa there is a decent dealernetwork. But you are right, the average GS rider will not look at it. Only dead fish go with the flow. I prefer a Guzzi. For over 30 years.
Even the centre stand has an electrical component....... I mean it's cool in a techy way but damn waaaaaay to many things to maintain and switches to corrode or fail
What is everyone on about with the reaction to the price? In this free market capitalist society virtually everything we consume has offerings ranging from dirt cheap to outrageously expensive. It's all relative to one's perception of value or enjoyment etc. Some people think a Big Mac is expensive while others don't bat an eyelash at a 200 dollar wagyu steak. Or a high priced Swiss watch compared with a nice down and dirty yet nice quartz watch. Or a cheap 200 smart phone vs a 1,500 Apple phone. BMW will sell loads of the new GS and the price is somewhat irrelevant. Just another offering in the motorcycle market. To BMWs credit they have created a product history with the GS of near legendary status. The price? "It is what it is". I'll take 2,,, hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, but extra mayo. 😊 I just buy what I want. No need to justify or validate or rationalize the price. 😉
I’m so glad you’re doing this series, as my 1300 GS arrives in less than two weeks. I bought it without even riding it, so I’m glad to hear you say that your initial ride was favorable. Looking forward to future updates.
Nice going Ian! Good luck and looking forward to your reviews. I live just a few kilometers from the BMW factory where these bikes are built and must say the 1300 is impressive . Though more sleek and with cleaner lines, it still has that brutal look. I will hang on to my 1250 Triple Black ( looking even more brutal ), having bought it 2021., However, like most men, wanting the newest machine is always tempting until you tell your wife😂. Greetings from Berlin, Jim
I wonder if we've reached the point in motorcycle development where we've passed the point of diminishing returns. Can a strong intermediate rider really notice "HUGE" improvements with a new bike compared to even a 5 year old comparable machine? Clearly, if money isn't a concern, then it doesn't matter, but $31k for a BMW or $14k for the Husky sounds insane. That said, the triple black is really nice and the best option IMHO. Keep up the great work Ian and all of us with a more modest budget can live vicariously through you!
Look at dirt bikes and what pros could do on them 20 years ago. Can you give a new rider a new dirt bike and expect them to ride like a pro from 20 years ago? No
I think you provide the best motorcycle reviews on UA-cam. Looking forward to the upcoming episodes. Many thanks. ($31,000 USD is a LOT of money! It's $42,000 Cdn!!)
Great initiative and timing Ian. There is so much interest and at the same time scepticism in this new GS especially considering the price that I think there will be plenty of people watching each one of your episodes. I own 2020 GS have done over 80,000kms exploring Australia mostly off-road and love it. Thinking of upgrading but not sure if it is worth it, really need some real life honest review. Looking forward to all your episodes.
You do excellent work Ian. Thank you so much. To give you my opinion, I would say smaller lighter bikes are the way to go. I have no idea why BMW built yet another monster.
You are a brave man. Yes the question really is that my Norden Expedition was half the price and I doubt this is twice as good, especially offroad I will prolly run circles around it.
Thanks Ian for buying the bike for review purposes, and great at a personal level that you also wanted one. This is a great video, and really looking forward to seeing the series and what I know and trust will be your honest opinion. And on some positive feedback for you. Ive been watching your channel, videos and as subscriber for a few years and great to see you develop your skill set in communications, video production and editing, and also seeing more of your personality and intro to your family is absolutely excellent, keep up the great work, and thanks again David.
Congratulation on the bike and obviously the growth of the channel to make all of this possible! I'm really looking forward to all the great content that is about to come for this awesome machine
I sometimes entertain myself with the idea of selling my '14 GS and maybe some body part to get the new one. Then I snap back to reality and remember that this one is serving me just fine... Looking forward to the series Ian, as always unbiased opinion will be great to hear. Love the channel and what it provides, one of the best around! Cheers!
I was just browsing youtube and found out this channel. Im not a GS or any adventure bike fan - riding only sports bikes... but still, this channel is very entertaining and because its about the rides, you sir have a new follower 😆
Full marks for you buying the bike and steering clear of manufacturer incentives to influence your message. Thats a lot of money. Looking forward to future content. Thank you
For shorter riders: Probably not your first priority but, since you ordered the 1300 with the adaptive ride height I feel compelled to mention something that I have discovered after studying the owner's manual in detail on the subject. (For context, I currently own a low ride height model 2019 GSA and have an R1300GS with adaptive ride height on order). Where the R1250GS/A allows for the rider to set the ride height to its lowest setting (and have it stay there at all times while riding) regardless of the riding mode chosen, the R1300GS manual (USA version) states that one can set the adaptive ride height to be at the minimum at all times BUT, that this can only be configured when in the ENDURO and ENDURO PRO modes. This begs the question, why the restriction to these two riding modes and what are the factors to consider if, being the shorter inseam rider that I am, I want to set the minimum height at all times for street use? In reading the R1300GS owners manual it seems to state that the ENDURO and ENDURO pro modes can be customized by the rider to change the rider aid settings (ABS, linked brake force distribution, and ASC) to those that one would likely want to use on-road. (That is, having done this in order to get the adaptive ride height to stay at the minimum height at all the times.) There is some ambiguity however in the verbage of the owner manual pages as to whether the result of custom configuring the settings of either of the ENDURO modes to mimic say, ROAD or DYNAMIC mode, actually guarantees that none of the rider aids might not still be (internally at least) set for the bike to behave as if for off-road use. For shorter, fairly lightweight people like myself, who like to experiment with lower ride heights (for reasons of both inseam challenge when stopping and, for the sporting character that a bike that sits a bit lower in its stance sometimes offers) I'd like to know what happens on paved roads when you configure the bike to remain at the minimum height at all times albeit, though it appears one will have to customize one of the ENDURO ride modes in order to do it. As a light rider who does not compress the average suspension much, I often find that I can get away with a lot less preload/ride height on even moderately taller bikes without having ground clearance issues or bottoming out the suspension, even in spirited canyon riding. I intend to use my R1300 for a lot of sport riding (much as I do my current 1250). I cannot help but wonder why BMW felt compelled to require the use of the ENDURO ride modes in order to be able to set the ride height to remain at its minimum at all times (that is, not just when coming to a stop). Perhaps inseam challenged GS riders like me are a minority so my question may be of interest to very few. That said, BMW clearly thought that making the bike more accessible to shorter riders was not insignificant, so why take away a ride height configuration option that shorter/lighter riders clearly used?
Congrats on the new bike. This makes me wonder what my 2022 R1250 GS is worth now. When new prices jump that much, they usually drag the used market up as well.
Looking forward to the series. Would appreciate a final episode comparing the 1300 value proposition to other big Advs that are used and a couple years old. E.g. 1250, Tiger, SA, AT, V-Strom, Multi V4. Intent would be to show what one gives up for thousands in savings.
Hello from the arctic circle in Northern Norway! So incredibly cool that you are buying a BMW R1300GS!!!! I can't wait until you start testing the bike on your channel!!!! I'm sure you'll get a lot of viewers on your channel now, and it's well deserved!!!! I like this honest test of various bikes, and I have followed you for quite some time. The choice of black was perfect in my eyes, but you must get the side panel GS black too! Then it will be perfect! And you are most welcome to come and experience Norway by bike! Europe is just a short flight away! July-Aug are the best months to come here! Got lots of good tips for you!
Exceptional start for another great series! Your reviews are second to none! Like BMW, thanks for being the leader in this area! Quality comes at a cost! Looking forward to this series and your objective review.
She looks so much like you!!! Adorable. And congrats 🍾 on the new bike! Way too big for me, but I love learning about new junk! Great in-depth analysis and thoughtful reflections as usual! These videos are helpful even if you don’t want to buy the specific bike. I learn something every time. Thank you so much homie!!!
As a street superbike rider my whole life, I sold my CBR XX Blackbird in 2017 as the roads/hwys in N. CA became way too dangerous. I bought a new KLR 650 and moved to Montana in 2019. I love my KLR. I’ve always been intrigued by BMW but absolutely never considered even looking at one. My close buddy up the dirt road from me has 4 BMW’s including 2 GS’s. Another buddy just bought a 2024 GS 1250. I started fiddling around looking at them online about 6 weeks ago, watched multiple YT vids from European reviewers and have fallen in love with the bike. You’re the first American review I’ve come across thanx to the algorithm!! Loved the vid and am absolutely looking forward to your future reviews with my new sub to ya 😊 especially the aftermarket stuff!! PS f@ck Hellifornia LOL I’ll buy mine in Missoula. Zero sales tax. $220 at DMV gets personalized (your word) and specialized (plate background with like 100 to choose from) and permanent (never EVER have to pay registration yearly) plates.
Damn, I felt bad when I spent $30,000 two weeks ago when I got a 2023 Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally. Your invoice on the BMW 1300 makes me feel better about my purchase. I ride with a lot of BMW riders that pushed me towards the gsa 1250s but Ducati had some really good financing. I know you really had a good review on the Rally and I have an Aprilia/Ducati dealer only 10 miles away. Added the Ducati to my garage with my 2023 Aprilia Tuareg. Ducati for long multiday rides on highways, Tuareg for serious adv offroad rides!!! Love your content, your content does help me. I still check other reviewers, but you seem to be pretty straightforward with your reviews.
Hey man. First of all, I want to thank you for helping me to choose my new bike. I've got the R1200 GSA and I could not be happier. Your reviews and videos were crucial in my decision-making. Now, about the R1300, I'm sure there will be no other place to have all the information on real-world ownership and use other them here, with you. You are the best reviewer on the web, bar none. That being said, I would not buy the R1300 unless BMW gets its act together with the Adventure model next year. The tech is undeniable, but we buy motorcycles also with the heart, right? We'll see. Cheers, brother.
You were a huge GS guy back in the day when I first came across your channel. It’s cool to see you back on one. I hope you keep it long term and take us along on all of the adventures you have with it. You on a GS just make sense. $31k is a lot of dinero though like others have said. BMW, Ducati, and Harley need to chill out a bit and realize there is a limit to how far most motorcyclists will go in the price department lol. We are officially at the ridiculous level at this point.
Congrats Ian on your $31k venture👍🏼 I’m looking forward to following your episodes. I’ve owned a 2009 GS, 2010 GS Triple Black and 2016 GSA. Had a 2022 HD Pan America and wasn’t impressed at all. Currently I’m on a 2017 BMW S1000XR but soon I’ll be adding the 2024 Transalp based on your review on it and others I’ve seen. Keep up the good and entertaining work! Also good job in moving to your new Casa, more land and you got Thomas Mtn as your playground behind you🙌🏼
Been waiting for your honest review. Looking forward your 10 things I love/hate bout gs in 3 months. You are probably only one who will give honest unbiased opinion, because it’s your own bike. Thinking should I upgrade my 1250
Glad you got this bike as I do enjoy your long term videos, and I do like this bike, triple black is a good colour. I know some people comment on the cost but BMW bikes are expensive and have always been at that top end, happy riding 😊
1st off , congrats Ian! What a beautiful machine, better looking than I thought. But man oh man, that price is eye watering! FYI I checked the price of a KTM 1290 S, CANADIAN PRICE is $22.8 K. Your R1300GS would be close to $40k here. Thank you for your sacrifice to provide us content! Looking forward to the upcoming reviews!
Good job! Everyone's been waiting for a comprehensive review of the 1300 and I'm betting your readership will go up significantly weather or not folks are looking to buy one! For myself I'll stick with my 2015 1200GS and buy more tires!
My 2014 fully loaded GS which I bought for £5250 is seeming like crazy value for money now. These new bikes are great but the price is just insane. It does make great content for the channel though and I enjoy your videos.
Top shelf presentation as always - looking forward to this series. Not really planning on buying one but you never know. As for price, I don’t find your total cost out of line - premium, well optioned bikes will cost. I paid a little less than that OTD for a new GSA but that included luggage and nav. I am not disappointed with it.
Really looking forward to your in-depth review Ian. You are the best reviewer on the net bar none. You picked up your bike on the same day as me . Same colour and nearly identical specs. Will be interesting to see how our experiences compare. Health to enjoy it 😄👍
Congratulations! Ride safely, enjoy, and make more great content. I was glad to see the price you paid did not include junk fees. My local dealers include about $1,000 in pure junk. Soon we can add motorcycles to the burgeoning list of things the middle class can no longer afford. Things like concert tickets, skiing, going out to eat, vacations, and college. That's a lot of dough for a motorcycle and for those who don't want to ride a $31k bike off-road, it will be interesting to see how you rate the GS's touring chops.
Horrible idea. Get a small or medium sized used dual sport and learn on that. You WILL drop your first bike, especially if you take it on dirt. Sell it after a year for close to what you bought it for, then get something bigger/nicer.
Great review, Ian! I really appreciate your reviews! I own a 1250 trophy and I bought it after watching a few times your review about it and the comparison with the africa twin
Lovely introduction with the wee one, perhaps thats all we need 🤣🤣🤣 Love the jeep and trailer. The wrap sounds realy interesting. Price....ouch. I had a 2017 gs, cycliders corroded and water pump went, sold it at 2 years. Can't go back. I found solid wheels were better on road than the spoked. Foot pegs are just tiny, even for road. Wow, nice free first service. It will be very interesting to hear/see you reviews as you push the motorcycle, as your skill set is way above mine.
Ian, I’ve been waiting for this. Thank you. Look forward to the series. Lot of comments out there on the headlight. Early on I listened to designer Christian Hahn-Wornle discuss it on Long Way Home’s channel. I’m happy to see it’s now symmetrical at least. I think it’s important for safety reasons to look different enough to be noticed by other vehicles on the road. Right now one of my concerns with the new bike is the availability/compatibility of soft luggage. I’ve got a lot of money in the bags for my current 1250. I wish they would have taken that into account for customers that want to transition to the new bike. It is significant enough to make me pause buying it. I think overall the new bike’s looks and features are great. I’ve yet been able to ride one so can’t comment there. It appears there’s a lot of things we’ve been asking for. I think folks have to appreciate that this bike was ten years in the design process and the designers tried to make it meet as many rider demands as they could. I think they did a great job and look forward to hearing more from you on your experience.
Another great review. Looking forward to seeing what BMW improved and what might trickle down to the smaller motor bikes. Your daughter is so cute and very good on camera!
This is it folks! BMW's flagship has been completely redesigned. Is it the best overall motorcycle in the world? I think it could be! Stay tuned for future episodes coming soon. Please subscribe.

A stunning motorcycle to ride with huge levels of performance, the looks have really grown on me now, so you were spot on there.
That is an insane amount of money for a motorcycle with multiple recalls already.

I appreciate that!
Thanks.
If the motorbike makes you smile and happy every time then it's worth every penny. Congrats on the GS! Subscribed.
Exactly! "I would never give that money.." - than dont. If it's making you happy and you can afford it go for it.
@@RaAlbyThose kinds of posts are so trite and cringy. No one cares that you’d buy 20 Kove motorcycles instead of this GS.
How you are able to make buying new bikes and selling them used into a worth while buisness is beyond me 😮

Always buy them lightly used. GSs go for a hundred thousand miles no problem.
This guy is living the dream. Good for him.
It’s more an nightmare 🧐
ok?
The older model looks better to me.
Cheers Ian!
I have never been a 1st model year aficionado. I’ll let everyone else break them in and watch them *hopefully* enjoy them. I love the 2nd hand market for this specific reason. I am here to watch you enjoy this bike.
Last model year of last design is my sweet spot.
Excited for this one, Ian. I agree that you should do first ride impressions for episode 2. Buyers guide can wait. Thanks for all your efforts.
You may not be the first to do a review of the 1300 GS, but your review is the only one I care to watch!
I have four motorcycles that cost less than that combined, three that I bought brand new from the dealer:
2014 V Strom 1000
2023 KLR 650 with ABS
2017 Crf 250 rally
1978 Honda Goldwing
In fact, all four combined were $5000 less than one bmw. And what’s crazy is, keeping all of them on the road will cost me less than keeping one BMW on the road.
Good for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Um OK.
@@MikeK6046 you must be a bmw owner. Am I right? Enjoy your multiple recalls! BMW specializes in those. Of course, at first, they torture you with repeated denials and stonewalling. But eventually, the bike will be recalled. Trust me.

The fact that BMW can get that much money for it says something. Not that BMW shoppers are stupid, but that it's worth the price if you can afford it. If you can't, call it overpriced.
Yes, I generally agree.
I thought $24K out the door for my 2023 Tiger 1200 Rally Pro was steep. Much love to the mighty GS, but at this price point I just don't see it being worthwhile anymore. I'd rather get 2-3 other bikes and spend the balance on upgrades and customizations.
And travel expenses
@@highwayman1218
Here in Europa there is a decent dealernetwork.
But you are right, the average GS rider will not look at it.
Only dead fish go with the flow.
I prefer a Guzzi.
For over 30 years.
I am considering buying one and have waited for this video! I actually have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow so you’re just in time! ❤
Even the centre stand has an electrical component....... I mean it's cool in a techy way but damn waaaaaay to many things to maintain and switches to corrode or fail
That's a justification to add $2000 to the price
Thanks for bringing this to us, big fan of your channel.
The free market in action
I’m so glad you’re doing this series, as my 1300 GS arrives in less than two weeks. I bought it without even riding it, so I’m glad to hear you say that your initial ride was favorable. Looking forward to future updates.
BMW are having a competition for the ugliest headlight with Harley Davidson.
Hahaha - 100 per cent 😂
Not worth it
It's beautiful, but too expensive.
It’s beautiful, Ian. I have a 2023 in the Garage and will give it a few iterations before getting a new model. Can’t wait for the series.
If you resell them in 3 years you will notice the difference...
Look at dirt bikes and what pros could do on them 20 years ago. Can you give a new rider a new dirt bike and expect them to ride like a pro from 20 years ago? No
Looking forward to the review on this bike. Congratulations 👏

And my 300 2-stroke was 1/2 price of your Norden and I run circles around you off road... It doesn't make sense to compare bikes like this.

For shorter riders:
Probably not your first priority but, since you ordered the 1300 with the adaptive ride height I feel compelled to mention something that I have discovered after studying the owner's manual in detail on the subject.
Too much money, could've bought three different ones
Congrats on the new bike. This makes me wonder what my 2022 R1250 GS is worth now. When new prices jump that much, they usually drag the used market up as well.
Looking forward to the series. Would appreciate a final episode comparing the 1300 value proposition to other big Advs that are used and a couple years old. E.g. 1250, Tiger, SA, AT, V-Strom, Multi V4. Intent would be to show what one gives up for thousands in savings.

Cant wait for more videos, im planning on getting a new 800/900GS as a first motorcycle, and I can't wait to start riding!
Horrible idea. Get a small or medium sized used dual sport and learn on that. You WILL drop your first bike, especially if you take it on dirt. Sell it after a year for close to what you bought it for, then get something bigger/nicer.

Wow! super cool to see you show up to riverside bmw! Love those guys!
