I just got this thing in Lake Placid Blue and man its an incredible bass, especially for the price. I used to hate Squire when I was a kid, my uncle got one back in the early 2000s and it was one that came in a combo deal with the amp, and it was horrible. Every Squire I have played recently I absolutely love, so much I now own 3 of them!
My go to bass is a Squier jazz classic vibe in Olympic white from around 2010. I’ve put in American standard p/u’s, and an American pick guard and Schaller tuners. I does everything you could want out of a jazz bass and plays wonderfully! I have an American standard P bass, and a Gretsch Jet short scale, a Fender Kingman and a Fender short scale acoustic bass. I play the Squier all the time! Now, I’m primarily a guitar player, so I play bass at a jam, if there’s no other bass players, or for recording my own stuff. I think Squier is a far better bass company than a guitar company! Peace

I bought the Affinity to mod it and compare it to the Classic vibes, and was recently thinking of selling them or trading them to get one of these in the Jazz variant, but every time I pick one of these up and play it. I can't imagine not having it. I'll probably stick to my original plan with the Affinity and mod it, then just buy the Jazz Bass variant of these straight up. I think I have an addiction at this point.
@@detox2778 the last Squier I bought was the P - J mashup from the “Paranormal” series. I loved the looks, and the idea of a very P looking bass, playing, feeling, sounding like my classic vibe J. I got it, set it up with my preferred flat wounds, and then…..found that I could not “bond” with it. So weird. So I’m just going to shop for an affordable P bass and sell/trade my Paranormal series bass for it. The classic vibe J I’ve got will stay with me forever! Cheers! Keep on pick’n.

I bought three of the Anniversary models, This P bass and two Jazz. Put new pots and pickups in them, and they are as good as anything you can buy for $1000. I am a bassist of 48 years, and haven't owned a Squire since 1983. These are really well made and deserving of the accolades they get. Good Job Squier!
I bought a Squier Classic Vibe 50s P as the basis for a project I had planned, but the instrument was so nice out of the box that I've left it in its original state. I think the output jack should be replaced with switchcraft or similar quality, but other than that the instrument itself is flawless. Seems like Squier is where Fender is willing to have some fun, and I applaud them for getting these in production and on the market.
Squire knocked it out of the park with this series. I've always liked the 70's style jazz basses they make but always worried about build quality. This line is just... it feels right. Thabks for the wonderful content.

@@Giambijuice I just finished setting it up Friday night, I’ve only gotten to play with it a couple times. I’m not a guitar tech and I used strings I’ve never tried, so it’s a tiny bit buzzy on the frets right now, but I think that’s more on me. As far as looks, it’s beautiful, the tuning machines are very nice, it’s not too heavy, very comfortable neck. I’m a big fan for the price!
I got this exact Squire P bass, black and gold, a few months ago. Tried to adjust the bridge and ,like you said, several screws were stripped out. Got a new Fender himass bridge and installed with the UA-cam help of John Carruthers, and it sounds great!
Got on of these a few days ago, first impressions are really good. The set up straight out of the box wasn't too bad at all. It's put together really well . Weight is a big consideration for me , and this one is great ,after all, what's the point in spending a fortune on an instrument if you're in agony after a 2 hour set. One of them is the one you are reviewing here and the other one I am considering is Sterling Ray24. I can't choose which one to buy. Which one would you recommend? why? and how would you describe these 2 basses? I will add that for me the tone/sound is not a super important and the price of both basses is very similar. Peace Yo.
I would go with the Ray 24. I think that the build is superior to anything in that price range. Either will work but that would be my choice. Good luck!

Nice bass. I just recently picked up the same one but in Lake placid blue gold hardware. It's such an awesome bass. I've gigged with it a few times & gotten good compliments on punch/tone and looks. Thinking about getting the jazz bass in future.

Hey New Gun Guy, My favorite bass is the one I haven't bought yet! I do like my American pro 2 precision and my Stingray. The amp I'm using now and really like is the Mesa D800 and Mesa Subway 112 cabinets
I got the `50s and `60s Classic vibe basses and they are really nice. Both needed neck adjustment which was easy and I put flat strings on. Good to go.

I just bought a new Les Paul Trad Pro V. Was talking to my brother and he said he always wanted to try the bass. So I go down to the music store and look at basses to get him one for Christmas. Man, this bass is a diva. It demands attention as soon as you see it. Action was nice, very responsive. Didn’t think twice about taking it home.
pretty crazy to me that now new squiers are going for more than you can get used mexis for. people seem to love the CVs though, so if this is anything like that i guess it's fair. youre right, an american version of the all gold hardware would be sweet
Got mine at Sweetwater for 599.00 and a week later it was on sale for 390.00 and they were kind enough to honor and refund me the difference. Great bass guitar even at the full price!
Thanks for the review! Looks are really spot on in this one! I was about to get this as a backup bass, but now I'm more tempted to get an _upgrade_ and buy one of the Fender Player Plus Precisions.. Those basses are super versatile with active electronics 😄 Might buy this one second hand later on, though, cause it seems to be a relatively good instrument all around.
I've seen a lot of Squier basses over the years that have had some bad necks and really shoddy fret work, can't say I ever encountered that saddle screw issue. Hopefully they've improved their quality control, especially for these higher priced models. At the $600 price point they've got some stiff competition, I honestly hope they can be succeed for those that are looking for a more tradition Fender bass in this price range. I'd be interested in seeing a video comparing these 40th Anniversary Squier basses to the Sire Fender-ish models.
The exact one I bought. Yes the action is a tad high out of the box but I will give it a setup when my TI flats arrive. Really nice tone with the tone knob turned down (which is what I prefer). Yes they are pricey for a Squier but the market has spoken and they are disappearing fairly quick in my neck of the woods.
The Lake Placid Blue has a perfect amount of flake in it… and there’s no reason to change the pickup… I did and it wasn’t worth it. I put the pickup at one step above Mexican made, the “cheap” USA pickups. I have the 40th Gold Edition Olympic White Jazz, too, and those pickups are great, too. Especially when boosted with a LeBass by Two Notes tube 2 channel preamp.
My p bass arrived this morning. The blue one. I was a bit worried, buying a squier without testing in Shop for 500 e /600 dollars I wasn t sure. I have no job because of my health...I needed an alternative. As a jazz bass guy for two decades, I already added a Sire at my fender Ones...but for p bass,Im sorry, but Sire doesn't make it...so I would try squier.have been already upset years ago,I have to admit they really improved,finish,quality,sound...and the set up is minimal...no need to go see a guitar tech or a luthier. With my little knowledge it took me 5 min to change strings,adjust action,trus Rod was good.Im very happy and would rate it 8/10 quality/price, Maybe 9. Sire would be 9 for jb ...nothing to say just that the landscape is evolving and now the olds prejudices are no more accurate...mexican fenders are pretty good...it Will neveu ne thé custom Shop,but in the 80's even a big price instrument could be the wrong one....not saying this is perfect or not expensive enough,just saying Im glad and would gig and record with it no problem

Like a good cop in USA! What if you drop the bass on the floor and you break a tuner??? What if the tuner is broken by itself one year later? What if you want to upgrade but still have the Squier-Fender look with the tuners or the bridge?? Nothing goldie on Fender site on the parts department... Big but... So i went to a Vintage one! A zillion chrome tuners looking like Squier or Fender everywhere!!!! So your doomed mister... Bad thinking...

Nice looking, but the price is into used Fender P Bass territory where you could then add some gold hardware a little at a time ( if that's your thing). But even back in the mid 70's, I didn't like gold - too old foagie for me! 😵💫

Hey Tom, I've had quality control issues in the past also. I was kind of hoping maybe they had rectified them. The bass looked , played and sounded great, but I agree if there were quality control issues it would be a no go for me as well.

Got a MIM P-bass I really like, bought the 40th J-bass with gold. They have put something extra on these Squiers, great tone and looks glad i bought.
I bought the Jazz bass and it's a great bass, I would say best Squier I have ever played. Every bit as good as any MIM Fender.

Hey Oona, the only thing I didn't like about the player plus was the weight. The ones I tried were nine and a half pounds.
I have player with active electronics for over a year, considering replace it with Squire 40th after playing it in the store.

Bridge saddles never strip out unless you use wrong Allen wrench. Squier uses metric!

@@BobBlackBass It depends on who’s doing it if you get a Marty Bell finish you won’t have that problem if you get a factory finish from Indonesia you may have the sticky hands problem
Nice looking, but the price is into used Fender P Bass territory where you could then add some gold hardware a little at a time ( if that's your thing). But even back in the mid 70's, I didn't like gold - too old foagie for me! 😵💫

if fender was smart hahahahahaha....love your reviews. btw if fender were smart they'd stop putting vintage tall frets on "classic" basses. vintage are #6230 not #6150 frets

600 bucks for a Squire?? I don't think so. Last two I've owned had major QC issues. There are much better choices in this price range.
Hey Tom, I've had quality control issues in the past also. I was kind of hoping maybe they had rectified them. The bass looked , played and sounded great, but I agree if there were quality control issues it would be a no go for me as well.
