bucketfan4life that would be an interesting experiment to watch. We know that normal running is faster but what about long distance such as a one to three mile race? Would a person be less out of breath naruto running versus a normal run?
There is also actual historical basis for the naruto run. Not in terms of optimal speed but in other areas. The original ninja run is meant to be a quieter and drain less stamina. While being easier for people with swords or bows on their hips or in hand. Though the anime stylisation exaggerates certain aspects to be easier to draw i expect and for cool factor
@@Desdemona-XI i wouldn't think it would be easier. Both of them stated it drained them more than normal running. And if you are weighed down with armor and weapons, it would increase the off balance of your center of gravity, making it harder to keep up right.
Ok. I'm going to state for the record that even in Naruto, it's faster to run while moving your arms than not. There is an episode where they are guarding a guy doing a race. He easily and consistently outruns them even when they are trying their hardest to catch him. He moves faster than they can while he is moving his arms. The real reason they run like that is to keep their hands free for weapons or grabbing onto things while they are running through trees. And because, and I cannot stress this enough, the biggest reason: with the amount of running they do, it's easier to animate.
There is a real world reason ninja ran this way it's not just from Naruto lol they ran this way because they believed it to one be faster but also made it easier to dogde or roll from a flat out Sprint.
If that guy you said is faster than them while running normally, this doesn't mean that ninja running is slower. Maybe that guy was just faster no matter the technique. They use this running method to increase their personal speed, not to be faster than others.
@@taurus99exe that guy started out as a ninja and still chose to run the normal way when he was going full speed. He may have been faster overall but he still didn't use the ninja run to win races.
You're all wrong, the reason ninja ran this way is because they believed that running like this would make their steps more harder to hear as they were approaching the enemy
Easy answer: Anime are animated images. If you animate the regular running loop there are a lot more frames in regards of arms, hands etc. If you animate the 'ninja' loop there a less frames = less money and time spent. Why do you think DBZ characters flew so 'staticly'?
I never interpreted "anime running" as a purposeful technique; I always thought it was just a representation of the fact that they're moving so fast that their arms can't fight the wind resistance and go back like a flag in the wind. It's similar to how fast or acrobatic characters are often animated with scarves or headbands so that you can track the direction of their movement more easily.
@@TerryTerius sure it does, they like the feeling of their arms flapping. anime running IS for enjoyment only. Its like clapping your hands when you're happy only your hands are behind you.
@@MCSPARTAN501 Anime/ninja running was created as an animation cheat back in the early days of the Japanese animation industry. It saved time and money by not actually animating the arms and legs moving while still implying speed. The technique became so synonymous with the genre that it has stuck around to this day.
THANK YOU!! I'm disturbed by how few people actually make this point. I think their superior speed and skill makes using arm unnecessary, and they are just letting them fall limp, and wind is what holds them back. And they are not wasting energy swinging their arms. There may also be a benefit to having their hands always "near" their kunai pouch.

Chakra in the Naruto sense is a mixture of spiritual and physical energy. While the show wasn't explicitly clear on what this means, I understand it to mean combining ki with the energy used to move the body. And ninja were taught to regulate their chakra output, not just for jutsu but also for things like walking on water. As I just put in a different comment, here's a *real* expert's opinion on anime running, which itself starts at about 10 minutes 15 seconds. m.ua-cam.com/video/W82754Zhx3Q/v-deo.html
There was a person on UA-cam a long time ago whose body had adapted to this form of running. Sadly he’s no longer active, went off to make it in the music industry...
Not really. Even trained from birth this technique would still suck because we're not built to run like that. You can tell because no one even considers it until they've seen a particular wank anime.
I thought the same thing. She swings her body and arms so much more than the anime characters. Maybe why she felt so weird while running. Upper body should be somewhat stiff, with arms back. What do I know?
I noticed that too. I'm chalking it up to power. She's probably throwing so much more oomf behind each step that it becomes virtually impossible for her torso to remain stiff.
Shes a gold medalist, probably spent thousands of hours running to perfect her form. So anything from muscle memory to subconscious habits were making the naruto form awkward XD.
Ninja running is all about falling forward and being less exhausting, but speed isn’t the reason, the reason is their wooden sandals prevented their feet from pushing off the ground the same way we can with our sneakers
@@arandomdude5722 If he seeks a common/mainstream girl, them yes, running like this probably won't achieve it. However, if he seeks an anime fan, it might just work.
Hope this makes it into footnotes. I’ve been watching for a month or so and went through almost all your videos and finally made a video in time to comment. There’s a video called “the last ninja explains naruto running” it’s very interesting (all subtitles) you should watch it sometime. In the video the man talks about how ninja were mostly used for delivering information and while it was important to know how to fight it wasn’t their main focus to get into fights. He goes on to explain that the method of running they use while leaning forwards (in the video you can see that the lean is not as extreme as it is on naruto) is used because when you lean forward you naturally want to fall so it helps save energy and when you aren’t doing it at a ridiculous angle you are getting the good momentum without sacrificing your balance. Also he explained that when a real ninja runs they keep their arms down by their hips and sides to keep their swords from swinging wildly. They also lift their knees up high so they don’t trip on obstacles when trying to flee at night. Side note for all of the fans that love naruto: in the same video he also explained that they really do hand signs and that they don’t believe it “crafts their chakra” but it is used as a way to help calm their selves. ua-cam.com/video/Sk8POUhLwM8/v-deo.html
^^^^^^^^ This person's got it! And the video I was going to mention, too! xD It isn't about being more 'aerodynamic', per se (it does helps in not having arms flailing about though),it's about being in a constant state of falling forward, and using your feet to keep you up. Thus, both forces (kinda like the Shuttle orbiting Earth) act together to give what appears to be a 'faster' forward motion. But it's just more a more efficient form, fit for their tasks. And it's the very approach used in this channel's video (and almost every other test ever done) that many people get wrong in trying to emulate it, either for fun or for testing. Most just simply bend their upper bodies forward, then run as they normally would, keeping their arms behind them. But that is *entirely* the wrong way to do it. You need to start off by leaning forward, and let yourself start to fall forward. *Then*, use your legs and feet to keep yourself as far from doing a face-plant as you can.
Another thing to add into this is the theme of stealth. As listed above they are mindful of energy conservation, not tripping, and keeping the sound to a minimum. Another thing to add to all of that is your body is lower to the ground with less visible movement. In the shadows you better blend into the background. Ninjas were never meant for fighting though it did happen, it was all spy work. Side note; The Shogun of Japan would use Samuri to pretend to be Ninja for assassinations. This way it was blamed on the Ninja instead. This caused the view of Ninja to be seen as assassins more than the spies they really were.
Tim p. It’s awesome that you mentioned the orbit of the earth because while I was driving to work this morning I started to think about the Brachistochrone where the downforce of gravity and forwards thrust is equal in a way that it’s faster than thrusting in a straight line and faster than straight thrust or accelerating fast and then thrusting forwards. If you like this channel you can see a great example of the Brachistochrone on vsauce the one with Michael. I was wondering if the angle of your run can act like a Brachistochrone and help to make you faster
Actually, they kinda do the "naruto run" in the last miliseconds of their sprint, check them out as they push their head forward and their arms backwards as they reach the goal...

Way back in elementary school I used to be one of the slowest guys in class. One time I tried running 60m with anime style and my time did improve, but the teacher didn't approve and I had to revert to the usual technique. Perhaps there is some truth in "Naruto run" being a better option for slow people. It might be part psychological: "I must run faster or I will fall on my face".
Slowest runners tend to run very vertically, which is ineffective to fast running. Instead, they should run with a forward body posture. The "anime run" puts the body into this forward body posture, which will help an untrained runner go a bit faster.
As far as Naruto running is concerned I always thought it was more of a side effect from running at a fast speed & or to help with tree hopping when at speed.
@@Flattithefish Do you have a sauce to go with your claim? Because, it seems silly, why would people trained in stealth & espionage run in a way that enlarges there silhouette and consumes unnecessary amounts of energy and arm strength by purposely holding them up?
@@lorde0147 actually if they are running towards you, in a dark area, and they are wearing black clothes, their profile would be smaller than if they ran at you straight up, also their target would have less chance at defense if they ran beside them and slashed with a sword or dagger due to their position. An upright opponent offers you a better chance and more body area to defend against them.
That doesnt count.. Because: 1. You didn't do years of ninja training. 2. You'll need to run on forest, mountain, or rooftop (I think they "invent" that running just because it's easier to animate for the anime, the uppper body almost didn't move, so the animator just need to redraw the foot.)
I know you're kidding, but I can't resist. Forgive me. It's still slower for the reasons Ms. Tarmoh outlined. You lose the counterbalance of your arms swinging and you can't lift your knees as high for optimal speed.
Yuh huh... gotta do it more 'bad guy style' with one arm before your face during your dash with the other behind your back for quick weapon deployment. I should know.
@@destynova4512 yet I have a friend who looks good doing anime-style running. She is an anime geek but, somehow, she does it without looking awkward or weird.
I know this is a year old but there is a few variables that I think are not taken into account (in general). First, they are both professionals in terms of fitness and are taught the proper way to run, breaking from that means their brains are naturally going to fight it and get back into proper form. Secondly, there was a legitimate style of 'ninja running' but even that had a proper form (point 1). The point of the form was not to run extremely fast, but rather run efficiently, focusing on covering vast amounts of distance as quickly as possible, as quietly as possible, with minimal drain to one's stamina. Essentially, to compare Olympic runners to ninjas would be basically like comparing military hand to hand combat vs boxing. 2 different styles for 2 vastly different professions and purposes.
The whole "anime run" comes from two things, noh/kabuki theater where stage space was limited and the actor wanted to create an impression of speed, also, sometimes the costumes were quite elaborate and elevating the arms up and back when they "ran" prevented them stepping on the overly long sleeves of their outfits, and two, an animation trick, when they are shown running like that they only need to draw the head, shoulders and some of the legs although sometimes not even the legs, just "speed lines" to depict moving faster than the eye can see, this saved a bit of extra time drawing a torso and arms moving up and down etc and is now a staple of most action anime.
Been watching Vinland Saga. Not gonna lie when i saw the protag do an anime run. It just took me out of it.... This is a fairly realistic anime about vikings and well.... It wss just way too unrealistic
@@badfoody you're just mad that samurai knew how to run without having to kick their legs away from the ground just using gravity was enough for them. That's genuinely genius
You are wrong with respect to the origins of this technique. It is a technique used by Samurais and Ninjas to quickly close the distance between them and their opponent. More effective for that and to conserve energy. The technique involves Gravity manipulation as you will be constantly falling forward or backwards, and you use that Gravity momentum.
@@memeier9894 I mean... he calls himself non-athletic for the "nerd" memes, but I bet he could just about beat all of our asses. Also: Jeneba Tarmoh has a 100m sprint record of 10.93 seconds according to wikipedia, that's a 5.46 second 50m sprint(estimated) at her peak speed. That's actually *faster* than the current world record of 5.56 seconds.... but that's kind of skewing things quite a bit in her favour. The TLDR of things is that she was out of her element here in more ways that one.
Interesting to see an expert runner try this, the slow mo showed another factor: leaning forward and trying to bring one's leg up, the leg compresses the torso which will reduce lung capacity. I was surprised that the gal was still on her toes for Naruto, that takes strength. She was also swinging her arms side to side which helps with balance. Oh, and wind resistance plays no role in anything below 45mph. An olympic sprinter can't do 25mph.
The fact that the average increase in time is 3% almost proves my own theory about Naruto Running They do not run that way for speed but to keep there hands and arms free to use weapons (Kunai, etc.) and jutsu while in a full run
Asian boss interviewed a supposed real ninja and did cover this topic. The naruto run is based on historical ninja running. It spares stamina normally burnt in pumping your arms. Is safer if you have sword in hand or on your waist (as sword scabbards are not physics defiant fixtures of a belt and are in fact usually much more loosely attached) or quivers for arrows.
@@renyen9752 I think the point is that "Naruto" running is *based* on historical ninja running but not exact. You keep your upper body relaxed and arms away from your body to interact with your surroundings and keep weapons in hand at a safe distance and the less upper body movement could help muffle any armour you are wearing if you were going into a combat situation. And the lower profile helps make you a smaller target, really it's more like running at a crouch more than a standing run. It's a technique for stealth, not speed. More than likely it was rarely used since more missions for ninja was intelligence gathering or infiltration which would require blending in, not standing out, and when combat was involved, samurai would be used, not ninja.
@@Desdemona-XI I saw that interview, I got the impression he was doing some light trolling. If you try running without moving your arms you use much more energy by using your core and back muscles to stabilize, whereas using your arms is relatively effortless because they move with momentum. However at slow speed, a ninja using stealth to hide, keeping arms still, not necessarily behind you, would reduce the noise of the fabric.
Then why not have the weapon in front of you while running like I see in other animes or ninja movies than having your hands in the back of you? If your weapon(s) are in the back of you while your running to your target your at a dangerous and bad advantage because if your weapon is in your hand/hands you would have to retrieve it for your back causing risk of damaging yourself and having less impact than having a weapon ready in front of you and having the ability to not only do precise, devastating blows to your target but also having a means to protect yourself aswell
I'd be willing to bet there are much older anime than sonic with this in it, you know the ones with the terrible dubs and the cursing sounds like a meme rather than serious anger
@@freshairkaboom8171 asian boss interviewed last real ninja and they asked him about ninja run. He said it's more energy efficient and legit ninjas run like this before
Depends. A lot of people inflect and add emphasis to certain syllables when there really shouldn't be any at all. (traditionally they don't inflect, unless they're specifically trying to draw attention to something or someone, or emphasis a point. Like a parent/teacher scolding a child/student)
This was a very short sprint. In a longer run, you would run out of breath REAL bad. Lack of arm motion would limit your lung operation AND keeping the arms horizontal would cost you EXTREME amounts of extra oxygen...

There's nothing to do with animation since the running is depicted in the manga as well. They are just animating what is in the manga
You're all wrong, the reason ninja ran this way is because they believed that running like this would make their steps more harder to hear as they were approaching the enemy
The secret running techniques from the village of hidden science
I don't think that explanation works for characters who have ridiculously high strength levels as well. But, I agree on the artistic point.
@@TerryTerius sure it does, they like the feeling of their arms flapping. anime running IS for enjoyment only. Its like clapping your hands when you're happy only your hands are behind you.
It's based on how ninjas used to run in real life. It supposedly saves energy over long distances due to not moving your arms.

They didn’t focus their chakra so of course there wasn’t a gain in speed.
Rosey Do you mean their Qi?
@@mschrisfrank2420 To be fair, chakra are the "organs" that facilitate the flow of qì throughout the body.
@@mschrisfrank2420 no, the ninjutsu (magic) in naruto is powered by an inner energy known as "Chakra". 🤷♂️
And is used more for balance, not a speed boost (like Jedi using The Force for a quick burst of speed)..

@@TheByQQ I'm waiting for the reply saying "challenge accepted"
There was a person on UA-cam a long time ago whose body had adapted to this form of running. Sadly he’s no longer active, went off to make it in the music industry...
Not really. Even trained from birth this technique would still suck because we're not built to run like that. You can tell because no one even considers it until they've seen a particular wank anime.
You can see that when she anime runs, her natural intuition is to move her shoulders while Kyle's shoulders are virtually still.
I agree with nolan on this one, she needs to counter balance because every step is so powerful.
I think she actually did better though. Kyle's arms are stiff as fuck. Her arms where loose like the ninjas actually do in Naruto.
Shes a gold medalist, probably spent thousands of hours running to perfect her form. So anything from muscle memory to subconscious habits were making the naruto form awkward XD.

Agree. Ninja run is not used to become faster, but to become more efficient, and when I say efficient is for ninja not sprinter or athletes
^^^^^^^^
This person's got it! And the video I was going to mention, too! xD
It isn't about being more 'aerodynamic', per se (it does helps in not having arms flailing about though),it's about being in a constant state of falling forward, and using your feet to keep you up.
It works, if you just do it right.

So, the anime run is really the Fatboy Trundle?
Way back in elementary school I used to be one of the slowest guys in class. One time I tried running 60m with anime style and my time did improve, but the teacher didn't approve and I had to revert to the usual technique.
Perhaps there is some truth in "Naruto run" being a better option for slow people. It might be part psychological: "I must run faster or I will fall on my face".
Slowest runners tend to run very vertically, which is ineffective to fast running. Instead, they should run with a forward body posture. The "anime run" puts the body into this forward body posture, which will help an untrained runner go a bit faster.
When you ran, I thought she was gonna bust a vein in her face from laughing so hard!
That would be interesting to try and explain to her trainer...

First, they are both professionals in terms of fitness and are taught the proper way to run, breaking from that means their brains are naturally going to fight it and get back into proper form.
Secondly, there was a legitimate style of 'ninja running' but even that had a proper form (point 1).

The fact that the average increase in time is 3% almost proves my own theory about Naruto Running
They do not run that way for speed but to keep there hands and arms free to use weapons (Kunai, etc.) and jutsu while in a full run
@@Desdemona-XI lol a real ninja

Jeneba just look like the sweetest person to be around.
Well, chocolate is sweet
@@ThalonRamacorn thats racist in someway but actually true
@@candyman7084 fuck off SJW, chocolate was a compliment
There’s a psychological bump that comes with running like your favorite superhero.
I run like the T-1000.
T-1000 was running to kill. Which is the coolest kind of running.
I run like a Borg drone.
Yes, I know they don't run at all, and that's my point; my top running speed is non-existent.
Run? A true badass stands point and says "come at me, bro". Lol
@@dickmarx1298 So... Like Dio?
Jeneba is so great! Amazing charisma! Bring her back for everything, please!
*shikamaru after watching this video
: "what a drag!"
If we're being technical, Sonic the Hedgehog ran like this first, so it should be called "Sonic running"
Real ninjas used to run like this. It's not just "Naruto" thing. Look it up
@@alphhs5260 But why?
I'd be willing to bet there are much older anime than sonic with this in it, you know the ones with the terrible dubs and the cursing sounds like a meme rather than serious anger
@@freshairkaboom8171 asian boss interviewed last real ninja and they asked him about ninja run. He said it's more energy efficient and legit ninjas run like this before
When you swing your arms while running, supposedly it consumes extra energy.
Give this guy a medal for saying “Naruto” correctly....
When
Now he just needs to learn to pronounce "pokemon" correctly.
is that not how most people say it? Naruto = nah-roo-toe
Depends. A lot of people inflect and add emphasis to certain syllables when there really shouldn't be any at all. (traditionally they don't inflect, unless they're specifically trying to draw attention to something or someone, or emphasis a point. Like a parent/teacher scolding a child/student)
@@timp.211 the english dub pronunces it right as any japanese speaker will tell you
I like how she was willing to take part in this. also that she was surprised anime style was ONLY 3 percent slower for her
and still faster than his best! lmao
She clearly had a good time. Just watch her laughing when Kyle Naruto-sprints across the finish line.
This was a very short sprint. In a longer run, you would run out of breath REAL bad. Lack of arm motion would limit your lung operation AND keeping the arms horizontal would cost you EXTREME amounts of extra oxygen...
