What worked for me is fasting in the am until mid afternoon 3 times a week, stair climber ( do not get off until you are dripping wet) and staying on your meal plan. As we all know realize your strength may suffer. Drugs which I have never taken just makes it easier and faster but lead to medical issues. I had one cheat day with my gf on saturdays.
The hardest part for me, John is the weekends. All week I can eat awesome and train etc and focus on work. When the weekend comes, I like to enjoy one night out with my wife for a nice dinner, or even combine that with a higher calorie breakfast with pancakes. I've moved into the the stage where I'm allowing myself to have more rest days. #overtraining... Replacrd/fixed with cardio days and I'm really into stretching now. Over the last 5 years, I've listened to so many people. You are the most complete I've ever listened to. Thank you so much sir.
This couldn't come in a better time, I'm a skinny natty. currently 3 weeks out from a show. And this is what I what I needed to hear today. Let's just say my wife is not fun of BBing 😥. Thanks John for the tips 👍
"because I think you can" - yep that sums it up. Natty because I'm a masochist 💁🏽. I track everything in LifeSum and fluctuate my calories around my maintenance range to keep the body guessing. Then a big protein refeed tied after a huge compound day. This guy knows!!
John, you are legit, man! You speak about others being on gear as well as the naturals, and say how much help those on gear get due to what they consume, which naturals don't have this advantage, making our training that little bit harder... I appreciate this a lot! Other videos I have watched, from others, all say they same - Gear doesn't do much... BS! That kind of info, for the young generation, does not help whatsoever... but your videos, your experience, your explanations... they are worth more than gold! Cheers, John... thank you for taking the time to helps us all!
Hello John. I’m a new subscriber to your channel. It’s a hidden gem! And I want to say thank you for not being a bullshitter like some UA-camrs I’ve come across lately. I appreciate your honesty and the knowledge you’re offering in your channel. Keep up the good work and God bless you!
I will say that as far as fasted training goes, I have made insane strength gains since I began training at 5am fasted. I personally feel like the hormone increase from working out right upon waking overcomes being fasted. I do use a preworkout product and on heavy days I begin drinking cluster dextrin and eaas once I finish my compound exercises. I've worked up to a 400lb bench and 600lb squat training this way. Almost immediately upon the workout finishing I have a protein shake and within an hour after that I have a larger breakfast. With this method I have had great success in the gym and my recovery has felt great! I have tried fasted training later in the day and I felt like dog shit which led me to believe in the added wake up hormones really helping the process!
I feel like you've really touched upon a point that you brought up in Omar & Eric's podcast that you featured on. The whole point of just being able to throw drugs at an enhanced athlete, however a natural athlete requires a lot more thought and attention in their approach to fat burning & diet, alongside that, everyone's body is different and it becomes a much harder challenge in that situation. Thanks for the vid John, always great.
Thanks, John, for your solid, sound advice! As a diabetic, I have no choice but to limit my carb intake, so I take most of my carbs pre- and post-workout, and the rest sparingly throughout the day.
Studies have shown that fasted exercise increases lipolysis (more ATGL, less insulin) while protecting muscle with increased GH/IGF-1. Also, up-regulated autophagy (SIRT/AMPK) from fasted training conserves and recycles protein, so you don't need as much. Therefore, you should NOT eat before or during exercise. I've found I can build muscle eating 50 g of protein, 1300 total calories, per day with intermittent fasting and a ketogenic diet.
OMG.. I realized something about 24 hours fast. During study years, short-story i did alot of 24 fasting, once or twice per week (minimum once) and was weight lifting consistently. Once i give fasting a try, in 5 months, i have full on 6pack while never pay that much attention to diet, still a normal healthy diet but never thought i was dieting to lower body fat. I just ate the same & just fast once or twice per week. All of that without losing muscle. I was heavier back then with define abs than im currently. Now,if i tried to cut down again I've always loss quite substantial amount of muscle. Definitely going to fast again. Thanks for reminding me John. 👍 you're the best
I loved this video. So many important information. Can't thank you enough for it! Before I even watched the video, this came to my mind after reading the title: "Of course you can get ripped naturally. The real question is: can you STAY ripped naturally all year around?" - The reason asking the "all year around" question is that because in our modern society you always have the visual stimulus of seeing ripped "influencers" all year around, people tend to develop the feeling that everybody has to look like that all year around (even if most of those influencers don't even look like that always). So, to answer this second question, I think you even can stay ripped all year around, but for that you really need exceptional genetics, disciplined and consistent work in the gym, and even also luck. To explain the luck part: you need to be lucky to have major life disasters avoid you.
Hey there John, thanks so much for all the info which is like referring to the elephant in room. Being ripped naturally i feel is easier if your happy being a certain weight and easier in a calorie deficit, however when calories are increased to add more muscle mass by increasing overload, hitting the gym harder there is always an element of increased fat to and the cut starts all over again with more HIT. At 44 weighing 185, I’d be happy with 15% buts its a long road because metabolic rate is lower let alone the natural decrease of test. But I’m still gonna pursue my goal and enjoy a healthy diet. Keep up the great content! 👍
John, you've found your true calling. You are at the top of your game in terms of presenting factual information pertaining to bodybuilding and nutrition. You speak from your own personal experiences, rather than something you've read in a book. Your information comes out effortlessly. Which is a testament to your real word experience. Keep up the great work.
Hey John, do you ever plan on touching on the subject of Mike Mentzer's HIT style training or minimalist-style training? I think that would be a great video topic that would interest a lot of folks
I wish someone would address this style of training. Always thought it was Mike's way of giving you the optimal way to train as a natural (Semi). Only way to Recover from Intense training sessions ( misunderstood by most as lazy training ) Of Course it's not optimal ( enhanced ) because of the ability to Recover. IDK
I found John just recently a couple weeks ago and am already just in awe of his knowledge and wisdom. Was shocked to find he passed...we lost a TRUE LEGEND of a man...salt of the earth kinda guy - a good man. Damn 💔
I have found fasting helped me, I never did 24 hours but have done up to 16hr, would try this 2x in a 9 day period, just with work and everything it worked out great, but it really helped me cut down for BJJ, and break a plateau, if you will when trying to cut. I slowly worked my macros/cals back up. It could all be in my head, but I feel like I rewired my metabolism doing this, for the better.
4% natty - painful. It’s all diet, cardio & water intact IMO. Total mind 🤬. Brutal & satisfying at the same time. Skin so thin & any incline movement felt like my abs were ripping out of my skin. Stuck moment for me was change in food sources & after one week huge change - got well tighter. Went down to 1/2 cup of oatmeal per day for carbs 3 weeks out however 0 carbs two weeks out which was unnecessary IMO as was in perfect shape. I couldn’t walk 1/4 mile to the store last week out - people thought I was unwell 😆
Hi John, thank you so much for this. I really needed to here it today. Deep in prep at the moment for the BNBF British Championships in September and been struggling today. Listening to this has given me the boost i needed. Thanks again.

7:29 exact thing happened to me my first full cut that I followed through with. Cardio actually made me start to gain weight because I would be tired and lay around the rest of the day. Even just the deficit I was in I was tired all the time and my NEAT went way down. Started consciously staying active (with the help of caffeine) and it made a huge difference in my fat loss. Great video.
leroy kaufman I wasn't making excuses... Just had realization that I was spending my free time doing nothing when I was on low calories, which ultimately made me spend less calories... So I made sure to keep me awake during the day and actively doing stuff after work and not just going to sleep.
First video I am seeing of you. 30 years in the sport are telling me you speak from experience. Anyone younger reading this, advice like his is what you want to follow.
Great video. Also want to say thank you for mentioning not to go all the way down for shoulder press and Incline barbell bench press. My rotator feels much better now
I love your content and the way you put it out there. You speak straight and to the point in a very effective manner. Great job on this one and all of your videos! I enjoy your content! Keep up the great work! It is much appreciated!!
Great advice yet again John...I'm always blown away by the amount of "naturals" training in a fasted state...Good shout on chilling out post workout, I also try to sit quiet for 20 mins or so pre workout as well....
Even just TRT gives you a huge advantage when dieting. That's because hard dieting is proven to make even healthy young men have low testosterone. In my experience, the irritability and depression goes away when dieting on TRT. A friend of mine who was a professional model said that TRT was common in the industry, mostly just to counter the mental side effects of constant dieting. And of course TRT also has a fantastic muscle-sparing effect while dieting. It is interesting to note that "natural" is not synonymous with healthy.
I actually had massive problems with going through a long definition period. A year ago started meditating for 20 minutes a day, a really "tough" stretch twice a day, and started making a constant effort to be the more nice gentle and happy i could, and actually made everything easier and more effective. All that cortisol levels talk you hear from different experts and bodybuilders it's just the strict reality, wether you wanna accept it or not, it will MASSIVELY make damage to your muscle gains/fat loss if don't adressed properly. Trust me.

Thanks John for the tips 👍
john was a beacon of truth and integrity in the sea of bullshit in the fitness industry, rip to a great man
"because I think you can" - yep that sums it up.
Cheers, John... thank you for taking the time to helps us all!
my pleasure!
Your lecture arouses the interest in Physiology and Nutrition.
Hello John. I’m a new subscriber to your channel. It’s a hidden gem!
And I want to say thank you for not being a bullshitter like some UA-camrs I’ve come across lately.
I appreciate your honesty and the knowledge you’re offering in your channel.
Keep up the good work and God bless you!
thank you!
Man...you are so knowledgeable. I so wish that you were my coach.
The voice of experience right there. Invaluable lessons. Thanks coach!
The human body is so cool. I love this stuff, great video!
Interesting will give this a go
John is so relaxed and just tells truth. Great informative videos and propably nice person
I started watching you because we share the same name, I stayed because I appreciate the knowledge you share. Noob lifter here. Thank you, John!
haha, very cool!!!
The man right here keeps it honest and to the point with the information to back it
JM always droppin the knowledge
John was so well versed and knowledgeable I'm surprised he went the enhanced way.
Thanks for the vid John, always great.
welcome!
Mountaindog is the TRUTH !!!
I did it once. I'm workin' on doing it again with your help. Thanks Mr. Meadows.
Truly the greatest. Such a class act, and his honesty is beyond refreshing. It kills me he’s gone. Such a true inspiration.
Thanks, John, for your solid, sound advice! As a diabetic, I have no choice but to limit my carb intake, so I take most of my carbs pre- and post-workout, and the rest sparingly throughout the day.
We appreciate all your support too John 👏👍🏻👌... you are awesome 😎
Been watching your videos for a little while now. You clearly know your stuff! Definitely a cut above the average bodybuilding UA-camr.
John, I listen to these words of wisdom every time I begin a diet...and sometimes when I just need a mental reset. Thanks a ton 💪🤙
The Skywalker of body building.I thank you, for your wisdom 💪🏻
The chilled voice of common sense fitness. Thanks John, I love your content/methodology x
Yes, please, do a video on the enhanced version on how to get ripped.
Just don't eat

Long video but 1 hell of a guide with all the tools you can think of
Anavar bro lmao they use drugs to slim down
John, you've found your true calling. You are at the top of your game in terms of presenting factual information pertaining to bodybuilding and nutrition. You speak from your own personal experiences, rather than something you've read in a book. Your information comes out effortlessly. Which is a testament to your real word experience. Keep up the great work.
Simply the best video ever regarding the fitness industry. Summing up the main themes in a 18 mins video. Congrats!
Dr. Tony Huge has left the chat

Words of wisdom. At around the 15:20 mark, thanks.
Hey John, do you ever plan on touching on the subject of Mike Mentzer's HIT style training or minimalist-style training? I think that would be a great video topic that would interest a lot of folks
yes
HIT is the onlyyyy way to train!!! Especialllyyyy if you are natural!!!!
IDK
@Thor Odinson Hey Dumbass..., I took a 20 year old from 198 to 247 in 4 months.
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines I took a 20 year old from 198 to 247 in 4 moths.
I found John just recently a couple weeks ago and am already just in awe of his knowledge and wisdom. Was shocked to find he passed...we lost a TRUE LEGEND of a man...salt of the earth kinda guy - a good man. Damn 💔
Thank you Mr. Meadows, it's good to hear some sensible talk. It's getting rarer nowadays
I couldn’t walk 1/4 mile to the store last week out - people thought I was unwell 😆
truth...
mountaindog1 something that feels worse than being lean is the big mistake of bad diet rebound- learnt my lesson the really hard way 😆
Plus your gonna probably weight 140 pounds. At 6 ft that's will look sick.
The Adventures Of Breeze 170lbs - lost count how many people asked if I was ill 😷
@@Rab_Daddy 😆yeah I can imagine.
I miss him so much. What a man.
Rest in peace John Meadows.
Hi John, thank you so much for this. I really needed to here it today. Deep in prep at the moment for the BNBF British Championships in September and been struggling today. Listening to this has given me the boost i needed. Thanks again.
Best of luck!
Wow.... John Meadows... Sir, I truly felt like a father is explaining something tp his kid. Sir, much respect for you and its a pleasure to watch your videos and learn from someone who's so professional and at the same time down to earth... !!
Love, Respect and Peace Sir.. !! ❤
Thank you
Great video. Also want to say thank you for mentioning not to go all the way down for shoulder press and Incline barbell bench press. My rotator feels much better now
Yes. You can, but I realized that I guess it's also different naturally. No one is the same. Loved the feedback on this topic.
Thank you🧡
One of your best videos John. Tons of great advice.
John you are the man to listen to , thank you 👏
I love your content and the way you put it out there. You speak straight and to the point in a very effective manner. Great job on this one and all of your videos! I enjoy your content! Keep up the great work! It is much appreciated!!
Thank you Mark Hamil
May the force be with you
Like how you mentioned fasting for fat loss and improving BMR.
Wow! This 18 minute video answered many questions and problems I've been having for years. Thank you!!!
Love your content, the fact you sharing your lifes experiences. Big fan over here !!
Great advice as always John. Natural is a long road but we can get there
Great advice yet again John...I'm always blown away by the amount of "naturals" training in a fasted state...Good shout on chilling out post workout, I also try to sit quiet for 20 mins or so pre workout as well....
Best channel. Thanks for dropping knowledge . As a natty I couldn't agree more . Thanks brother stay healthy .
💯💯💯 all truth there
Thank you so much ...man you are one of the most expert dietitian and bodybuilder I've ever seen 🔥🔥❤👍
Loving the content for naturals, and naturals vs enhanced! Please do a video on how to make maximal gains on minimal gear!
Trust me.
