Couldn't care less about transforming figures, but as a figure, this looks awesome. And for $80 it looks really good, Mafex, SHF all cost up at that level and mostly don't have that much paint, or the equivalent level of articulation!
I personally prefer non-transforming Transformers because I’ll never end up taking it out of bot mode especially when it comes to the higher end figures. If it’s a cheaper studio or deluxe figure then I’d want it to transform so I can play with it like a desk toy.
as a kid, I used to find non-transforming Transformer figures silly, but I appreciate them now as an adult. That being said, I would really love a non transforming Bumblebee based on his first form('77 Camaro) in Transformers(2007), I've always loved that look of him, maybe as a Yolopark model kit, or a Threezero figure .
I love both transforming and non-transforming figures. They serve different purposes and both have their place. The High Moon games are what properly made me love Transformers, so stylized/updated versions of the G1 designs tend to be my favorite Transformer aesthetic, and I think Threezero is nailing it. Glad to see you loved this figure, it’s definitely in my Top 5 for the year for sure (I don’t know if it beats the Heat Boys Mecha Leonardo for the #1 spot though 😅). Great review as always, thanks!
Question(s) of The Day Answer(s)- 1. Totally cool with non-transforming Transformers if they are done well and appear to be a premium well thought out figure when it comes to articulation, design, and deco. Die-Cast is always a bonus and cool throwback. 2. I agree with your take on stylization. Transformers have been around for almost 40 years and there are lots of different designs and eras from different media that have their fans. There's always room for more well done takes. I hope you review the upcoming Starscream from this line. It's stylized and has some interesting features. It'll be the first MDLX I've purchased. I might have to go back and grab Nemesis Prime and this Megatron. I've collected a lot of Transformers over the years. I was always hesitant to transform the expensive Masterpiece figures for fear of breaking them. I'm not really into the cheaper stuff as the deco and parts sometimes come across as cheap. I had some R.E.D. stuff but sold it. This line seems to hit that sweet spot I'm looking for. Starscream can't come soon enough. Great Review! Contender for Top 10?
I collect both, MP Scale Transformers, and these MDLX figures. Love posing the MDLX figures. You can get way more dynamic poses than the MP Scale transformers.
$80 is expensive, but for the quality - details, paint, and everything, you are getting what you are paying for. This is also officially licensed figures. Where a Hasbro Boba Fett toy is $40 or Mafex and imports are $50 or more for similar size; they are comparable. I prefer toys that can transform, but it is not a deal breaker especially for beautiful figures like ThreeZero stuff. They are Hot Toy level, but cheaper. I am for good looking toys. They don’t need to be movie or TV accurate. So stylized these beauties! I love the gun handle boot design and the shoulder canon from the pistol.
as a transformers fan I don't mind having just the robot mode as long as it stays true or close enough to the original design. that even though in robot mode you can still see parts from their alt mode which completes not only the aesthetics but also the character.
I like transformers that don’t transform but I appreciate them from a distance, when it comes time to buy I don’t know why the thing has to be able transform Keep up the great work
I was curious what you think about the recent Threezero DLX Iron Man movie figures? Looking at reviews they seem to be pretty good. They have die cast and can light up and they include both repulsor hands with effects and painted repulsor hands as well as a stand. Given the drawbacks to the S.H. Figuarts Iron Man figures with the articulation, they look pretty comparable. They are closer to 7 inch scale though, but the bigger size, die cast, light up, and accessories for the same price as the Figuarts seems like a better bang for your buck. I've been eyeing the mark 7, that one seems to have some of the better accessories and articulation, and these Transformers being really good got me interested.
for the first question. i dont mind at all for a non transforming transformer. specially if they are model kits. i can add on to kitbash and or customize a gundam. for question 2. i love the more branch out styles. i love the big fire bird style for Arcee and Flames Toys Windblade. Flame Toys Windblade is a model kit and i use the body of the kit to turn her into a gundam. not everything has to be blocky and G1 style. im getting tired of just cars turning into blocky robots. but that's my opinion.
To answer the question... between Generations and Masterpiece, I have plenty of options for Transformers that transform. Some are great, some aren't. But this looks great, it's a nice representation of Megatron... and I like what I see; I am hesitant to buy it but that has nothing to do with quality or not transforming. Just not sure I want to dive into the Threezero rabbit hole for space and budgetary reasons... if I get him, I'll need Optimus. But he looks awesome and I am still quite tempted. I don't need it to transform.
I can appreciate any good action figure, but I am not buying a Transformer for my personal collection that doesn't transform. The design skill to make a visually accurate (mostly) figure in both modes is the true beauty of Transformers
As long as companies do something new with the character, I’m not opposed to non-transforming action figures of transformers characters. Honestly, Hasbro should’ve done something like this for that red line of theirs instead of just playing it safe. Although, let’s be honest, Hasbro probably would’ve screwed the pooch on quality like they did with those figures.
Hasbro would have cut corners. So, I’m glad ThreeZero is doing this instead. At this point, Hasbro would charge over $100 for something similar. Leave it to ThreeZero to do affordable quality stuff.
AotD1: I’m kind of going back and forth on this. Transforming is part of the line’s DNA. But if I’m completely honest, modern higher end TFs have fantastic looking robot modes but also horribly complex, fiddly and just not fun transformations. So they mostly stay in robot mode… And wouldn’t it be better to have just a highly articulated figure with no alt mode instead? AotD2: I’m good with stylised interpretations of past designs. I find it amusing that even official designers have been going this route since the Bumblebee movie, going back to G1 for the Decepticons in particular. This Three Zero Megatron could actually fit in the Beeverse without any issue.
I didn’t buy when I first saw it and sold out. Everywhere else was selling for way over price.100$+. Just bought it for 68$ with tax and shipping, 90$. Amazing yamaguchi toys goes for 100$ and not even die cast. Marvels die cast set starts around 100$.
I don't mind one bit that my Transformers don't transform. I want the coolest, best looking, poseable figure I can get. As a kid I loved transforming them. Now? No thanks. I bought a few Master Piece figures that are amazing but I never have and never will transform them out of Robot mode. I can't wait to get Starscream. I hope they make many more characters. Would love Prowl.
i do not care if a transformer transforms. When Action Masters came out i was STOKED to get a figure that looked like the cartoon, and not a weird mess (looking at you, Ironhide and Ratchet!)
Have the flametoys kurokarakuri optimus and megatron and also the threezero Primal on pre-order! So a No for me it has nothing to do if it can transform at all if the transformer himself looks and articulates like his movie/animated counterpart do!
I wish you did a review of a Beasts of the Mesozoic action figure. If you like a nice paintjob on a figure then you wouldn't be disappointed by something like the fan's choice medusaceratops, or albertaceratops, etc. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts about them, as they are the best dinosaur action figures ever: scientifically accurate, articulated, amazing sculpts.
@@AnthonysCustoms You've definitely reviewed things that he worked on in the past as he used to work at MacFarlane and Neca. I think he sculpted the panther/night cougar xenomorphs for example. I know you don't do interviews normally but that could be interesting.
@@AnthonysCustoms I’m glad to see the review finally happened. I just watched your Lythronax review. I don’t know where to begin. You really put that figure down and most of it was justified and I agree with. Without knowing the dinosaur action figure landscape this might look like trash to you, but it is so above and beyond anything else that it’s not even funny. These are actually scientifically accurate, not just made up monsters. As an adult dino fan I can tell you that these Beasts of the Mesozoic figures are what I’ve been waiting for my whole life. Every other articulated dinosaur figure is just trash compared to these. These are actually scientifically accurate. Jurassic Park toys are grossly inaccurate and are just movie monsters loosely based on dinosaurs. Their proportions are awful and the articulation is garbage. Not to mention there’s barely any paint on JP toys; usually nothing beyond the waist, and what is there is just pixelated printed on doodoo. I wish you had gotten something from the ceratopsian (triceratops and its relatives) line. Mattel’s top of the line Hammond Collection Triceratops that is aimed at adult collectors feels and looks like a bathtub toy compared to BoTM figures. I’d be happy to send you one of my BoTM figures if you want to get a better feel for how good they can actually be. The sweetspot for these is $50 mark ceratopsian figures.
I prefer the non-transforming versions myself. I'd rather an action figure of the character with all the articulation than being able to change. They're in their non-transforming state in the movies and shows anyway for the character building. The vehicle part is just a mode of transportation
I am perfectly fine with non-transforming Transformers, and as far as the stylization thing goes, I am also perfectly fine with it, but the execution is sometimes not good.
I can appreciate them but non Transforming transfomers arent for me. Especially if theres clear design bits that are meant to be part of the different form. Im glad that people can enjoy them but it feels like Im missing out on something. Realizing the perfect cool designs though is nice for people that want that. transformation is of no interest for me-I am Beast Wars fan, have most of predacons and autobots that were released not so long ago(+some that were released as the time the cartoon was aired on tv)-and they will stay in their robot modes as long as they are mine.

Surprised at such a high accessory score. He could really use a melee weapon and alternate expression.

no issue with non-transforming Transformer as long as it has great articulation.

Ok if the aesthetic is cool & design is great. Of course the ability to transform & changing between alt mode & figure is a plus

The fact that a chunky robot has better articulation than most Spider-Man figures is embarrassing
I managed to nab the vintage versions of Optimus and Megatron, i don't care abotu not transforming, but as they are, they are exceptional figures.

Unless its an animal, who needs a transforming transformer. I’d rather the main event character aspect which is the robot
