This is exactly how I do it.
When you are bulking, your aim should be to overshoot your maximum muscle building calorie requirement by as little as possible. And when you are cutting, your aim should be to lose as little muscle in the process as possible, which you achieve by going into only a small deficit, while increasing your protein intake even further.

No one needs to dirty bulk at the speed of light, I think that's where this is going along with Gregg's older video on the same subject. Steady weight gain, good food with a small surplus and a lifting programme that incorporates progressive overload is all it takes to build muscle.

I had a football coach many years ago that gave me a simple formula. Maintenance calories x your body fat percent goal will be your surplus. Then after your bulk the same number becomes you deficit. For example.
3000x12%=360 for my bulk then same for my cut. It’s simple and always worked well for me. However I’d use caution if your body fat is over 20%. This formula only works if you’re lean trying to gain muscle. Cool video

I just want to say 'thanks' for this video, John. Previously, I had this exact misconception about positive and linear correlation between caloric intake and muscle gains. And only recently I came to the same conclusion that in order to build actual muscle mass and not simply put on some weight you have to stay at ~9-12% bodyfat. In my case, I used regular weighting on a fancy BIA scales. Due to inconsistency of measures and slow progress, it is very difficult to be sure that you're going in the right direction. And this video, although short and simple, is very helpful for those of us who is lacking experience and wants to grow the fastest way possible.

Hey John :) I’m a tiny woman (4’11” or 148 cm and my weight fluctuates right now between 108-110 lbs or 49-50 kg) . I don’t know about my BF % , but I think it should be in the normal range for a woman. I’ve been training for 2 years at the beginning I did not eat enough. So I was very lean/skinny. Then a year ago I increased my calories aggressively :) (to 2700 cals max and I went up to 53 kg or 117 lbs) and now I’m at about 2000-2500 cals a days, which is maintenance- slight surplus. I think for women that want to put on muscle it’s important to know the value of “bulking”, I mean a good, conservative bulk. As women we want to always cut... and a lot of us simply need to spend a good amount of time eating enough.... we don’t need to go extreme to gain muscle I believe, otherwise we lose our shape.

I tried eating in a surplus while at 25% BMI and it isn’t as effective as a leaning out first, because visceral body fat stores estrogen. This in turn lowers the amount of Testosterone in your body limiting muscle growth. It’s much easier to gain muscle when you are at 10-15 percent body fat.

I was told on the body building forum to lose another 10lbs and then start a lean bulk. I've gone down to 140lbs before and have been called weak and skinny by friends. Made the mistake of gaining weight too quickly and got to 158lbs from 140 in 3 months and looked fat. If people who want to bulk would do a 10-15lb bulk, they would do so much better overall. 👍🏽
The old Tony Atlas bodybuilding books always talked about gaining 10lbs for a few months. Then losing the weight and seeing how you looked. Did you add muscle where you wanted.
It is so much easier on the body to lose 10lbs then it is to lose 25-30lbs, which takes months. Plus you get to see how you look after the quick cut so much faster. 💪🏾.

People should also ask themselves, do they want to gain fat cells, which will never go away even if you get lean. The more fat cells the easier it is to get fat again.

Went from eating 1800,2000,2250, then went to 2500 and thought that was my maintenance calories but now I’m at 2900 and i haven’t seen no fat gain, not sure what’s my maintenance😂but staying at 2900, I feel good with that many calories, back then I didn’t know nothing, and thought the calc calories was telling me the calories necessary but then decided to go up my calories and with the one I felt like it was my maintenance and I’m really glad with what I landed now, I really knew I needed more food and more nutrients, but that was a lil story by me but I’m glad with this video too mr,John💯🙏🏽💪🏽

Bodybuilding is like the fire triangle. You can’t ignite without one or the other. You have to have the complete circle. It’s only taken me 18 years to understand that.

I’ve been lifting three years. I’m 6 ft tall 200 - 205 pounds and have a belly, I feel like my happy weight is 190 195. I bench 225 squat and deadlift 315. I feel I’m at like 20 percent body fat. I know it won’t be hard to drop the weight if I try, but I’m wondering if I should wait past Christmas

I thought the mini-cut was knows for its agressive deficits around 30%, does a 15% deficit get me a 4% bf drop in 6 weeks? Seems a tad optimistic imo.
Would you rather minicut longer or more agressive?

Don't take this as a criticism because I think this video was definitely very informative, I just wish there were more fitness influencers who struggled to lose weight rather than struggled to gain it. Like, I can't relate at all to your story about force-feeding yourself to get up to 260. I didn't have to stuff myself to get up to 280, and it took years of pretty consistent dieting to get back down to 20% BF. I really struggle to move the needle lower than that, even with avoiding calorically dense foods and doing lots of hard cardio. I just can't seem to get my calories low enough for long enough before my energy levels fall off during my workouts and ghrelin punches me in the face. Would be nice to hear more tangible advice from someone who had successfully gone from morbidly obese to 10-15% BF and maintained it. Lot of people have gotten to where I am, but that last bit seems to be super difficult. Some day I'll finally figure out the magic right amount of food to keep my workouts going strong and actually lose this stubborn last 10 pounds of fat.

totally understand...in my own way I feel you, I mean this with sincerity when I go from 6% down to 4% when competing, it is brutal. I am sure that is how many feel just trying to get to 10% and it's not fun, it's downright brutal

    • @greghill158
      @greghill158 3 роки тому

@@mountaindog1 Totally fair. I have to imagine that's insanely difficult even for enhanced athletes with naturally fast metabolisms. Honestly, I don't really get the sport. You all look like 100x better at 8% than you do at 4% IMO.
