John has single-handedly forced me to stop listening to just about everyone else in the fitness world. In a world where everything is click-baited nonsense about, "STOP doing this, and do THIS instead," every time you turn around, someone is hell-bent on telling you anything you're doing wrong, just to appear as the new fitness messiah. We are fortunate to have this man's soft, non-judgmental, and powerful approach to advising the thousands of lifters out there who want to get better. Every tip is an excellent suggestion that hinges solely on someone who lived this and paid detailed attention along the way. This is where I come for information. RIP, my friend, and thank you for sharing all of this with us.
1: 90/10 Rule, Eat 90% less processed foods (Oats, Salmon, Chicken, nutrient dense foods) and 10% anything you really want or the perfect balance that makes you consistent 2: Rotating foods, kiwis to blueberries, oats to rice, chicken to lean beef, and ice cream to cookies (yes even fun foods) 3: Use your nutrition to fuel and recover from training, split out your meals through the day or one big meal if it works better for you and also a good rule of thumb is a good meal after your workouts. BONUS TIP: Don't get obsessed with the scale it takes time and it fluctuates
The BONUS TIP is really true! Can get too obsessive about it. Take pictures and feel your body with your own hands. Are you getting stronger but still not adding fat on your stomach? Then keep going my man!
It's darn hard to find a fitness UA-camr with such a nice public. So many positive comments, no prejudice, no trolling, no hate.. Just camaraderie, as ideally it should be.
I used to get pissed off at that scale. I'd watch my diet, lift four times a week, and I swear that scale would look back at me and laugh it's ass off. Then I realized what MD said towards the end, losing fat and gaining muscle doesn't move the scale, however, it does alter body composition. When your clothes start falling off, but the scale doesn't change, your efforts are paying off.
Cardiovascular health... I noticed when I introduced running 2 miles a day, my body fat went down tremendously (not a fast pace- 6.5mph) but just an additional 20 mins in sacrifice of a few workouts, really made a night and day difference per day
You were near the output of your caloric intake. That running allowed you to burn your fat cause you were outputting over your caloric intake. That or you were exercising into a 'keto state' where you burn off your carbs store which allows you to burn fat. I've done this many times with using running as the exercise to burn fat. Don't hear people talk about this much but it's a proven thing that happens or can happen.
1) calorie deficit. 2) sufficient protein 3) lift hard. Tips: Eat satiating food to prevent hunger and stick to plan on cals in side of equation. Move more to burn more on the cals out side of equation. All you need to know. Pretty much any diet that isnt moronic and allows those 3 to be true is fine and you will get lean. How much time and ink has been spilled to say these things? That said, good video as usual.
I started watching his videos at the beginning of the pandemic and still do currently.. even watching the same ones repeatedly and I will say that this man and his depth of knowledge is a jewel that will surely be missed... I'll see you on the other side big dog! 🙏

You have to appreciate the honesty here and the inside stories that John tells. I can remember the first time I saw a bodybuilder hit a pose and pass out on stage. At first I thought that he flexed so hard all the blood went to his muscles and left nothing for his brain. But as John just told us, they used diuretics back then and their diets were so narrow and restricted, the poor guy was probably dehydrated and had his electrolytes way out of balance. And after this video, I now know that getting ripped and lean is only half the journey. You can have just as many problems coming out of that contest conditioning as you return to normal eating. What an eye opener.
I had seen his videos on other occasions but had not paid the attention he deserved. In my opinion, he was a very humble man who explained with dedication and certainty everything he said. Today I started to watch his videos with more attention and I realized that he had passed away from the comment of a user, I feel sad and impressed that a man apparently so healthy, young, and strong has left overnight. RIP big man, thanks for all you have done.

I don’t use the terms “cheat day” or “cheat meal” because I feel that “cheating” implies dishonesty. When I do occasionally stray, I simply “indulge” myself a bit because I’ve earned it. The ability to adhere to a fairly strict eating regimen is great for both the health benefits, and for the fact that the discipline involved enhances one’s self esteem and self respect. The terminology may just be semantics, but for me the difference is important. Cheers and I very much enjoy your great tutorials MDog!

I love your diet posts as much as your lifting ones. Wish you could do more 😊 It's great to see so many coaches advocating more flexible options even in prep to avoid possible binging & disordered eating after a show. I never feel guilty having cereal post leg day now since 90% of my food is unprocessed.. If you have a "Farm to Fork" mentality for most of your meals it really takes the guilt out when you want to enjoy.

I love the 90/10 rule. I tell anyone who asks me about dieting to drop cheat days and just throw in 2-4 cheat meals over the week. Doing this prevents those cheat days where you can literally undo an entire weeks progress in 8 hrs. Also John Meadows recommending a bowl of cereal after training? Outstanding video. Knowledge and authentic. RIP John
Thanks for the wisdom brother! BTW, your son is amazing with his yoyo tricks. Wow!
You don't have to tell me twice! :)
great point on food being a way to bond with friends and family wenever I want to reconnect with friends or family we go for a meal
All the respect for honesty! God bless you! 🙏🏻
Great tips for dieting and talking about it as nutrition/culture and not just fuel was great - but mind blown on the yo-yo trick. I'm not even sure what I saw! Keep at it!
As always, puttin’ out the best content on planet earth.
Thank you for putting this stuff out there for free!
For something to be sustainable, it has to be simple
Topman John meadows .. very knowledgeable and so helpful.. all the way from the Uk 🇬🇧
Thx John! I’d add stay consistent even if you’re going through a transition time do something even if it’s much less than you did before.
Absolutely!
Plain and simple but it means alot coming from you as I needed this!!
John you were so legendary! ❤️thanks for all the amazing vids
I absolutely love this video. I have a friend who has developed an eating order due to being so restrictive on her diet. Thank you for putting this information out and explaining why it’s so important to have balance in your life ❤️
Lol! The regret when he said why did I eat just tuna all those years was hilarious. Love the content it's true and honest advise you can trust.
These videos cheer me up. Since developing some weird a** neck spasms I haven't trained at all and these are keeping me sane ...
Thanks John, I needed this for the summer
Your boy is phenomenal....huge fan in Australia
Great video, inspirational, you got me hooked on Tuna from your lunch prep video and I still love it haha
very nice work here John!!! I remember lee Haney eating cake with his son during a birthday party and this was 10 weeks out or so from the Olympia….
