    Update:
    I didn't know before, but now I know its called a Autostrada.
    Yes, I know the windscreen is dirty... it was bug season.
    Yes, we will be back, the food is fantastic and the people are friendly.
    Star Bucks....paying with card had the best exchange 1 CHF = 5.7 PLN ( normally on that day was 4.08 )
    I kept to the speed limit, as I heard some other countries send the fine back to Switzerland and then I pay extra.
    Thanks for all the positve comments and info.

    In Poland these roads are not called Autobahn like in Germany. These are called Autostrada. That name comes from Italian (auto = car, strada = road), as Italians were the first to build such a motorway, an Italian A8, which connected Milan to Lake Como. It was the first dual highway in the world and it opened in 1924... Then Germans started building these roads, and then Americans copied Germans (though in a different way). Polish A-class roads are of the same class as Autobahns, and it is possible to drive at extremely high speeds on some sections fairly safe (depending on traffic). Having said that, the national speed limit in Poland is 140 km/h.

    In Poland, do not drive on highways. They are paid (expensive) and lots of trucks on them. It is better to drive on expressways - they have the same standard as motorways, and they are free for passenger cars (marked as S, eg S3). The only difference is the maximum speed: motorway 140 km / h, expressway 120 km / h. Both types have various amenities: clean toilets, petrol stations, they are sheltered from the surroundings, so you cannot meet, for example, wild animals.

    Question for Poles in the ojczyzna... I'm 50/50 Polish & Austrian and in 🇦🇹, Germans have a bad reputation for disregarding the generous speed limit of 130 km/h. As a result, Germans are referred to as "Piefke" which refers to the Prussian bandleader and some vulgar insults are often uttered by Austrian motorists. Is this also a problem in Poland? Dziękuję!

    • @Krystone...
      @Krystone... 3 роки тому +5

      Generally, I would say Germans are not bad drivers. Driving in Germany is a privilege, not a necessity. I would say that there is a very good driving etiquette among German drives. Generally they maintain the distance and don't overtake from the right. It might be because they are used to higher speeds, and perhaps some may not even know that there is a speed limit. On the other hand, Polish drivers break the laws intentionally. For Polish drivers speed limits are more guidelines than rules. I have personally driven through Austria many times and it doesn't seem like a place where you can go really fast for a long time. The motorways are curvy and there are a lot of tunnels, especially in the higher Alps. Even if there are sections where you can go really fast, it makes no sense to do that, because your average speed to the destination will still not be as high as in Germany or Poland. You will also get a lot of tickets from the speeding cameras. Not to mention that your carbon footprint will very likely be significantly higher. Poland, however, is mostly flat with very long sections of somewhat straight motorways and nearly all high speed roads in Poland were built recently and adhere to the highest standards in the world. Therefore these roads are safe and adapted for high-speed driving. But to answer your question... Polish people are notorious for breaking the speed limit laws. In fact, Polish people notoriously break the laws that are inconvenient to them. It is very likely that this has to do with the fact that Poland was partitioned and ruled in the past by other nations including Austria. Question: if, for the sake of an example, Russia annexed Austria today, would you abide by the laws imposed by the invader?

      Nah. Poles are also speeding. Drivers from Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine have worst reputation in Poland. Especially TIR drivers from that countries.
      They are considered as unpredictable drivers on the road.

      a lot of cars with german license plates are driven by Poles I think about 60-70% so it is not like in AT where you see cars with German license plates and suspect that it is driven by German. But travelled as a passenger with German driver in Poland and avarege speed was about 180km/h

    Trucks are limited to 80 km/h, not 90 km/h. They just drive at least 10 km/h over the limit. In Poland, you can get a fine if you exceed the speed limit by at least 10 km/h, because the measurement error is taken into account. And almost every one takes advantage of it.
